Review

Psych/Space Rock/KrautRock collective HIJSS return with their sophomore self-titled record and continue the great work the band achieved with their acclaimed 2024 debut album Stuck On Common Ground. This time round HIJSS conjured up a more surreal Electro Rock tinged offering compared to their last album. The Space Rock dynamics once again opens the door to other musical areas appearing such as Grunge, Shoegaze, Punk and Blues Rock with a band that are fully cooking on gas with a wild assortment of outrageous grooves and stunning Spaced Out melodies.

Lead vocalist Lois Lane definitely taps into his Post-Punk persona which takes small creative cues from the likes of Monster Magnet, TORCHE and FU MANCHU throughout the album. The sludgy sounds have an aggressive rhythm and boisterous warm-hearted nature to them which you can instantly feel through the stunning opening tracks of Drain Of Thought and Vicious Cycle. The sound is fast paced and wonderfully efficient especially when HIJSS play a faster style of Sludge/Stoner Rock that still has a grounded Punk Rock approach. The Psychedelic and Space Rock beats have a glorious level of infectious COSMIC surroundings that have some destructive lyrics appearing. 

The WEEDIAN themes arrive quite quickly and HIJSS lay that attitude brilliantly thick on the excellent second track Vicious Cycle which reminds me of Dave Wnydorf in his prime. Spiky lyrics which are merged with KrautRock and Post-Punk philosophies which run riot throughout the album. The screeching Electronic beats once again add a warped rhythm with overlapping instrumental passages that’s got some epic synths appearing along the way.

When the stunning and warped tracks Parasite and Underwater appear then HIJSS are simply unstoppable creating music that blends Science Fiction folklore and grounded sensibilities with the music once again being superbly effective whilst being quite hard to describe. There’s a small instance of Industrial beats appearing which allows that KRAUTROCK sound transforming into a gloomier style of Noise, Grunge and Stoner Metal with maximum levels of distorted volumes holding everything together.

Though, HIJSS apply instances of brilliantly played “semi-acoustic” passages which gives this record a gloomier energy with some of the freakiest and trippiest COSMIC grooves forming that leave you in such a cool hallucinogenic state. HIJSS have achieved and created such great things within the first half of the album you begin to wonder how they will top this?

I’m happy to report - Quite Easily!!! - As they keep going on performing and creating more outlandish and heavy distorted “COSMIC GRUNGE” songs that really show how HIJSS have their own original style of music whilst allowing the listener to be transported into their massive sounding world. Songs such as Dopemine and S.W.A.N. are the heaviest, loudest and weirdest songs on the record with the trippy synths and Post-Punk vocals adding a wave of intense movements which are refreshingly “HIP” with HIJSS having a completely FEARLESS attitude appearing within their music.

The final two tracks of Fatal Attraction of OUTRO once again blurs the boundaries between Time and Space with HIJSS applying heavy modern day themes for a mind expanding experience.  HIJSS are always continuing to re-invent themselves through every individual track which makes the album highly unpredictable.

HIJSS are absolute masters of their own Space Rock / Cosmic Grunge domain which leaves you in a complete trance for an album that is bold, hypnotic, mind blowing and brilliantly original within its own right. This is an essential record that everyone needs to fully experience and add to their record collections quickly as possible.

Valley of the Sun’s sixth studio album The Blacklight Sessions, is a deep dive into the sonic roots of the band who continues to defy genre norms. With tracks ranging from blues jam to psychedelic desert trip to driving stoner riffage, the band continues to demonstrate that their music knows no bounds, nor should it. Their previous single The Whiskey Elf encapsulates this perfectly, channeling the spirit of Ten Years After and Grand Funk Railroad while retaining the modern heavy groove that has become the band's signature.

Following the 2024 release of the acclaimed self-released Quintessence, their new album The Blacklight Sessions sees the band consisting of Ryan Ferrier (guitar, vocals), Chris Sweeney (bass) and Johnny Kathman (drums) embarking on a new chapter. This release marks their first for Heavy Psych Sounds and arrives as the band is fully locked into their powerful power-trio format and ready to spread the gospel of their high-octane riff-rock across Europe this fall.

The Lowdown

With the writing and recording of ”Blood That I Spill Turns To Fire”, the aim was to keep it raw, heavy and groovy. Expanding our musical trajectory. Adding a lil more melody to vocals as well. We recorded with Joona in Studio Underjord and we told him right away that we want to keep it raw and dirty.

For this record we brought in Tommy Hanning on drums, he was in FIREBREATHER at the time of the recording of our first album so we knew he was capable.

We were in between drummers when it was time to hit the studio for our fourth album and he was kind enough to learn the songs from his home, he lives way up north in Sweden. He flew down to jam with us for one weekend and after that we hit the studio. All in all we think we came out with a raw, heavy and to us, moving record.

We hope it'll move other people too."

MR BISON is a rock band that melds heavy psychedelic sounds with progressive elements and evocative soundscapes. Formed in a small coastal town in Tuscany, Italy, the band has reinvented their sound over the course of four albums from stoner rock to heavy psychedelic and progressive sounds, firmly establishing themselves in 2018 with the acclaimed Holy Oak and the great concept album Seaward in the 2020, which suddenly brought them touring around Europe and US many times, attending the best festivals on the scene. After their second critically acclaimed LP “Sang-Dragon” Fredrik Bolzann & Niko Lass have been joined in their act by Ügo Greifengeier & Djé Cndrs for a split with cult fellows Dead Witches published by Heavy Psych Sounds Records and followed by the third LP “Trove of Oddities at the Devil’s Driveway”. Now a maniac 4-piece band wholly dedicated to the dark arts and the everlasting quest for The Tone, they are set to release their new album on HPS Records this fall.

US Doom Metal Giants THE OBSESSED sign to Heavy Psych Sounds!

American doom metal icons THE OBSESSED have inked a worldwide deal with Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the release of their new studio album in 2027.

The Obsessed is a rock band. A fucking HARD rock band. Since their formation in 1978, they have become known around the world for their influential contribution to the origins and continued legacy of the doom metal and underground hard rock genres. The distinctive vocals and guitar wizardry of founder and driving force Scott “Wino” Weinrich has left a mark on the world of heavy music that continues to inspire.

The Obsessed gained momentum in the Baltimore/DC area of the USA in the early to mid 1980’s during the height of the hardcore punk movement. Often cited as the band that bridged heavy metal and punk together, the band gained the respect of punk heavyweight contemporaries Black Flag, The Bad Brains, and Minor Threat, to name a few. The attitude and spirit of The Obsessed have led many to regard them as “America’s Motorhead”.

Wino went on to join the doom metal giants Saint Vitus as lead singer on seminal albums including 1986’s Born Too Late. In 1990, The Obsessed came back with their eponymous debut album, The Obsessed. This album was quickly followed by 1991’s Lunar Womb and 1994’s The Church Within. All three of these albums shaped and paved the way for future heavy rock bands and the doom scene as it’s known today. Wino’s gift for prose and his never-ending search for truth and meaning allow his words to hit as heavy as the riffs he plays.

Although The Obsessed went on a hiatus after The Church Within’s release on Columbia Records, Wino’s sheer passion and prolific nature led him to pursue many other critically acclaimed projects such as Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Shrinebuilder and various acoustic releases. Long-time fan Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) specifically asked Wino to perform on his all-star Probot album, released in 2004. In 2012, Wino rejoined Saint Vitus until the worldwide cry for The Obsessed could no longer be denied, and in 2016, he reunited the band once and for all and has been kicking ass and taking names ever since. Drummer Brian “Dawg” Costantino joined the band at this time. The band signed to Relapse Records and recorded 2017’s Sacred, an album showing The Obsessed back with pure vengeance, bringing the band back to venues and festival stages around the world.

In 2022, the band became a four-piece with the addition of Chris Angleberger on bass and Jason Taylor on guitar. They have been touring heavily since and have been seen on USA and European festival stages such as Hellfest, Freak Valley Festival, Snowblind Festival and Desertfest. The band’s latest record, Gilded Sorrow, was released in early 2024 on Ripple Music and lauded as a "must-listen for fans of the genre and a compelling entry point for newer voyagers into the world of doom" by Metal Hammer and "the best the band has ever sounded" by Ghost Cult Magazine.

The Obsessed welcomed heavy rock titan Bob Pantella (also Monster Magnet) to the lineup as their new drummer in 2025, marking a new chapter in their legacy. Now, in 2026, the band has signed to Heavy Psych Sounds and is working on their new album, which release date is yet to be announced. The Obsessed are here to stay. "IF IT AIN’T HEAVY… IT AIN’T SHIT!!!"

Stoner doom heroes SONS OF OTIS to reissue all albums on Heavy Psych Sounds

Toronto's stoner doom icons SONS OF OTIS have signed to Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the reissue of their entire catalog, and reveal the first two releases to get a brand new pressing today.

For more than three decades, Toronto’s SONS OF OTIS have been one of Canada’s most respected heavy bands, forging a signature blend of doom, stoner rock, and psychedelia built on crushing riffs, hypnotic grooves, and immersive atmospheres. Their DIY debut Paid to Suffer (1994) introduced the band’s raw, uncompromising sound. About the first two records, frontman Ken Baluke states: “Our first recording 'Paid To Suffer' was completely DIY. We were all broke and asked our friends for donations in exchange for the tape and their name in the liner notes. We only released it on cassette. It was live off the floor and raw as hell, and we were looking to offend as many people as possible. Instead… people liked it. As for debut album 'Spacejumbofudge', it was our first full-length on a major label. It opened a lot of eyes back then. This is where our trademark “wall of fuzz” sound started to take shape. Big budget, big sounds... Trippy and heavy… a cult favorite of the underground scene."

Italian heavy psychedelic and progressive rock goldsmiths MR BISON announce the release of their new studio album "The Garden of Forgotten Dreams" this September 25th on Heavy Psych Sounds Records, and present the first single "Cosmic Tide" today.

The Garden: a magical place where lost dreams don't fade, but grow like silent flowers. Each petal holds an unfulfilled wish, each scent a memory left behind. In this garden, those who enter rediscover parts of themselves they thought lost and understand that nothing should be forgotten if it has touched their heart.

About the album theme, the band comments: "The garden is the image that recurs most frequently throughout the album. We chose it as a metaphor for a refuge, a place where we can nurture our natural inclinations, let them grow and blossom, and where we can also keep our shadows and lights hidden. Where our secrets, our most authentic truths, our aspirations and our dreams, can therefore remain guarded until we are ready to reveal them to those who can contain and appreciate them."

MR BISON is a rock band that melds heavy psychedelic sounds with progressive elements and evocative soundscapes. Formed in a small coastal town in Tuscany, Italy, the band has reinvented their sound over the course of four albums from stoner rock to heavy psychedelic and progressive sounds, firmly establishing themselves in 2018 with the acclaimed Holy Oak and the great concept album Seaward in the 2020, which suddenly brought them touring around Europe and US many times, attending the best festivals on the scene. The foursome released Echoes From the Universe in February 2024 via Heavy Psych Sounds, reaching many international Best Albums lists — including a top spot on the prestigious Doom Charts — and followed by touring across Europe, the US West Coast Tour and the UK and numerous festival appearances.

Their new concept album The Garden of Forgotten Dreams was produced and recorded by guitarist Matteo Barsacchi, mixed by Richard Behrens (Elder, Kadavar) at Big Snuff Studio in Berlin, and mastered by Carl Saff in Chicago and Adam Ayan (Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam) in Portland. The band has already been confirmed to play Stoned From The Underground, Blackdoor Fest and other summer festivals, and will be touring Europe and the UK again in the fall of 2026.

US Psychedelic Rock Trio DEAD MEADOW to release "Foundlings" rarities album on July 31st via Heavy Psych Sounds Records

Washington D.C. psychedelic rock luminaries Dead Meadow have teamed up with Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the exclusive release of "Foundlings" — a 7-track collection that digs deep into the band's archives, spanning over two decades of sessions, tributes and unreleased gems — on July 31st, 2026.

Known for their hypnotic blend of heavy riffage, dreamy atmospherics, and mesmerising grooves, Dead Meadow have been delivering their organic, masterful and utterly transportive sonic recipe for nearly thirty years now. The Foundlings rarities collection promises to illuminate the band's evolution, featuring previously unheard material that showcases their unique ability to channel classic influences — from Sabbath-inspired heaviness to shimmering The Cure-like textures — through their own hazy lens, while also serving as a tribute to bassist and founding member Steve Kille, who passed away two years ago after a long battle against cancer.

Featuring the core lineup of guitarist and vocalist Jason Simon and late bassist Steve Kille, with drum duties split between Mark Laughlin and Stephen McCarty, Foundlings compiles material recorded between 2002 and 2024. Highlights include a rendition of Powell St. John's "Kingdom of Heaven" (from the Sonic Cathedral sessions), a take on The Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" (from The Nothing They Need sessions), and a version of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" originally cut for a Cleopatra Records tribute, alongside originals drawn from the Voyager to Voyager album recording sessions, a EarthQuaker Devices session, and a Committee to Keep Music Evil session recorded with Anton Newcombe and Rob Campanella (The Brian Jonestown Massacre).

Foundlings is poised to be essential listening for both long-time devotees and new converts. It arrives as the band continues to cement a legacy defined by fearless exploration.

Formed in the fall of 1998, DEAD MEADOW emerged from the Washington, D.C. indie/punk scene to fuse their love of early ’70s hard rock and ’60s psychedelics into a unique marriage of dreamy guitar-fuzz bliss and stoney riffs. Over the course of seven studio albums, three live records and a Peel Session, they incorporated darker eastern influences and increasingly dense and hypnotic layering as they toured such far-reaching places as Russia and Australia and performed at renowned festivals including Roadburn and Levitation fest. They’ve become an inarguable pillar of the modern heavy psych movement alongside contemporaries like Black Mountain, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and the Black Angels.

Argentina’s cult doom trio announce the release of their first-ever double live album "Live in Europe" — twenty tracks of pure occult madness to be unleashed this August 7th on Heavy Psych Sounds Records.

Recorded during the band’s European tour in 2025, the Live in Europe double album captures twenty tracks of crushing, ritualistic heaviness performed in Barcelona (Spain) and Arnhem (Netherlands). With a sound drenched in sleaze and psychedelia, the Argentinian trio's notoriety was cemented when Electric Wizard’s Jus Oborn championed their album I’m Heroin as a personal favorite. In the summer of 2025, Mephistofeles signed to European label Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the long-awaited reissue of their entire catalog, opening their music to a new generation of fans. The doom from the deep south is rising. Emerging from the fertile underworld of the Argentine stoner doom scene, Mephistofeles has forged a reputation as one of the genre's most visceral and uncompromising acts. Their ascent was meteoric. Their 2016 debut, Whore, quickly became an underground staple. They solidified their status with 2017’s I’m Heroin, an album so potent it earned the ultimate seal of approval: Electric Wizard’s Jus Oborn named it a favorite, praising its “great filthy guitar sound and creepy lyrics” and calling it “dirty and sleazy heavy psychedelic doom.” Demonstrating relentless drive, Mephistofeles continued their ascent with the self-produced Satan Sex Ceremonies (2019) and the gritty Violent Theatre (2022). Now, energized by a powerful new line-up featuring drummer Luca Frizza, the band is ready for a new era.
