Review

Begho is a Doom/Sludge Metal band from India with their music drawing upon their local folklore for their debut release “I”. The record lasts for twenty two minutes with the band showing a fine style of Doom, Sludge, Stoner, Heavy Metal and even Grunge for a sound that’s quite gloomy and seedy in all the right places. I was expecting a similar style of music to fellow Indian Doomsters BEVAR SEA but Begho took a different route especially with the excellent opening track The Lure.

The Lure features Sushan Shetty ( Cosmic Infusion and Infernal Wrath) which is an instrumental track with gloomy sounds that could easily come from a COSMIC HORROR movie with its foreboding sense of dread and doom. Quite an unsettling track with Begho and Sushan Shetty perfectly setting the scene.

Second track Meat Missile is a Grunge, Doom and Hard Rock offering with Biprorshee Das’s vocals having a sense of CLASSIC HARD ROCK showmanship throughout. The music is dominated by a great style of Sludge and Stoner based grooves which has a great flamboyant style that calls upon the likes of Saint Vitus, Black Sabbath, Alice In Chains and JUDAS PRIEST with Begho effortlessly playing through multiple different eras of HEAVY ROCK within the whole time frame of the song. Things do become more sinister towards the end with Biprorshee’s vocals being slightly demonic but it works superbly well.

Third track Steal From The Rich, Keep has a PUNK ROCK energy burning within the background with Degho once again keeping up with that classic Doom Metal style that brings elements of Grunge, Hard Rock and Proto-Metal into the mix. The sound is always engaging with a slight NWOBHM appearing within the lyrics and how the music is ultimately played especially within the flashy instrumental solos which are plentiful and also action packed.

Begho is made up of well known members from the Mumbai HEAVY METAL scene who are known for playing  more extreme styles of music. Kiron Kumar (Guitars), Varun Panchal (Guitars & Backing Vocals), Jay Thacker (Drums) and Saurav Das (Bass) are the other members of the band and they generate some sublime and quite intense melodies on this EP which does venture into other areas of the HEAVY METAL scene. Everything is quite grounded with Begho never going over the top which allows this EP to genuinely thrive within the final two tracks of Begho and King.

Biprorshee’s vocals hit some incredible high notes with excellent vocal support from Varun Panchal on the standout track of Begho. The grooves are fast-paced and highly volatile when the band fully hit their creative and technical strive before everything is said and done.

“I” is an action packed EP with top-notch production values to match which should allow Begho to gain a loyal and dedicated cult following with the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal underground scene. If you want music that’s played with real passion by real musicians then Begho is the band for you.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
