Review

LOST is the new album Sludge/Stoner/Punk upstarts LowMad and this is their second full length album with the band developing a cool sounding style of Grunge based attitude along the way. This is my first exposure to LowMad’s music and I was mightily impressed with the different areas of music the band fuse together with a classic 1990’s Heavy Rock attitude whilst keeping with it’s Punk Rock credentials.

LOST is quite a bass heavy record with LowMad expertly delivering their down and dirty sound with a ferocious Grunge appetite which is added very early on the album on tracks such as Knette’s Garden, Kaleidoscope Dreams and V et XII. There is a solid CRUST PUNK and METALLIC groove being played with flashes of fractured Psychedelic Rock with LowMad playing fast and loose with the rules of underground Sludge/Stoner Metal.

You can hear influences from bands such as MOTORHEAD, High On Fire and Alice In Chains but with a downbeat Punk Rock momentum. The LOW & SLOW and AMPLIFIER DISTORTED methodology of music is applied superbly well which gives the album quite an experimental sound where you don’t know which direction the music ultimately takes. LowMad can be quite frantic and extremely erratic at times with the scattered stop/start approach and delivery of their music but this makes the record quite unforgiving and challenging to hear at times.

The vocals are solid throughout and matches the DIY PUNK ethos the the band play on LOST. Production values are bold and wholly aggressive with a seedy atmosphere that superbly fits into the PUNK ROCK movement ov LowMad’s creative identity. LOST can be quite THRASH, INDUSTRIAL and SPEED METAL orientated at times so expect a lot of different musical movements where you least expect this especially on the later stages of the record.

Other standout tracks include: Victims Of Catatrophe, Seems Better Than Nothing, Fake Identity and Satori. These tracks contain the heaviest and most interesting sounds on the album with LowMad perhaps being more confident on these tracks alone.

LOST is an excellent record packed full of different and wonderfully observed styles of Sludge and Stoner Metal with a menacing style of Punk Rock and Grunge being added to the mix.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
