Review

All Shadows Stretched is the second full length album from Experimental Psychedelic Rockers Folwark who draw the listener into a complex style of Psych, Drone, Doom and Stoner rhythms that has a certain Space Rock flavour appearing. The use of Prog Rock imagery only adds a mysterious creative aura to Folwark with a haunting mix of synths, electronics and other experimental beats that gives All Shadows Stretched quite an original sound.

With an abstract Stoner Rock structure appearing within the opening track To Plough The Waves, you can hear influences such as EARTH, UFOAMMAUT and even Alice In Chains appearing. Whilst not exactly part of the METAL world, Folwark demonstrate their own style of unique heaviness which is subtle, calm, aggressive, understated and wildly unpredictable which they fully build upon throughout the album.

The vocals from both Francesco and Tommaso have a certain melancholic quality to them with a sludgy attitude appearing within the heavier moments. The added use of Electronics and Synths adds a level of Doomgaze and Sludge Rock heaviness to the record especially within the excellent second track of The Depths. Folwark plays with a measured sense of calm even when the record drifts into Experimental / Drone territory. The absence of the bass guitar is perhaps noticeable in places but one that doesn’t stop the enjoyment of the album with The Depths becoming one of the standout tracks of the album.

Folwark becomes even heavier and daring on the next part of the album with tracks such as Amygdala, Vacuum Dancer and Oval Night with the Space Rock vibes becoming quite dominant. The eerie Psychedelic beats, noises and glitches start lightning up the dark environments that Folwark projects within the longer instrumental movements and soundscapes that reign supreme throughout. The music can be described as a style of Cinematic Post-Rock with the Electronic beats transforming into moments of Shoegaze.

The sense of experimentation that Folwark creates here is quite bold and vivid in equal measure. The sound does bring a scope of Alternative Metal at times with the lyrics adding a sense of Post-Doom and Gloomy surroundings to All Shadows Stretched.

Folwark impresses the most when they decide to focus constantly more on melody and psychedelic sounds which gives a more straightforward style of riff-centric mechanics to fully emerge within the later stages of the record. Though, the band never fell into the trap of “PLAYING IT SAFE” with each individual track sounding wholly different to each other.

The stripped back production values and recording techniques used for the album is superbly handled which allows Folwark to deliver a record that never outstayed its welcome. This a highly adventurous and intelligent record with Folwark playing a continuous stream of intense melodies and progressive sounds that you can’t help but lose yourself in.

Overall, All Shadows Stretched is a welcome addition to the Experimental Psych Rock scene that will surprise you with the many different sounds, genres and creative ideas that are contained within.

An Interview With Doom/Stoner Metallers MIDNIGHT WHISKEY MASSACRE

Doom/Stoner Metallers Midnight Whiskey Massacre debut EP - Satan’s Grin - is a weird concoction of Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Grunge, Post-Punk and Psych Rock. This is a great record that showcases the arrival of a great band especially with the excellent spiky vocals Darren Ironside reminding me of Shane McGowan and Mark E Smith at times.

I wanted to find out more about this cool band and I’m happy to report that Darren Ironside (Guitars/Vocals) kindly agreed to this interview.

Hi Darren. Thanks for doing this interview. How are things with you today?

Hi Steve, no problem, thank you for your time. All good here!

For folks not in the know can you give a brief history of how the band came together and where it is today?

I first started writing the songs that would end up on the debut material, ‘Overwatch and Control’ in 2022, out of the observations of a lot of people’s frustration and anger, of the after effects of covid and the implemented government policies and law changes since then, that worked negatively against the population.

So I guess that first inspired me to write the songs and continue to progress it to where it is today. Me and the bassist, Sam, are looking for a regular drummer and rhythm guitarist to get out playing live shows. Until then work has started to begin on new material.

How do you describe your own sound?

I guess you would say it’s a raw mix of heavy rock, proto-metal and doomy, sludgy, stoner rock, with southern rock vibes and doom metal grooves, delivered with a punk kind of sound or twist.

We're here to discuss your new EP - Satan's Grin. Great EP and quite an unusual sound but in a good way. What can people expect to hear from this EP?

Big, raw and doomy/sludgy metal and heavy rock riffs with a difference, if you love your heavy rock and metal songs with quite a unique sound, I think there is something here for everyone to enjoy as it has a lot of different musical styles and genres incorporated into it, ranging from blues, metal, heavy rock, doom, post punk and stoner rock.

One fan described the song ‘Rocking chair’ as a bit like, if Iggy Pop wrote a metal song!

This is a quite an highly unusual EP with elements of Stoner, Doom, Post-Punk and Southern Rock. Was that your plan to create something different to your previous EPs?

No, not really, it’s just how it came out with the influences of the genres I enjoy listening to, I think.

Where did the name for the band come from and where did the name for the EP came from as well?

I came up with the name some time ago, that I wanted to use if I ever got this project going and some people have said listening to this music makes them feel slightly drunk! So it seems to kind of make sense and fits the style of the music.

What bands and EPs influenced you when recording this EP?

To be honest there wasn’t any particular band or ep that influenced the recording or mindset, in terms of wanting to sound like anyone else. It was recorded straight through mic’d amps with fairly traditional methods and without too much studio trickery and the like, so it was kept quite raw sounding.

The post punk sound on some of the songs on the EP, like Rocking chair and Satan’s grin probably come from the influences and tastes of the raw sounds, of bands that I was into and loved back in the day, like Nirvana, Therapy etc and then later, heavier, more groove based doom and sludge bands, like EyeHateGod, Corrosion of Conformity, The Obsessed.

I was always into stuff with a raw, honest edge and a big sound, so I guess it came from that.

What formats is the EP being released on?

For now it is just available on digital format

You`re releasing the EP by yourself. Is that a hard thing to do in today's musical scene?

Well it’s probably easier now than ever before, for artists for to record and do all or most of the work themselves, but if you don’t have that ability to do so and you want to go into a studio and need to get it done there, obviously that has to be funded and isn’t always easy to do in today’s financial climate.

What is the creative process or setup within the band? Do you write the music together or do certain people within the band do that?

I write the music and songs from home myself so far and then we pretty much go from there.

Who designed the excellent EP cover. Really brings to light what the whole EP is about.

That would be Harry Awongo via Instagram and yes there is kind of a message in there and the songs, with the world's current financial landscape and political climate being what it is, have certainly made these times very interesting for us all to be living in.

What is the current state of your local Rock/Metal scene? Do you perform gigs on a regular basis and do you have a local scene that you are actively involved with?

Locally it’s not that great, there are a few good bands within the genre, but not many venues that you can go to, that play original heavy music in Hertfordshire, unless you go to London or another big city where you can see the more well known bands on tour, or that play our sort of music within this scene.

Will you be performing any gigs to promote this EP locally or further afield?

We certainly hope to, we just need to find a regular drummer and rhythm guitarist who wants to join us on this journey.

Words of wisdom for fans?

We really hope you can enjoy the EP and try and help support all artists by buying their music and merch wherever possible and continuing to support bands and venues, to keep live music and bands alive and kicking. Without you all and all of that, it wouldn’t be possible!

Rock on!

6.Cult Leader 04:23

7.The Icon...The Betrayer 05:38

8.Silence the Raven 05:25

9.Abyssus Daemonium 06:01

Review

Silence The Raven is the second full length album from Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal duo Wet Temple who have slimmed down from a power trio since their 2019 debut self-titled album. What they lack in numbers they make up for in sheer brute force with their punishing style of fast paced style of pure carnage. Inspired by the likes of CONAN, BEHOLD THE MONOLITH, HIGH ON FIRE and other bands of that ilk. There’s perhaps a fantasy influence behind the lyrics for this album with some of the song titles giving a strong indication of what to expect.

The music is mostly down tuned and powered by an AMPLIFIED FUZZ METAL sound which has levels of distorted melody through the harsh vocals that accompany the subtle grooves. There’s echoes of Thrash, Speed Metal and Psychedelic surroundings on the record which becomes more noticeable on the longer tracks held on the album such as Wither, The Icon…The Betrayer and Abyssus Daemonium.

With the band showing a great style of vintage sounding Sludge/Stoner Metal with an almighty SABBATHIAN presence that allows Wet Temple to become primal within the shorter tracks with the excellent batch of opening tracks Rebirth, The Order and Trails Of The Knight to create a mystical world that legendary characters such as CONAN THE BARBARIAN would easily thrive. With a modern day DOOM & GLOOM aesthetic allowing the Progressive Metal themes to provide realistic melodies with a harsh gruff creative attitude that manifests into some top-notch riffage that once again has a certain early era HIGH ON FIRE flair.

However, Silence The Raven works best when Wet Temple just play a no holds barred and simple style of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal where the FUZZ METAL sounds take sole control with the band offering the heaviest and freshest grooves on the record especially on tracks such as Wither, Call Of The World Serpent and Silence The Raven.

Despite the fantastical setting of the album, the lyrics can be quite grounded which allows Silence The Raven to have a thoughtful creative attitude with Wet Temple playing top-notch and equally thrilling HEAVY METAL thunderous grooves throughout.

Wet Temple have released an absolute MONSTER with this superbly entertaining record and it’s one you’ll be headbanging for days to come.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Doom Metal Masters DOMKRAFT reveal new single 'The Bane' & details of enhanced reissue of "Domkraft"

Swedish psychedelic doom masters DOMKRAFT reveal 'The Bane' as an advance single from their reissue of the 2015 self-titled EP "Domkraft", which has been upgraded to an album with two new unreleased tracks. The "Domkraft" release is scheduled for June 27, 2025.

In further news, DOMKRAFT have announced a co-headlining summer tour with label mates HOWLING GIANT in the US. Please see below for album details and all currently confirmed live dates.

DOMKRAFT discuss the reissue: "2025 marks the 10-year anniversary of the very first Domkraft release, our self-issued and seltf-titled EP", singer and bass player Martin Wegeland writes.

"Only 250 copies were printed that have been sold out for many years. The time felt right to do a re-release and combine the four original tracks with two new and unreleased songs to make it an album experience. We've been on the fence about reissuing the EP as there is a certain beauty to something not being widely available anymore.

Yet those songs still make their way into our sets from time to time, so it makes sense for people to be able to get them on physical media. Funny story; the entire original recording was more or less improvised over a weekend. We just had the riffs and a loose idea of how they would fit together, meaning that the different takes on each song could vary from five minutes to fifteen plus. I think the versions that made it are the middle ground ones. To us, it is still a cool release and hard to pigeonhole due to its unhinged nature."

DOMKRAFT 'The Bane' taken from the album "Domkraft"

DOMKRAFT comment on the single: "We originally wrote 'The Bane' for the 'Planet of Doom' movie soundtrack", Martin Wegeland explains. "It was the first time that we composed within a pre-determined framework, which was a stimulating challenge. It worked out surprisingly well compared to how we usually structure our songs. It is also one of the heavier tracks that we have ever done. As it was recorded in between 'Flood and Seeds', it has one leg in each album cycle, which I think is quite audible. Plus, this is the very first time that we've ever sung about dragons."

Tracklist

1. Concrete Waves
2. Horses Horses
3. Invaders
4. Treeman
5. Spiral Noises
6. The Bane

When the self-released and self-titled "Domkraft" EP came out in 2015, it was for many the first sign of life from the Swedes. That the 250 original copies sold out quickly is a testament to the strong appeal of the fuzz-driven, psychedelic riff-doom cosmos that DOMKRAFT created right from the start. And it just kept growing over the course of 10 years, four albums, two EPs, and a live record.

Their musical journey has navigated the galactic psyche and into alternate metaphysical realities in search of escape, respite, and release. Although DOMKRAFT have generally stayed true to the direction of their musical course with every new release, the Nordic trio has also constantly evolved, audibly matured, and sharpened their writing skills. On latest full-length "Sonic Moons" (2023), their trademark towering doom anthems remain, but with an ever so slight shift toward heavy rock through small tweaks and nuances.

DOMKRAFT were conceived when singer and bassist Martin Wegeland, guitarist Martin Widholm, and drummer Anders Dahlgren bonded over a mutual love of bands such as SPACEMEN 3, MONSTER MAGNET, SLEEP, and HAWKWIND. Drawing from the heaviest of their combined influences, they crafted a sound that blends monolithic dirges, mind-bending psychedelia, and hypnotic minimalism, as embodied by DOMKRAFT's massive 2016 first album "The End of Electricity", the crushing 2018 follow-up "Flood" and the acclaimed and massively amplified third and fourth full-lengths "Seeds" (2021) and "Sonic Moons".

Over the course of the last decade, DOMKRAFT have established a reputation as a major live force and performed at prestigious festivals such as the Desertfests (BE and DE), Psycho Las Vegas (US), Blow Up (FI), Sonic Whip (NL), Ripplefest Texas (US), Hostsabbat (NO) and many others.

As a lovely anniversary offering for their dedicated and ever-growing following, DOMKRAFT finally reissue their much sought after debut EP that has been lovingly upgraded to a full-length album.

Review

Dragged into Rot is the second album from Doom/Sludge Metallers Salace who conjure up a sense of warped darkness into their music which has a violent monolithic energy to it throughout the whole record. The vocals are harsh and quite grime inducing at times with a “LESS IS MORE” atmosphere summoning up the heaviest, nastiest and meanest grooves you’ll encounter from the WEEDIAN scene. The record isn’t exactly extreme based but Salace does add certain aspects from the EXTREME underground scene though the music does have its fair share of Psychedelic and Post-Metal imagery.

The opening batch of tracks Madness, Icarus and Lies allows Salace to lay down their destructive path with overcutting Doom and Sludge Metal guitars with a grind appearing for a stripped back performance which can feel over done at times. However, the music is always engaging and quite vindictive when Salace starts performing a more methodical musical style despite some of the rough sounding production values the record contains.

Salace offers an uncompromising and unapologetic style of music where the mood just becomes ever more extreme based though the excellent instrumental passages keeps everything within the confinements of modern day Doom/Sludge Metal. The LO-FI surroundings become ever more engaging and an essential part of Salace’s sound especially on tracks such as Pariah, SIlence,  Brain Crack and Curse.

The vocals have a despairing and uncompromising quality to them which allows Salace to conjure up disturbing themes and atmospheric sounds that have a Progressive vibe to them. The despairing and experimental tone of the album becomes even stronger on the later stages of the record which remains brutally bleak until the dying seconds.

If you dig bands such as NEUROSIS, YOB, HIGH ON FIRE and THOU then Salace should be right up your street. Just be prepared for a darker expedition into the gloomier side of Doom Metal and Sludge Metal.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Thunderball is the new album from the legendary metallers MELVINS and this record features the core 1983 line-up of King Buzzo (Guitar/Vocals) and Mike Dillard on drumming duties. The record features five tracks that showcases some of the most riff-fuelled sound the band have made in quite some time but one that also sees them delve into Electronica experimentation thanks to the great work created by Void Manes and Ni Maîtres.

Opening track King Of Rome is a Punk, Grunge and Sludge Metal monster with MELVINS using their short running time to create a slightly commercial and offbeat sound. The song has a bass heavy atmosphere that allows the Psychedelic and Electronica beats that manifests into a hallucinogenic and psychedelic wonderland. The screeching guitars adds a level of seedy grit and Buzz Osborne’s dominant guitars and impressive vocals adds a Classic Hard Rock sound that only the MELVINS can deliver.

Second track Vomit Of Clarity is an experimental based Drone/Glitch/Psych/Electronic offering which is a stark contrast to the brilliant opening track. This has a sparse environment for Void Manes and Ni Maîtres to fully flesh out with intricate trippy beats. The song lasts over two minutes and can be quite Post-Rock based that reminds me of their fellow Sludge Metallers LOWFLYINGHAWKS at times that other members of The Melvins family have collaborated on multiple occasions.

Third song Short Hair With A Wig marries up the sonic experimentation of the previous track with that classic long drawn out progressive energy that Melvins are highly fond of. The bass heavy guitar allows the Electronica beats to weave a dark tale of mistrust before the song finally transforms into a heavy SLUDGE monster with KIng Buzzo’s pounding guitars and Mike Dillard’s intelligent and effortless drumming that builds up one hell of a racket. The drone elements are subtle and overlap with the familiar riff-centric style with precise determination and allows MELVINS 83 to form and function as one cohesive unit which makes you want to hear when the epic eleven minutes run time is finally over.

Fourth track Victory Of The Pyramids follows the same riff-fuelled pattern of the opening track King Of Rome but with a longer and progressive style of Hard Rock, Psych Rock and Grunge that is perhaps my favourite track on the whole album. The sound seems quite comforting and warm-hearted at first with the subtle and almost radio-friendly Psychedelic instrumental beats but this is THE MELVINS we’re talking about where they experiment yet again before transforming this track into a sinister blend of Noise Rock and Punk Rock. This is the closest track we ever get to the modern day line-up of MELVINS and perhaps the reason why it’s my favourite track. The lyrics are playful with King Buzzo in superb form. The stripped back approach allows the band plenty of opportunity to play different strands of Hard Rock and Metal with a jazz delivery within the quieter moments. The final moments are powered by a nightmarish style of heavy electronics leading the creative charge.

The final track Venus Blood is MELVINS at their most gloomiest and doomiest with a creepy sound merging from the subtle Sludgy guitars. Howling noises only add a sense of the OCCULT into the mix before the Electronic sounds levels everything out for another pulsating style of harsh environments. The song does have a wicked STOP / START and SLOW / FAST approach with the band using everything with nuanced sounds to great effect.

Thunderball is on the short side running under thirty five minutes but it’s what’s contained within that short running time that allows MELVINS to create another classic sounding album to their legendary discography. This is also perhaps their most fun and offbeat record in years. This is another ALBUM OF THE YEAR contender for the band and I’m looking forward to the next creative chapter from this truly ICONIC band.

Review

First Impressions Of Hell is the debut album from Aussie Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metallers BIFTER who form a primal sound that’s inspired by the likes of Mastodon, High On Fire, CONAN and even AC/DC. The album blends classic Heavy Metal LORE and MYTHOLOGY within a classic style of storytelling that’s compounded by insane modern day STONER leaning themes with the intense growls, howls and splattered vocals that Rory Wheatley and Luke Martin conjure up on the record.

With a fast-paced narrative allowing some intense THRASH  instrumental movements to form within the longer tracks on the album which only adds a dangerous level of HEAVINESS to the party. The music does have a certain classic throwback energy hidden behind the scenes. However,  the violent Sludge Metal sounds allows BIFTER to play a menacing and violent attack on the senses especially when the music is slowed right down for a thrilling DRONE aspect to appear but be prepared for an onslaught of grimy Speed Metal sounds to FUCK up the destructive atmosphere which feels like Motorhead jamming with High On Fire at times.

The album does have its fair share of tracks that last under a minute or so which does slow the action right down and sometimes some of the primal excitement the longer tracks contain. That’s my only negative criticism of the record as for the most part BIFTER have delivered an action-packed and brutally dense album that’s quite EVIL and PRIMAL in places but still offer a fucking top-notch RIFF-CENTRIC album that’s perfect CANNON FODDER for the HEADBANGING MOB and UNDERGROUND SCENE to fully get behind.

My favourite tracks on the album are: Slow Burn, The Flagellant’s Feast, March Of The Imp and Belly Of The Beast. As these tracks are where BIFTER superbly combine old-school HEAVY METAL theatrics with the more violent WEEDIAN based grooves that are highly unapologetic at the same time. I feel that style of music is sometimes a lost art form within the world of Heavy Metal but BIFTER do their absolute best at bringing this style of music to a modern day audience.

Another great touch I liked through the album is the choice of clips from classic movies such as The Shining and The Karate Kid that fits the music so perfectly. The Shining, sure, as that's a legendary horror novel and horror film but The Karate Kid. However, BIFTER makes this work with a menacing and violent touch which is superbly funny as well. Kudos to that part of the album guys.

My final thoughts is that First Impressions Of Hell is absolutely superb and I’m hoping that BIFTER finds a loyal audience within the underground scene and builds upon the great promise they show on this great record.
