Band To Check Out - Dope Smoker

Bio

Dope Smoker are a 3 piece Rock group from South West Wales where everyone smokes dope & surfs.

"Riff-tastic Welsh-surfer-stoner doom; it's surely a new sub-genre!"

The Lowdown

I've been a fan of the Welsh Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal scene for a number of years now. Wales have provided the world with great bands such as: Acrimony, Sigiriya, Taint, H A R K, Zonderhoof, Hogslayer, Prosperina and Thorun to name but a few.

Now there is another great band to check out from Wales. A band by the name of Dope Smoker. Obviously named after the classic Stoner Metal album itself though Dope Smoker bring a fresh perspective on the Sludge/Stoner Metal sound. A sound that includes traces of Surf Rock, Sludge, Doom, Stoner Rock and lashes of Fuzz.

These guys are very prolific. 4 albums released since November 2014. And each one a blast from start to finish. The thing that stands out for me with Dope Smoker is how each album progresses from the last one. Their latest album Vol 4 is perhaps their best album yet as it sees Dope Smoker finally coming into their own identity and creating a great sound of their own.

They're beginning to make a name for themselves within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal community and have built up a small loyal fanbase. If you're a fan of Sleep, Kyuss, Nirvana, Uncle Acid and the mighty Black Sabbath then get with the program and check out Dope Smoker now. The vocals have a slight Ozzy/Uncle Acid vibe but it works with the crazy fuzzed up atmosphere they've created on all of their albums.

Dope Smoker is a DIY band in every sense of the word. The production varies from each album but that shouldn't stop you enjoying the fucking amazing riffs the band have created here. Dope Smoker have the potential to be a true “cult” band within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal community.

I have a feeling it won't be long until Dope Smoker will be releasing Vol 5, 6 and 7 on a respectable indie label in the near future.

You can check all of their albums on BandCamp now. Some you have to pay for and some you can download for free. Help them out though as these guys deserve it.
