Review
Supernaughty celebrate their signing to Ripple Music with their heaviest and grooviest record to date with the band fully finding the right balance between Stoner Metal grooves and added Sludge Rock heaviness. Their latest record Apocalypso has a certain Doom & Gloom heaviness with a Grunge/Fuzz Rock sound developing that is influenced by the likes of KYUSS, FU MANCHU, LOWRIDER and DOZER. On this form you would think Supernaughty were part of the Californian and Swedish Heavy Rock underground scene as they follow the creative fabrics of those legendary scenes superbly well on this album but still developing and nurturing their own heavy sound.
The record is helped by first rate production values that gives Supernaughty a stylish energy which results in some heavy Psychedelic passages with sinister levels of FUZZ creeping in from your stereo. The instrumental melodies become part of the DOOM METAL world that slowly starts to creep in on the excellent batch of opening tracks such as Poseidon, Witch Mountain and Amsterdamned. The lyrics has a lot of clever wordplay which you can tell by some of the devilishly funny song titles which shows that the band haven’t lost their superb sense of humour even if the music is played quite seriously.
There are moments where the record ventures into areas of NOLA and METALLIC based music and it’s quite a refreshing change of pace with stylish bursts of aggression and melody proving that Supernaughty have matured brilliantly since their last record Temple released back in 2020. The songwriting has more character, depth and shows a band who have a commanding presence to them.
Frontman Angelo Fagni has grown considerably into the lead singer role on Apocalypto and delivers his strongest vocal performance to date especially on tracks such as Amsterdamned, Weird Science, Queen Of Babylon and the excellent final title track of Apocalypto. Angelo is once again surrounded by the Supernaughty brotherhood of Filippo Del Bimbo (Guitar), Alessio Franceschi (Drums) and Luca Raffoni (Bass) who have also improved musically and technically for the better on this record. The evidence is there for everyone to feel and hear with intense and highly precise musical grooves and extended instrumental passages.
Apocalypto still allows Supernaughty to inject a slice of SLEAZY heaviness into the mix which gives the record a more outrageous and dangerous feeling especially when the heavier and fuzzed up sounds appear always at the right moment. This is the type of record that could allow Supernaughty to achieve bigger and better things within the Stoner Metal scene and beyond. With a record packed full of great tracks that any band would be proud to have in their musical arsenal.
Yeah, this is a superbly entertaining record that deserves everyone’s full attention and maximum respect!!!
