Review

Drone/Doom/Sludge Metal instrumentalist Void Sinker offers another round of distorted misery with their latest chapter called Pitch Black Sun. Influenced by the wretched and cursed summer weather that Guglielmo Allegro experienced in his native home country of Italy, this record continues a similar journey heard on the last record of Cycle. This record has a gut-wrenching drone sound that holds everything down into the depths of Sludge based DOOM METAL. 

There’s a crushing Pitch-Black delivery that allows Void Sinker to create overlapping areas of pure violent distortion with a sweeping Post-Metal sound that has a gloomy aquatic energy that is disturbingly played for long stretches of mind expanding psychological terror.  The three part EP aligns the music closely to the likes of BONG, SUNN O))) and EARTH with no sense of upbeat energy appearing at all.

The thick industrial beats and massive chasms expand even more violently on the epic second track “BLACK” with even more layers of evil sounding DRONE METAL coming up from the depths of hell. The subtle chants can be heard which adds a classic Seventies Horror Movie effect with brief excursions into Cosmic Horror along the way.

Pitch Black Sun lasts for around twenty five minutes but it’s another cautionary and superb record from Void Sinker where they feel rejuvenated by the great use of Black Metal dynamics that perfectly matches the downbeat cover that illustrates what to expect for this record. The Ambient melodies have a distinctive Ambient Metal attitude with Guglielmo performing long drawn out instrumental sounds that feel like a mentally and physically exhausting workout before everything is said and done.

Void Sinker impresses yet again with another sublime release that’s perhaps his most intense, darkest and droned out record in quite some time. This is one perhaps for dedicated followers of Void Sinker only but what a great experience that ultimately awaits them.

Recorded at home during this cursed summer heat—which grows increasingly oppressive—the EP was crafted to capture the sense of suffocation and faintness felt beneath the scorching sun of a season that is becoming ever more unbearable for humankind.

Review

Volts = Amps x Ohms (Demo) is the latest single from FUZZ VOYAGE which is also a collaborative piece from Heavy Haze Audio Lab in Trujilo, Peru and Carcass John Fossum Art. This is explained below by the band themselves:

“This release is a collaboration with Heavy Haze Audio Lab in Trujilo, Peru and Carcass John Fossum Art. Without these guys this track would have never came to life and for them I am grateful to tell you of this new release.”

The track itself is an almost ten minute journey into the fuzzier and spaced out side of the Doom/Stoner Rock landscape. The song is purely instrumental but still offers an engaging and highly psychedelic experience with FUZZ VOYAGE including elements of Space Rock, Fuzz and Desert Rock. The song has a great balance of HEAVY vs QUIET dynamics which sees the song dramatically shift into heavier areas of Stoner Rock/Metal.

You can hear echoes and sounds from the likes of Yawning Man, Karma To Burn, Earthless and Monkey3 but with FUZZ VOYAGE adding that layer of distorted Doomed Out attitude especially within the first half of the song. The later stages of the song stays are perhaps more subdued with a great style of Post-Rock and Ambient Rock still allowing FUZZ VOYAGE to develop an eerie style of cinematic music.

Volts = Amps x Ohms (Demo) is an exquisite song and I’m hoping there’s more to come from FUZZ VOYAGE as this track feels like the band have some unfinished business but you can’t deny how great the excellent grooves and fuzzy spaced out soundscapes that are played here.

Review

En Ruinas is the fourth album from Psych Stoner Rockers Ancestro and this is my first time within their heavy and spaced out realm. The album is helped by the band using levels of Doom, Post-Metal, Sludge Metal and Cosmic Rock which all play a huge part for Ancestro exploring a more personal style of Instrumental music you initially expect. The record can be quite bleak and unforgiving with the distorted amplifiers playing a massive part transporting the listener to a destructive part of the cosmos where you feel multiple planets have been destroyed by a mysterious destructive force. 

Ancestro feel inspired by the likes of SLEEP, HAWKWIND, MONOLORD, MONSTER MAGNET, KARMA TO BURN and EARTHLESS whilst creating their own great style of Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metal with the great use of keyboards and sound effects which is heard from the excellent tracks of 13001, Status Quo and Andante. There is a level of Progressive Rock appearing which gives an eerie Seventies Rock energy whilst employing some intricate areas of Nineties Doom, Grunge and Stoner based themes. 

Ancestro make great use of SONIC MANIPULATION and AMPLIFIER DISTORTION throughout this album where it feels like sheer poetry at times. The band are equally wonderful and brilliantly creative when joining up areas of Post-Metal, Prog Rock, Space Rock and Acid Rock for a sound that’s superbly cinematic. This feels like a soundtrack to classic DISASTER movie being played for the WEEDIAN community to call their own.

En Ruinas does have a great storyline holding everything together as the album is explained below by the band themselves:

“Inspired by life in Trujillo, Peru, the album explores the city’s transformation—from its once combative spirit to a present shaped by decay, loss of identity, and day to day violence.. Across eight tracks, it moves through symbols and moments of this decline, forming a critical and emotional sonic testimony.”

The most thrilling moments of the album is when Ancestro fully explores their Post-Metal and Atmospheric Sludge identity even further which allows the record to be quite violent within the volume department. As Ancestro lay down some vicious sounds along the way on tracks such as Status Quo, Andante, Wachuma, En Ruinas and Mar desierto. My favourite aspect about thai album is how Ancestro have included their Peruvian heritage into the album as you feel immersed by the culture especially with the different sounds, trippy effects and massive LOW & SLOW environments the band just throw in for good measure. 

I’ve listened to Ancestro’s previous albums but this is by far their heaviest and boldest record to date. This is quite forward thinking with the band touching upon areas of music they haven’t played before. You’ll even experience some classic Eighties Heavy Metal instrumental solos along the way which shows you how the band are always thinking outside the box. 

En Ruinas is an absolute MONSTER of a record and one of the heaviest Doom/Stoner Metal albums I’ve experienced from the South American underground scene in quite some time. Add this one to your collection folks. You won’t regret it. Awesome stuff.

Review

Drone/Doom/Sludge Metal collective Void Sinker leaves the comforting sounds of the ocean that we experienced on their last album and returns to the cold, desolate and harsh realities of the Cosmic Void. Their new album Cycles fully embraces the Drone folklore and mythology with heavy monolithic tones that are quite slow-paced in nature. As before, Void Sinker emits creative themes influenced by the likes of SUNN 0))), BONG and CONAN though sticking closely to their own rules they’ve created with previous albums released under the Void Sinker name.

The record lasts around fifty three minutes and is perhaps Void Sinker’s most sprawling and deliberately slow album to date. The tone is quite monolithic with deep instrumental passages having a dark pretence and essence to them. Sounds have a weighted grounded approach with that burgeoning thick AMPLIFIER sound perfectly tapping into the LOW & SLOW environment with the stunning opening track of Hanged. There is a down-tuned progressive theme which allows creative mastermind Guglielmo Allegro once again explore the bleak Ambient leaning Post-Doom and Post-Metal surroundings that manifests into some nightmarish style of Stoner Metal soundscapes with layers of FUZZ METAL feedback coming at you from all angles.

Void Sinker expertly taps into the Post-Industrial theme on tracks such as Cycle, Isolated and Dreadful that taps into the gloomy theatrics of a classic Science Fiction movie soundtrack such as the “ALIEN” franchise. There is a sublime “HORROR” and “SCIENCE FICTION” element that fully comes into play on tracks such as Cycle and Isolated where I feel that Guglielmo may be inspired by certain soundtracks that he grew up with or was inspired by. The sudden sharpness of the down-tuned and drone energy does move into heavier, faster and aggressive waters along the way with the album having some intense and crisp production values especially with the haunting sound effects appearing in the background.

Cycles can be quite solitary with the sludgy movements of certain instrumental passages and how Guglielmo delivers the whole flow of the album. Sometimes it’s not very subtle but it’s how Void Sinker plays out the musical momentum that pays homage to some real grounded characteristics of the Doom, Drone and Sludge Metal underground scene. With a wonderfully observed psychedelic and kinetic energy developing within the later stages of the album, Void Sinker allows the album to breathe organically especially when the heaviest and droned out sounds appear on the album.

Guglielmo Allegro has got his creative mission statement developed down to a fine art with his “Void Sinker” persona but it’s always great to hear him try new things and fully challenge himself with each album he releases either under his Void Sinker or Nightscape personas. Cycles is a gloomy and highly claustrophobic release that demands your full attention that will surely put you through a punishing regime of intense Drone/Doom Metal once more.

Guglielmo Allegro aka Nightscape returns with another exciting record Sakura which expands his musical philosophy into areas of Shoegaze, Prog, Psych and Post-Rock compared to the previous records that he's released under this creative outfit. The record is perhaps more subdued and is more about the journey than the eventual destination.

The majority of the record is quite “low-key” with small amounts of Post-Stoner energy emitting from behind the scenes with elements of Sludge, Doom and Stoner Metal surroundings only being used quite sparingly. However, the record is still beautifully heavy when it needs to be, which you can feel through different stages on the individual tracks that make up Sakura.

The instrumental passages have a slight Droned Out sound with a haunting Post-Rock and Post-Stoner melody which is captured superbly well within the first two tracks of Mirror Lake and Floating Petals. If you’re a fan of Yawning Man, Pelican, Russian Circles and King Buffalo then Sakura follows that style of music those great bands are known for and then sees Guglielmo do his own thing with quieter and mellow parts of the record. 

Various ambient sounds combine for a progressive cinematic feel that builds up the slow-burning tension and intense melodic passages that allows Nightscape to offer a deeper, personal and philosophical sound you least expect.

The other two tracks of Slow Peach and Clear Wind allow Guglielmo every creative opportunity to build levels of meditative Post-Doom, Psych Rock, Space Rock and Stoner Rock soundscapes with a slightly aggressive sound appearing from time-to-time. There’s also a deeply understated use of Drone and Amplifier Distortion which brings a grounded quality to the whole journey that’s brilliantly euphoric and uplifting before Sakura finishes on a positive message.

Sakura is another standout record from Nightscape where they find new ways of delivering highly original HEAVY sounds of their own making. I’m starting to wonder if Guglielmo Allegro is thinking about playing these songs on the live stage as that would be EPIC to witness or here on the live stage.

This is instrumental music of the highest order and once again proves again why Guglielmo Allegro is one of the best creative minds and voices we have currently within the underground scene.

Review

Fortær is the debut album from Instrumental Post-Metallers MT. SARIN who are influenced by the likes of Pelican, Russian Circles, Telepathy and Kollapse. Their debut album merges with the dense heavy sounds of the American Post-Scene amongst the ice-cold direct progressive melodies of the European Post-Metal scene. This is perhaps a record that showcases the best of both worlds with Fortær having a quite varied and global feel which is quite engaging and highly impactful for the band’s debut album.

MT. SARIN didn't wait for long to develop a thuggish intense sound that’s bursting with a real progressive energy that soon transforms into a slightly distorted direction with traces of Ambient, Post-Rock and Psychedelic surroundings appearing. The songs are quite direct with MT. SARIN perhaps sometimes takes a bit too long in playing the heavier Atmospheric Sludge Metal passages when the record really needs them and that’s my only complaint for such a well constructed and deeply engaging record.

As when MT. SARIN really hit their musical stride, they play a real intense style of Post-Metal that’s bursting with real brawn and intelligence especially when that translates into a classic style of Progressive music with flashes of aggressive Sludge Metal leading the way on the tracks such as ÆT, FORTÆR, MASKERNES NAT and BAKLA. These songs allow MT. SARIN to expand their creative journey into heavier waters such as Blackened Doom and Post-Black Metal which allowed the album to become a more exciting prospect. There’s some intense Ambient trickery developing behind the scenes with faster played melodies and some thrilling beatdowns becoming more commonplace as the album draws to its thrilling climax.

The second half of Fortær has a more unforgiving attitude compared to the first half with MT. SARIN exploring darker and heavier themes whilst still drawing upon some classic Post-Metal themes on tracks such as: DEN, SOM SÅR VIND, HØSTER STORM, PITUFFIK and SYNDFLOD. Sometimes the band use a “LESS IS MORE” approach that reminds me of early PELICAN in places but they add that modern day Blackened Doom energy to the record which gives the album it’s own original, stylish and highly relentless sound of it’s very own. 

Fortær is a highly accomplished record from MT. SARIN to release as their debut album which should gain the band a loyal and dedicated following within the underground Post-Metal scene. If you want an album that pays great respect to the legendary formative  years of the Instrumental Post-Metal scene whilst breaking new ground of their very own then MT. SARIN has delivered the goods here.

Review

Immobilism is the third album from Instrumental Post-Metallers ORGAN where they demonstrate a wealth of intense Doom & Gloom surroundings that manifests into a bleak cinematic style of music drawing upon the likes of PELICAN, RUSSIAN CIRCLES, MASTODON and BONGRIPPER in the most of unexpected of places. With a brooding progressive sound that develops into stripped back soundscapes with small moments of Psychedelic and Kinetic musical energy transforms into a heavier and aggressive sound that comes fully into focus on the excellent opening track of Tenebrism.

There’s a sense of HORROR that you can feel throughout the album and some of the song titles give that impression that allows the listener to fully get accustomed to the dark musical surroundings that ORGAN brings to the party. The music is painfully slow and opaque at the best of the times but the droned out and distorted environment instantly takes hold with violent Ambient textures forming that allows ORGAN to experiment with a more “OUT OF THIS WORLD” sound that becomes quite “LOVECRAFTIAN” in places. The Post-Rock vibes transform into areas of Post-Doom and almost Post-Black Metal atmospherics especially on tracks such as Confessor, Devouring and Dogma delivering some of the most thought-provoking sounds on the whole album.

The album is painfully slow which allows the listener to fully take in the dark progressive themes, melodies and sudden shifts into vast areas of cerebral Post-Metal grooves that leave you questioning your own reality. ORGAN undergo a creative shift on the later stages of the record which allows brief pockets of Stoner Metal, Post-Hardcore and Noise Rock to suddenly appear that gives Immobilism a deeply unpredictable grounded energy. 

Immobilism works best when it merges twisted reality and nightmarish based soundscapes for a record that feels inspired by the films of David Cronenberg, David Lynch and Dario Argento with a free-flowing soundtrack narrative being one of the best aspects that I’ve taken away from the whole album. Every note is played superbly with ORGAN proving what great musicians they actually are especially compared to their outstanding 2018 album Eterno.

ORGAN have delivered a uniquely dark take on the realm of Instrumental Post-Metal that perhaps leaves many questions unanswered but you can’t deny the whole incredible audio and gloomy sonic experience the album fully delivers with real dramatic intent. 

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Collapsing Walls is the third full length from Instrumental Doom/Stoner Metallers Skullpriest where they explore some pretty cool and cosmic based passages within the whole album. The album is forty one minutes long and told across five tracks. Each track is bursting with its own central story that allows Skullpriest to explore some gloomy Post-Rock landscapes which is set against a highly aggressive style of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal, With this being a purely instrumental record, Skullpriest are quite adept at adding areas  of Psych, Space and Ambient sounds into the mix. 

The album can be wholly aggressive one moment and beautifully sedate the next with Skullpriest never afraid to explore their Post-Rock, Post-Metal and Doomed Out themes especially within the excellent tracks of Collapsing Waltz, 15 Bricks and F.U.B.A.R. with a slight musical identity crisis emerging from the more experimental elements that comes across through the whole record. If you dig the likes of PELICAN, Karma To Burn, BELZEBONG and Clouds Taste Satanic then Skullpriest have all those bases covered with the music slightly being quite gritty and progressive along the way.

Skullpriest do play with a free-flowing style of music that becomes almost “JAM ORIENTATED” but this allows the record to become quite eclectic and freakishly heavy in ways you don’t expect especially on 15 Bricks, F.U.B.A.R. and Crumbling Down. Wait till you hear the jazzy and space rock interludes that Skullpriest inject into the mix before applying an Atmospheric Sludge makeover that adds a level of OVER THE TOP crazed attitude to the whole which is quite hard to ignore. 

Collapsing Walls is a superb album and if you’re a longtime fan of the Instrumental Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal scene then I can’t recommend this album highly enough. Just be prepared for Skullpriest to try different things and you’ll have a great time. There’s some highly inventive use of different sonic experimentation which only adds to the whole unique experience that Skullpriest pull off great originality before everything is said and done.
