Review

The Space Rock/Doom/Stoner Metal collective known as REDWOOD wasn’t kidding that they would be back bigger than ever with their next album and they’ve truly proven that point with their latest expedition into the further edges of the COSMOS with HYPERSPACE. Following six months on after their critically acclaimed album Time To Lose, this time round REDWOOD leans further and heavily into the legendary Nineties Stoner Metal scene. 

The MONSTER MAGNET and FU MANCHU influence is there but REDWOOD adds some gloriously OTT soundtrack sensibilities to their music and some heavy use of Progressive Rock storytelling elements to the album. Hyperspace feels like a pure cinematic event and perhaps the perfect soundtrack to a classic video game of the PS2 and XBOX era of gaming. Maybe I’m slightly overselling the album but that’s the feeling I got from listening to the record as REDWOOD fully delves into the folklore of Stoner Metal, Psych Rock and Space Rock with a renowned sense of progressive purpose. 

The opening batch of songs Highway Nova, Hyperspace and Another Planet demonstrates a fine level of intricate FUZZ details that moves into heavier areas of dominant Stoner Metal melodies which does have that deep Monster Magnet influence which appears even within the spaced out guitars that have a certain Ed Mundell quality to them. It’s a great style of music that develops into REDWOOD’s own way of delivering high voltage and action packed Space Rock themes. The lyrics always have that “BIGGER THAN LIFE” attitude with raucous vocals to match.

There is still a sense of gritty realism appearing within the sludgy sounds that appear from time-to-time. The music is always catchy and superbly fast-paced where REDWOOD packs a lot of intense musical movement within the lengthy sixty two minutes the album lasts for. Despite the fantastical elements of the album, Hyperspace is quite a grounded record especially with some of the lyrics and creative messages that's outlined within the whole journey with the emerging threat of “A.I.” posing to the whole of mankind. REDWOOD has found an excellent way to offer their own perspective on this threat but do this through the power of Doom Metal and Stoner Metal.

REDWOOD continues his great use of Ambient and Trippy sound effects heard on his previous albums but this time they’re used in a more distorted manner which just highlights the dangerous effect that “A.I.” could have upon us all. Sometimes the album does feel a bit too long at times with certain songs but the listener does experience some intense SONIC musical passages that moves into heavier Sludge Metal waters with a thrilling Atmospheric delivery appearing when you least expect it.

Other great tracks to check out are: Got A Feeling, Land Of Ancient Nothing, Opium and Stimulants, Asteroid, Invades and the amazing final track Future (which is REDWOOD’s best track they’ve created by a long mile). These tracks contain the most interesting, heaviest and doomed out grooves on the whole record and you can feel REDWOOD’s own thoughts and creative persona being expressed through their music. 

Hyperspace may feel quite long at times but the real reward is the actual destination with REDWOOD finally coming into their own creative existence which could propel them to bigger things within the Stoner Rock/Metal scene. The instrumental work is stellar throughout with a SHIT-TON of epic instrumental passages and wicked guitar solos transporting you back to the classic heyday of Nineties Stoner Metal where the likes of FU MANCHU, SLEEP, KYUSS and MONSTER MAGNET ruled the entire mother-trucking universe. 

REDWOOD have just released their best record to date and this will perhaps be the album I will rank their future records against. This is seriously a grand musical adventure that’s perfectly made for the WEEDIAN generation.

Cosmic Doom/Stoner Metal Collective REDWOOD Releases New Song FUTURE From Upcoming New Album HYPERSPACE

California's institution of one-man heavy psych and space rock returns with epic new album "HYPERSPACE", cranking up the out-of-this world vibes and delivering ten tracks as only REDWOOD can.

Single "FUTURE" leads the charge with an 11 minute space odyssey, out now and streaming everywhere.

In the band's own words:

The single “FUTURE” dives into the unfortunate reality that we might not be in control of our future as a species, no matter how determined we are to make the world a better place, no matter how much we try to live in the moment, no matter how much progress we make in our society. There are times in life where I feel like the future is a sentient creature, and no matter what we do, it will do what it wants. It rules us like a dictator, and any evolutionary step forward we make in the world, feels futile at times. This song is written from the eyes of the sentient creature that we call “FUTURE”.

With "HYPERSPACE", this newest chapter of REDWOOD is easily my personal favorite so far, and I’ve been hard at work since the moment I finished the album “TIME TO LOSE”.

As a completely self-taught solo project, every album has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve through persistence and hard work.

At 10 songs, this is my longest release to date, bringing together many of my favorite elements from everything I've created so far, as well as re-recordings of songs from my previous solo project “Bloodshot Buffalo”. I don't do this for money or recognition—I do it to create something that might outlast me. If there's one REDWOOD album I'd recommend listening to, it's this one. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.

Review

Cosmic Doom/Stoner Rock Entity Redwood returns with their latest sonic excursion into Space with their next chapter - Time To Lose. That seems to be the actual case with Redwood returning quite suddenly after only releasing their last album Cloud Colony in October 2025 to a wave of rave reviews from the underground scene. This time round Redwood drifts into a more aggressive and looser style of music with the melodies becoming thicker and heavier along the way. Redwood taps into the classic MONSTER MAGNET school of psychedelic passages with echoes of MCS and The Stooges being played along the way.

This is quite a varied and cinematic journey with Redwood applying that Psychedelic and Post-Stoner creative logic that made Cloud Colony such a raging success especially on the superb opening tracks of Wormhole, Congregation and King Bid.

There’s a destructive style of Fuzz, Desert and Sludgy sounds colliding for a record that isn’t afraid to step back away from the modern day production vibes for a more realistic and ground appeal. This allows the instrumental parts of the record to become their own thing especially when spliced with areas of Post-Rock, Ambient and Prog Rock just to make the mood extra “SPICED OUT” indeed.

The record fully kicks into gear from perhaps the fourth track with Redwood becoming more SCI-FI and SPACE ROCK obsessed with the music even when the lyrics have a real life “grounded” approach. Redwood’s vocals are absolutely “ON FIRE” throughout with his grizzled “Garage Rock” or “Street level” delivery adding a sense of gritty realism the whole journey. 

Other standout tracks to check out are Time To Lose, Contact and the epic final track Blue Mass which sees Redwood become possessed by an “Intergalactic Being” with the music is constantly evolving into different styles of Post-Doom, Heavy Psych and Stoner Metal grooves that ultimately builds upon the melodies, sounds and messages contained on the last album.

Redwood has delivered the goods yet again with Time To Lose which perhaps confirms we can expect more twisted expeditions into the COSMOS in 2026 that I’m quite excited to hear. If you’re new to Redwood’s world then check this great album out now and check out his excellent previous two records that will transport your whole being into the far reaches of space and beyond.

Cosmic Doom/Stoner Rock Entity REDWOOD Releases new single & music video "TIME TO LOSE" out now! Album out January 30th

Hot off the heels of 2025's full-length CLOUD COLONY, California’s heavy psych cosmonaut REDWOOD is back to kick off the new year with a brand new album.

TIME TO LOSE is an evolution of the REDWOOD you know and love. Atop the bedrock of fuzzed out stoner and space rock, tireless mastermind Sheafer McComber expands his craft to new vistas and sounds.

Twists and turns abound to add new elements to the REDWOOD sound as well, not least of which is the rough turn of vocals on bruiser of a track “HIGHWAY IS MY WAY”, possibly the heaviest slab of REDWOOD riffage to date. Track “TITAN” sees McComber work some cosmic wizardry with synth pedals, creating a space oasis for listeners to float upon into the album’s epic 11-minute-plus finale “BLUE MASS”.

TIME TO LOSE is a milestone in the REDWOOD catalogue, a triumph of pushing limits, exploring new dimensions, and of course laying down an avalanche of heavy rock righteousnes.

Review

After releasing two acclaimed EP’s with 2024’s Dry Rivers and 2025’s Sky Offering, the cosmic entity known as Redwood returns with their latest full length album of Cloud Colony. This feels like a natural extension and musical evolution from what they achieved with Sky Offering but perhaps on a grander and more cinematic scope. The music is boosted by a classic Stoner Rock energy with moments of Warped Psychedelics and Spaced Out Doom that keeps them closely aligned to the likes of Howling Giant and King Buffalo. 

Redwood wisely include elements of Fuzz, Heavy Metal and Garage Rock into their music which give Cloud Colony a grounded approach despite the COSMIC DOOM surroundings of the whole record. Everything is played at an aggressive fast pace with Redwood sounding like they’re bracing themselves for musical impact on all of the tracks.

There’s an essence of nineties sounding Alt Rock and Grunge that appears very early on in the record on the opening tracks of Doomsday Darling and Cloud Colony. These are musical moments that a certain MR WYNDORF would be proud to call his own especially the warped lyrics and sublime cosmic instrumental passages that the band are vastly becoming masters at.

The music can be quite flashy and supremely over the top at times but it’s superbly entertaining to fully experience and when Redwood goes SUPERSONIC in a big way, that’s where the real magic happens with areas of modern Sludge Rock appearing. The soulful melodies that I highlighted in my review for their last EP (Sky Offering) start making an appearance but Redwood always keep their finger on the Stoner Rock/Metal pulse on the excellent third track Escaping Absence. The vocals have a distanced approach and sound to them which allows the spaced out melodies to dominate the creative landscape. 

Redwood start to show their love and appreciation with Classic Hard Rock as there’s a ton of epic guitar solos and musical passages being played throughout the album which once more could be considered EXCESSIVE in places but it’s one of the main strengths of the album. As Redwood never once play things safe with their music which only becomes louder, heavier and leaning heavily into the Space Rock and Stoner Metal vortex on tracks Caravan, Europa and Riders Of Ton 618. The mood and lyrics are brilliantly fantastical but with a gritty sense of realism that highlights the Desert Rock energy and influence of Redwood’s music.

The long drawn out soundscapes blend Progressive Stoner Metal heaviness and world building mysticism into the mix with Caravan and Riders Of Ton 618 being some of my favourite moments of the whole album. These tracks will appeal to long-time fans of Monster Magnet and Howling Giant the most but still allow Redwood to create their own musical legacy with a masterful blend of storytelling and vocal harmonies being shown.

Redwood have also reworked the classic MC5 track Kick Out The Jams with the superb seventh track Into The Sun. The song is quite different to the original but also eerie and familiar at the same time. The track is perhaps the most “GARAGE ROCK” offering of the whole album but with Redwood injecting their COSMIC DOOM surroundings into the mix.

The final track of Ceres is Redwood’s most daring and adventurous track yet with areas of Ambient Rock, Post-Rock and Shoegaze setting up the scene for their trademark SOULFUL strands of Doom/Stoner Metal to fully appear out of nowhere. The song does take time to bring everything together but once Redwood have that creative DNA solved, then be prepared for a highly majestic style of Psychedelic Instrumental energy that ends the album in the most perfect and outstanding way possible.

Redwood have delivered the goods yet again with Cloud Colony and this could allow the band to achieve bigger and better things within the whole scene. This is an EPIC album in every sense of the word!!!

Review

Sky Offering is the new EP from Psych/Doom/Desert/Stoner Rockers Redwood and follows their superb 2024 EP - Dry Rivers. The record has a slightly haggard Doom Rock approach which allows their flavour of Desert Rock to be quite subdued but with a more aggressive sound which lays on the gloomy FUZZ mighty thick within the exquisite opening title track. 

Sky Offering is helped along by different levels of swirling Cosmic Rock which is quite vivid and superbly melodic with a slight Prog Rock attitude appearing that is perhaps influenced by the likes of ELDER and KING BUFFALO yet again. The vocals are perfectly suited to the music with Redwood playing to their main strengths which encompasses a more Post-Doom and Post-Stoner attitude which is delivered right throughout the whole EP.

The next two tracks of The Green and Hills offer the heaviest, fuzziest and spaced out grooves on the EP with matching Ambient sounds harking a new area of Space Rock for Redwood to play with. The music is powered by classic Desert/Fuzz Rock instrumental passages that are quite similar to the likes of FU MANCHU, KYUSS and TRUCKFIGHTERS.

However, Redwood blaze their own highly original blend of Stoner Rock magic specially on the standout track of Hills. The track is quite long and sees Redwood once again embrace a heavier and tighter Progressive based sound where the music becomes JAM based which leads into heavier riffs with a sense of Psychedelic LUST moving in the background.

The final two tracks of Friend Or Foe and Hollow allows Redwood to settle back into a classic style of Doom/Stoner Rock with waves of Space Rock and the sandy Psychedelic dunes of the Desert Rock landscape to inject a lysergic feeling into the mix. This part of the EP is perhaps the more straightforward with catchy grooves and lyrical themes but Redwood still finds the time to bring that COSMIC DOOM swagger until the dying seconds of the EP.

Sky Offering is a soulful and brilliant slice of Cosmic Doom/Stoner Rock that will take you into the far reaches of the WEEDIAN MULTIVERSE.

Review

Californian Psychedelic Desert/Stoner Rockers Redwood new EP Dry Rivers launches into the Cosmic Rock stratosphere with the band travelling along the same Space Rock Highway of bands such as King Buffalo, ELDER, KYUSS, Howling Giant and Truckfighters with a neverending style of Classic sounding FUZZ powering the Psychedelic heaviness that appears within the whole EP.

Dry Rivers contains four tracks running around twenty two minutes in length with Redwood merging Classic Desert/Stoner Rock techniques with the modern Cosmic Doom and Progressive Psychedelic passages. There’s a seedy underbelly of distorted Fuzz sounds that has a slight Ambient flavour which comes off strongly within the excellent opening track of Modern Way.

Redwood have a keen sense of melody and free-flowing heavy doomed out grooves which allows the band to play exquisite long drawn out instrumental jams which sees the band add different waves of Space Rock textures that do have a certain Post-Stoner influence to them. The vocals are superb that have a dreamlike essence to them whilst keeping that classic Fuzz Rock or Hard Rock element throughout.

Dry Rivers also allows Redwood the perfect creative opportunity to adapt their music to a Punk Rock environment which is heard mostly within the fantastic production values that keeps the whole EP remarkably grounded despite the ongoing ventures into Outer Space. The EP does become more Post-Doom obsessed on the outlandish third track Home which sees Redwood offer a more aggressive style of music that translates into some of the freshest and heaviest sounds on the whole EP.

The final track Void Rider is perhaps the perfect way to end the EP with. As Redwood channels the EP’s earlier Progressive sound with the EP becoming quite cinematic with melodic and grizzled instrumental jams becoming the main focus for the band to impress listeners with. The vocals once again bang on point that sells the whole creative journey to the listener that Redwood will take you upon.

Dry Rivers is a thrilling spectacle of Psychedelic Stoner Rock that is helped by catchy bursts of Desert Rock, Fuzz Rock, Cosmic Rock and Spaced Out Doom that remains quite addictive with a wonderfully aggressive sound from start to finish.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
