Review

Psych/Prog/Stoner Rockers Wheel Of Smoke return after a seven year absence by releasing their live album Live At Libertad 2026. The record which was recorded on 05th April 2026 at café libertad in Leuven, Belgium sees the band play a collection of their most well known tracks built up across their excellent discography. If you’re new to Wheel Of Smoke’s world then the band plays a great style of Psych Rock, Space Rock, Prog Rock, Stoner Rock and other stellar sounds from the area of Classic Rock.

This record has a stripped back atmosphere which captures the band perfectly in a raw vibrant “LIVE” setting and you can tell that very minimal work was done in the recording studio / behind the scenes for this album. There are a lot of rough sounding moments captured on this record which only adds to the overall effect as it allows the listener to be part of the action. This is quite an involving and long drawn out album but it’s never boring with Wheel Of Smoke changing their musical style and delivery through various stages of the album.

There’s a sublime “Jam based” energy to Wheel Of Smoke of how they delve into the area of Sixties and Seventies Psych Rock then adding levels of modern Stoner Rock heaviness when you least expect this. The majority of the tracks are powered by an expressive style of Instrumental Rock with influences such as Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Earthless and The Doors can be heard for the best sounding moments on the album.

Wheel Of Smoke are quite hard to describe as they have a "chameleon" approach to their music with some wonderful Spaced Out And Ambient effects emitting from the vastness of the actual venue itself. The music can be quite “Jazzy” and “Experimental” in places which allows the grounded Progressive and Post-Rock elements to hold everything together on tracks such as: Degeneration, Beamed, On A Wave, Sun Go Down, The Pilgrim and Song Of Saturn.

Live At Libertad 2026 is quite an involving album with Wheel Of Smoke delivering a highly engaging seventy five minute live album where there’s plenty of fantastic instrumental solos to lose yourself in. Wheel Of Smoke fully commit themselves to their musical craft on this album and their entire performance can only be described as a “masterclass of instrumental rock music”.

It’s great to see Wheel Of Smoke back releasing new albums and I’m hoping they will be releasing new music in the very near future as they’ve been sorely missed. This album is proof of that and I’m hoping the underground scene welcomes the band back with open arms and help promote this great live album like their lives depended on it.

Clouds Taste Satanic - Berlin 2023 (Album Review)

Release Date: March 06th 2026. Record Label: Kinda Like Music. Formats: CD/DD/Vinyl

Berlin 2023 - Tracklisting

1.Second Sight 21:05

2.Sun Death Ritual (Parts I-III) 10:39

3.Spirits of the Green Desert (Part IV) 04:15

4.Beast From the Sea 05:14

Review

Instrumental Doom/Psych/Stoner Metallers Clouds Taste Satanic offer a new “LIVE” record with Berlin 2023, though this time round this performance was captured live in a studio performance which the PR blurb below provides all of the necessary info:

Recorded at Big Snuff Studios in Berlin in May 2023, the album is a no-overdub, live-in-the-room document of the band’s European tour setlist from that year, capturing their sound at its most raw, direct, and immediate.

The whole performance is undeniably raw and is perhaps the closest you’ll likely experience hearing Clouds Taste Satanic on the live stage. The band is super focused performing four classic tracks sourced over the last eleven years or so of their legendary back catalogue. Clouds Taste Satanic put in a very committed performance which can be quite frightening at times especially when they start adding gloomy sound effects that offer a real APOCALYPTIC vibe into the whole performance and that’s only within the first five minutes of the stunning opening track Second Sight.

With there being no overdubs being used for this performance, the whole sound is very stripped back and quite solitary which allows the listener to become fully immersed with the whole record. The band feel like their channelling fellow instrumental heavyweights PELICAN, EARTH, BONGRIPPER, KARMA TO BURN and OM whilst keeping their own original sound highly intact.

The music can be quite slow-paced and highly methodical at times especially within Second Sight and Sun Death Ritual where they feel quite different to their studio counterparts whilst keeping a similar sound at the same time. Clouds Taste Satanic try changing certain themes and technical aspects of each track which adds a new sense of creative freedom with this musical performance which takes you ever so closely to achieving the legendary mindset of “INTER-DIMENSIONAL SPACE GOAT”.

Berlin 2023 does see Clouds Taste Satanic show once again why they’re one of the best storytellers within the whole Doom/Stoner Metal scene where they weave COSMIC energy into a transcendent and meditative style of music that very few bands can achieve such as YOB. You feel this COSMIC energy throughout the whole album which mostly comes through within Second Sight and Sun Death Ritual (Parts I-III).

The final two tracks Spirits of the Green Desert (Part IV) and Beast From the Sea allows the band to concentrate on playing compact grooves and a more straightforward style of riff-centric songs. Though, they are in full-on deconstruction mode with some sections broken down into distorted passages and violent psychedelic soundscapes that leave you questioning what is real. However, along the way they will still show you how the band are great at combining Doom, Stoner, Sludge, Psych and Post-Rock with a highly articulate style of free-form melodies being used at the same time.

Clouds Taste Satanic have nothing left to prove but continue to explore different musical ideas that most bands dare come up with even with tracks that fans already know, love and admire. Berlin 2023 is another classic “LIVE ALBUM” from Clouds Taste Satanic which proves once again why they’re considered “LEGENDS” and “HEROES” to so many within the Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

Review

Doom/Stoner Metal Amphibian Metal Overlords FROGLORD return with their latest offering called Lower & Slower - Vol 1. This album sees the band take time away from expanding their acclaimed “Tale Of The Froglord” saga and revisit some old classics and fan favourites from their impressive back catalogue.

Froglord recorded this album in one take which offers a more rawer, aggressive and slightly downbeat take compared to the original versions. This is the type of album that easily falls under the category “WHAT YOU HEAR IS WHAT YOU GET” and perhaps is the closest representation to the actual LIVE VERSION of Froglord.

The record is soaking in almost FUNERAL DOOM and DIRGE RIDDEN FILTH throughout the album with a murky down-tuned energy being emitted from the speakers. The opening tracks of They Came From Saturn and Road Raisin allows Froglord to setup the violent metropolis of down-tuned Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal vibes with some truly outlandish and bombastic vocals leading the way.

The whole thing crackles with intense recording techniques where the FUZZY surroundings are brutally melodic with Froglord creating massive walls of volume that sometimes pays homage to the likes of ELECTRIC WIZARD, BLACK SABBATH and CONAN.

This album is perhaps best considered a celebration of Froglord’s highly impressive musical legacy which they’ve achieved in such a short space of time where the band first came into existence in 2020. There’s also a great point for this album as Froglord doing the following for their favourite charity:

Importantly, this release carries a strong charitable focus.

• 100% of digital proceeds
• 50% of physical and merch profits

will be donated to the Waterfowl & Wetland Trust (WWT), supporting their mission to restore 100,000 hectares of wetlands by 2050. Environmental advocacy has always been woven into Froglord’s mythos, and this release channels that ethos into direct action.

My favourite parts of the album are perhaps the tracks Green Inferno, Die By The Slime and Swamp Boogie. As these are my actual favourite tracks from the whole Froglord back catalogue. Though, every track is simply put BRUTALLY STUNNING or STUNNINGLY BRUTAL with the riffs always being played LOUD and THICK to the best of the band’s technical and musical ability.

With the album being recorded in one take, the production values aren’t the best but only works to Froglord’s favour as this is about as real Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal music you can possibly get. What can I say about their brilliant cover of the BLACK SABBATH track IRON MAN.

It’s an iconic song that’s been performed from just about everyone and Froglord put their own spin on this track with perhaps a more violent and slime ridden tone without them compromising the message of the original version especially within these FUCKED UP times with the self proclaimed “PRESIDENT OF PEACE” kicking up a total shit storm in the Middle East.

Anyway, I digress. Lower & Slower - Vol 1 proves why FROGLORD are without doubt one of the most unique and original bands currently within the UK Heavy Metal scene. And with this being listed as Volume 1, we can expect more releases within the same vein, though it will be a hard act to follow by beating this great record.

Review

Soundquarium: Live Session is the new live album from Polish Doom/Stoner Metallers Weedow that was captured from a live session on 20th September 2025. The music is played out through a slower style of Doom, Psych, Stoner Metal and Space Rock where the music is always constantly evolving into a different energy compared to their 2024 debut album. This performance contains two tracks (Delusion and Threnody) from that album with the final track Liquid Sand perhaps being a new or unreleased track.

The performance has a sense of intimacy which you can watch on YouTube right now and this adds to the Spaced Out surroundings of Weedow’s music. The music becomes slightly cautious with the sludgy movements offering a wicked level of distorted and amplifier heaviness especially within the tracks of Delusion and Threnody. Weedow operate mostly within the “LOW & SLOW” environment but they do transfer over to a faster style of Spaced Out Doom with familiar sounds from the infamous Polish underground music scene appearing along the way.

Weedow has a great way of blending Space Rock and Ambient themes that adds a contemporary soundtrack feel to their music. As I stated before the music can be quite cautious to begin with but Weedow always finds that magical creative spark to move solely into the right Psychedelic direction with some epic cinematic grooves dominating the musical landscape within Threnody and Liquid Sand.

There’s a haunting Post-Rock and Doomgaze style that superbly develops within the quieter moments that allows Weedow to be more reflective and emotionally engaging with their music. This live album is one that allows the listener to be part of the whole journey and ultimately reward them with a highly captivating style of music that should hopefully allow Weedow establish themselves even further within the global underground scene.

Review

Live On Crow Hill is the live album from Psych Stoner Rockers Mos Eisley Spaceport and with their name inspired by Star Wars, the band play a highly stylish take on all things Space Rock which can be downright Jazzy and Freaky. It’s not the most modern sounding style of music with the band being more Krautrock based for major parts of the record.

The presence of trippy Prog Rock elements make this record quite a long drawn out trip in places but that’s a good thing with the band exploring a different style of Spaced Out extended instrumental jams. There’s a multitude of different sounds being drawn up from the very start within the opening track of Drop Out. The mood is downright ELECTRIC with Mos Eisley Spaceport offering a Classic Rock experience where the music fully goes into OVERDRIVE with echoes of Blues Rock and Stoner Rock combining with the vocals having a slight Garage Rock style.

The mood is quite boisterous and punk rock based with the band members all providing vocals at different parts of the record with second track Space Shift using a certain speech from Star Wars to set up the scene. The music is quite fast-paced with a highly energetic attitude that becomes more heavier with each passing moment. The sound is most definitely obsessed with the Seventies Heavy Psych scene with the grizzled melodies becoming dominated by waves of sludgy distortion and psychedelic sound effects which was quite a cool surprise.

Mos Eisley Spaceport experimented with other areas of Instrumental passages, soundscapes and melodies with that freakish Blues Rock attitude allowing the KRAUTROCK element to become ever more present where the record becomes one of more of SONIC exploration and downright outrageous fun. The band blast their way through a great assortment of tracks such as Raised By A Lioness, Cocaine Blues, Ashes To Ashes and Interstellar Mantis being the most action packed, trippiest and sometimes quite surreal parts of the whole album.

The band keep generating first rate Heavy Psych and Space Rock melodies with great vocal insight along the way which allows the listener to become part of the action. Live On Crow Hill is a great LIVE album which allows Mos Eisley Spaceport to play a collection of their “hits” to a highly appreciative audience in attendance. The band even found the time to play a new song “Interstellar Mantis” which is most definitely the standout track of this album and showcases a different style of music from the band compared to their previous releases.

Live On Crow Hill offers great entertainment throughout and should find a loyal following within the scene.

Review

Ripple Music have taken the big step of releasing a Black Sabbath cover band live album and it's a gamble that pays off huge rewards for them especially when the band in question is BLACK SABBITCH. Black Sabbitch are one of the most premiere Black Sabbath tribute bands since 2012. If you want to see their credentials then read the blurb below:

Black Sabbitch has transcended the typical "tribute band" label, delivering electrifying performances that honor the spirit of Black Sabbath while adding their own unique energy and intensity. Their talent and dedication have earned them coveted spots at major festivals and events, including the inaugural Ozzfiesta at the personal invitation of Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, performing at Cal Jam with Foo Fighters, and playing to a crowd of 80,000 at Wacken Open Air in Germany.

The band has also headlined Psycho Las Vegas and The Maryland Doom Fest, performed on The Kiss Kruise at the request of Paul Stanley, and collaborated with artists like Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Shepard Fairey, and Peaches

If you're endorsed by the legendary Prince Of Darkness then you must be great at what you actually do and BLACK SABBITCH fully deliver on their Live Album - Unrest In The West - that sees this great band put their own spin on classic SABBATH tracks whilst staying close to the original track as possible. The amplified and seedy Blues Rock sounds are played to an appreciative audience with lead vocalist Alice Austin doing her own thing and not trying to mimic Ozzy at all.

Black Sabbitch blast their way through classic tracks Wheels Of Confusion: The Straightener, A National Acrobat, The Wizard and A Hard Road within the first half with a sultry and intense moody style that gives a more emotional energy to the tracks but as I said before still keeping as close as possible to the original versions. Though, that's not to say that Black Sabbitch don't experiment with their versions as the band do venture into areas of Prog Rock and Psych Rock which adds a deceptive Eighties Stadium Rock vision to the whole thing.

My only complaint is that I would have loved to hear their take on iconic tracks such as War Pigs, Iron Man, Fairies Wear Boots and Snowblind being included on this record. However, the tracks included here perhaps are better suited for Black Sabbitch to impress listeners with and when they move into areas of Jazzy interludes with brilliant individual musical performances by Emily Burton (Guitar), Melanie Makaiwi (Bass) and Angie Scarpa (Drums) allowing Black Sabbitch to be a force of HEAVY NATURE,

The second half of the record is even more impressive from Black Sabbitch just amplifying the excitement of classic SABBATH tracks Lord Of This World, Hole In The Sky and Into The Void being played to an appreciative audience.

I’ve heard a ton of Black Sabbath covers live records but I have to say that Unrest In The West is the best I’ve heard to date. As Black Sabbitch pays love and absolute respect to the founders of HEAVY METAL whilst doing their own thing with a classic selection of tracks. The record sounds superb from start to finish that makes the listener being front and centre of the actual concert this album was recorded from.

I’m hoping Ripple Music will release more albums by Black Sabbitch in the future as this is just genuine confirmation why they’re one of the most outstanding Black Sabbath covers bands in the world right now. No question!!!

Review

Live is the debut album from Doom/Stoner Metallers Pogreb who arrive from Minsk, Belarus and who are given their chance to shine within the underground scene courtesy of great label Riff Dealers Records. As the title suggests, this is a LIVE ALBUM that is spread across four lengthy tracks with the album running around forty five minutes in length.

If you’ve grown up on a steady diet of riffs provided by the likes of SLEEP, Electric Wizard, Black Sabbath and BELZEBONG then here’s another superb band to check out. Throw in vast amounts of AMPLIFIER FEEDBACK, Seedy Proto-Doom Metal sounds and a blatant disregard for modern day recording techniques. As this album is raw, loud, mean and nasty as they come. The music is put through a ton of reverb and down-tuned distortion which rarely allows the Psychedelic soundscapes to grow organically. Pogreb feel like they're playing their instruments with a HAMMER and I wouldn’t be surprised if their instruments were completely unusable after this epic live performance.

I have to give credit to the band as they do play superb melodic surroundings along the way which reminds me of SLEEP and COUGH in places especially on the standout tracks of Каждый день, Ельни вий and Погреб. The vocals are quite sparse throughout the album and only appear when they need to appear but Ilya Kovalsky’s style and delivery is what you expect for a raw sounding album such as this. They’re delivered with absolute conviction but with a pure PUNK ROCK energy and PRIMAL essence which could be considered CAVEMAN based but Ilya fully delivers on all fronts.

Pogreb’s record label (Riff Dealers) previously released the stunning and similarly raw live album from Sludge/Stoner Metallers Doūsk where I stated within my review for them - I’m looking forward to hearing a proper “STUDIO” recording from Doūsk in the future but LIVE is one hell of a record that demands your full and undivided attention. The same goes for Pogreb where I would love to hear a proper studio recording of these tracks to hear what they sound like in a studio environment.

I perhaps prefer Pogreb’s “Live” album to Doūsk as it’s heavier and has more intense and evil sounding grooves that adds a brilliantly morbid style of AMPLIFIER DISTORTION to the mix.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Clouds Taste Satanic - Birmingham 2024 (Album Review)

Release Date: February 07th 2025. Record Label: Kinda Like Music. Formats: DD/Vinyl

Birmingham 2024 - Track Listing:

Collision (Part III)
Reclamation (Paris IV-IX)
Pagan Worship
Out Of The Abyss

Review

Birmingham 2024 is the new live album from acclaimed Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal masters Clouds Taste Satanic and is the first in a series of “Live In Studio” releases the band will be releasing. The first volume was recorded in Birmingham, UK which is considered the holy land and birthplace of HEAVY METAL. The album features no overdubs at all which closely resembles how Clouds Taste Satanic sound LIVE

The record features tracks from their albums 79 A.E., Evil Eye and Your Doom Has Come with each subsequent release hopefully having a different track list. The Birmingham edition is a great way to kick-start the series with Clouds Taste Satanic on heavy and inspired DOOMEDELIC form with their last acclaimed record 79 A.E. being performed within its spectacular glory. The sounds are sparse and full of gloomy determination with the band using the space around them for a deeper, meaningful and progressive sound especially on tracks such as Collision (Part III), Reclamation (Parts IV-IX) and Out Of The Abyss.

Clouds Taste Satanic sounds way more COSMIC and PSYCHEDELIC that I initially anticipated especially for a live record such as this. The music is crushingly heavy and sets Clouds Taste Satanic a breed apart from other instrumental bands within the underground scene. They’re masters at the top of their game and they’ve been like this for a very long time now and the band have earned the right to release a series of live albums instead of releasing new material.

If you haven’t seen Clouds Taste Satanic in concert before then Birmingham 2025 is the next best thing with the band giving their all from start to finish and playing some epic and familiar classic tracks along the way.

Birmingham 2024 is another must have release to add to the already expansive Clouds Taste Satanic collection and it’s only going to get bigger. So buckle up for an exciting ride where the atmosphere is raw, aggressive and moody as hell.

Review

Stoner Rock royalty STÖNER are back with their first “official” live album as the band did release a live record for their “debut” release Live In The Mojave Desert: Volume 4 back in 2021 which was subsequently released as a proper studio recording called STONERS RULE to critical acclaim across the Stoner Rock community.

Hittin' The Bitchin' Switch sees STÖNER play their greatest hits along with a couple of KYUSS classics (Gardenia and Green Machine) for great measure across eighty minutes of superbly played Desert/Stoner Rock grooves that proves once again why Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri are legends within the scene. Along with Ryan Güt who is becoming one of the best drummers within the scene today and shows why he’s one of Brant’s most trusted creative partners over the multiple different projects that Brant has released over the last few years.

Hittin' The Bitchin' Switch has a highly majestic and raw sounding quality which makes you feel part of the audience which allows STÖNER to play some mighty fine extended instrumental sounds that allows STÖNER to have multiple “JAMMING SESSIONS” to the delight of the audience in attendance. The highlights of the album are without doubt the KYUSS covers of Gardenia and Green Machine which have lost none of their magic.

STÖNER have a killer supply of classic tracks themselves with songs such as: Evel Never Dies, It Ain’t Free,  Night Tripper vs No Brainer, Own Yer Blues,  Rad Stays Rad and the brilliant fourteen minute epic of Tribe/Fly Girl.

The album is LOUD and brilliantly AGGRESSIVE from the start with its raw and deeply unapologetic production values allowing STÖNER to release a classic LIVE ALBUM in every sense of the word. This is an absolutely superb and must have LIVE album and is perhaps my favourite LIVE record I’ve heard this year.

STÖNER have been on a roll over the last few years and I’m hoping there’s more to come from this great band. Hittin' The Bitchin' Switch features a blistering powerhouse performance from STÖNER and proves once again why the Stoner Rock world needs bands like them to shake up the creative foundations of the whole scene.
