Review
The Besieger is the debut album by one-man Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal project Voidhammer and I’m going to post the info from the band’s bio page as it tells you all you need to know.
“Biggest influences are High On Fire, Celtic Frost, Asphyx, Conan, Immortal and Electric Wizard. Self defined as Blackened Battle Stoner Doom.”
And that’s what The Besieger is all about. Ferocious grooves, harsh growls and vocals set against an instrumental backdrop of Thrash and Blackened sounds forged in the fires of the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal underground scenes. The record is a perfect musical homage to the bands listed above but also stands on its own creative merits with Lucas Horrohr aka VOIDHAMMER pulling out the stops playing the heaviest and most violent grooves that HIGH ON FIRE and CONAN fans will admire.
The use of psychedelic movements allows the record to be slightly OVER THE TOP and gleefully violent but Lucas has done his homework by blending modern day Sludge/Stoner Metal themes against the old-school brutality of Eighties Heavy Metal. There’s also a heavy Progressive Metal influence that lurks in the background before taking over on the longest tracks on the record such as The Besieger, Slaughterhorn, Warpgate Sentinel and The Siege Of The Grimfrost Keep which all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Celtic Frost and Immortal with Voidhammer still creating their own great take on the genre.
VOIDHAMMER truly comes alive when they fully commit themselves to the CAVEMAN and BATTLE DOOM aspect of their music as the lyrics become more outrageous, violent and brutally efficient with the slow placed mechanics of the music that transforms into a groove oriented style where the best sounds of the album appear.
The Besieger is an action packed record full of extreme vocals and intense melodies where the mood is pitch black and plays like a soundtrack to those classic 1980’s Sword & Sworcery films whilst keeping a modern day creative sensibility within the more epic cinematic parts of the record. The record is helped along by some wonderful production values that allows The Besieger to be highly polished and quite abrasive at the same time. This album feels like it has easily been recorded in the 1980’s Heavy Metal era and being discovered for the first time today.
Voidhammer have pulled out all the stops and have released an absolutely outstanding debut album that could easily see this project become firm favourites within the underground scene in no time at all. The steep price of the album may put some people off but this is a quality sounding record through and through that demands your undivided attention.
