Review

UK Sludge/Stoner/Desert Mob - Widows - release their second album - Oh Deer God - after releasing a few EP's over the years. The album is built upon sludge/stoner metal sounds with a more violent desert rock vibe. The album also has moments of heavy metal and thrash that give Widows extra bite in the volume department.

Opening track - Oh Deer God - has a certain NOLA sound set against the volatile Desert Rock riffs. The vocals take some time getting used to but not too long for you not to enjoy the excellent music on show. The lyrics aren't the most serious you'll ever hear but that has never been Widows style. The band are primarily a band who build their sound on pure aggression though spliced with heavy sludge, stoner and desert rock sounds.

The Desert Rock element of Widows music makes them one of the more interesting bands to come out from the UK Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. The band has been playing their trade since 2008 and they have built a wealth of experience in how to write songs packed full of anger and attitude to match.

Tracks such as Caffeine and Hatred, Heresy and Venom, Blue Tina and Baron Greenback Blues - contain a manic punk energy at times though the band still play their heavy sludge/stoner/desert rock hybrid sound with delicious and twisted results. If you're a fan of Clutch, Kyuss and Down then Widows will appeal to you as can hear elements of those three legendary bands in Widow's music.

My only complaint is that the album feels too short. As it's all over within thirty minutes. I expected a couple of more songs as the album suddenly ends. Apart from that minor complaint, Oh Deer God is an album that will find fans across the Sludge, Stoner and Desert Rock community. As there is something for everyone to enjoy.

If songs such as Ride To The Realm Of Coitus, Baron Greenback Blues and Germanium Buzz doesn't get you in the mood then I don't know what will. Expect to hear more of Widows in the months to come. As Widows have released a superb album that will have you coming back for more punishment again and again.
