Review

Brotheranza is the next release from Instrumental Psych/Stoner Rockers Muffasonic who showed huge potential for epic jams on their excellent debut album ZEROH released back in July 2024. The album showcased Muffasonic’s style of classic sounding Desert Rock based landscapes that’s levelled up by a heavy amount of Fuzz and Stoner Metal. Muffasonic doesn't change that winning formula much with this release but there is a sense of gritty heaviness that emerges within the superb opening track of Komadrone.

The sound is quite cinematic in its approach with influences such as Karma To Burn and Yawning Man appearing at times but the presence of a heavier Post-Doom attitude takes charge with the long drawn out distorted melodies that appear at the end of the track. This style of music takes centre stage for the next two tracks of Phantoxication and Bruddharoids which elevates the record into a Sludge Rock environment.

The instrumental playing is excellent with Muffasonic playing a classic Power-Trio formation where everything is played on point. There’s a sense of Hard Rock determination which reminds me of classic KARMA TO BURN more and more.

With an ever increasing reliance on FUZZ, REVERB and DISTORTED FEEDBACK for the final two tracks of Musoman and Bovidha leading upto the heaviest sounds on the EP that is perhaps the standout parts on the EP especially on the epic final track of Bovindha. Muffasonic demonstrates a wealth of huge talent with their music that leaves you wanting to hear more.

Brotheranza is the type of EP that merges old-school Instrumental Stoner Rock grooves and modern day Psych Metal to great effect that makes this such a great record from start to finish.

Review

Cosmic Mother is the debut album from Giant Haze where they play a richly observed style of modern day Stoner Rock/Metal which also has elements of Grunge, Doom, Sludge, Psych and Fuzz bound into its heavy creative outlook. The sound has a distinctive Garage Rock energy with Giant Haze moving from the Proto-Metal energy of the Seventies to the aggressive Grunge/Stoner Rock attitude of the Nineties but still being thoroughly modern at the same time.

The music feels inspired by the likes of Soundgarden, KYUSS, FU MANCHU and Monster Magnet for the most part but with a sublime Punk Rock attitude allows Giant Haze to stand on their own creative merits. The record has a subtle raw sounding quality thanks to the wicked production values contained throughout. Giant Haze have an aggressive and outlandish approach with their music especially with the excellent vocals from Christoph Wollmann who feels like he’s channelling David Johannson, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop and Dave Wyndorf with his vocal delivery on the album.

The stripped back Psych/Space Rock melodies are always bang on point with Giant Haze blazing their way through a collection of sublime tracks on the record such as geographic gardens suck, king of tomorrow, sunrise, sundance and from another world that allows Cosmic Mother to be quite an exciting, exhilarating and highly aggressive ride within the first half of the album. Giant Haze focus mostly on the Space Rock and Fuzz Rock side of their music which allows the heaviest and seediest instrumental passages to be quite refreshing and highly unapologetic at the same time.

There are some unexpected harsh growls along the way which brings a welcome Grunge/Sludge atmosphere to the party that allows Christian “Andi” Andersen on Bass, Peter “Pete” Stoeckicht on Guitars and Timo Ahlers on Drums to shine through and through with music that has a timeless quality to it all. Christoph gets all the time he needs to deliver a masterclass of over the top Spaced Out vocals that we don’t experience enough these days.

The one thing I admire the most from Giant Haze is their fearless creative attitude which becomes more apparent throughout the second half of the album. The grooves, melodies, spaced out passages and vocals become more over the top and less grounded on tracks such as panic to ride, crank in public, 1000 tons of stone and a smile for the dead with Giant Haze impressing even further where the music leaves you wanting to hear more.

Cosmic Mother is a superbly entertaining record with Giant Haze playing a wealth of different STONER based grooves that will have you rocking out in no time at all!!!

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

The Turning is the eagerly awaited fourth album from Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers BASK which sees the band return after a six year absence with new material. This has been well worth the wait with BASK generating their own style of Progressive leaning Stoner Rock sound that sees their trademark use of Country, Americana, Space Rock and Blues Rock based harmonies being given a heavier Sludge Rock/Metal makeover influenced by the likes of MASTODON and BARONESS.

There’s also a chilling sense of Post-Doom and Post-Metal melodies that develops within the more abrasive and violent sounds that sees BASK venture out for the very first time in some places. Though, the classic early Americana themes that made BASK such a force to be reckoned with are never too far behind. Throw in a subtle mix of Prog Rock, Folk Rock and Cosmic Rock grooves which allows The Turning to be very hard to categorize and define at times.

This is also one of the albums and possibly BASK’s greatest strengths as you’re not sure what to expect with each passing song. Did you ever wonder what Heavy Spaced Out Doom would sound like when merged with Country, Southern Rock and Americana passages. Well, the answer is perfectly captured here on superbly constructed and brilliantly played tracks such as In The Heat Of The Dying Sun, The Traveler, Dig My Heels and Unwound being some of the best material that BASK have written to date.

Their music is constantly evolving but still showing a thrilling and adventurous creative attitude with BASK not afraid to add even more elements of music such as Post-Rock, Ambient Melodies and Shoegaze which is brought to life with their epic use of different instruments throughout the album. The record can be quite ROOTS based with the “TWANGY” instrumental movements but it’s kept within the areas of Sludge/Stoner Metal with BASK never afraid to experiment at the most crucial moment which transfers this record into MONOLITHIC and INTERDIMENSIONAL SPACE GOAT territory.

With a range of diverse influences such as Mastodon, Baroness, Elder, Hawkwind, All Them Witches and King Buffalo with BASK even forging and creating their unique style of Heavy Psychedelic music of the highest order. What also makes them stand out is how the band brings a classic EVERYMAN level of storytelling into their cinematic adventure. The lyrics are quite hopeful and brilliantly insightful even when the music takes a daring and apocalyptic turn.

The Turning is an emotionally charged record of the highest order with BASK firmly establishing themselves as one of the most unique and original voices within the modern day Psych Stoner Rock/Metal scene. This is a record of REAL QUALITY and can easily be considered one of the best Psychedelic Rock albums of the year.

Review

Adrift is the latest EP from Psych/Doom/Stoner Rockers Florist which shows the band have a deep and meaningful spiritual side showing within this record. Offset this with a daring Cosmic drift and passages of classic Desert Rock energy then Florist creates a sublime take on the Space Rock sound. The record does take time for the massive sounds to appear with Florist creating and playing subversive Trippy Eastern melodies played against a sudden shift into Sludge Rock dynamics within the excellent instrumental opening track of 432Hz.

The track is mostly Ambient based but the final outburst of heavy Post-Doom passages superbly leads the EP into the next exciting chapter that Florist carefully constructs with echoes of bands such as Domkraft, King Buffalo, ELDER and HOWLING GIANT. Second track Another Moon captures similar sounds of those great bands with Florist adding a definitive gritty Hard Rock edge with the killer STADIUM ROCK based vocals telling a focused and quality based narrative being shown within the lyrics. The added trippy sound effects told through the use of multiple different instruments is one of the main highlights here.

Florist continue with their superbly entertaining, thrilling and down-right heavy musical adventure with Psych Rock soundscapes being created further with that focused Cosmic/Space Rock score that allows the record to become more aggressive and melodic developing on tracks such as Out Of Space, Grow and the stunning two part track of Adrift (Part A) and Adrift (Part B).

The final two tracks for Adrift (Part A) and Adrift (Part B) are easily the standout tracks and most technically accomplished of all the tracks contained here. As they have a cool Progressive theme appearing at the best possible moment which allows Florist to develop a more daring and deeply engaging sound with the heaviest parts appearing here. Though, the fifth track Grow isn’t too far behind either with Florist playing a seedy, murky and fuzz-heavy sound that shows a deep reliance of AMPLIFIER and RIFF DISTORTION feedback that is superbly matched against the far out COSMIC energy that shows Florist are highly confident at.

Adrift is another great slice of modern day Psych Stoner Rock/Metal with flashes of Sludge, Doom, Prog and that SPACE ROCK goodness that leaves you wanting more.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Exclusive Premiere Of Doom/Grunge/Stoner Rockers FISH HOOK SMILE New Song/Video For RATSTAR

"Ratstar”, the second single from Fish Hook Smile’s upcoming self-titled album, out August 20th via Glory or Death Records

On August 20, Fish Hook Smile returns with their second single, “Ratstar” - a track that refuses to look away from one of the harshest realities of our time: the humanitarian crisis of homelessness.

The single is part of the band’s forthcoming self-titled album, due out on September 5.

“‘Ratstar’ dives into the merciless world of homelessness, told through the eyes of someone society chooses not to see. It's a visceral cry for recognition and connection — a reminder that all of us are only one or two strokes of bad luck away from living the same fate.” - Fish Hook Smile

Built on suffocating atmosphere and unflinching lyrics, “Ratstar” captures the weight of marginalization — the empty pockets, the systemic neglect, the fight to maintain dignity. Sonically, the track delivers sharp distortion, a throbbing low end, and vocals that shift between anguish and restrained fury.

The track paints a bleak, brutally honest portrait of homelessness, told from the eyes of someone long ignored by society. With gritty textures and lyrics that ache with lived experience, “Ratstar” demands empathy - and warns how fragile the line is between stability and collapse.

This is not just a political message. It’s a deeply human one - one that demands to be heard.

Fish Hook Smile emerged from the vibrant alternative scene of St. Louis in the 1990s, blending influences from grunge, punk, and alternative rock with raw, biting lyricism. Known locally for their intense live shows and visceral sound, the band gained underground momentum before dissolving, without ever releasing a full-length record.

Fish Hook Smile was a St. Louis band that was originally formed in 1991 by Jason Busiek, Dan Policarpo(guitar) and Ken McCray(drums). In the Summer of 1991, Misha Avrushenko, Matt Lake and Bryan Pollard joined the band. Although he wasn't originally in the band, Matt Pekny was at damn near every practice and show in the 90’s and was a natural fit for 2nd guitar. These songs were written by Jason Busiek, Matt Lake, Misha Avrushenko, Bryan Pollard and Dan Policarpo. Although Dan is not on the recording, he was a major player in the formation, writing and the overall honing of this sound and we are forever grateful for his contributions

Decades later, members of the original lineup reunited, unearthing unreleased material and channeling the same urgency that defined their early years. Now spread across different cities but still driven by a shared creative fire, Fish Hook Smile returns with renewed purpose and sharpened vision.

This year, 2025, they joined forces with Glory or Death Records to release their long-awaited self-titled debut album digitally. Slated for release on September 5, the record is preceded by two blistering singles: “Shiver” and “Ratstar” - with lyrical manifestos confronting authoritarianism and the brutal realities of social invisibility.

Fish Hook Smile is not just a comeback. It’s a scream that never died.

Valley of the Sun

Inspired by the total solar eclipse which took place on day 1 of recording (April 8, 2024), Quintessence marks a return to the three-piece format for Valley of the Sun. With massive, sub-octave guitars, thundering bass, and a backbone of rock-solid drumming, the album is a bit of a departure from previous efforts, but long-time fans of the band will still find all the riffs, melodies, and soaring vocals that they've come to expect from VOTS over its previous four LP's.

Review

Blackhole is the debut full length album from HÖG a band who specialise in Sleazy, Grimy and an aggressive Street Level style of Doom/Stoner Rock. The added use of Proto-Metal, Punk Rock and Heavy Rock attitudes all lends itself with HÖG being more obsessed with the formative years of Seventies Heavy Metal than today’s more streamlined sound. Though,HÖG do immerse themselves with modern day Psychedelic and Fuzz Rock surroundings from time-to-time.

If you like bands such as Motorhead, Saint Vitus, Black Sabbath, Budgie and Blue Cheer then HÖG are sure to impress with their hybrid style of grimy HEAVY RAWK & ROLL. The attitude is pitched at the right level with the elements of Proto-Doom and Garage Rock being played at the right level on tracks such as Don’t Need You, Life too Late and Blackhole. The vocals from Daniel vary from grizzled Doom Rock/Metal to a more free flowing Blues Rock energy to add extra SPICE to the record.

HÖG play a high amount of screeching moments on this record which could easily be considered as Speed Metal in places with a frenzied Punk Rock atmosphere allowing some classic musical shredding appearing from the whole band. Daniel’s guitars dominate the seedy landscape with Adam’s drums and Bobcat’s bass adding a whole level of destructive HEAVY METAL tone which becomes heavier and faster with each passing track.

I can see why RidingEasy Records signed HÖG to their impressive roster. As HÖG play like their lives depended on it and stick with that classic Seventies Proto-Metal/Doom Rock formula which has allowed RidingEasy Records to continuously release great records over the years. HÖG do become more driven by a classic HEAVY METAL sound that drifts between the Seventies and Eighties scene with great appetite on tracks such as Bring You Down, City Witch and Free containing some of my favourite moments with the music being superbly heavy and a super fresh creative approach.

There are some sublime “quieter” Classic Rock moments that allows HÖG the perfect chance to bask within their low-key melodies and prove they have a great ear for subtle Blues Rock passages which allows each band member to fully shine through with superb musicianship of the highest order to the closing stages of the record.

Blackhole also sees an OCCULT ROCK vibe appearing on City Witch that feels full on MOTORHEAD going down the OCCULT DOOM route with its stripped back production values that makes it worth the album purchase alone.

HÖG’s debut album is a mighty collection of great tracks that’s primed for sheer entertainment. The record is not the most original sound but what HÖG do so well is to inject their own personality into their music which leaves a lasting impression with its PISSED OFF attitude that will have you coming back time and time again.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

GODZILLA WAS TOO DRUNK TO DESTROY TOKYO Unleash New Single & Video “Sasquatch’s Eyes” + Announce Upcoming Album

GODZILLA WAS TOO DRUNK TO DESTROY TOKYO Unleash New Single & Video “Sasquatch’s Eyes” + Announce Upcoming Album Sideral Voivod and Canadian Tour. The new album is out September 19, 2025 on Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records (CD, Colored LP, Digital).

Brace yourselves for a fuzz-fueled cosmic rampage, Italian heavy fuzzers Godzilla Was Too Drunk To Destroy Tokyo have just released their brand-new single and official video “Sasquatch’s Eyes”, offering a mind-melting preview of their forthcoming album Sideral Voivod, set for release September 19, 2025 via Octopus Rising / Argonauta Records. Available on CD, limited edition colored vinyl and digital formats, the album promises a kaleidoscopic collision of stoner grooves, acid-drenched riffs and chaotic sci-fi storytelling.

“Sasquatch’s Eyes” is a wild, groove-heavy trip into the band’s trademark blend of 60s acid rock textures, monolithic fuzz and offbeat rhythmic breakdowns. Laced with hypnotic hooks and otherworldly swagger, the track embodies the raw, untamed energy that has made Godzilla Was Too Drunk To Destroy Tokyo one of the most unique acts in the European underground scene.

The band shares:

“‘Sasquatch’s Eyes’ is pure primal vision, a soundtrack for those who’ve stared into the wilderness and felt it staring back. Expect our usual mix of gorilla bass tones, prophetic choruses, and riffs straight from another galaxy, with a touch of paranoia for good measure.”

Formed in 2022 in the small Ligurian village of Calice Ligure, the band is fronted by Sara de Luca (bass destroyer and sonic instigator known as The Evil Lord), alongside Nicola Viola (the octopus-armed drum wizard) and Alessandro “Camu” Camurati (riff-crafting guitar builder). The trio has already taken their high-voltage live assault across Europe and Japan, leaving a wake of crushed stages and blown minds.

Following the buzz around their 2023 releases Atomic Spitfire and Evil Lord, Sideral Voivod pushes their sound even further into interstellar chaos, a hallucinatory ride through doom, psych, sludge and space rock. Fans of L7, Melvins, and The Stooges will feel right at home in Godzilla’s sonic mayhem.
