Founded in 2019 by Max Malmer and former members of Swedish death metallers, Zonaria, and retro rockers, Gudars Skymning; Sweden’s Cavern Deep has established itself as one of the Scandinavia’s finest new doom metal bands.

Having released their first album in 2021 on the Polish label Interstellar Smoke Records, the band has since formed and issued music under their own Bonebag Records imprint, most recently releasing their latest record, Part II – Breach, to critical acclaim across Europe.

Returning this month for a one-off release, new single ‘The Peeler’ was originally intended to be a bonus track on the band’s forthcoming album. But while all good things come to those who wait, some things are too awesome to not share immediately. For those impatient souls itching for new material from the Umeå trio, this sleeping giant of a track focuses its attention on a lost mythical monster who resides in the deep cavernous realms of a long-lost civilisation. A hideous beast that hypnotises and oozes slime from its jaws, peeling skin from its still-stirring victims, and feeding off them piece by piece.

Towering guitars and drums soundtrack the ensuing chaos and seek to capture the creature using stark riffs and crushing strokes of colossal doom metal. Coupled with fantastic stop motion footage – assembled, and animated by artist, “Bob” – for the single’s visualiser video, ‘The Peeler’ is out now via Bonebag Records – bonebagrecords.com

Review:

Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metallers Cavern Deep return with their new album Part II - Breach is an album that revels within it’s Lovecraftian lore with a more powerful style of Prog Rock that was only hinted briefly on their acclaimed 2021 self titled debut release. This album is more about Psychedelic vibrant energy with a slightly darker style of Mastodon-esque sludgy sounds appearing within the gloomier elements of the record. This is a concept album exploring the Archaeologist's journey who featured on their debut album.

Opening track Breach perhaps takes a Crack The Skye approach but Cavern Deep plays that classic Swedish Doom/Stoner Metal energy that so many great bands have used as well. The music is atmospheric and full of subtle cinematic Psychedelic touches that moves between the finer levels of the Doom/Stoner Metal mythology being played at a great pace. There’s a world-building environment to this album which starts off within this excellent track. Add the epic vocals and Cavern Deep play a subtle style of thrilling Doom/Stoner Metal grooves that retain a haunting energy to them.

Second song Primordial Basin features Susie McMullan of Brume fame who brings an ethereal presence to the album with her delicate vocals that ride the Post-Doom world with touches of Alt Metal imagery behind them. The music from Cavern Deep becomes slightly gothic and more emotional but there’s still epic moments of pure aggressive Doom/Stoner Metal energy even when the music changes into a Post-Metallic sound. 

Third song A World Bereaved opens with Ambient sounds before the fabulous vocals appear allowing Cavern Deep to explore sounds inspired by YOB and Pallbearer. I maybe totally wrong with this one but I can hear a twinge of Type O Negative energy throughout this track. The bleak and nihilistic vision of the lyrics and the stripped back approach of how the music is delivered allows this to be one of the most interesting and standout parts of the album. The music is unapologetically slow and allows the listener to become more aware with the ambient and atmospheric surroundings being played around them. 

Fourth song Skeletal Wastes sees the band team up with Sarcophagus Now member Johannes Behndig for a more theatrical and adventurous ride into the darker realms of Cavern Deep’s creative psyche. The instrumental work is impressive yet again with gloomy guitars and prog metal exploration on the more heavier parts of the track. Things do become more Psychedelic on the second half with Cavern Deep adding trippy glitches and ambient sounds that feels like a different band is playing but allows the band to explore the Cosmic energy further that appeared on their debut release. 

The final two songs Sea Of Rust and The Pulse (feat Susie McMullan) are less theatrical than the other tracks on the album. This time sees Cavern Deep focus upon playing classic sounding Doom Metal grooves with a heavy reliance on Prog Rock/Metal tricks of the trade mostly on Sea Of Rust. I absolutely adored the “QUIET vs LOUD” dynamic of this part of the album. As the band know when to explore the harsher aspects of their music and when to pull things back for a more uplifting and hopeful sound which they do the most on the outstanding final track The Pulse. 

Part II - Breach is a major step-up in quality for Cavern Deep compared to their debut album. As this album has a much deeper and observed creative narrative that allows the band to play haunting and original sounds of their own that brings a fresh adventurous spirit to the Doom/Stoner Metal scene. 

If there is a Part III then it has a lot to live upto. As this album could be Cavern Deep’s most defining release to date. Outstanding. End Of.

Cavern Deep Premiere New Song/Video For A WORLD BEREAVED From Upcoming Album PART II - BREACH

A World Bereaved is the second single of Cavern Deep's upcoming album "Part II - Breach" releasing the 14th of July.

It is the 3rd song on the concept album and its synopsis is as follows:

"No more memories of its earlier existence than glitching, flickering images. Like waking up from distant clouded nightmares. Skin is thin, sore, still growing as it lumbers through desolate landscapes. No signs of life to be seen. The ground is torn by sickly pulsating spirals, shooting up in the thick clouds above. Passing former displays of architectural grandeur; now caved in like hollow skulls. A sense of purpose is shaping inside as it finds its paths through the wasteland."

Cavern Deep release a video for their full debut self-titled concept album. The video is currently streaming via the 666 Mr.Doom YouTube channel and can be viewed below: 

This video is made completely DIY by Cavern Deep. The video contains all of the songs from the new self-titled debut album released on Interstellar Smoke Records with additional content to flesh out the concept of the album.

The album synopsis is as follows:

"The start of the expedition.

One archaeologist and 49 men stand at the gates of a previously unknown civilization, for a moment staring down into the bowels of the mountain before they begin their decent. The journey downwards turn out to be more dangerous than expected, they climb down through whirling stairs lit only by organic fluorescent lights.. Further down the path turns more and more crumbled, eventually they must use ropes to traverse the broken bridges and tunnels over the deep chasms below. Filled by the promise of treasure they continue downwards. Many men go missing as they’re tasked to explore diverting tunnels, they never return and their screams are followed by silence. the only thing found is their safety ropes, driven by greed the archaeologist continues the expedition."

Review

Cavern Deep debut full length album is a primarily a Psychedelic Doom Metal record but the band venture out into other areas of music such as Prog Rock. Stoner Metal and Grunge. This is a concept album with Cavern Deep telling a story about an ill-fated expedition which goes badly wrong. Maybe not the most exciting of stories but Cavern Deep work wonders with the musical journey for this album.

The album does have a deeply rich background to it all that allows Cavern Deep to  play fast and loose with the rules of Prog Rock/Metal but still offering a heavy Psych Doom/Stoner Metal experience. The whole thing can be quite “Spaced Out” despite the story being set in the vast underground caves of Planet Earth.

There are 8 songs here each telling an exciting chapter of the album. There are parts of the album that can be quite dramatic and remind myself of MUSE in many ways. Obviously the heavier and faster moments of the record are a welcome addition (I’m not going to say distraction), and the slower parts bring GRAVITAS and real human emotion to the entire flow of the album.

The vocals also remind myself of Chris Cornell before they drift off into slightly more operatic fare. The lyrics are constantly moving the album forward with Cavern Deep excelling when they play a more meditative style of Psychedelic Doom Metal that mostly appear in the 1st half of the album. Throw in a deep love of 70s Hard Rock and 90s (and onwards) Alternative Metal and sometimes it really is hard to describe Cavern Deep’s overall sound.

Normally I would do a song-by-song review or describe some of the songs on the record but it’s really best just to class this album as one epic song but spliced into individual chapters but if I have to point out my favourite songs on the album then I’ll go with the following:

Abandoned Quarters, Ominous Gardens, Waterways, Leap Of Faith, Fungal Realm and The Dark Place. 

As these songs are where I felt Cavern Deep showed the best creative ideas, vocals and sounds. Maybe not the heaviest but there are a lot of fantastic and bleak heavy grooves to sit through.

The production is first-rate with Cavern Deep offering a deeply atmospheric and rich variety of different styles of music to admire from afar. This is quite different from the usual Doom/Stoner Metal albums we hear and expect from the legendary Swedish scene. 

Cavern Deep's debut album is a challenging, dark, daring and extremely bold album to release for your debut album but at least the band have the BALLS to do something like this and ultimately it’s a record that’s worth every minute of your DAMN time.

Progressive Doom/Stoner Rockers CAVERN DEEP will be releasing their highly anticipated self-titled debut album on July 23rd 2021 through Interstellar Smoke Records.

The album is a highly atmospheric style and journey through different elements of Doom Metal and Stoner Metal that show a deep creative flair from the band that evokes memories of bands past and present but still allowing CAVERN DEEP the opportunity to show their own style of heavy music.
