Review

Fried Chordata is the 4th album from Ukrainian Doom/Sludge Metallers Celophys and the first album that I’ve listened to the band. I didn’t know what to expect from this album and truth be told I was impressed from the first riff. As this album is a brutally heavy album that is influenced by bands such as CONAN, High On Fire and other bands of that ilk.

Celophys standout from the Doom/Sludge Metal crowd as they’re quite brave with their music. As the album is quite aggressive and features a dark WEEDIAN based sound lurking in the background. Celophys are not afraid of upsetting people on this album with their dark lyrics and brutal vocals creating a deeply unflinching sound.

The best songs on the album have to be: Anunnaki, Papaver, Magicae Mammuthus and Prehistoric Barn. As these songs contain the heaviest and most brutal sounds on the album. Celophys play at such a frantic pace that the album can be very hard to listen to at times. I had to take a small break from listening to the album from time to time.

Celophys are perhaps one of the loudest duo’s currently within the Doom/Sludge Metal scene and Fried Chordata is perhaps best suited for the more experienced Doom/Sludge Metal fan. As casual listeners won’t find much to enjoy here and that is a good thing. Celophys have created an album that is perhaps an acquired taste for some. However even I can’t deny there are some bone-crunching riffs that I could head-bang to all day long.

Fried Chordata is expertly produced and sounds fantastic from the start. If you’re in a pissed off mood and went to let off some steam then Celophys will be music to your ears.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
