Review

Celestial Haze debut EP is a twenty four minute release spread over two epic musical compositions which draws influences from the likes of ELDER and WEEDPECKER. However, Celestial Haze relies on a grounded Spaced Out attitude with a sludgy and bass heavy Progressive sound that allows everything to form within the Stoner Rock landscape.

The sound is quite vivid with its stripped back recording methods that have been applied to this EP. The vocals are slightly reminiscent of ELDER’s Nick DiSalvo in places with a deeply committed performance from Darek Luja. Derek started this project as a one-man project back in his home country of Finland before he relocated to Austria and now Celestial Haze is in the process of becoming a fully formed band.

There’s a lovely sense of warmth and belonging emitting from the speakers with Celestial Haze creating a great style of Post-Rock, Space Rock, Heavy Psych and Stoner Rock surroundings with sublime deft touches of Ambient themes that appear throughout the whole record. The record could have done with one more song just to develop the eerie mood that appears on the later stages of both songs. 

However, Celestial Haze are fully committed in creating heavy monolithic soundscapes with plenty of Sludge Rock aggression when it’s needed most especially within the standout opening track The Ruin. The sound is quite raw and superbly honest which feels like this is how Celestial Haze would sound like in the real world. 

If you miss the early days of ELDER (ELDER and Dead Roots Stirring) then Celestial Haze are the closest thing to reach that level but adding their own great sound into the mix which they apply on the excellent final track of The Mending. The sweeping Sludge Rock landscapes that develop transform into massive waves of Classic Rock, Desert Rock and Prog Rock grooves. The song can be calm and melodic but also unruly disruptive which gives Celestial Haze a rebellious edge that should serve them well if the guys are in this for the long haul.

I know it’s early days but I’m feeling within time that Celestial Haze will explore other creative avenues within the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Rock scene which will make them a force to be reckoned with. I have it on good authority the band are already working hard on their next chapter and I’m absolutely excited to hear what Celestial Haze come up with next as this is an unmissable release.

Review

Drone/Doom/Sludge Metal instrumentalist Void Sinker offers another round of distorted misery with their latest chapter called Pitch Black Sun. Influenced by the wretched and cursed summer weather that Guglielmo Allegro experienced in his native home country of Italy, this record continues a similar journey heard on the last record of Cycle. This record has a gut-wrenching drone sound that holds everything down into the depths of Sludge based DOOM METAL. 

There’s a crushing Pitch-Black delivery that allows Void Sinker to create overlapping areas of pure violent distortion with a sweeping Post-Metal sound that has a gloomy aquatic energy that is disturbingly played for long stretches of mind expanding psychological terror.  The three part EP aligns the music closely to the likes of BONG, SUNN O))) and EARTH with no sense of upbeat energy appearing at all.

The thick industrial beats and massive chasms expand even more violently on the epic second track “BLACK” with even more layers of evil sounding DRONE METAL coming up from the depths of hell. The subtle chants can be heard which adds a classic Seventies Horror Movie effect with brief excursions into Cosmic Horror along the way.

Pitch Black Sun lasts for around twenty five minutes but it’s another cautionary and superb record from Void Sinker where they feel rejuvenated by the great use of Black Metal dynamics that perfectly matches the downbeat cover that illustrates what to expect for this record. The Ambient melodies have a distinctive Ambient Metal attitude with Guglielmo performing long drawn out instrumental sounds that feel like a mentally and physically exhausting workout before everything is said and done.

Void Sinker impresses yet again with another sublime release that’s perhaps his most intense, darkest and droned out record in quite some time. This is one perhaps for dedicated followers of Void Sinker only but what a great experience that ultimately awaits them.

Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers Rust Lords bring a Hardcore Punk flavour to their latest EP - Suffer Eternal. There’s even a healthy dose of Crossover Thrash that gives Rust Lords a vibrant and seedy energy with their blend of lo-fi heavy grooves. The EP is superbly aggressive from the start with the Hardcore Punk vocals from Kyle Roy which has a classic Crossover influence running throughout. The music itself is superbly technical when the fast-paced melodies appear on different sections of the record.

Rust Lords like to play around with the rules and conventions of the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal scenes they closely align themselves to. As the music goes through many different transformations which gives Suffer Eternal quite a highly original approach with that great Hardcore Punk and Doom Metal sound that reminds me of Saint Vitus and Corrosion Of Conformity on tracks such as Louis, Bubba, Jack and Adrian. 

The EP lasts for around twenty minutes but Rust Lords employ a great style of Doom Metal and Stoner Metal that manages to be quite playful and superbly hard-hitting along the way. When the band find their Psychedelic swagger, the EP becomes very trippy and self aware with a delicious level of FUZZ METAL that really makes the record really standout. You start to notice the fast-paced riffs even more with some fast-paced Thrash Metal beats that should appeal to fans of Motorhead and High On Fire with some great riff-centric passages moving into areas of Distorted based heaviness.

Suffer Eternal could have easily done with another song as everything suddenly ends once Rust Lords are fully in their musical element but the guys show a lot of promise here which should allow them to build a loyal following within the underground scene. Check this superb EP when you have the time and be prepared for a highly unapologetic style of aggressive Doom/Stoner Metal that takes no prisoners when everything is said and done.

Review

How To Build A Mountain is the latest EP from Brūte which sees the band develop a AMPLIFIER DISTORTED style of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal. The level of distortion is one of the main strengths that allows Brūte to develop a great style of riff-driven music that has vast amounts of Grunge, Psych and Fuzz moving in the background. The vocals are quite gruff and matches the seedy grunge atmosphere that’s played throughout the whole EP.

The music seems to be influenced by the likes of Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, FU MANCHU, Red Fang, KYUSS and SLEEP which you can hear within the superb opening track Peacemule. The melodies and messy reverb sounds all play a strong part for Brūte to play a mean sound which develops into heavier strands of Desert/Fuzz Rock with an epic Sludge Rock delivery. 

Though, the band really start to impress within the standout second track of Stone & Silence which starts off with a deceiving stripped back delivery with a haunting Grunge mix allowing Brūte to add a brooding Alt-Rock theme into the mix. The song does start off cautiously slow with eerie vocals that have a certain classic Nineties dominant energy to them. Brūte feels more comfortable when playing that great style of sludgy “DOOM & GLOOM” instrumental passages. If you ever wondered what Truckfighters would sound like if they become part of the Doom Metal world then Stone & Silence is the answer to that question. 

Brūte continue to develop their slightly progressive sound to a more destructive environment which fully leads the way into the stunning final title track How To Build A Mountain. Though, the song starts off quite slow paced yet again which allows Brūte more than enough time to build solid foundations of DOOM & GLOOM based rhythms that does push this EP into destructive areas of reverb and fuzzy feedback. 

This is Brūte’s first release in over four years and it’s definitely been worth the wait as this feels like a different band compared to their superb 2022 debut EP. If you want an EP that’s full of distorted grooves that branch off into a violent style of Desert Rock/Metal with all of the trappings of Sludge/Stoner Metal then How To Build A Mountain has all the answers that you’re currently looking for. 

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

The Heavy Crawls return with their latest release originally titled EP. This is the project from hugely talented multi-instrumentalist Max Tovstyi as he explores his passionate love affair with all things Classic Rock sounding. Though, there’s a healthy mix of Psych, Garage and Stoner Rock melodies for a record that’s both heavy and laid-back at the same time. 

The EP is mostly expressed through a great style of Seventies Hard Rock with an easy-going attitude but Max does show his Heavy Rock credentials throughout the stunning opening track on tracks such as Fuel. Exploring musical themes that have a real emotional quality to them .Max even delves into his Ukrainian heritage with the Folk Rock based second track Dearest Mother Of Mine. It’s quite a sombre Blues Rock number with Max honouring his roots with a splendid vocal performance being played throughout. 

However, it’s back to business with the toe-tapping third track Who Do You Want Me To Be which offers a rebellious slice of music with Max operating with a cool sounding Americana vibe. The sound is quite grounded and fast-paced with The Heavy Crawls expanding that cool sounding Blues Rock swagger.

The final two tracks of Heart Turned Cold and Worried Blues delves even further into the Blues Rock atmosphere with small vibes of Psych Rock appearing with some frenzied screeching Blues based guitars showcasing some intense instrumental solos which really adds some gloomy atmospherics into the mix. 

The Heavy Crawls have released a quietly confident and superbly understated release that has some excellent vintage production values to bring everything to life. It’s not the heaviest thing you’ll hear but The Heavy Crawls have crafted a hugely enjoyable slice of music that brings some mighty fine cool sounding Blues Rock, Psych, Classic and Stoner Rock grooves that will leave you with a huge smile on your face and leave you wholly refreshed.

Review

Heavy Drama is the debut EP from Doom/Grunge/Sludge/Stoner Rockers Pomroe who have emerged from the Polish Heavy Rock underground scene and they have similar sounds to bands that have already made their presence known over the years. There’s a stubborn and aggressive attitude to Pomroe which makes their music have an uneasy atmosphere which is heard very early on within their debut release.

There’s an early Deftones presence which allows Pomroe build a determined level of intense murky sounds with a gloomy attitude appearing within tracks such as Tabby and Outside. There’s a slight Post-Punk and Alt-Metal movement heard within how the music is delivered. This has some disjointed and stripped back elements which gives the music a slight chaotic feel but the committed enthusiasm of Pomroe to deliver some great sounding Sludge/Stoner Metal ideas throughout..

The vocals from Maria Zgoda feel quite different to what I originally anticipated. As they’re quite grounded but perhaps best suited to a full on Alt-Metal or Post-Metal style of music and not music such as Pomroe ultimately deliver. However, this works to Pomroe’s advantage as it gives the band a great sullen vibe or energy of their own making where you can hear echoes of TOOL and A Perfect Circle emerging on tracks such as Tabby, Outside and Slime.

The music on the later stages of Heavy Drama has a great Post-Doom / Post-Sludge methodology appearing whilst exploring areas of Drone and Distortion which can only be described as pure paranoia in cases. There’s an underlying sense of dread developing which has the hallmarks of early-era Nine Inch Nails but fully contained within the world of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal.

Heavy Drama does feel unpolished at times but this only adds to the uncomfortable feeling you get from listening to the EP and makes it an even better audio experience as a result. It’s not perfect and is perhaps best described as a “WORK IN PROGRESS" but Pomroe have piqued my interest and I’m definitely interested to hear what they will be releasing next.

Neurogeneisis is the debut EP from Progressive Sludge Metallers Heathen Tongues who add a Crust Punk attitude amongst the Grunge, Doom, Post-Metal and Stoner Metal surroundings which changes aggressive attitude throughout the short eleven minutes runtime of the EP. The band have the legendary talents of Brad Boatright on mastering duties and Matt Bayles on mixing duties who have perhaps both help to build and shape the modern day Sludge/Post-Metal scene over the last twenty five years.

This serves Heathen Tongues brilliantly well who forge close sonic alliances to the likes of Pelican, YOB, SLEEP and Red Fang. The EP is purely instrumental with both tracks of Revelation and Firefight having a wide assortment of Crust Punk and Post-Metal grooves with that biting Progressive Sludge Metal environment bringing surprising elements of Psych, Grunge and Stoner Rock into the foray. 

Each song has a great metallic narrative which allows this hugely talented two piece sound like a bigger band with more members than the core duo of Devin Mendoza (Guitar) and Shane Falkenhart (Drums). The gloomy use of the speech from the classic Charlie Chaplin film The Dictator gives a harsh and unsettling reality which comes mostly into focus on Firelight. 

Neurogenesis is one of the strongest debut EP’s I’ve heard in quite some time with Heathen Tongues having some great things to say and without the use of vocals makes it even more emotionally powerful. If you’re here for the grooves and bleak melodies then Heathen Tongues have you covered but only for eleven minutes but it does keep you wanting to hear more and that’ only a good thing.

Heathen Tongues will be releasing their debut album in February 2027 in which both of these tracks will appear and I can’t wait to hear the complete narrative of what they form. As these guys have real potential to release something special and definitely a band to really look out for next year.

Feeding On Fireworks is the next exciting chapter from Alt-Rock/Post-Rock/Sludge Rockers Vordermann who released their acclaimed debut EP Feeding On Flowers back in March 2025. Vordermann continue with a similar musical and creative scope outlined on that great release with uplifting Doom-Pop surroundings that once again demonstrates a wealth of musical influences ranging from TORCHE, HUM, MASTODON and THE MELVINS.

The record opens with gloriously uplifting and easy going track Ego Gland which has a soulful Psychedelic Post-Rock energy where the sludgy guitars form a sweet natured drive with superb vocals to match. This is a song that has different areas of HEAVY ROCK forming with Vordermann moving into slightly Ambient based waters with a sudden influx of PELICAN based melodies being played on fthe later stages of the track before returning to the Post-Stoner Rock grooves that are being used for the first time.

Second song The Salem Shake is a slightly different vibe with Vordermann adding a Post-Doom vibe with little traces of Gothic imagery especially with the vocals and eerie synths. You can even detect some classic ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and King Crimson melodies forming and even the vocals aligning themselves to the arena of Seventies Prog Rock. Though, Vordermann like to tease with audience expectations before laying down their usual blend of fast-paced Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs that have a certain Space Rock momentum to them.

The final track "Something Sacred Something Terrible" opens up with the legendary “Can You See Texas On Your High Horse” speech from the classic TV series - True Detective which sets up the gloomy scene of this track. The song has a stripped back presence with sludgy semi acoustic guitars that offer a despairing style of Americana, Country and Doom-Pop soundscapes which is some of the best music I’ve heard from Vordermann yet. The track is unapologetically solitary before the band explore the finer details of the Sludge, Doom and Stoner Metal landscape that also offer the heaviest, finest and most intense sounds on the whole EP.

Feeding On Fireworks is an excellent and even better follow-up to their stunning debut EP which sees Vordermann mature into better songwriters and storytellers which bodes well for their future releases. I’m hoping their next release is their debut album as this EP is too damn short and I wanted to hear more music from this hugely talented outfit. 

If Vordermann continues with this musical journey and keeps creating superb records as Feeding On Flowers and Feeding On Fireworks then these guys are on the right path for a very distinguished and highly rewarding career within the underground scene and beyond.

Alternative/Sludge/Stoner Metallers The Home self-titled debut EP is quite an intriguing record with the band playing stripped back sounds that merge modern day Sludge Rock/Metal grooves against a classic Fuzz, Doom and Proto-Metal energy. The vocals are quite different with lead vocalist LJ Brazil performing in areas of Classic Doom, Hard Rock, Stoner Metal and even a great experimental style which has a slight Mike Patton influence.

The EP lasts under fourteen minutes but The Home creates some stirring grooves powered by elements of Alt Metal within the flashier aspects that appear throughout. There’s even traces of Soul, Funk and Blues Rock hidden amongst the Doom & Gloom melodies which provides a brutal style of amplified Sludge Rock/Metal on tracks Disguise and Beyond It All.

They’re not the finished article by no means but they have a great sound of their own making which can be quite freaky, outlandish and superbly progressive. The final track Leech allows The Home to prove they have some unfinished business for their next release as it does feel open ended where you’re expecting a massive instrumental riff to power through.

This is a great record for The Home to introduce themselves with as they do generate some HEAVY SOUNDING moments throughout and the production values ain’t half bad either. Some of the musical ideas don’t fully succeed but I’m quite excited to see what The Home delivers next.

Dead Man Talking is the debut EP from Post-Rock/Stoner Rock instrumentalists Hostile Tides where the band are influenced by the likes of QOTSA, Long Distance Calling and Russian Circles which gives this band a whole lot of different attitude throughout their debut EP. The music is action packed and superbly played throughout with Hostile Tides developing a classic bouncy Stoner Rock sound that’s levelled out by a solid Progressive Post-Rock theme.

There’s even shades of KYUSS developing within the heavier and fast-paced surroundings of the superb opening track of Sands. This is a very short little number but it moves along at a great speed with the band laying down their creative building blocks very early on with the music having the right amount of Post-Rock aggression with even subtle moments of jazzy movements.

Second song Rumour feels like a stripped back Post-Rock track with little shades of Desert/Stoner Rock melodies bursting from the seams. There’s some Punk-ish sounds that develop within the later stages of the track and off-beat chants appearing along the way. This is quite an experimental song in many ways but it contains an intriguing way of playing a solid Instrumental sound that moves quietly and confidently throughout the Stoner Rock and Post-Rock passages that appear here.

Third track Adrift allows Hostile Tides to drift further into the Alt-Rock persona with dreamy passages of intricate Psychedelic Rock emerging with the song having a sludgy bassline courtesy of Luke’s great bass playing. The ambient delivery is razor sharp without being heavy but the band once again wander into different shades of Heavy Stoner Rock with that heavy jazzy sound appearing once more. The song is perhaps the most daring that’s contained on the EP.

The final two tracks of Pyramids and Peaks offer the most experimental and progressive moments on the record with Hostile Tides showcasing a great way of playing through the “QUIET vs HEAVY” and “SLOW vs FAST” dynamics of their music. The song is actually quite fun despite the gloomy Post-Rock pretence that holds things together.

Peaks is the longest track which allows Hostile Tides to let out all their freaky aggression for the standout track on the EP which taps right into the QOTSA influence right from the very start where you can feel a soundtrack quality emerging from the catacombs which I would like to hear more of in future releases from the band.

Dead Man Talking is a great introduction from Hostile Tides to introduce themselves to the underground heavy rock scene with. There’s some great sonic creativity at play here and the stripped back production values are handled expertly well with some heavy outbursts of Stoner Rock/Metal developing when you least expect it.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

What is at the beginning of eternity, the end of time, the beginning of every end, and the end of every place? is the debut EP from Stoner Metallers Johnny Tirade & The Circle Of Futures Past. The record is a great mix of Stoner, Punk, Psych, Sludge and Doom with a great slice of grimy Industrial Metal. Imagine Monster Magnet jamming with Ministry and that’s where you end up with this cool sounding band. It’s quite a raw sounding record with it’s Punk Rock based vocals that remind me of other classic sounding Hard Rock bands.

The record lasts around thirty two minutes with extended instrumental Stoner jams that have that classic Monster Magnet energy to them. Sometimes the record can be a bit manic the best of times but everything is played with purpose especially on the shorter tracks of Hey Man, Lizard Johnny, American Dream and Tried To Improv Something Cool. You can hear some classic FU MANCHU vibes along the way that’s merged with classic Heavy Metal themes. 

The standout track has to be the epic third track Memory Hole which lasts around seventeen minutes in length. This is where Johnny Tirade & The Circle Of Futures Past go all out and employ every musical and creative trick they have at their disposal for a mind warping STONER METAL odyssey which sees the sludgy and industrial sounds to fully emerge. The sound is also held together by a distorted DOOM METAL vibe which oozes danger from the very start. The LOW & SLOW and FEEDBACK sound effects allows the band to opt for a gloomy stripped back sound.

Though, the thumping bass allows Johnny Tirade & The Circle Of Futures Past to venture back into the Stoner Metal arena with some soundclips of The Riddler (Jim Carrey) from Batman Forever appearing before more hard hitting vocals appear. Then a saxophone appeared out of nowhere which almost took me out of the whole record. I’m not the biggest admirer of Saxophone appearing within Doom/Stoner Metal but it’s not too bad here. That’s my only complaint for a demented and cool sounding track such as this. 

What is at the beginning of eternity, the end of time, the beginning of every end, and the end of every place? Is what the classic Monster Magnet debut record “TAB” would sound like if it was given a modern day schizophrenic Industrial Metal makeover.
