Review
Scottish Post-Metallers Codespeaker offer a more bruising and aggressive encounter with their stunning second album Scavenger. With a determined focus on melody and progressive textures, Codespeaker adhere to a classic style of Post-Metal with haunting Post-Rock soundscapes and lush sounding Ambient deliveries. With fast-paced instrumental passages that combine with the dramatic dualling clean and harsh vocal styles that allows Codespeaker drift into the classic surroundings of Post-Metal such as Cult Of Luna, The Ocean and ISIS whilst you can hear moments of modern bands such as SUMAC.
Scavenger has a thrilling storytelling narrative that’s given an Sludge Metal appeal on the albums opening tracks of Usud, Signum and Rescission. These tracks allow the listener to become accustomed to Codespeaker’s astonishing use of sonic devastation that explodes into a million different pieces of anguish and torment when the brutal grooves appear. However, a sullen Post-Rock vibe is never too far away for a brief moment in time for Codespeaker to slow the mood before upping the “ANTE” by delving even further into the Post-Metal abyss of multilayered sounds and cold hearted storytelling coming into the mix.
There’s a chaotic mix of Sludge Metal surroundings that can be considered Post-Black Metal at times thanks to the epic VOCALS and first rate atmospheric SONIC delivery which becomes the main brutal force Codespeaker use to expand the creative horizon of the whole record.
Songs such as Hecatomb, Enso, Karst and Verte only enhance the DARK and BRUTAL takedowns that Codespeaker employ with a sense of dread whilst keeping with the brilliant, progressive and technical abilities the band bring to the party and creating their own highly addictive style of Post-Metal of their own making. The record is quite passionate and feels brutally real with superb lyrics capturing the emotional essence required for a sublime record such as this.
Scavenger is up there as being one of the best Post-Metal records to arrive from the UK scene in quite some time and I can see why the album is receiving rave reviews across the board. Codespeaker have the potential to become major players within the European Post-Metal scene and achieve greater things in the years to come if they keep delivering classic sounding records such as Scavenger.
