Tjeerd de Jong - Everything

Review

Fuzz Thrower is the new project from Tjeerd de Jong (Phantom Druid, Canyon Company and Black Afterglow) where he says in his own word why he created this project: “couldn't resist recording an album with Jazzmaster, SG, Les Paul, Fuzz pedals, and tube amplifiers, taking a minimalist approach.”

Fuzz Thrower is a Fuzz, Grunge and Stoner Rock based record with Tjeerd de Jong perhaps being quite experimental with those genres of music and inspired by the likes of QOTSA, Alice In Chains, SLEEP, Black Sabbath and FU MANCHU but I would also add the likes of A Perfect Circle at times. The record does keep with the minimalistic approach that Tjeerd mentions within his description and the sound is very stripped back with lo-fi production values being quite messy in places but it adds a real sense of RAW aggression and true heaviness throughout.

The music is always constantly evolving which taps into the 1990’s Alt Rock, Grunge and Stoner Rock scenes from the very start with tracks such as Stonewall Angel, Beam and The End Is Open having an undercurrent of Sludge Rock seediness within the dramatic use of Fuzz Pedals and Amplifier Distortion. Tjeerd’s vocals feel inspired by the overall Grunge and Shoegaze scenes with an understated vocal performance. Sometimes they do feel out of place but then a few seconds later when the heavy solid grooves appear everything makes sense with the excellent fourth track Nowhere being the perfect example.

Tjeerd’s vocals have a slightly offbeat and minimal presence to them especially compared to his other musical projects he’s provided vocals for. The album does become more DOOM & GLOOM” based on the second half of the album with songs such as Drooler, Ocean In The Sky and Pictures Of The Moon adding a heavier level of distortion and downright seediness with the FUZZ based Sludge guitars.

Fuzz Thrower’s debut album is quite a grounded album which allows Tjeerd de Jong to superbly experiment with different musical instruments and different genres of music. The production values are a mixed bag at times but nothing that will stop your overall enjoyment of the whole creative journey that Fuzz Thrower takes you upon. It’s great seeing Tjeerd’s creative partner Shane Beck (Black Afterglow) making a Spoken Word appearance on Ocean In The Sky.

Overall, this is quite an addictive and excellent album to listen to which has many great things going for it and I do want to see what direction Tjeerd de Jong takes next with Fuzz Thrower as there’s some epic ideas that he could easily expand upon.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
