Review

Summoning Saturn Voids self-titled debut album is one that forges the heavy Psychedelic powers of bands such as Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd whilst traversing the Cosmic World of Spaced Out Doom Metal. What makes this album standout is the band’s brilliantly strategic use of Black Metal that is perhaps the dominant musical theme despite the heavy overlays of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal passages appearing.

The Black Metal aspect keeps everything in check and could be considered the referee of Summoning Saturn Voids blistering style of music. There’s a sinister and vintage level of Fuzz, Prog Rock and Ambient Themes that have an eerie Seventies Proto-Metal attitude with the more monolithic modern day Black & Roll approach which is still ultimately riff-centric throughout.

The opening batch of tracks of Cosmic Sabbath, Nihil Re-Genesis and Blackshift Alien God can easily draw comparisons to acts such as BONGZILLA and DOPETHRONE with the sublime vocals and down-tuned melodies that scream WEEDIAN excess even if they have a more nightmarish appeal to them.

The sudden emergence of the lush sounding Tangerine Dream inspired Psychedelic movements is quite beautiful here and the gloomy synths add a level of COSMIC class that allows Summoning Saturn Voids to be in a league of their own making. The record is quite deceptive with its pitch black aesthetics but it’s the intense storytelling that allows the band to push the boundaries of the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal scene to an extreme level whilst being quite bleakfully hopeful at times.

The band are not afraid in laying down Classic Hard Rock riffs that should really feel out of place on an album such as this but here we are with Summoning Saturn Voids living upto their Electric Wizard and Pink Floyd influences.

The sonic and cosmic landscapes become more apparent on tracks such as Blackshift Alien God and Technical Alien Heresy, Star Wreck and Siggy Stardust And The Bongsters From Space. These tracks alone allow Summoning Sonic Voids to fuse moments of poetic brutality with an apocalyptic and devastating style of underground WEEDIAN metal.

Nothing is what it seems with this record especially when the band employ a blackly comedic sense of humour into the mix within the lyrics and album titles. This record surprised me in a huge way as I was expecting a straightforward Blackened Doom Metal album but it’s everything that and more. This is a widely inventive album that will appeal to both fans of the Extreme Metal Scene and the more straightforward underground scene.

Summoning Saturn Voids debut album is purely demented genius with an array of outstanding tracks that leave you wanting to hear more. If you’re in the mood for a twisted and psychedelic journey of COSMIC proportions then this is the album for you.

Outstanding. End Of.
