Review

Endling is the crushing new album from Doom/Drone collective ONHOU and it’s a heavy slab of crushing Doom Metal that’s pitch black and full of different exciting sounds. The album is bleak from the start with the down-tuned grooves and distorted vocals allow this album to fully consume your soul. The music is wild and vivid from the start with elements of Post-Metal, Doom, Sludge and Drone Metal allowing ONHOU to add a gloomy Psychedelic vibe to the whole flow of the album.

Opening song – DIRE – flirts between Post-Metal and Blackened Doom riffs with a heavy apocalyptic theme running throughout the song. The song has a lot a ground of cover with 17 minutes of pure punishing Doom/Drone grooves being played for both your pain and pleasure. The song is quite progressive but it’s the bleak atmosphere that allows ONHOU to have a dangerous and gloomy sound of their own. The band feel inspired by Neurosis, THOU and Wolves In The Throne Room. ONHOU never shy away from playing their music that’s packed full of manic and violent twisted energy.

Second song – March Retreat – opens with a standard Doom/Sludge Metal sound that soon adds a slightly disturbing Psychedelic vibe in the background and the vocals just command your attention. The sludgy progressive parts are the most interesting part of the song with the gloomy atmospherics allowing ONHOU to create a creepy and superbly entertaining blend of Extreme Metal.

Third song – Silence – offers one final round of Sludge/Doom/Drone Metal madness for ONHOU to impress you with. The eerie Psychedelic tones do their job superbly well again with the distorted vocals and sinister Doom riffs leave you wanting more. This is my favourite song on the album as it’s played at a deliberate slow pace but it has a more menacing tone and presence that sent chills down my spine.

Endling is an unflinching and unapologetic display of Sludge/Doom Metal that ranks as one of the heaviest and bleakest albums of the year. ONHOU take no prisoners with this album and that’s what makes this album such an AWESOME EXPERIENCE to listen to on these dark winter nights slowly coming in.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Greetings All,

Earlier this month, one of my absolute favourite bands Domkraft released an absolutely killer new EP entitled Slow Fidelity. This record comes hot on the heels of last years amazing Flood album. If you haven’t yet, do yourself a favour and check out that monster of a record. Slow Fidelity is a 3(4) song EP that shows the trio from Sweden mixing their trademark hypnotic riff and repeat sound with guest vocalists and some solid experimentation. The collaborative effort with Lea of Besvarjelsen, Marty of Slomatics and the enigmatic Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and QOTSA and more along with his own brilliant solo work, is a monster track filled with doom laden imagery and psych heavy explorations. The record seems to find the band leading you a dark, desolate journey from somewhere to who knows where. It lends itself to being a soundtrack to an apocalypse, and it sounds really damn good.

The record opens with the slow build of Through the Ashes that then explodes into the powerful riffage and some wiry angular sounds across nearly 10 minutes of bleak heaviness that laments “You let the guiding lights blind you”. The band then kicks in right away with the rock heavy and expansive sound of Mud Collider, a driving track shows the trio really flexing their muscle. The record then gives way to the centrepiece of the record. A bass heavy opening unleashes Where We Part Ways to a weary world. The band veers in a multitude of directions while allowing the aforementioned guest vocalists to weave dark parables to the listeners. This is a truly amazing song and a testament to the artistry of all involved. The closer revisits the same track, Where We Part Ways (Instrumental) revisits the song with an extra couple of seconds of music. It is really interesting to hear the band showing the foundation of the song and allowing the listener to drift under the hypnotic sound to either throw in your own words or just allow you to be consumed and drift away into the hypnotic hereafter.

Domkraft is honestly one of my favourite bands around today. Their artistry and immersive sound is nearly unmatched. If you haven’t. Check out both of the bands prior albums and keep your eyes peeled for a live record coming soon. In the interim, check this monster out. You will not be disappointed. Dig Heavy on this and check it out!

Them Dirty Shrikes unveil New Song NOVEMBER

(Photographer - Jean-Michael Kelsey)
Doomy alternative rock band Them Dirty Shrikes release their new single November today. Formed in Pretoria, South Africa in 2016 the band has quickly gained a standing in the local live scene having performed at the country’s top festivals like Oppikoppi, Mistry Waters Music Festival and the Durban International Blues Festival. Apart from the festivals, they have shared the stage with well-known South-African acts such as Hellcats, The Black Cat Bones, Shadowclub, Dan Patlansky and Ruff Majik.
The track is one of two new singles the band will be releasing over the next couple of months and the first new material since their single Trip & Fall which they released in March this year.  February 2018 saw the release of their debut ep Heads or Tails which was very well received by fans and media.

November is the result of a dark time in vocalist Soné Briel’s life as she explains, “This is one of the most personal songs we’ve released to date. When writing this song, I decided to be very frank about what it’s about - drinking like a fish just to cope. It touches on how destructive coping mechanisms are often a cry for help.” She adds, “There’s a way to deal with the hand you’ve been dealt with, - but losing yourself along the way is not it. It’s okay to feel. It’s okay to show emotion. There’s no need to put on a brave face just because you’re human.”

RYTE Announce New Album Details and Exclusive Song Premiere Of SHAKING PYRAMID

Release date: January 17th 2020. Label: Heavy Psych Sounds. Format: CD/DD/Vinyl

RYTE – S/T – Tracklisting

Raging Mammoth
Shaking Pyramid
Monolith
Invaders

The Lowdown

Ryte’s debut album is basically the result of an intense one-and-a-half-year writing process (late 2016 - early 2018), which was definitely fueled by a very creative and communal spirit within the band. The album consists of four long tracks which were constructed and developed carefully over time. The flow came totally natural as every member participated equally and contributed their very own personal abilities. The album definitely pushes the boundaries of Psych rock as it is influenced by countless styles of music including Doom, Prog Rock, Jazz and even World Music.

The sound is dominated by down-tuned, sometimes doomy, sometimes epic twin guitars, dynamic and jazzy drums, distorted, playful basslines and spacey Theremin landscapes. Even though vocals are rare they do exist and are done either by Lukas or Arik, while the lyrics refer to freaked-out sci-fi stuff. Production-wise Hannes himself took over the project and recorded the LP at his own rehearsal space. Michael Piller did the mixing and none other than the underground producer-legend Tim Green mastered the album at Louder Studios in California. Convince yourself and give it a listen! Out in January 2020 on Heavy Psych Sounds!

To get you into the mood for the awesome upcoming new album. You can listen to this exclusive song premiere of SHAKING PYRAMID

The band have stated the following about the song - "With "Shaking Pyramid“, being the longest composition on the album, we tried to catch a certain doomy atmosphere of the present, interdimensionally connected to the past and future. With almost no lyrics the track tells the story of ancient structures, evoked by alien craftsmanship."

Review

High Winds Preacher is the new album from French Stoner Rockers – Denizen – and it’s a gloriously heavy affair which doesn’t take itself too seriously with the different strands of Stoner Rock the band employ throughout the album. Denizen take the standard Kyuss and Fu Manchu style of Stoner grooves and put their own creative spin on things.

Denizen have been going as a band for over quite a while now and they’ve released a wide range different releases over the years that all play to their creative strengths and High Winds Preacher is no different. The band add a clever style of distorted Fuzz Rock on this album with the opening songs Shadow Dancer and Among The Trees showing two different sides to the band. Shadow Dancer has a more playful energy and intense blend of Stoner/Fuzz Rock whilst Among The Trees feels more restrained but with a lot more going on in the background.

The vocals are quite different on this album as they feel more experimental and you should expect to hear different styles of vocals on this album. Though it won’t spoil your overall enjoyment album. Far from it. As it makes the album to have a unique personality of its own.

The album becomes more focused when the third and fourth songs of the album appear with Ears Wide Opened and Chasing The Guru sees Denizen playing a classic style of Desert/Fuzz/Stoner Rock with Psychedelic vibes ruling the roost. The album still allows Denizen to experiment with their sound for a wilder style of music that we haven’t heard from the band before.

Other songs to check out are: The Beast, Mandrake Is Everywhere, White Flamingo and Tomahawk – being the songs with the heaviest and exciting riffs on the album. Tomahawk is perhaps the standout song with the band having more time to fully explore and create more vivid sounding Stoner riffs.

High Winds Preacher does sound and feel like a concept album of sorts with a loose story being told throughout the album. It may take a few listens for the overall themes of the album to fully shine through but as a Stoner Rock album, Denizen have released another wild and highly adventurous slice of Stoner Rock/Metal that will no doubt impress their established fanbase and maybe gain some new fans along the way.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Sweetspot is the new single from Psychedelic Stoner Rockers – Stonus – and it’s a heavy blast of old-school Psychedelic Desert/Stoner Rock with flashes of Alternative Rock and Doom based grooves allowing the band to have a heavier sound than you would expect.

The band are releasing their new album later this year but this song won’t be on this album. However, it’s a good indication on what to expect from the new album. Sweetspot does have an a raw sounding appeal to it but it’s heavy from the start and allows the band to play a more powerful style of Psychedelic Stoner Rock/Metal.

The band have stated the following about the song - “The new single "Sweetspot" is a 5:44 minute fully analogue track from the Cypriot Heavy rockers Stonus, recorded mixed and mastered at WRECK It SOUND Studios in Corinth, Greece under the supervision of the one and only George Leodis!🤘

Its a hot and teasing new single filled with raw energy and dirty riffs perfectly accompanied by the superb art of Renay Roussou 👌. "Sweetspot" is a representation of young fearless love, experimentation and anger...”

My advice is to get with the program and check out this cool song now. You won’t be sorry.

Review

Hymns Of The Damned is the new album Swedish Fuzz/Doom/Stoner Rockers and it sees the band continue their Heavy Rock/Metal journey inspired by the classic 70s Hard Rock sound. The album is quite a confident affair with the band playing addictive grooves that feel influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath and Uncle Acid but with a more addictive Fuzz/Stoner Rock sound.

Opening song – Shadow In The Night – dives head on into the Doom Metal sound with heavy grooves aligning themselves to a more threatening Stoner/Fuzz based approach. The vocals are loud, brash and full-on from the start but the music is where the magic happens with this highly talented Power-Trio proving they can play some epic riffs of their own. The band do play some finely tuned psychedelic guitar solos along the way which is quite refreshing to hear.

Second song – Morbid Lust – as you can tell from the song title carries on with the almost Occult/Doom Metal approach with a heavy bass riff opening the song before the heavy gloomy guitars take centre-stage and drive the action to the very end. The vocals are definitely inspired by 70s Classic Doom Rock/Metal with the lyrics having quite an Occult feel to them. The music can be too theatrical and classed too “Retro” at times but there is an addictive charm to it all.

Third song – Thrill Seeker – has a more “Garage Rock” feel to it with the vintage production that is contained on the song. This isn’t as polished as the opening two songs but is the most intriguing. As the band feel truly alive on this song despite the raw sound and manic energy of it all. This feels like Hazemaze have stripped everything back for a true sounding 70s Doom/Stoner Rock offering and it ends up being perhaps the best song on the entire album.

Hazemaze follow the same path for the rest of the album with the band further exploring their strangely wonderful Doom/Fuzz/Stoner Metal hybrid sound with a few dangerous Psychedelic twists and turns along the way. Songs such as Lobotomy, Solicitor Of Evil and Reverend Death sees Hazemaze selling their creative souls to SATAN himself with some epic riffs being played just for the sheer FUN of it all.

The production is handled superbly well. As it sees the band play a fine balance between 70s Doom Metal and even modern sounding Fuzz/Stoner Metal atmospherics.

If you’re looking for old-school Doom Metal thrills and spills but with a more modern approach then you should give Hymns Of The Damned a spin. As it’s quite an exciting and action-packed listen that even LUCIFER himself would approve of.

Review

Hoodoo Lightning is the 7th album from Swedish Blues/Stoner Rock legends KAMCHATKA and it’s good to see the guys back after a small break back in 2017. This album sees the band re-invent their trademark Blues/Stoner Rock sound with a more grittier edge with the music being more hard-edged compared to their previous albums.

This is still KAMCHATKA but it feels they’ve rediscovered their passion for all things HARD ROCK. As this is perhaps the heaviest the album has done in years. The songs are more Psychedelic than I originally expected but their Blues Rock influence remains a constant theme woven into the fabric of the entire album. Hoodoo Lightning is a CLASSIC ROCK ALBUM in every sense of the word with KAMCHATKA leaving no doubt they’re one of the best Blues/Stoner Rock bands currently out there.

The songs allow KAMCHATKA to show fans that they’re hungrier as ever for delivering fast-paced grooves with a twinge of HEAVY METAL appearing here and there. The opening two-part song – Black Science – is the perfect way to open the album. As it shows the band’s new sound whilst still retaining the essence that made the band so well known in the first place.

Second song - Blues Science Pt 2 Hoodoo Lightning – is perhaps the strongest part of the two-part song as KAMCHATKA start to become more comfortable with their musical surroundings and the superb vocals just add an extra layer of class to the overall feel of the album. The music drifts into different styles of music such as Classic Rock, Stoner Rock, Blues Rock and Psych Rock and still sounds remarkably fresh and original.

The album moves along at a cracking pace with songs such as Fool, Rainbow Bridge and Supersonic Universe with many hard-rocking moments to worship and admire. Rainbow Bridge and Supersonic Universe are two of the best songs on the album with KAMCHATKA playing some of the best grooves on the album especially when the Stoner Rock riffs go into overdrive.

The second half of the album sees KAMTCHATKA continue with their grittier style of Psych/Blues/Stoner Rock with a few surprises along the way. The instrumental work from all 3 members is good as ever with the tight bond between Thomas, Tobias and Per being the main strength of the whole album.

Standout songs on the second half of the album are: Monster, Let It Roll and A Drifter’s Tale.

Overall, Hoodoo Lightning is the album that KAMCHATKA needed to release and it shows the band have a lot more groovy stories to tell and I’m grateful that there are bands such as KAMCHATKA still around to show the world how to release a fantastic sounding Blues/Stoner Rock album.

If you’re new to the world of KAMCHATKA then this is the perfect album to introduce yourselves to this amazing band. Long-time fans will no doubt embrace this album with open arms and enjoy what is perhaps their best album to date.

Review

Ataraxy is the new album from Guernsey Psychedelic Post-Rock/Stoner Rock band BRUNT and it’s their first new record in 3 years. The band have spent that time wisely creating a more cinematic style of music with the music being more driven by Post-Rock sounds than ever before. This makes Ataraxy a more interesting prospect with the different styles of music on offer.

BRUNT still manage to create LOUD and HEAVY Stoner Rock/Metal grooves throughout the album and it’s quite creative in places and the album becomes a more rewarding experience every time you listen to it. Though it will take a few listens to fully understand it all. The album is purely instrumental but that doesn’t stop BRUNT telling an intriguing story that packed with depth and emotion from start to finish.

Opening song – The Grauballe Man – feels influenced by ISIS/Russian Circles style of Post-Rock that sets up the scene beautifully well and the ambient sounds further draws you into BRUNT’s dark world. The song is quite gloomy and claustrophobic in places but it fully comes alive when the Stoner Rock or Post-Stoner vibes appear and things become HEAVY and VOLATILE rather quickly. Though it’s the opening Post-Rock moments that impressed me the most.

Second song – Light Of The Mire – is another 9 minute epic where BRUNT deliver another superb piece of Progressive Post-Stoner grooves with elements of Sludge Rock that begin to show a more creative side to the band that we haven’t heard before. The song is quite complex in places but BRUNT deserve credit for trying something different for the sound they’re initially made their name with. This album feels like BRUNT are starting to come of age and wanting to make a real name for themselves and the opening two songs shows that the band have accomplished that mission.

Third song – Ataraxy – is the shortest song on the album but perhaps the most interesting. As the band have less time to play with here but still manage to weave a stunning blend of Psych Rock. Stoner Rock and Space Rock that manages to feel fresh and original.

The final song – Black Smoke – sees BRUNT return with another epic 9 minute song that follows the same setup as the opening two songs but allowing BRUNT to try different things as well. This is my favourite song on the album as it feels more emotional and more focused as well. The Progressive parts hold everything together for BRUNT to play some of the heaviest grooves on the entire album.

Ataraxy is a superbly produced album and one that shows why this is BRUNT’s best album to date. This is perhaps one of the best Instrumental Rock albums you’ll hear this year. No question...
