Firebreather formed in Gothenburg in 2016, rooted in crushing, sludge-doused doom from the very beginning. Firebreather is a band that never postures or asks to be admired for their heaviness- and to see them live is to experience exactly why. Their weight takes on another life entirely. About the band

US Doom Metal Giants THE OBSESSED sign to Heavy Psych Sounds!

American doom metal icons THE OBSESSED have inked a worldwide deal with Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the release of their new studio album in 2027.

The Obsessed is a rock band. A fucking HARD rock band. Since their formation in 1978, they have become known around the world for their influential contribution to the origins and continued legacy of the doom metal and underground hard rock genres. The distinctive vocals and guitar wizardry of founder and driving force Scott “Wino” Weinrich has left a mark on the world of heavy music that continues to inspire.

The Obsessed gained momentum in the Baltimore/DC area of the USA in the early to mid 1980’s during the height of the hardcore punk movement. Often cited as the band that bridged heavy metal and punk together, the band gained the respect of punk heavyweight contemporaries Black Flag, The Bad Brains, and Minor Threat, to name a few. The attitude and spirit of The Obsessed have led many to regard them as “America’s Motorhead”.

Wino went on to join the doom metal giants Saint Vitus as lead singer on seminal albums including 1986’s Born Too Late. In 1990, The Obsessed came back with their eponymous debut album, The Obsessed. This album was quickly followed by 1991’s Lunar Womb and 1994’s The Church Within. All three of these albums shaped and paved the way for future heavy rock bands and the doom scene as it’s known today. Wino’s gift for prose and his never-ending search for truth and meaning allow his words to hit as heavy as the riffs he plays.

Although The Obsessed went on a hiatus after The Church Within’s release on Columbia Records, Wino’s sheer passion and prolific nature led him to pursue many other critically acclaimed projects such as Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Shrinebuilder and various acoustic releases. Long-time fan Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) specifically asked Wino to perform on his all-star Probot album, released in 2004. In 2012, Wino rejoined Saint Vitus until the worldwide cry for The Obsessed could no longer be denied, and in 2016, he reunited the band once and for all and has been kicking ass and taking names ever since. Drummer Brian “Dawg” Costantino joined the band at this time. The band signed to Relapse Records and recorded 2017’s Sacred, an album showing The Obsessed back with pure vengeance, bringing the band back to venues and festival stages around the world.

In 2022, the band became a four-piece with the addition of Chris Angleberger on bass and Jason Taylor on guitar. They have been touring heavily since and have been seen on USA and European festival stages such as Hellfest, Freak Valley Festival, Snowblind Festival and Desertfest. The band’s latest record, Gilded Sorrow, was released in early 2024 on Ripple Music and lauded as a "must-listen for fans of the genre and a compelling entry point for newer voyagers into the world of doom" by Metal Hammer and "the best the band has ever sounded" by Ghost Cult Magazine.

The Obsessed welcomed heavy rock titan Bob Pantella (also Monster Magnet) to the lineup as their new drummer in 2025, marking a new chapter in their legacy. Now, in 2026, the band has signed to Heavy Psych Sounds and is working on their new album, which release date is yet to be announced. The Obsessed are here to stay. "IF IT AIN’T HEAVY… IT AIN’T SHIT!!!"

Toronto's stoner doom icons SONS OF OTIS have signed to Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the reissue of their entire catalog, and reveal the first two releases to get a brand new pressing today.

For more than three decades, Toronto’s SONS OF OTIS have been one of Canada’s most respected heavy bands, forging a signature blend of doom, stoner rock, and psychedelia built on crushing riffs, hypnotic grooves, and immersive atmospheres. Their DIY debut Paid to Suffer (1994) introduced the band’s raw, uncompromising sound. While Spacejumbofudge (1996) expanded that vision into psychedelic territory, becoming an underground stoner rock classic. With Temple Ball (1999), the songwriting grew more expansive, helping establish the band’s international reputation.

Songs for Worship (2001) perfectly captured their balance of heaviness and atmosphere. It was live off the floor and raw as hell, and we were looking to offend as many people as possible. Instead… people liked it. As for debut album 'Spacejumbofudge', it was our first full-length on a major label. It opened a lot of eyes back then. This is where our trademark “wall of fuzz” sound started to take shape. Big budget, big sounds... Trippy and heavy… a cult favorite of the underground scene."

Italian heavy psychedelic and progressive rock goldsmiths MR BISON announce the release of their new studio album "The Garden of Forgotten Dreams" this September 25th on Heavy Psych Sounds Records, and present the first single "Cosmic Tide" today.

The Garden: a magical place where lost dreams don't fade, but grow like silent flowers. Each petal holds an unfulfilled wish, each scent a memory left behind. In this garden, those who enter rediscover parts of themselves they thought lost and understand that nothing should be forgotten if it has touched their heart.

About the album theme, the band comments: "The garden is the image that recurs most frequently throughout the album. We chose it as a metaphor for a refuge, a place where we can nurture our natural inclinations, let them grow and blossom, and where we can also keep our shadows and lights hidden. Where our secrets, our most authentic truths, our aspirations and our dreams, can therefore remain guarded until we are ready to reveal them to those who can contain and appreciate them."

MR BISON is a rock band that melds heavy psychedelic sounds with progressive elements and evocative soundscapes. US Psychedelic Rock Trio DEAD MEADOW to release "Foundlings" rarities album on July 31st via Heavy Psych Sounds Records

Washington D.C. psychedelic rock luminaries Dead Meadow have teamed up with Heavy Psych Sounds Records for the exclusive release of "Foundlings" — a 7-track collection that digs deep into the band's archives, spanning over two decades of sessions, tributes and unreleased gems — on July 31st, 2026.

Known for their hypnotic blend of heavy riffage, dreamy atmospherics, and mesmerising grooves, Dead Meadow have been delivering their organic, masterful and utterly transportive sonic recipe for nearly thirty years now. The Foundlings rarities collection promises to illuminate the band's evolution, featuring previously unheard material that showcases their unique ability to channel classic influences — from Sabbath-inspired heaviness to shimmering The Cure-like textures — through their own hazy lens, while also serving as a tribute to bassist and founding member Steve Kille, who passed away two years ago after a long battle against cancer.

Featuring the core lineup of guitarist and vocalist Jason Simon and late bassist Steve Kille, with drum duties split between Mark Laughlin and Stephen McCarty, Foundlings compiles material recorded between 2002 and 2024. Formed in the fall of 1998, DEAD MEADOW emerged from the Washington, D.C. indie/punk scene to fuse their love of early ’70s hard rock and ’60s psychedelics into a unique marriage of dreamy guitar-fuzz bliss and stoney riffs. Mottainai, the 2nd song takes aim at a reckless, consumption-driven mindset—the relentless pursuit of instant gratification and shortcuts. The song warns that this culture of excess and selfishness will ultimately leave a devastating legacy for future generations.

California Sky is a psychedelic, acoustic ode to Samavayo’s 2025 US tour, captures a paradoxical longing for the American desert landscape. It evokes a sense of spiritual belonging in the vast emptiness of Joshua Tree, while reflecting a deep yet helpless emotional connection to the United States and all its contradictions.

Winter 2024 saw vocalist Daisy Savage enter the fold in time for a year of touring and building new dynamics as the band joined the Heavy Psych Sounds Festival across Italy, Switzerland, Greece & the UK alongside playing further headline shows.

Having signed to HPS in 2019 Alunah have continued to evolve and were listed by Metal Hammer in July 2025 as one of the ten most important bands to come out of Birmingham. They have toured with the likes of Paradise Lost, The Obsessed, Nick Oliveri's Mondo Generator and been regulars on the European festival circuit.

All three band members of Samavayo grew up in East-Berlin, in the neighbourhoods Lichtenberg and Friedrichshain. As a 10 year old kid, the singer fled as a political refugee from his home country of Iran to Berlin, Germany. The brothers Andreas and Stephan grew up in East-Berlin.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city was open, letting in cultural influences from any foreign country. The capital city became a multi-cultural melting pot where a singer from Teheran and two brothers from Berlin started making music. 600 live shows in Europe and overseas followed, including gigs in Brazil, Albania, Greece, Croatia and France.

European stoner, doom and psychedelic rock festival Heavy Psych Sounds Fest returns to London grounds this fall and reveals the first batch of bands to hit the Signature Brew Blackhorse Road stage on November 13-14th. Tickets on sale now!

Leading the charge are Italian fuzz pillars Black Rainbows, whose explosive blend of garage psych and stoner rock fury has made them cult heroes across the underground, alongside Greece's doom worshippers Acid Mammoth, who summon crushing, incense-heavy riffs from the deepest abyss. Scotland's cosmic travellers The Cosmic Dead will bring their sprawling space odysseys, while UK desert rockers Psychlona are set to channel sun-scorched grooves and trance-inducing melodies with their distinctively British swagger. Sweden's Firebreather are all about modern sludge-doom at its most volcanic, all monstrous tone and wildfire energy, and Italy's own psychedelic power trio Mr.Bison round out the ritual with raw, 70s-soaked heavy psych that stomps, swirls, and hypnotises from first riff to last.

Review

Yawning Balch once again continue their seismic, hypnotic and dreamlike journey across the Californian Desert with echoes of Shoegaze, Psych, Stoner, Post-Rock and Ambient textures with Volume Four. This is their first release since January 2025 and the band get down straight down to business in crafting a free forming expedition into the murky sounds of the instrumental rock scene. This volume has a heavier and way more abstract based sound with Yawning Balch employing a hazy backdrop of surreal sounding progressive passages though keeping close by to their critically acclaimed Desert Rock sound.

 

The album contains two tracks running around forty five minutes in length with both volumes created as a direct result of a massive five hour jamming session. This gives the album a sense of urgency which is the similar vibe laid down on Volume Three but this one has a heavier and direct sound. Yawning Balch perhaps experimented more here with sonic environments doubling for the Desert Rock playing fields that the band use throughout the album. The sudden shift into Shoegaze and Post-Stoner dynamics with some epic Space Rock guitars courtesy of Gary Arce and Bob Balch allowing Mario Lalli (Bass) and Bill Stinson (Drums) to create a grounded rhythm section that opens the listeners mind to new spaced out experiences.

The opening track Pyramid Of Djoser is wonderfully opaque and superbly adventurous at the same time with Yawning Man playing their heaviest and aggressive track to date. The song is perhaps mostly dominated by the creative sounds of Yawning Man with Bob Balch’s creative input being more tenacious where he delivers the knockout blow of generating intense aggressive Stoner Rock surroundings. The level of Progressive environments is impressive yet again with a swirling vortex of Post-Rock and Ambient based attitudes holding everything together with a sense of melody that reminds me of Russian Circles and Pelican in places. 

The final track Water Ritual continues with that surreal and trippy environment with haunting instrumental passages firming delving into the world of Spaced Out Desert Rock with flashes of uplifting Psychedelic movements that firmly embraces and rewrite the Stoner Rock folklore that all members have created throughout their legendary careers with their respective bands and musical projects. 

Even though the album is purely instrumental yet again, Volume Four tells an intriguing and highly involving story that easily drops the listener right into of the legendary “Generator” parties that were all the range back in the day that firmly helped to establish the rules of the Stoner Rock scene that we all know and love today. The production values are excellent but they still allow Yawning Balch to offer a cautionary tale where the destination is just as important as the overall journey.

I’m hopeful once more for future chapters within the extraordinary and cinematic story that Yawning Balch has created so far. If this is the last chapter then the guys have ended the journey on a triumphant high where I’m completely satisfied especially after we’ve been treated to four classic individual albums over the years.

Volume Four is an exquisite and beautifully realised album that demands you full undivided attention.

Exclusive Album Premiere Of WEEDIAN METAL Heavyweights TONS Brilliant New Album STONED VILLAINS

Your favorite weed sludgers are ready to come back with their fourth studio album, the aptly titled "Stoned Villains," out in April on your beloved Heavy Psych Sounds Records. The band's distinctive sound emerges immediately after the first listen: seven tracks of heavy, sulfurous doom-sludge, with influences ranging from the '90s to Turin-inspired hardcore punk, the scene in which our "villains" were formed and raised. 

Heavy and cutting guitars, a seismic rhythm section, and Gingerzilla's voice barking out ungraceful tales of weed abuse and uncontrolled eating. The song titles perfectly describe Tons: a band that doesn't take itself too seriously and uses irony as its strong point. "Stoned Villains" was recorded and mixed in Turin by Danilo "Dano" Battocchio at Deepest Sea Studio and mastered by James Plotkin. Enjoy!

The Lowdown
