Review

Psych/Doom/Stoner Metallers Bogwife return with their third full length album From Ashes where they’re bringing a thrilling Post-Stoner attitude into their music inspired by the likes of All Them Witches, ELDER and King Buffalo. The band’s trademark murky Doom, Stoner and Sludge grooves are still intact though merged with a mature sound compared to their previous two albums. With a slight Drone flavour emerging within the early stages of the album on tracks From Ashes, Shivering and No Church this allows Bogwife to add a distorted Grugne aesthetic into the mix with sludgy soundscapes soon transform into soulful bursts of Blues Rock based sounds.

The whole record flows and sounds naturally with the band playing music that feels almost alive within the heavier and riff-centric movements that leave you transfixed from beginning to end. The vocals from Mikkel Munk Iversen once more demonstrate a world-weary attitude to the album where you feel that this is a band who use their personal experiences to shape the whole creative landscape for the record. The stripped back production values sees Boowife channelling an almost Spaced Out energy with echoes of the legendary SLEEP and CLUTCH appearing on the later stages of the album.

From Ashes becomes more Apocalyptic Blues Rock dominated with each passing track but there are still massive examples of pure Doom/Stoner Metal instrumental insanity for Bogwife to fully explore with the listener and offer some highly memorable lyrics along the way mostly on tracks such as: Heavy Burden Blues, Agony and Chrysalis. There’s a wholly cinematic level of storytelling being projected on these tracks alone but it’s perhaps the instrumental melodies and psychedelic landscapes that will impress folks the most.

Bogwife's musical evolution is nothing short of breathtaking and a great example of how the band have changed their musical dynamics for better compared to their previous albums and that’s no small feat due to the band already having two critically acclaimed albums within the underground scene. However, From Ashes is way better on every level with the band demonstrating they maybe on the verge of achieving bigger and better things. And you know what, they truly deserve that kind of attention as this record is a HUGE SOUNDING record in every sense.
