Review

Instrumental Rockers Dead Sea Apes have had quite a varied career since their inception back in 2009 as the band traverse multiple different musical genres such as Psych, Krautrock, Drone, Noise, Psych, Post-Rock and even some Doomed Out movements along the way. The band are widely celebrated as one of the most original bands to emerge from the underground scene and the band are gearing up to release their latest album with Psychic Tension.

Psychic Tension feels like a modern day soundtrack to the fucked up and nightmarish times we currently live in with Dead Sea Apes conjuring gloomy Post-Rock pastured that’s laced with some dark Industrial beats that’s fused with an aggressive Noise Rock energy within the haunting opening track Damn Your Eyes. The sudden shift into heavier Doom and Drone sounds gives the record a cautionary vibe with screeching guitars courtesy of Brett Savage and Jack Toker who also provides bass.

Instrumental Rock music has never felt so alive with Dead Sea Apes bringing a political energy to the record even without any vocals appearing. These guys are masters of their own craft which they play with vivid imagination the hard hitting opening tracks of Damn Your Eyes and Psychic Tension. The music is played with an intense and precise quality which also allows the band to have a JAZZ based attitude. As the music overlaps into different areas of HEAVY ROCK that allows Chris Hardman on Drums to completely think outside the box and conjure up sounds you didn’t think were possible. His muscular presence allows Brett and Jack to conjure up a musical storm that takes no prisoners.

The record does have a thoughtful side within the quieter Post-Rock and Ambient moments that briefly appear but Dead Sea Apes are mostly about that full on delivery with subtle excursions into Drone and Noise Rock textures. This is a major part of how Dead Sea Apes bring that politically charged atmosphere into their music with a surprising style of Drone Metal emerging from behind the scenes that allows a surprising Atmospheric Sludge environment to fully develop.

There are some parts of the album that feels like Dead Sea Apes are inspired by the likes of Russian Circles, Pelican, CAN, MONO and even some legendary Seventies Heavy Rock bands which sees a free-flowing style of ROCK and METAL being heard on tracks such as Psychic Tension, Severance and Deathless.

Dead Sea Apes are always continuously thinking of exciting new ways of injecting that mysterious style of destructive Psych Rock and Space Rock into a more modern setting that feels remarkably offbeat but retaining that vital ingredient of the “ELEMENT OF SURPRISE” that’s made their last few records an absolute joy to listen to.

Despite the experimental creative energy of Psychic Tension, there’s a high amount of instrumental jams, riffs and grooves for long time fans and even casual listeners to fall in love with especially within the standout fourth track of Ursa Minor. This is where Dead Sea Apes get straight down to business playing mind-expanding melodies that maneuver through levels of Noise Rock, Doom, Sludge, Psych, Space Rock, Ambient Rock and Post Rock that’s amplified by a stunning use of Prog Metal just to make things even more violent.

Psychic Tension is one of Dead Sea Apes most essential records in years and feels like the band have reinvented themselves whilst still keeping their core creative principles intact. The record isn’t the most easy going of experiences but I wouldn’t expect anything less from Dead Sea Apes. They’ve been going for the best part of two decades and I hope that continues for a very long time. As this is a record for our fucked up times and I’m pleased we have bands like Dead Sea Apes to tell folks how the world actually is.

This album is nothing short of pure brilliance. Plain and simple.

Review

Psych/Space Rock/KrautRock collective HIJSS return with their sophomore self-titled record and continue the great work the band achieved with their acclaimed 2024 debut album Stuck On Common Ground. This time round HIJSS conjured up a more surreal Electro Rock tinged offering compared to their last album. The Space Rock dynamics once again opens the door to other musical areas appearing such as Grunge, Shoegaze, Punk and Blues Rock with a band that are fully cooking on gas with a wild assortment of outrageous grooves and stunning Spaced Out melodies.

Lead vocalist Lois Lane definitely taps into his Post-Punk persona which takes small creative cues from the likes of Monster Magnet, TORCHE and FU MANCHU throughout the album. The sludgy sounds have an aggressive rhythm and boisterous warm-hearted nature to them which you can instantly feel through the stunning opening tracks of Drain Of Thought and Vicious Cycle. The sound is fast paced and wonderfully efficient especially when HIJSS play a faster style of Sludge/Stoner Rock that still has a grounded Punk Rock approach. The Psychedelic and Space Rock beats have a glorious level of infectious COSMIC surroundings that have some destructive lyrics appearing.

The WEEDIAN themes arrive quite quickly and HIJSS lay that attitude brilliantly thick on the excellent second track Vicious Cycle which reminds me of Dave Wnydorf in his prime. Spiky lyrics which are merged with KrautRock and Post-Punk philosophies which run riot throughout the album. The screeching Electronic beats once again add a warped rhythm with overlapping instrumental passages that’s got some epic synths appearing along the way.

When the stunning and warped tracks Parasite and Underwater appear then HIJSS are simply unstoppable creating music that blends Science Fiction folklore and grounded sensibilities with the music once again being superbly effective whilst being quite hard to describe. There’s a small instance of Industrial beats appearing which allows that KRAUTROCK sound transforming into a gloomier style of Noise, Grunge and Stoner Metal with maximum levels of distorted volumes holding everything together.

Though, HIJSS apply instances of brilliantly played “semi-acoustic” passages which gives this record a gloomier energy with some of the freakiest and trippiest COSMIC grooves forming that leave you in such a cool hallucinogenic state. HIJSS have achieved and created such great things within the first half of the album you begin to wonder how they will top this?

I’m happy to report - Quite Easily!!! - As they keep going on performing and creating more outlandish and heavy distorted “COSMIC GRUNGE” songs that really show how HIJSS have their own original style of music whilst allowing the listener to be transported into their massive sounding world. Songs such as Dopemine and S.W.A.N. are the heaviest, loudest and weirdest songs on the record with the trippy synths and Post-Punk vocals adding a wave of intense movements which are refreshingly “HIP” with HIJSS having a completely FEARLESS attitude appearing within their music.

The final two tracks of Fatal Attraction of OUTRO once again blurs the boundaries between Time and Space with HIJSS applying heavy modern day themes for a mind expanding experience.  HIJSS are always continuing to re-invent themselves through every individual track which makes the album highly unpredictable.

HIJSS are absolute masters of their own Space Rock / Cosmic Grunge domain which leaves you in a complete trance for an album that is bold, hypnotic, mind blowing and brilliantly original within its own right. This is an essential record that everyone needs to fully experience and add to their record collections quickly as possible.

Exclusive Song/Video Premiere For Psych/Noise/Space Rockers DEAD SEA APES New Song SEVERANCE From Upcoming New Album

Dead Sea Apes are back with a fierce new album Psychic Tension – an urgent soundtrack for the nerve-shredding times we live in. Our collective psyche is under attack, reeling from the chaos of a modern world under siege: from war, death, destruction and climate catastrophe to political decay, media manipulation, growing inequality and the rank depravity of the so-called elite. Do we overload ourselves with anxiety, vent our frustration at others, make token gestures to ease our conscience, or just try to carry on regardless? Dead Sea Apes have wrestled these dilemmas – this Psychic Tension – into sonic/musical form, creating catharsis from the chaos.

Psychic Tension picks up where the previous album Rewilding left off, carrying forward the momentum of massive riffs, juggernaut rhythms and squalling sonic overload. Noise-rock, Japanese psych, minimal dub and Electric-era Miles are all part of the mix: each member of Dead Sea Apes brings decades of musical exploration to bear on the music. The iterative repetition of Can meets the telepathic mind-meld of the power trio; the deceptive simplicity of Crazy Horse is pulled through the sonics of PSF Records; the live-in-the-practice-room energy is bolstered by layered landscapes of sound - from ethereal echoes to feedback drones to transistor-torturing lead lines.

Dead Sea Apes have always followed their own path, the music instinctively wired into the world around them. On Psychic Tension, they have once again cooked up a sound that is wholly their own, speaking directly to the turmoil within us and surrounding us in these wild times.

Thanks to the cool folks over at Shamedia, we're excited to premiere the new song/video for Severance from their upcoming new album Psychic Tension

Brett Savage from Dead Sea Apes says this about the song:

"Severance’ is one of the heaviest songs we've written - and one that we really love playing live. It's like a guided missile - I know that when we get to that part of the show, ‘Severance’ just pulls us through to the end. The title isn't a reference to the TV show BTW (which I've
since watched), it's just a word that we felt was as heavy as the song."

Biography

Formed in 2009, the band have become a cornerstone of the independent scene, releasing over 10 albums – including collaborations with artists such as The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol and Black Tempest. Much of their catalogue has found a home on the widely celebrated UK psychedelic label Cardinal Fuzz, alongside stateside partnerships with the legendary Feeding Tube Records.

From northern Italy's summits, through clouds and airplanes, a wall of sound spirals downhill as hijss marks it's birth. Review

Experimental Psych Kraut-Rockers KEVIN release their second album It Is What It Is and it’s quite a vivid collection of tracks that have quite a fractured and disjointed approach to them. The record isn’t the easiest thing to listen to but I was expecting this challenge as the record is being released by the equally weird and amazing record label Riot Season Records. KEVIN bring an aggressive Post-Punk and Noise Rock delivery to their music which is quite different to their 2022 debut album Aftermath since the band are now a duo instead of a dedicated power trio.

The sound is very lo-fi and quite surreal within the excellent opening track of Wood Grain. This is the type of track I could easily be playing in the background of a David Lynch, Gus Van Sant or Steven Sodenbergh film. The song is definitely it’s own thing with warped instrumental passages that bursts into sudden scenes of intense screeching violent guitars that remind me of The Melvins and BORIS at their most experimental. The vocals can only be described as WTF but they’re brilliantly addictive that draw you into KEVIN’s dark world

The atmosphere is quite hallucinogenic with KEVIN blurring the lines between fantasy and reality with sludgy psychedelics and warped noise rock sounds that are surrounded by that delicious Krautrock delivery and intense experimental vibes. KEVIN apply that same experimental and creative logic to the rest of the album where everything once again becomes freakishly weird and demented with experimental Jazz sounds moving straight back into Krautrock territory on tracks such as: Point, Potter’s Wheel, Murphy Is Buried and Yagura.

The album does have a sense of isolation as one of its most dominant themes which gives KEVIN a unique and perspective take within the psychedelic movement. The whole record really comes alive when KEVIN play a more straight forward style of conventional Rock and Roll whilst keeping true to their core Experimental sound which allows some areas of Garage Rock and Industrial sounds to emerge from the darkness.

This is a record that has its own dark moral code which allows the music to be quite deliriously seductive and threatening at the same time which you can ultimately feel on the standout track of Murphy Is Buried. The lo-fi production values once again add a menacing attitude which KEVIN run amok with until the dying seconds of the whole album.

It Is What It Is can be considered an offbeat and hip record which manages to be completely original and superbly different in its own right. KEVIN are another great band to discover from the Japanese Rock underground scene.

Kosmo Kraut Trio HIJSS shares new "s.w.a.n." video; new album "hijss" out September 18th on Heavy Psych Sounds!

Genre-splicing northern Italian power trio hijss teams up with The Sleeping Shaman to present their new video "s.w.a.n", taken from their forthcoming sophomore album "hijss" landing this September 18th on Heavy Psych Sounds.

Watch new video "s.w.a.n." at this location or below

"A high-octane collision of fuzzy grunge riffs, motorik rhythms, post-punk grit, and dizzying space-rock atmosphere." — The Sleeping Shaman

From Northern Italy summits through clouds and airplanes comes hijss. Stimulated by the musical instinct of band leader Lois Lane (guitar & vocals), drummer Maurice's ferocious hits and bassist and keyboardist Pan’s catchy scales, their fearless sonic explorations does not only scratch the surface but goes deep under your skin.

Drawing from grunge rock and post-punk as much as modern space rock, this boundary-free unit propels itself into the stratosphere in a giant blaze of crunch and groove. hijss hit with a fierce punk attitude, seamlessly combining their gritty riffs, pulsating basslines and kraut-infused madness with frontman Lois Lane's Wyndorf-esque croon. The outcome is their own melting pot called "kosmo kraut". Watch their latest video for vicious cycle!

New album "hijss" - Out September 18th on Heavy Psych Sounds

All three band members come from a wide musical background, yet their common denominator is without a doubt their punk attitude. hijss puts genres in the background zapping from punk over blues to space and psychedelic rock. The outcome is a melting pot called "cosmic grunge". That means whatever you want it to mean. Their debut album "stuck on common ground" was released in the spring of 2024 through Heavy Psych Sounds.

Argentinian Doom/Stoner Rock Legends NATAS Announce One Off Performance on November 13th 2026 at C Art Media in Buenos Aires (Argentina)

More than a decade after their split in 2012, legendary Argentine band NATAS announces its long awaited return to the stage with a renewed lineup for a must-see performance on November 13th, at C Art Media in Buenos Aires (Argentina)

NATAS - Broide - Villagra - Bereciartúa

November 13th - C Art Media (Buenos Aires, Argentina) - Tickets available now at Passline

NATAS, one of the defining bands of Latin American stoner rock, returns with a renewed lineup that blends history, power, and sonic evolution.

The project is led by Walter Broide, original member and founder of the band, joined by Gonzalo Villagra, bassist and key songwriter from the group’s most prolific era. This new chapter also features Nico Bereciartúa on guitars and vocals (The Black Crowes / RIFF), bringing a fresh perspective while preserving the essence that defined NATAS’ signature sound.

This return not only marks a reunion with longtime fans and those who never had the opportunity to experience NATAS live, but also introduces a powerful new chapter through the addition of Nico Bereciartúa. As a member of RIFF, one of Argentina's most influential hard rock bands founded by legendary guitarist and singer PAPPO, Bereciartúa carries forward a musical lineage deeply embedded in the history of South American rock. Pappo is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Latin American rock and blues, and Nico's connection to that legacy brings a unique dimension to NATAS' renewed sound.

This return not only marks a reunion with longtime fans and those who never had the opportunity to experience NATAS live, but also presents a new interpretation of the band's musical legacy. The show promises an intense journey through their catalog, alongside fresh live renditions of their classic material.

ABOUT NATAS

Throughout its career, NATAS forged a unique path within the independent stoner rock movement, creating a discography that became a benchmark for the international stoner and psychedelic rock scene. Albums such as Delmar, Ciudad de Brahman, and Toba Trance marked different creative eras of the band, establishing a distinctive sound characterized by heavy riffs, hypnotic atmospheres, and a strong instrumental identity.

Their growth extended far beyond Argentina. NATAS brought its music to stages across Europe and the United States, undertaking international tours that established them as one of South America's most respected underground bands. They performed at major festivals and shared bills with leading artists of the genre, expanding their audience and strengthening their connection with fans worldwide.

This international journey, combined with a constant artistic evolution, transformed NATAS into a cult band whose influence continues to resonate with new generations of musicians and listeners.

Walter Broide

Founder and creative driving force behind NATAS, widely considered the most influential stoner rock band in Latin America. A drummer, songwriter, and producer, Broide developed a powerful and expansive style that took NATAS on tours throughout Europe, the United States, and Latin America. Beyond NATAS, he has also been involved with Poseidótica and Audión, further exploring instrumental and psychedelic rock.

Gonzalo “El Crudo” Villagra

Bassist and a fundamental architect of the NATAS sound. An Argentine recording engineer and producer, Villagra has worked on numerous national and international albums, including projects by Hermética, Almafuerte, Boom Boom Kid, Poseidótica, and Minoría Activa, among many others. In addition to NATAS, he has performed with several bands within the rock and stoner scene, including Santoro and Carne Gaucha, building a versatile career as both musician and producer.

Nico Bereciartúa

Argentine guitarist with a distinguished international career in rock and blues. A member of RIFF, and currently guitarist for The Black Crowes, he has shared stages with world-renowned artists such as Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Steven Tyler (Aerosmith), and John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival). His style combines technical excellence, musical sensitivity, and raw power, establishing him as one of the most respected guitarists of his generation.

Discography

Delmar (1998)

Delmar marked a turning point in NATAS' evolution, expanding the band's heavy rock foundations into more atmospheric and psychedelic territory. The album quickly attracted attention beyond Argentina, helping establish connections with the emerging international stoner rock scene and introducing NATAS to audiences that would later support the band's extensive touring throughout Europe and the United States.

Ciudad de Brahman (1999)

Recorded in San Francisco and produced by Dale Crover of the Melvins, Ciudad de Brahman became one of the defining releases of Latin American stoner rock. Released through the legendary Man's Ruin Records, the album connected NATAS directly with the influential Californian underground scene that also included artists such as Kyuss, Fu Manchu, and the Melvins. The collaboration with Crover helped introduce the band to a global audience and established NATAS as an international presence within the genre.

Corsario Negro (2002)

Produced by acclaimed engineer and producer Billy Anderson, known for his work with Sleep, Neurosis, Melvins, High on Fire, and Mr. Bungle, Corsario Negro further strengthened NATAS' ties to the international heavy music community. Anderson's production emphasized the band’s expansive sound and experimental approach, resulting in one of the most ambitious records in their catalog and reinforcing their reputation among fans of underground heavy and psychedelic rock worldwide.

Toba Trance (2004)

Released through Finnish label Ektro Records, Toba Trance marked one of the boldest artistic departures in NATAS' career. Moving beyond the boundaries of stoner rock, the album embraced long-form improvisation inspired by German krautrock pioneers while incorporating indigenous rhythms, folk percussion, charango, and sonic elements drawn from Argentine cultural traditions. The project strengthened NATAS' connection with the European psychedelic underground, particularly through its relationship with Finland's experimental rock scene and later collaborations with Stefan Koglek of Germany's Colour Haze, one of the most influential bands in European psychedelic rock. These exchanges culminated in the München Sessions recordings and helped establish NATAS as a bridge between South American musical identity and the exploratory spirit of the international psychedelic movement.

El Hombre Montaña (2006)

With El Hombre Montaña, NATAS continued to push beyond genre conventions, delivering a record that blended heavy rock, psychedelia, and progressive experimentation. By this period the band had become a regular presence on international tours and festivals, sharing stages with many of the leading names in stoner and psychedelic rock. The album reflected the confidence of a band operating within a global underground network while maintaining a distinctly South American identity.

Nuevo Orden de la Libertad (2009)

Released after years of international touring and artistic development, Nuevo Orden de la Libertad showcased NATAS at its most mature and expansive. The album synthesized the lessons learned from collaborations with figures such as Dale Crover and Billy Anderson while embracing influences gathered through years of interaction with the European and North American psychedelic underground. The result was a record that transcended the boundaries of stoner rock and reaffirmed NATAS' position as one of the most innovative heavy rock bands to emerge from Latin America.

Review

Live On Crow Hill is the live album from Psych Stoner Rockers Mos Eisley Spaceport and with their name inspired by Star Wars, the band play a highly stylish take on all things Space Rock which can be downright Jazzy and Freaky. It’s not the most modern sounding style of music with the band being more Krautrock based for major parts of the record.

The presence of trippy Prog Rock elements make this record quite a long drawn out trip in places but that’s a good thing with the band exploring a different style of Spaced Out extended instrumental jams. There’s a multitude of different sounds being drawn up from the very start within the opening track of Drop Out. The mood is downright ELECTRIC with Mos Eisley Spaceport offering a Classic Rock experience where the music fully goes into OVERDRIVE with echoes of Blues Rock and Stoner Rock combining with the vocals having a slight Garage Rock style.

The mood is quite boisterous and punk rock based with the band members all providing vocals at different parts of the record with second track Space Shift using a certain speech from Star Wars to set up the scene. The music is quite fast-paced with a highly energetic attitude that becomes more heavier with each passing moment. The sound is most definitely obsessed with the Seventies Heavy Psych scene with the grizzled melodies becoming dominated by waves of sludgy distortion and psychedelic sound effects which was quite a cool surprise.

Mos Eisley Spaceport experimented with other areas of Instrumental passages, soundscapes and melodies with that freakish Blues Rock attitude allowing the KRAUTROCK element to become ever more present where the record becomes one of more of SONIC exploration and downright outrageous fun. The band blast their way through a great assortment of tracks such as Raised By A Lioness, Cocaine Blues, Ashes To Ashes and Interstellar Mantis being the most action packed, trippiest and sometimes quite surreal parts of the whole album.

The band keep generating first rate Heavy Psych and Space Rock melodies with great vocal insight along the way which allows the listener to become part of the action. Live On Crow Hill is a great LIVE album which allows Mos Eisley Spaceport to play a collection of their “hits” to a highly appreciative audience in attendance. The band even found the time to play a new song “Interstellar Mantis” which is most definitely the standout track of this album and showcases a different style of music from the band compared to their previous releases.

Live On Crow Hill offers great entertainment throughout and should find a loyal following within the scene.

Unbelievable Lake - I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (Album Review)

Release Date: June 13th 2025. Record Label: Cursed Monk Records. Formats: CD/DD

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - Tracklisting

1.I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream 41:22

Review

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is the latest sonic expedition from Heavy Psych Sludge Rockers Unbelievable Lake who are a new band for me. Their blend of Psych, Prog, Drone, Sludge, Post-Rock, Krautrock, Ambient and Soundtrack scores allows the band to fully sell their highly original sound to an unexpected audience such as myself.

The record starts slow and draws you in with slowly played instrumental passages, electronica sounds and glitchy beats which allows Unbelievable Lake to play moments of beautiful Psych Rock movements before playing a heavier destructive Sludge Rock force that comes out of nowhere.

Inspired by the likes of OM, Pink Floyd, SLEEP, Hawkwind, Neurosis, CAN and SWANS can be heard through this epic singular forty one minute track with the excellent Drone Rock vocal delivery that drifts into existence when the need calls for it. There is a stripped back atmosphere that can be heard within the recording techniques used for the album which gives I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream a truly haunting and organic sound where they cross over into the Space Rock vortex with a real force of Sludge Rock magnitude on different parts of the album.

I started to wonder why Cursed Monk Records released this album as it doesn’t feel like their usual style of music. As that great label normally releases heavier, seedier and filthier records compared to I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream but after experiencing this great album for the past few weeks now I can understand why they released this great record.

Some folks will probably walk away from this great album without fully experiencing for themselves as the HEAVIER and AGGRESSIVE moments take time to fully form and appear. However, it’s the quieter and more outlandish soundscapes that Unbelievable Lake impressed me the most. The album takes a more thoughtful and daring creative approach with nuanced ambient sounds and chill out Post-Rock / Krautrock environments for the majority part of the album.

Everything goes BAT-SHIT crazy with fucked up SLUDGE METAL grooves appearing around the twenty five minutes mark. There’s the SWANS aspect coming into play which firmly pushes I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream into Experimental Rock/Metal territory.

Overall, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream offers a deliciously heavy, aggressive and brilliantly FRENZIED experience which is perhaps better suited to the more experienced fan of Avant Garde and Experimental music with some thrilling moments of Doom and Sludge metal being played along the way.
