Review
IGNIS is the new EP from Psych Doom/Stoner Rockers Cervus who are from the The Netherlands. They play a classic 90s style of Doom/Stoner Metal that feels like a more turbo-charged version of Kyuss and Fu Manchu but with a more gloomier outlook. The EP is quite fast-paced and bounces along at a cracking pace.
The music has a strong Desert Rock vibe with murky Blues Rock Psychedelics and some harsh growls that appear on the excellent opening song Scarecrow. This gives the band a strong 70s style Doom based vibe that almost ventures on the side of the Occult with the freaky Blues based Organs and Keyboards.
Cervus has six members within their ranks and the record has many different elements of Doom Metal/Stoner Rock that is superbly put together especially on the later songs such as: Run Baby Run, Queen Of Damnation and Paragon Of Hubris. The EP is quite volatile with it’s lyrical content and it’s good seeing Cervus playing to the more wicked side of things on the record.
The production is excellent with a heavy bass atmosphere which all the other members bounce against or rise up from to play their part in releasing a superbly entertaining EP. There are high levels of delicious FUZZ on the later stages that you can hear especially on Queen Of Damnation.
All in all, IGNIS is a major step up in quality for Cervus from their previous releases. This is a more well rounded EP that Cervus plays to their creative strengths and ultimately leaves the listener to hear more.
Excellent and HIghly Recommended.
