Review

Disappearer is the second full length album from Psych/Stoner Rockers Snakes & Pyramids and it’s a great blend of different musical aesthetics that reminds me of NEBULA, FU MANCHU, Monster Magnet and The Sword. Snakes & Pyramids rely on a highly stylish mix of Grunge, Punk, Shoegaze and Fuzz Rock at the best of times. The sound is quite volatile with the explosive vocals the band ultimately delivers. There is a great interplay between all band members developing their own personality within the music.

The album gets off to a great start with High Plains Drifter and Black Swan Dive having quite an outlaw or outsider feel with Snakes & Pyramids bringing a Truckfighters style of Desert Rock and Fuzz surroundings into their own creative world. The music is always in your face with a slightly DIY sound coming from the production side of things which allows the band to have a Space Rock energy within both the heavier and melodic aspects of the record.

Snakes & Pyramids remain at their creative best when the sound of the album goes full-on Space Rock and with completely outrageous lyrics to match which starts to appear on Black Swan Dive and Full Throttle. Disappearer masters the type of music that Monster Magnet first made their name with back in the day but Snakes & Pyramids are still developing their own great blend of Intergalactic Stoner Rock.

The album does have a gritty undertone with subtle bursts of melodic aggression on the later stages of the record but the band do show winning moments of slow paced Shoegaze which adds a sense of calm to proceedings. Snakes & Pyramids are always thinking outside of the Stoner Rock sandbox by fusing different musical elements into the mix which does succeed from start to finish.

The final batch of tracks of Unfreedom, All The Same and Seven Gods has a slightly more destructive and apocalyptic quality with Snakes & Pyramids closing the album on a bleak sounding message but with still a high amount of cool sounding Psychedelic soundscapes, landscapes and epic sounding grooves.

Disappearer is a stylish and superbly entertaining entry with Snakes & Pyramids delivering an excellent and action packed release. Check out when you can. Great stuff!!!
