Review

Sludge/Stoner Metallers Domkraft celebrate their tenth anniversary as a band by re-releasing their acclaimed 2015 debut EP. Since then, the band have released four albums, two EPs, and a live record to critical acclaim within the Heavy Rock scene. The original EP was my first introduction to this great band and the signs were already there with Domkraft’s heavy fusion of Prog, Psych, Sludge, Doom and Stoner grooves contained within a heavy vortex of Cosmic Metal.

Domkraft have re-released their debut EP and have upgraded this to full length album status by adding two new tracks Spiral Man and The Bane to this new version. The original’s EP vibe and energy is still here with minimal interference within the recordings though some parts do sound a letter fresher, fuzzier and heavier compared to the original release. You can hear glimpses of Domkraft’s trademark Cosmic Fuzz heavy sound that’s underplayed against a torrent of frantic Sludge/Stoner Metal grooves that pays respect to the likes of Monster Magnet and SLEEP.

The band may have transformed into a heavier, riffier and progressive unit from this moment on but it’s great to hear where it all started especially within the outstanding original four tracks of Concrete Waves, Horses Horses, Invaders and Treeman. As back then, Domkraft weren’t the finished article here and it’s still great to feel and hear the band developing their highly destructive sound when the heavier distorted elements appear.

The vocals from Martin Wegeland have stood the tests of time with this release and his delivery hasn’t changed much over the last decade. The songwriting and technical musicianship of the band has brilliantly developed and improved with each subsequent release.

The two new tracks of Spiral Noises and The Bane maybe perhaps better to the likes of Seeds and Sonic Moon but these are a great inclusion to this record which shows how Domkraft have crafted their own great style of Psychedelic and Space Rock exploration. The vocals have a modern day energy to them and can be quite volatile with the music being more Space Rock dominant with an underlying current of frenzied Sludge guitars that is quite refreshing with the intense grounded assault of Domkraft’s other members of Martin Widholm (guitars) and Anders Dahlgren (drums) playing their part as well in cementing as Domkraft’s status as one of the most essential Sludge/Stoner Metal bands to know about right now.

If you haven’t heard of Domkraft before then this is the perfect place to start with a highly captivating and superbly realized vision packed full of COSMIC DOOM and EPIC SPACE SLUDGE grooves. Long time fans will be in absolute HEAVEN with this release with their classic debut EP given the full length album makeover it truly deserves.
