The band is Nominal Anomaly, a single individual passion project

What Is the genre of music you play?

The genre is difficult to pinpoint. Best I could offer is Grunge Metal, as their is some of that old 90's song structure with blues / rock influence. Some songs blend more into Punk Metal. I'm a conglomeration of the 90's mostly.

Can you give a brief history of the band of how it came together and where it is today?

A buddy and myself had a band of 2 back in the late 90's early 2000s called Ark of Kaos. Never made much more than a demo tape, and ended there as people do. I quit drinking about 3 years ago, got bored with the typical drinking hobbies, and picked the guitar back up after a near 20 year hiatus. Started recording about a year later, and releasing music soon thereafter. Early 2026, released the first full album Swamp after several EP's and singles. Currently working on next year's album. Mostly just studio stuff, but a long term dream would be to play live with a band.

What can people expect from your music?

I try to write the songs with catchy rhythms, grooves, or melodies. It's fun in a metal type of way. The lyrical content is a bit here and there, building an odd background of weird lore, but mostly metaphoric to point at reality and be critical or bring emphasis to something. Swamp itself was built during a time of transition personally, so leans deeper into mental health

Review

Swamp is the debut album from Punk/Grunge/Metal solo artist Nominal Anomaly who play a schizophrenic type of Heavy Rock with a distorted and frenzied underground element holding everything together. The record is most definitely a product of living through the Nineties Rock/Metal scene. The best way to describe what’s in store for you on this record is to read the recent “Introduce Yourselves” feature the band kindly contributed to.

This is quite a hard record to describe but from the Introduce Yourselves article the band state the following how to describe their music.

The overall sound is one of pure mayhem and fucked off carnage with Nominal Anomaly inspired by the likes of PRIMUS and FAITH NO MORE as the record does go into multiple different directions. However, there’s some excellent Post-Grunge and Alt-Rock sounds along the way which reminds me of The Melvins jamming with The Pixies. The vocals are quite hardcore based with outbursts of manic punk energy which could easily be considered as the perfect soundtrack trying to escape from a mental asylum.

However, this brilliantly works with Nominal Anomaly even allowing brutal outbursts ofExtreme Metal and Grind Metal grooves to appear. One moment you’re treated to a vicious blast of Hardcore Punk spliced with Sludge, Thrash and Grind passages before the record transforms into a subtle Heavy Psychedelic and spiky Grunge Rock attitude.

Swamp does feel a bit too long at times but the sheer fun and outrageous creative momentum that’s played here on this record does have a warped sense of humour developing from the very start. The lyrics are completely off the wall and brilliantly surreal which matches the madcap energy the Nineties Metal scene used to throw at an unsuspecting audience back in the day.

The Funk Rock and Prog Metal aspects that appear on the record does become a bit overbearing in places but that won’t stop your enjoyment of this weird, wonderful and violently wacky journey that Nominal Anomaly takes you upon. You could consider an experimental record and there are moments even I don’t know what the fuck is happening but I couldn’t stop listening to this especially on tracks: Headcold, BULLfrog, Carnated, Night Sweats, Oblique Mass Of Foundation, Suits and Therapy.

These tracks are the ones I found the most enjoyment from as Nominal Anomaly does play their heart out on this release and they’re a fantastically talented individual where the music is just so bat-shit crazy and brilliantly original at the same time.

Swamp won’t appeal to everyone but if you’re a fan of the Nineties Rock/Metal scene and not adverse for this album to take you into some pretty unexpected areas of HEAVY METAL then NOMINAL ANOMALY will speak volumes to you.

Review

Uragh are a Progressive Metal band who blend Groove, Metalcore, Alt Metal and Sludge Metal into a highly destructive style of music with their thrilling two track EP - Tempest / Wisp - being my first exposure to the band. The sound is melodic with its highly intricate style of Post-Metal and Thrash beats which allows the listener to be pulled into multiple different directions. The music does have some funkier moments with some great slow paced beatdowns before Uragh focuses on a more aggressive and metallic attitude especially on the thumping opening track Tempest.

The vocals from Craig Murphy have an intense quality and delivery to them with some fantastic hardcore and extreme passages shining through. The rest of the band lay down some fast-paced Heavy Metal sounds that are quintessentially modern throughout. Though, there’s a touch of classical music that appears through the sublime appearance of Anaïs Chareyre-Méjan of Belfast band Domhain who provides a chilling and emotionally charged CELLO performance.

The second track Wisp is a gloomy Post-Rock offering with shades of Gothic and Occult themes with the song mostly being a semi-acoustic track with Anaïs Chareyre-Méjan’s intense cello changing the course of the whole EP and the sultry vocals are just the icing on the cake. This is perhaps suited to fans of Chelsea Wolfe compared to the bombastic and violent opening track but it’s good to see Uragh offering different styles of music with the song ending on a Doom & Gloom note with ambient sounds leading the way.

Tempest / Wisp is a great record for Uragh to broaden their musical and creative horizons with. This may take their fanbase a few moments to fully get accustomed to but it shows that the band are aiming for a different sound for future releases whilst keeping to their core original sound at the same time.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Doom/Shoegaze metallers Truster debut album Creeping Thing is quite a thought provoking and highly emotionally charged record that uses the power of Post-Metal, Shoegaze, Doom and Drone to highlight the experiences that members of the queer community go through especially within their daily lives and even within the HEAVY METAL underground scene. However, the record is also emotionally uplifting throughout despite Truster’s maximum use of Doomgaze and Post-Metal that creates moments of pure chaos and violent soundscapes devouring everything within it’s wake.

Truster are also inspired heavily by the Alt-Rock and Grunge scenes with their music being more potent when it enters that grimy atmosphere. The level of Drone, Fuzz and Distortion that holds everything together is superbly impressive on both a technical and musical level. The haunting vocals from Stacy Burnett are beautifully poetic but also cuts like a knife when the banshee screams come out of nowhere which just hammers the point home on how powerful Creeping Thing actually is. You can tell Stacy is speaking from personal experience when the screams violently shake the listener to their emotional core on track Wretch Collector, She Who Requires Blood Remembers Them and The Fire. 

Those tracks make you aware how socially aware and emotionally devastating the journey that Truster take you upon with compounding Post-Rock/Post-Metal melodies that’s spliced with Shoegaze, Doom and Drone that reminds me of Neurosis, Windhand, Slow Crush, Portishead, Tori Amos and PJ Harvey in equal measure. Sometimes the music is quite hard to describe but that’s a great thing as Truster has a more dangerous element to their musical persona that allows them to take bigger, bolder and fearless risks with their music.

The music is played at a great slow-to-mid pace with the bone-crunching instrumental passages allowing Stacy’s vocals the perfect time to breathe and grow naturally. The Post-Rock/Post-Metal sounds are my favourite aspects of the record from a musical perspective as Truster brings a sense of darkness to their music and when they inject that brooding style of Ambient and Trippy sounds into the mix. Creeping Thing becomes a more sensual experience even when the dominant Sludge Metal grooves reign supreme on tracks such as She Who Requires Blood, The Fire, The Flood and Lest I Tear You to Pieces and There Be None to Deliver which is perhaps my favourite track on the whole album.

One of the strongest aspects of Creeping Thing is how Truster moves between different musical landscapes where it’s emotionally delicate one moment and the next they have the power to destroy whole musical planets with a single note, rhythm or melody. Stacy, Jordan and Kevin are masters of their own musical craft as this is a brilliantly original record which is just earth shattering.

Creeping Thing is an absolute marvel of an album to fully listen to which leaves you a shivering wreck with its brilliantly poetic lyrics and sometimes bleak vision. I’m hopeful that Truster will achieve bigger and better things on this record as they absolutely deserve it. 

WOW. What an experience.

Review

The debut single  DoomsdayHighrise from ZuLe is quite an atmospheric track with many of your favourite bands over the last thirty five years from the Grunge, Sludge and Stoner Metal world. There's a deep love and resonance with the legendary Nineties and Noughties Rock/Metal scene with touches of modern Sonic and Psychedelic aggression.]

There's a rough exterior and musical attitude which feels like Alice In Chains jamming with Deftones for the majority of the track which pushes the band further into areas of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal themes. The vocals from Cpt.Cisco have a certain Grunge exterior to them with shades of Alt-Metal giving them a gritty Post-Metal attitude when the harsh sounds appear.

The thuggish rhythm section has an epic industrial quality with ZuLe using the backdrop of Doomed Out grooves and subtle Prog Metal changes for a song that perhaps promises there is better music to come as the song suddenly ends when things were really getting interesting. 

For a debut single, ZuLe has a lot going for them. One of the main things is their broad appeal to the wider Heavy Metal community as they play a high amount of different sounds which they capture superbly well even within the six minutes runtime of this track.

I'm looking forward to hearing more tracks from the band which they've promised will be coming on a more regular basis. ZuLe has crafted a killer sound that delivers the heavy grooves where it matters most. Check them out when you can.

The Lowdown

ZuLe is a grungy sludge metal band from West Flanders and Ghent, formed in late 2024 from the remains of Darqo. When that monster returned to the depths from which it came, a new entity crawled upward: dark, loud and melodic. The band brings together heavy riffs, sludge, grunge influences and clean vocals into a sound that hangs somewhere between underlying menace and melodic release. Musically, echoes of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Eyehategod, Crowbar, Deftones and Godflesh can be heard, but the main breeding ground for the songs lies elsewhere: in film. Underground classics, filled with obscure atmospheres and slowly building tension.

The band consists of Cpt.Cisco on guitar and vocals, Niek De Vos on guitar, Tjalle Groen on bass and Jonas Delbecke on drums. Its members bring experience from previous bands such as Darqo and Mindstab, but ZuLe is mainly the start of a new chapter. The first songs have been recorded, the video is ready, and debut single DoomsdayHighrise marks the first step in a series of three releases. ZuLe creates dragging, abrasive songs that keep resonating long after the last note fades out.

Canadian Doomgaze Band 'Truster' to Release Full Length Album 'Creeping Thing' on July 10

Canadian doomgaze trio Truster have announced their long-awaited new album, “Creeping Thing”, to be released digitally and on vinyl on July 10. The band has also released a single,“Wretch Collector”, which highlights the album’s crushing yet ethereal sound and devastating lyrics.

 
The listener is welcomed to ‘Creeping Thing’ with found audio of harrowing screams from a mass exorcism event in small town Alberta. Truster encapsulates this intensity throughout the album, where even in moments of quiet restraint, there is a seething desperation that inevitably feeds its way into emphatic fervor.

Blending emotional intensity with cinematic depth, “Paint The Sky” captures the essence of BLOSSOM CULT’s distinctive sonic identity: where crushing riffs, atmospheric textures, orchestral layers, and raw introspection collide in constant tension. As one of the emotional cornerstones of Home, the track explores the fading momentum of youthful idealism as it confronts emotional exhaustion, alienation, and the slow acceptance of a fractured reality.

“‘Paint The Sky’ began as a song about resistance and the urge to break free,” says vocalist and guitarist Janos Romualdo Krusenbaum. “But as it evolved, it became more about the realisation that not every fire keeps burning forever. Doom/Post-Metallers Burial Clouds have gone under some significant lineup changes since their acclaimed 2023 album Last Days Of A Dying World. Only founding members Matt Mitchell (Guitar) and Flynn Hargreaves (Bass) remain from the line-up from that album. Marina Lavelle takes over the position of lead vocalist that offers a start contrast to the last album.

Bryce Ramsay (Guitars) and Tim Iserman (Drums) have joined the band as well which sees the band operate with a more powerful and beautifully dynamic sound. Burial Clouds sophomore album Burn Holy still offers a similar tone to their last album but one that leans quite heavily into the areas of Shoegaze, Post-Rock and Alt Metal with delicate experimental touches dictating the quieter moments of the album.

Opening track Burning The Olive Tree captures a band demonstrating their newly found creative energy which transforms into levels of Doom, Post-Metal, Prog Metal and Atmospheric Sludge surroundings that can be quite folk obsessive especially within how the vocals are delivered at times. However, there’s a menacing and violent quality that appears within Marina’s vocals and the brutal onslaught of down-tuned instrumental sounds that can move into areas of Thrash Metal which was a welcome surprise especially within the excellent second track of Windflower.

Burial Clouds showed influences from the likes of YOB, Mastodon, Alice In Chains and Pallbearer on their last record which you can feel instantly here but there’s a sense of grounded Post-Doom and Gothic realism within this record. Marina’s vocals are beautiful, poetic, violent and even horrifying at times when she delivers brutal screams into the mix. Sometimes you feel that there are multiple vocalists performing on this record as they all have a different flow and identity to each other. So be prepared for some extreme vocals being added along this heavy monolithic journey.

Burial Clouds move into more disturbing levels of Extreme Metal which I’m fully on board for as the record still manages to convey a hugely original style of Post-Doom, Sludge and Post-Metal that makes you questioning your own sanity at times on tracks such as: Ashen Altar, Screaming, Drowning Pacified and Eyes Without Light. However there’s still moments of pure uplifting musical brilliance that feels like it’s coming from a different band but Burial Clouds continuously surprise for the better throughout the album.

The dual vocals are another highlight which showcases a wonderfully constructed “LIGHT vs DARK” aspect to the whole album with intense outbursts of thrash metal beats and sullen Post-Metal movements that leave a lasting impression on the listener. 

Even the production values are top-notch with Burning Clouds engineering, recording and mixing the album themselves. That was a masterful decision for the band to take. As it gives them more control over their own music and it feels like a more personal record compared to their debut album. The band was mastered by the legend that is Brad Boatright at the famed Audiosiege.

Burn Holy is a complex and brilliantly daring album that Burial Clouds should rightly be proud of and one that could establish them even further within the underground scene and beyond.

Review

Argentinian Post-Rock/Post-Stoner Rock collective Tusoc return with their new album Monolito which further expands their own Stoner Rock ideas compared to their 2023 album Éter. The sound is quite Sludge Rock orientated with Tusoc exploring a thrilling Alt Rock identity with a thunderous rhythm section (Fabián Lugones: Bass and Alberto Lugones: Drums) providing some intense Spaced Out dimensions very early on within the stunning tracks of Alud and the blistering three part epic of Peregrino I. Olvido, Peregrino II. Lamento and Peregrino III. Redencion.

These tracks alone allow Tusoc to align themselves closely to the likes of ELDER and WEEDPECKER with that South American flair being quite jazzy and progressively aware throughout. The excellent vocals from Fernando Morelli feels like they are opening the gateway to another dimension with haunting Post-Rock themes being played within the background. 

Guillermo Lambrisca on guitars creates some stellar Post-Stoner and Post-Doom melodies which remind me of Yawning Man in places especially within the quieter, sombre and most reflective parts of the album. Monolito does become more Prog Rock obsessed with how the vocals and instrumental passages slowly build up. However, Tusoc always conjures up some outstanding Space Rock and free flowing Desert Rock interludes which transports the listener into some unknown far out musical vortex.

Some sections of the album do transform into areas of Grunge, Hard Rock and Alt Rock which Tusoc fully embraces on other tracks such as: Tu ley, Rebenque and Volver. The vocals are in Spanish and I can’t comment on that aspect but that shouldn’t stop you enjoying this great album with Tusoc exploring many different musical avenues you least expect. Monolito isn’t afraid to embrace a heavier Stoner Metal sound towards the end but Tusoc always knows when to bring the mood right back and let the Ambient, Post-Rock and Desert Rock themes do the talking. 

Monolito is an absolute gem to be released from the South American Psych/Stoner Rock scene which shows you a different side you might not experience from the mainstream Stoner Rock/Metal scene. The album can be quite low-key but when Tusoc are firing on all cylinders they truly deliver some outstanding aggressive Stoner Rock/Metal sounds of their own making.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

Doomgaze/Stoner Metallers Prophets Of Thwaites return with their crushing new EP Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat which offers two tracks running around thirteen minutes in length. This EP sees the band offer a heavier style of Doom, Psych, and Atmospheric Rock with the band ready to embrace a different sound compared to their previous releases.

The sound is mighty thick with Esma Larabi’s guitars opening musical gateways into the psychedelic landscapes. There’s also a deft touch of nineties Alt Rock and Grunge surroundings starting to emerge within the excellent opening track of A Deadlock with small influences of Alice In Chains, Deftones and Soundgarden starting to form.

Prophets Of Thwaites don’t leave their earlier “Doomgaze” creative energy behind first heard on their previous records as they combine their early sound with a more aggressive and direct tone that transforms into some epic fast-paced instrumental grooves with a richer Stoner Rock/Metal attitude developing. The vocals from Esma are excellent as ever but it’s the music that impressed me the most with the band adding huge chunks of aggressive Hard Rock into the mix. The band have really stepped up their game since their last song Tharlab.

Imagine if WINDHAND decided to go full on Doom/Stoner Metal with shades of THE OBSESSED leading the way then this is the best possible result. Though, Prophets Of Thwaites keep with the “Post-Doom” and “Gothic” outlook with their creative outlook within the lyrics and the slight vibes of Atmospheric Rock that starts to drift into the standout final title track of Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat.

This is where Nico Beemster (Drums) and Ferry Vermeeren (Bass) take their chance to fully shine with a pulsating performance within the rhythm section. It’s quite understated at times where they allow Esma to provide an emotionally charged vocal performance. The music is beautifully intricate and highly volatile with Prophets Of Thwaites delicately moving between all the different musical elements they have at their disposal and construct a highly original style of Post-Doom, Shoegaze and Stoner Metal with real emotional intensity.

Vulnerant Omnes Ultima Necat is another masterful release from Prophets Of Thwaites who are really starting to make waves within the underground Doom/Stoner Metal scene. Their next record can’t come soon enough as I’m really excited to hear what the band come up with next.
