Review

Of Men And Myths is the debut album from Spanish Alt-Metal/Doom/Stoner Metallers LAGUNA who specialise in playing grooves influenced by bands such as Alice In Chains, TOOL, Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard. There’s a gloomy heaviness to LAGUNA which perhaps allows the Alt-Metal aspect of their music to fully shine through. The sludgy grooves also have a certain early 2000’s creative aspect which is heard on the first few opening tracks of Dogma Pt I, Of Men And Myths Pt 1 and Paragon.

The industrial blast beats can be quite harsh in places with a subtle Stoner beat moving into areas of Distorted Rock/Metal. There’s a lot of sonic experimentation with LAGUNA giving a more Progressive feeling in the heavier parts of the album. With a free-flowing Psychedelic sound that instantly draws TOOL to mind. Some folks may even notice the slight MATH METAL feeling which works surprisingly well with the Doom/Stoner elements of the album.

The album can be quite unforgiving to casual listeners with LAGUNA fully experimenting with their sound throughout the entire album and even though there are moments of standard Doom Metal, Stoner Metal and Fuzzed Up sounds to keep people dazzled with. The production is quite raw-sounding and offset by heavy industrial sounds that gives Of Men And Myths a despairing quality to it all.

Of Men And Myths is quite an inventive album which stands on it’s own creative merits with LAGUNA playing their own definitive sound on the album with songs such as Dogma Pt II, Dogma Pt III and God In The Machine allowing the band to explore the darker experimental side of Doom/Stoner Metal.
