GRIEVING - Songs For The Weary (Mini Review) & Vinyl Release Details From Interstellar Smoke Records

Mini Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers GRIEVING new album Songs For The Weary is a slightly darker take on the Doom/Stoner Metal sound with a Heavy Occult Rock Twinge. The album moves between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal with GRIEVING showing supreme confidence from start to finish.

The vocals are clean based but with a menacing tone behind them when the album moves fully into the Occult Rock arena. The Gothic Tinged atmosphere allows GRIEVING to create a more satisfying and richer full sound with a dark Psychedelic undertone as well. The music is quite melodic in places but also shows a rather cool Muscular Groove that brings a more meatier and muscular tone especially on the 1st half of the album.

GRIEVING's debut album is a tad too short at under 29 minutes in length. A couple of more songs would have benefited this album greatly but that's my only minor complaint for this album.

Overall, Songs For The Weary is a gutsy adventure into the darker side of Stoner Metal with plenty of Doom Metal attitude to match.

Fantastic stuff.

Review

Slowpoke play a Punk Rock fuelled version of Sludge/Stoner Metal with the band having the good grace to add a twisted Psychedelic Groove to their self-titled debut album. Their record has elements of Progressive Rock and you feel that the band craft an adventurous style of music which can be heard in the excellent opening song Stony Iommi.

The song comes on like a Sludge/Death Rock battalion of heavy riffs with pissed off vocals to match. Slowpoke play around here and even start playing Psych Rock, Prog Rock and Hard Rock in different sections of the song. The song is quite mellow in the later stages and does have a “Post-Doom” flavour with the proggy guitars seeing Slowpoke pay homage to the legendary musician. The song can be too flashy at times but there’s more than enough Sludge/Stoner Metal cool riffs to keep everyone fully on board.

Second song - Slumlord - feels like a song from an entirely different band as this is LO-FI and in your face Sludged Out Punk Rock with fast paced Stoner guitars. The song is punchy and aggressive especially with the death growls that appear along the way.

Third song - Sid The Cat - features Al Yeti Bones who is a fantastic solo musician and lead singer of Gypsy Chief Goliath. The song is a solid Sludge/Stoner Metal song with a blues rock flavour coming into play and is brutally heavy that reminds me of DOWN in many ways. This is one of the best tracks on the album and I can listen to this song all day long. Heavy proggy guitars with a fine “NOLA” attitude being the glue that holds everything together.

The rest of the album sees Slowpoke carry on creating their own blend of Punk fuelled Sludge/Stoner Metal with interesting ideas contained on all of the songs. The album does lose focus at times but Slowpoke have this uncanny ability to play a heavy riff that brings everything back into place and you’re left with a debut album that is packed to the brim of awesome grooves and heavy tunes from start to finish.

The final two songs of Sanctuary and Slowpoke are the best parts of the album. As Slowpoke bring all their best musical ideas on these two songs with the band being CRAZY in all the right places and ending the album on the right musical note.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Exclusive Album Premiere Of SLOWPOKE Debut Full Length Album

Bio:

Slowpoke formed in St John's Newfoundland Canada in 2018 by Ben Chapman-Smith (Bass, Vocals) and Cameron Legge (Guitar). In early 2019 Adam Young (Drums) joined the band. The trio went on to record the bedrock of their upcoming album ‘Slowpoke” and closed the night at Still Heavy’s Midsummer Mayhem 3 festival and were dubbed the “hidden gem of the evening” by Tony Carew owner of Still Heavy.

COVID-19 made live performances a non-option in 2020 so Slowpoke went inside and worked away at their release, and applied for a MusicNL Artist development grant which they received in January 2021. Upon receiving the grant Slowpoke enlisted the services of Rick Hollet at Redhouse Recording (sHeavy, Hey Rosetta!) for Mixing and Chris Keffer at Magnetic North (The Black Keys, Cheap Trick) studios for Mastering. Slowpoke is currently performing in Newfoundland and has an album release show planned at the Rockhouse in St. Johns on August 21st 2021 with The Birchmen and local legends sHeavy.

Album Premiere

You can listen to the album with this cool exclusive album premiere below

The band say this about the album:

"We bequeath to thee, our first album! Thanks to the talents of Rick Hollett and Chris Keffer the end product is something far greater than the DIY project it started as. This entire process was a great learning experience and it’s already got us thinking about how we’re going to approach future material.

Anyway, check the album out! Our songs can be a bit of a trip but just lay back, strap in, and enjoy the ride. The album has some pretty sweet doom moments on it, lots of spicy riffs, some very salty lyrical content, a couple sour notes and some deep rich fuzzy Umami tones. Throw ‘em all in a pot, scream really loud into it frequently for 2 years and you’ve got Slowpoke. Bon Appetit."

Canadian Stoner/Doom Act Slowpoke Release New "Slumlord" Single!

Canadian Doom/Punk/Psychedelic band Slowpoke release the second single - "Slumlord" from their debut self-titled album which previously premiered at The Ripple Effect.

The track can be heard below as well as all other major platforms

Slowpoke adds: “Slumlord is a straight up punk tune with a twist. It was written after an experience Ben Chapman-Smith had with a landlord in St John’s and serves as a cathartic release from all the frustrations of renting from unqualified and opportunistic landlords.”.

Canadian Doom/Punk/Psychedelic band Slowpoke are set to release their debut self titled LP August 22nd 2021. The LP was recorded mixed by Rick Hollett at Redhouse Recording in NL Canada (sHeavy, Hey Rosetta!) and mastered by Chris Keffer (Black Keys, Cheap Trick) at Magnetic North Studio in Utah, USA. Slowpoke adds “It’s been a privilege working with such a talented team. We worked hard on the album and we can’t wait to get it out there.”

Slowpoke’s self-titled debut runs the gamut of heavy genres. It features epic, psychedelic passages that transition to fast punk rock, righteous riffs, fuzz-laden doom and some straight up rock and roll. Slowpoke keeps things interesting with progressive songwriting and by drawing from a wide range of inspiration including bands like Clutch, The Melvins, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath and many more.

In addition, Slowpoke releases a teaser for the album which can be heard here: https://youtu.be/50vJhqX1Pdw

The album will be available on all major platforms August 22nd.

Cavern Deep - S/T (Album Review)

Release Date: July 23rd 2021. Record Label: Interstellar Smoke Records. Format: DD/Vinyl

Cavern Deep - S/T  -  Tracklisting

1.Staring Down

2.Abandoned Quarters

3.Ominous Gardens

4.Waterways

5.Leap of Faith

6.Deeper Grounds

7.Fungal Realm

8.The Dark Place

Review

Cavern Deep debut full length album is a primarily a Psychedelic Doom Metal record but the band venture out into other areas of music such as Prog Rock. Stoner Metal and Grunge. This is a concept album with Cavern Deep telling a story about an ill-fated expedition which goes badly wrong. Maybe not the most exciting of stories but Cavern Deep work wonders with the musical journey for this album.

The album does have a deeply rich background to it all that allows Cavern Deep to  play fast and loose with the rules of Prog Rock/Metal but still offering a heavy Psych Doom/Stoner Metal experience. The whole thing can be quite “Spaced Out” despite the story being set in the vast underground caves of Planet Earth.

There are 8 songs here each telling an exciting chapter of the album. There are parts of the album that can be quite dramatic and remind myself of MUSE in many ways. Obviously the heavier and faster moments of the record are a welcome addition (I’m not going to say distraction), and the slower parts bring GRAVITAS and real human emotion to the entire flow of the album.

The vocals also remind myself of Chris Cornell before they drift off into slightly more operatic fare. The lyrics are constantly moving the album forward with Cavern Deep excelling when they play a more meditative style of Psychedelic Doom Metal that mostly appear in the 1st half of the album. Throw in a deep love of 70s Hard Rock and 90s (and onwards) Alternative Metal and sometimes it really is hard to describe Cavern Deep’s overall sound.

Normally I would do a song-by-song review or describe some of the songs on the record but it’s really best just to class this album as one epic song but spliced into individual chapters but if I have to point out my favourite songs on the album then I’ll go with the following:

Abandoned Quarters, Ominous Gardens, Waterways, Leap Of Faith, Fungal Realm and The Dark Place.

As these songs are where I felt Cavern Deep showed the best creative ideas, vocals and sounds. Maybe not the heaviest but there are a lot of fantastic and bleak heavy grooves to sit through.

The production is first-rate with Cavern Deep offering a deeply atmospheric and rich variety of different styles of music to admire from afar. This is quite different from the usual Doom/Stoner Metal albums we hear and expect from the legendary Swedish scene.

Cavern Deep's debut album is a challenging, dark, daring and extremely bold album to release for your debut album but at least the band have the BALLS to do something like this and ultimately it’s a record that’s worth every minute of your DAMN time.

Words by Steve Howe

The album is being released digitally on July 23rd 2021. The Vinyl will be released Interstellar Smoke Records later this year.

Review

Swedish Psych Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers 10,000 Years made a great impression with the Stoner Metal community with their debut EP released back in Summer 2020. It’s hard grooves matched with almost fantastical lyrics appealed to fans of bands such as High On Fire, Sleep, CONAN, Mastodon and Monolord but with their own impressive style of music shining through.

Fast forward a year later and the band are back with their debut full length album - II. The album is what you would call a concept album. I won’t spoil what the story is but you can check on the album’s BandCamp Page or check out my recent interview with the band here.

10,000 Years open the album up with Descent. A 25 second onslaught of Thrash/Doom grooves that offers a thrilling narrative to open the album with. I wasn’t expecting a heavy and brutal style song especially with the short running time. Imagine early era High On Fire but played at a much faster pace.

Second song - Gargantuan Forest - opens with a more subdued style of music with the antagonists of the story getting used to their wild and varied surroundings. The song is a mixture of Psychedelic vibes with elements of Doom, Sludge, Stoner and Post-Metal appearing but with that “Swedish” trademark style of “Heavy Psychedelic Doom” being the main glue that holds everything together. If you’ve listened to recent albums by Monolord and DOMKRAFT then 10,000 Years offers a similar style but with more “Sci-Fi” influenced lyrics and ideas driving the song home. The vocals are superb with them being quite aggressive from start to finish.

Third song - Spinosaurus - allows 10,000 Years to expand into more Punk based territory with a more vibrant fast-paced style of music that veers almost into the realm of Thrash Metal. The song runs under 4 minutes but remains one of the standout tracks on the album. The lyrics have a bleak sense to them with the music constantly changing from one style of Heavy Rock to the next.

Fourth song - The Mooseriders - is where the band move into Psychedelic Rock/Metal overdrive with a major High On Fire influence leading the way. The song is very multi-layered with its musical structure and the lyrics have been written for this song.

There are 4 songs left on the record and 10,000 Years excel even further on the 2nd half of the album with more bombastic and highly original ideas of their own. As they bring more thrilling ideas to the overall story of the album.

Other great songs on the record include: Angel Eyes, March Of The Ancient Queen and the gloriously epic final song Dark Side Of The Earth.

Each song represents an exciting chapter of the story that 10,000 Years have created for this release, The band are quite daring on this release especially on the later stages of the record where they have to wrap things up and end the story on a satisfactory conclusion.

What’s even more impressive is that this album was recorded over a 3 day period. The album sounds wonderful and is superbly produced. So top marks to everyone who helped make this album.

II is a brilliantly entertaining album and for myself personally, will rank as one of the best debut records of 2021.

Zac Crye - Everything

Review

All The Same is the new EP from Zac Crye who played and recorded everything on this release. This EP is a collection of Psychedelic Stoner Rock tunes with Zac on fine form across the 5 songs held on the release. The music is constantly engaging with a warm sunny attitude from Zac which explores the finer moments of the Stoner Rock genre.

Opening song - All The Same - is what you expect from a title track of the EP with Zac playing a heavy style of music that allows him plenty of opportunity to show off his fine musical skills with the grooves being a taste of Classic Desert/Stoner Rock to the heavier Hard Rock moments. The lyrics and vocals are superbly handled and drive this song to a fine and heavy conclusion,

Second song - Look Out Above - is perhaps the most rebellious track on the EP with Zac writing some spiky based lyrics that gives this song a more mature and grown-up sound. The song does take time to get going but once it does the heavy psychedelic moments become more focused with Zac revelling in his almost “Outlaw” persona I feel he uses for this song. The music is the real highlight here with the Stoner Rock grooves being effortlessly cool from start to finish.

Third song - Roach Weeds - offers a more twisted style of music with an almost “Doom” based distorted sound opening the song before the Desert/Stoner Rock riff appears. This has an early Fu Manchu vibe to it all as Zac once again emits “Desert/Stoner Rock” Outlaw Cool. A song of simple means but one that packs some fine heavy ideas of its own.

The final two songs - Firewater and The Road is where Zac excels the most on this release. As these two songs are more daring, bolder and even darker with some of the creative choices that Zac has made for this part of the EP. The music drifts from Heavy Stoner Rock to one of almost Americana based Doom especially on Firewater. I can detect a slight “Brant Bjork” influence on these two songs and that is no bad thing.

All The Same is a gloriously hip and supremely entertaining release that you can’t help but be swept along with. Awesome stuff….
