Review

Gehenna is the debut album from Doom/Shoegaze/Stoner Metallers Fjords who I originally featured back in April 2020 when I reviewed their debut self-titled EP. That release showcased what a dangerous style of Doom, Stoner, Fuzz and Prog  music the band created within an entirely Drum and Bass duo structure. Fjords continues with that wicked setup but applies a Shoegaze and Noise Rock element to their music with the band delivering a sublime Doomgaze energy into their music.

Things do get extremely chaotic and superbly weird with Fjords adding electronic beats, glitchy noises and certain “computer game” based sound effects which aligns the band more closely to the likes of Genghis Tron in places. The album opens with the fairly straightforward Virgilio which has a standard Punk Rock/Noise Rock which allows Fjords to set the musical groundwork and framework for the album. There is a sullen sludgy delivery which keeps within the bands “LESS IS MORE” delivery with a certain KOWLOON WALLED CITY influence being heard for the first time.

Second track Inferno is perhaps where the real fun and damage starts with Fjords starting to explore their “real” Doomgaze and Progressive themes with those different sound effects and electronic beats I mentioned previously. FJords have more time to play with here as the track runs for almost fourteen minutes and it’s an epic style of different musical genres all vying for complete creative control. There’s still a great sense of warped melody bursting throughout the seams of Doom, Noise, Industrial. Electronica, Sludge and Progressive movements. The vocals are way out of control and more settled for a Punk Rock and Noise Rock environment but they get the job done. Inferno is delightfully crazy but somehow it brilliantly works for a surreal style of musical entertainment.

The final two tracks of Purgartario and Paradiso offer over sixteen minutes which sees Fjords once again experimenting with their sound that remains highly original and wonderfully unpredictable but still delivers wave after wave of riff-driven instrumental rock/metal. The nightmarish and vivid creative aspect is another highlight with Fjords unlocking unsettling DOOMED OUT and INDUSTRIAL grooves which have a certain “twisted” identity to them but the band always find a way of delivering intense music that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Gehenna is a complex and highly vivid album that is probably meant for a cult and niche audience within the underground scene. The album is best described having a non-linear structure with Fjords going into multiple different directions with each passing moment but that’s what makes the album truly work and fully stand out.

Fjords dare to be different and release an album that needs your full undivided attention. This won’t be for everyone but if you have the time and willpower then Gehenna can only be described as a highly original and fucked-up musical experience of the highest order.

Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers Indica Blues return after a five year absence with their new album Universal Heat Death and they’ve gone under a major transformation with their music. As they play a darker, heavier and progressive style of music compared to their previous records. There’s a more moodier atmosphere which draws a stunning SLEEP and HOWLING GIANT energy to their music. Last time round they were more closely associated with the likes of FU MANCHU and KYUSS which is still intact here but Indica Blues are quite adept at drawing up sonic passages fuelled by Sludge, Grunge and Post-Doom aggression which you can feel very early on within the opening tracks of Universal Heat Death and The Raven.

The music has a certain DOOM & GLOOM energy with a bleak stripped down atmosphere being played against Tom Pilsworth vocals. The band are joined by a new guitarist Lewis Batten for this release and he brings a different style of music on this record with a sullen and moody performance which adds to the nightmarish Blues Rock sound that cautiously develops on tracks such as Bloodsands Pt 1 and The Slow Descents Into Hell. With a gloomy message being contained within the whole album it’s good to hear Indica Blues developing a thrilling and distorted style of Heavy Psych and Post-Stoner energy which gives another level of heaviness to the record.

It can be wickedly dark and quite deceiving with the deft touches of Cinematic Rock appearing which transforms into a classic aura of Desert Rock, Fuzz and Stoner Metal with the excellent rhythm section of Rich Walker (Drums) and Andrew Haines-Villalta (Bass) once again combining forces for a wholly destructive mission.

The shift to Post-Metal dynamics was another great surprise with Indica Blues that reminded me of heavier artists in places but one that doesn't sacrifice their STONED OUT identity. However, when you have a record touching upon themes of war and revenge which perfectly matches the FUCKED UP feeling currently going on in the world then you can expect moments of darkness from time-to-time.

The final two tracks of Bloodsands Pt II and So Low is where the most hard-hitting, heaviest and socially aware messages appear with Indica Blues leaning heavily into the Post-Whatever environment the record beautifully contains with extended landscapes and trippy soundscapes you can’t but help lose yourself in.

Indica Blues have transformed into real storytellers with Universal Heat Death with the album offering a record with a cautionary musical vision whilst delivering some epic Doomed Out Stoner Metal grooves of the highest order. This is a sublime and superbly produced album throughout that’s topped off by a first rate musical performance from everyone involved.

Review

Soundquarium: Live Session is the new live album from Polish Doom/Stoner Metallers Weedow that was captured from a live session on 20th September 2025. The music is played out through a slower style of Doom, Psych, Stoner Metal and Space Rock where the music is always constantly evolving into a different energy compared to their 2024 debut album. This performance contains two tracks (Delusion and Threnody) from that album with the final track Liquid Sand perhaps being a new or unreleased track.

The performance has a sense of intimacy which you can watch on YouTube right now and this adds to the Spaced Out surroundings of Weedow’s music. The music becomes slightly cautious with the sludgy movements offering a wicked level of distorted and amplifier heaviness especially within the tracks of Delusion and Threnody. Weedow operate mostly within the “LOW & SLOW” environment but they do transfer over to a faster style of Spaced Out Doom with familiar sounds from the infamous Polish underground music scene appearing along the way.

Weedow has a great way of blending Space Rock and Ambient themes that adds a contemporary soundtrack feel to their music. As I stated before the music can be quite cautious to begin with but Weedow always finds that magical creative spark to move solely into the right Psychedelic direction with some epic cinematic grooves dominating the musical landscape within Threnody and Liquid Sand.

There’s a haunting Post-Rock and Doomgaze style that superbly develops within the quieter moments that allows Weedow to be more reflective and emotionally engaging with their music. This live album is one that allows the listener to be part of the whole journey and ultimately reward them with a highly captivating style of music that should hopefully allow Weedow establish themselves even further within the global underground scene.

Review

Post-Rock/Shoegaze collective Blanket offer their fourth full length album with True Blue and it sees the highly talented band with their most honest, raw and emotionally charged record yet. There are still moments of Post-Metal, Doomgaze, Grunge, Psych and Alt Rock melodies which have been used to superb effect on their previous excellent albums of Ceremonia and Modern Escapism. This time round, Blanket feel more retrospective and willing to let their Post-Rock and Shoegaze aspect of their music to be the deciding creative factor of how the album ultimately sounds.

With the heavy instrumental sounds being closer to the likes of HUM, NOTHING, SLOWDIVE, HUM and SLOW CRUSH this doesn’t stop the band creating their own highly original dreamlike soundscapes of their own within the excellent batch of opening tracks of The Swallows Reflecting In The Water, Hole In My Head and Levitate. The guitars from Bobby Pook and Simon Morgan consist of a Grunge / Shoegaze dynamic with Ash Betton On Bass and Lucas Fletcher on Drums providing a more cerebral and progressive rhythm section for the melodies to become quite heavy along the way.

The lyrics are beautifully poetic and simply magical that offer a sense of realism and uplifting melodies which comes from the classic era of the Shoegaze scene most notably the eighties and nineties scene. There’s a cool level of psychedelic distortion being used along the way which lets a more gloomy atmosphere slowly make itself known with Blanket still keeping close to their Post-Rock and Shoegaze roots. The music can be furiously fast-paced with a soulful Post-Metal energy emitting from those intense guitars throughout the album.

Blanket does experiment with ambient sounds, samples and trippy soundtrack effects within the more reflective parts of the album. This allows True Blue to feel highly inspired by the Post-Punk scene with its experimental approach whilst still remaining within the core creative themes on tracks such as Bind, Summer Skin and Wallflower.

The album does feature contributions from Australian Alt Rock/Indie Rockers Wayside on Bind and Lynsey Ward (Exploring Birdsong) on Summer Skin. These two tracks feature the most interesting vocal arrangements and musical delivery on the whole record. As this allows Blanket to transform their musical perspective to allow these guest artists to fully thrive in a slightly different musical environment.

The final two tracks of Wallflower and True Blue sees Blanket undergo a minor Progressive Rock transformation with longer time frames to work upon. The music evolves into a heavier and more emotionally engaging style of Post-Metal and Post-Doom landscapes which is perhaps my favourite part of the entire record. There’s more precise aggression within their music but the superb vocals from Bobby Pook keep things real and grounded.

True Blue is a refreshingly real, honest and beautifully played album that allows Blanket to offer their most grown up, mature and gritty record to date. Blanket are going from strength to strength which seems them vastly becoming one of the best Post-Rock/Shoegaze bands the UK scene currently has to offer right now.

Episode 1 - Tracklisting

1.Continue The Sad 03:57

2.Steve French 04:26

3.Finding A Cure 04:44

Kurt Williams - guitar/ vocals

Nat Reid - bass/ vocals

Tom LaHatte - drums

Review

Episode 1 is the debut EP from Libbianski who fuse Doom, Shoegaze, Post-Metal and Alt Metal that has a solid Doom-Pop foundation with the band playing similar sounds to bands such as TORCHE, HUM and Slow Crush. The record has quite an aggressive and vivid energy which I didn’t fully expect which comes out in full force within the excellent opening track of Continue The Sad. The harsh vocals from Kurt Williams (Guitar) are quite different from Nat Reid’s (Bass)  sublime Alt Metal and Punk Rock delivery.

The music moves from catchy Doom-Pop hooks to a gloriously delicious Post-Metal energy with a sludgy attitude forming throughout. Add a subtle Grunge and Noise Rock attitude which allows Libbianski to dominate the Doomgaze landscape. The lyrics are quite insightful but with a rebellious presence to them. That style of music continues within the outstanding second track Steve French which captures a slightly downbeat Nineties sounding melody with outbursts of Sludge Punk surroundings with the band following closely to their gloomy Pop hooks.

Libbianski are from Wellington, New Zealand which once again shows a different style of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal band to emerge from there with the likes of BEASTWARS, ULCERATE, Planet Of The Dead and Sidewinder impressing me over the years. Libbianski play their own great style of distorted sounds which takes a more warm hearted and disjointed approach within the final track Finding A Cure with Kurt’s and Nat’s vocals once again offering different styles and musical perspective. Tom LaHatte puts in a wonderfully understated performance on drums which makes everything tick throughout the whole EP.

Episode 1 is a superbly heavy, quirky and extremely delightful record with Libbianski offering a different style of Shoegaze that’s brimming with wonderful creativity.

Review

Delete To Proceed is the debut full length album of instrumental Post-Metal collective TARMAK who take a cerebral and cinematic approach with their music. As the band a contemporary storytelling theme into the music with areas of Science Fiction combining grounded Post-Rock themes and subtle sound effects which is ultimately quite a thought provoking and progressive sounding record.

TARMAK never play by the rules with a highly intelligent delivery forming throughout every individual track that could be dominated by Post-Metal grooves one moment and the next it’s being dictated by Ambient Post-Rock melodies. Whichever creative turn TARMAK takes, the end result is a complex dark vision with the band successfully avoiding the negative pitfalls of releasing an album such as this. The record does a great job of focusing on a stylish atmospheric narrative which fully sells the overall tension of the album especially within the opening tracks of Delete To Proceed and Careless CRISPR.

TARMAK are perhaps more closely aligned to the likes of RUSSIAN CIRCLES, MOGWAI, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU and MONO instead of the heavier sludgy sounds of PELICAN. TARMAK create songs with a strong Post-Rock energy before slowly transforming into a powerful Post-Metal entity of their own making. There’s a lot more Progressive experimentation which becomes one of the main creative focus for the band on tracks such as Careless CRISPR,  Ark Of Nowhere, Gene Roulette and Blue Renewed.

Though, the best way to approach this album is to see it as one extended instrumental song broken down into individual chapters telling the next exciting parts of the story. As some times TARMAK branches out into areas of Drone, Doom, Stoner Rock and Shoegaze along the way with some intriguing chants being added on the later stages of the record.

Delete To Proceed is a highly involving and deeply emotional album that offers HUGE rewards if you last the soulful and gloomy journey. The technical abilities of Sander, Geert and Simon are simply superb as they put their hearts and soul into this record. The mood can be quite abstract along the way but it moves the album such a brooding and emotionally charged edge when TARMAK experiment with their music by adopting elements you would least expect.

TARMAK are another exciting and highly original Instrumental Rock/Metal band from the Belgian underground scene following the likes of MODDER in delivering their own unique take on the Post-Rock/Post-Metal sound.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Cold in Berlin. London based Post-Metal / Doom /Cold Wave band releases second single 'The Stranger'.

Fifth album Wounds – their most eclectic and ambitious work to date - released 7th November (New Heavy Sounds)

Wounds is Cold in Berlin's long-awaited and recently announced fifth album - their first in six years. As heavy as it is haunting, the record masterfully blends doom, post-punk, and driving krautrock in a dynamic, hypnotic maelstrom – pushing London’s most exciting cult band into intoxicating new territory.

“Wounds is a series of songs about the different ways people live with and process ‘the wounds’ of their lives,” explains vocalist Maya. “A strange celebration of that formative pain we have all experienced in some way. The loss and joy of survival – the celebration of finding others like us, the gift of knowing life comes after fire.”

New single 'The Stranger' is a song that is meant to allow for multiple interpretations. Vocalist Maya adds:

"Perhaps it is a song about addiction- the wound that doesn’t heal. The way the focus of an addiction sings to you, searching you out, twisting and flowing through the body- whispering beneath the skin until you answer the call and find home once more.

Perhaps it is a song about finding your place in the world- groups of people watching and experiencing something meaningful together- a way to heal and close old wounds. How live music can stay with you even as you are separated from it. How finding the strange songs, sang in dark places can actually bring you home to yourself.

Or perhaps it is a song about that sharp kind of love at first sight that can overwhelm, offering freedom and constraint all at once. When you are drawn to that person that you know can destroy you, but you cease to matter because they are somehow instantly your home and only resting place.

‘The Stranger’ can be all these things- a healer, a cage, an addiction, but it is most definitely a call into the darkness, reaching out to the listener to join us in the howl of life, to wake up the bones and the skin. Be with us in the noise and know that whatever it is that led you to us, we are grateful you are home.”

Wounds was recorded by Mike Bew, on location at Foel Studio. The band could be found working deep into the witching hours, experimenting with new sounds and filling the valleys with cantankerous wails of sound, bursting from amps borrowed from My Bloody Valentine.

"The Welsh countryside has a mystical quality to it," says guitarist Adam. "We recorded in a deep, dark valley; misty days and shooting stars at night. You could wander through nearby woods and stone circles during breaks. Foel Studios is woven into this setting with a transcendence of its own – its storied history includes sessions by Electric Wizard, Hawkwind and The Fall."

Synths on the album are arranged by Berlin-based Bow Church, an influential figure in the dark electronic scene and a long time collaborator of the band. His work weaves icy and atmospheric textures into the songs, layering complexity that demands repeat listens. The horns on 12 Crosses were recorded by a high profile jazz musician who appears anonymously due to label ties.

While meticulously crafted, Wounds captures the visceral energy of Cold In Berlin’s renowned live shows. The album’s arrangements and raucous sound remain true to the unrelenting intensity and atmosphere of their stage performances – every track retains the sweat, urgency, and immediacy of a band performing in the moment.

Wounds is the band’s first studio album since 2019’s Rituals Of Surrender, which Narc Magazine praised for its “crushing doom-laden riffs that assaulted the speakers with a steady pulse of noise”. It follows the 2024 EP The Body is The Wound, described by Metal Epidemic as featuring “hooky melodic songs” with a “swelling heavy intensity”.

Featuring free-jazz brass sections, off-beat structures, techno rhythms, and soaring synths, Wounds is the band's most ambitious release yet.
About the band

Born in East London in 2010, Cold in Berlin quickly graduated from the local scene’s fleeting gothic revival into one of the UK underground’s most revered live acts. Fronted by the commanding and fierce vocal performances of Maya, the band forges dark post-punk, doom, and krautrock into a singular sonic force — equal parts raw power and bleak beauty, as heavy as it is haunting.

Their debut album, Give Me Walls (2010), was named an Album of the Year by Artrocker magazine, announcing Cold in Berlin as a vital new voice in alternative music. Signing with Candlelight Records (Universal), the band released And Yet (2012) and The Comfort of Loss and Dust (2015), pushing their earlier post-punk sound into darker, heavier territory, with major UK airplay (BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music) and acclaim from Metal Hammer, Mojo, and Q.

By the time of 2019’s Rituals of Surrender (New Heavy Sounds), their transformation from punky noiseniks to post-metal powerhouse was complete. Nearly a decade on from their formation, the band was immortalised in the British Library’s Sound Archive, following their inclusion in its major exhibition Terror and Wonder: The Gothic Imagination.

After a period in the shadows during the global pause, Cold in Berlin re-emerged in 2024 with The Body is the Wound EP. Incorporating mechanical, factory-floor rhythms and icy string machines into their wall of noise, it was cited by critics as the band’s best work to date, establishing a new blueprint for their evolving sound.

With their fifth album, Wounds, Cold in Berlin deliver on the promise of all that came before. Their most ambitious work to date features powerful synths from long-time collaborator Bow Church, free-jazz brass sections, and off-beat structures and time signatures.

Review.

Resolution is the latest offering from Psych/Stoner Rockers Pink Fuzz which is their first album in over seven years though the band did release a superb EP (Vitals) back in 2019. If you’re new to Pink Fuzz’s fast-paced and highly melodic world then you’re in for a treat with the band focusing upon playing sounds inspired by early-era QOTSA, Slomosa, FU MANCHU and Truckfighters. However, Pink Fuzz stand out when they branch out into areas of Doom, Fuzz and classic Shoegaze which injects a world building energy into their music.

The music is catchy and captures the best moments of the Nineties Alt-Rock/Stoner Rock scene especially when the music draws upon the likes of Mazzy Star with a thrilling Doomgaze melody being added throughout the whole album. The sound is quite “FIESTY” and “HEARTFELT” thanks to the excellent vocals from brother/sister duo of LuLu Demitro and John Demitro that perfectly taps into the Shoegaze vibe and the poppy upbeat sounds which become quite aggressive when the subtle Punk Rock / Sludge Rock grooves appear on the early stages of the album.

Resolution works best when Pink Fuzz thinks outside of the box with classic Stoner Rock passages that have a certain highly confident swagger on tracks such as Trigger, Long Gone and Coming For Me perfectly set the scene. There’s a hint of “Post-Doom” developing that merges with that boisterous QOTSA based sound which manages to offer a playful and full on aggressive attitude. The “POPPIER” elements soon transform into a delicious blend of Fuzz Rock with a twinge of Doom Rock suddenly appearing for a more refined “METAL” sound.

You’ll be surprised by the different HEAVY RAWK genres that Pink Fuzz manage to include out of thin air for the freshest, heaviest and hippest sounds on the whole album. Resolution allows Pink Fuzz to play recklessly but in the best possible way that manifests into sublime tracks full of great Psychedelic grooves on tracks such as: No Sympathy, Worst Enemy, Resolution, Am I Happy and Animal.

With excellent production values being applied thanks to great work by Kevin Mckeown on Production Duties and the legendary Alain Johannes who mixed the record. Resolution is one of the unexpected delights I’ve heard from the Stoner Rock scene I’ve heard this year. As Pink Fuzz are brilliantly inventive combining classic Stoner Rock against areas of Shoegaze, Alt Rock and Indie Rock for a record that’s bound to become a firm favourite within the underground scene.
