NAMAZU are a Stoner/Punk/Sludge/Noise Rock duo from Memphis, who sound like the bastard offspring of Torche and Big Business. As their debut album - Works Cited, is parts Stoner/Doom-Pop/Sludge Rock madness and blistering hardcore/noise rock sounds. The band know how to write great riffs matched against catchy lyrics that are held together by a pulsating Hard Rock/Metal score.
The opening two tracks Bactine and Gumwhale – sees NAMAZU play a fast-paced style of music with the band creating an almost pop like sound before settling down for harsher Sludge/Noise/Stoner Rock sound. This is an album that has something for everyone. The band have a huge likeability factor around their music and it is catchy and infectious as hell. NAMAZU match the early sounds of Red Fang and Torche before adding their own blend of Post-Hardcore/Noise Rock aggression.
You don't need to question the band's talent, drive or commitment to their musical craft as the band is made up of members from Hosoi Bros and Tanks. NAMAZU keep you entertained throughout the whole album as they keenly experiment with their sound. Even adding moments of Psych Rock and Garage Rock on later stages of the album.
Overall, NAMAZU's debut album is brilliantly entertaining violent fun that grabs the listener by the scruff of their neck and makes damn sure they are treated to some intense riffage for the next 40 mins or so. Hopefully NAMAZU will release more fantastic albums such as this. If not then there is no justice in the world.
