Review

Shi - 死 return with their third full length album Pure Disgust and it’s a heavy assortment of Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal sounds with quite a definitive Experimental edge appearing in certain places. Shi - 死 are at least thinking outside the box with the usual sludgy surroundings we expect from a very cool and well put together album such as. I’m still not fully on board with Trumpets being added to the mix even if it’s played superbly well by guest musician Curt Cummings.

Overall, Pure Disgust is a deliciously heavy bout of aggressive instrumental sounds merged with FUCKED UP distorted and warped melodies. There’s a dash of HARSH GROWLS allowing Shi - 死 to explore a slightly Death/Doom aspect to the music with their deliciously FUZZ driven music being quite Psychedelic and Classic Hard Rock especially on tracks such as Bastard, Dex and Ratway Warrens.

Pure Disgust sees Shi - 死 play music similar to bands such as BONGZILLA, Church Of Misery, WEEDEATER and DOPETHRONE though adding their own experimental twist on the more outlandish parts of the record. For the most part, the sound is most definitely from the underground Sludge/Stoner Metal scene with seedy production values appearing and Shi - 死 playing music that is proudly part of the WEEDIAN scene with dirty grooves that should come with a government health warning.

There’s quite a good use of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal and NOLA appearing though being played mostly behind the filth-ridden STONER melodies and murky waters of the evil DOOMED OUT landscapes with the lyrics being a sinister delight to listen especially with lead vocalist Bael’s persona giving them an extra layer of seediness and demonic heaviness to them.

Other standout tracks include: Ox Goad Blues, The Howl, Pure Disgust, Soon Enough and ZBTC. It’s within these tracks where you begin to notice the band’s passionate style of Blues Rock, Boogie Rock and Southern Metal starting to fully take over. Perhaps a tad more traditional in places with the extra sense of dread starting to form more and more. Shi - 死 always stick to their creative choices with pure conviction and always with a menacing appetite that allows Pure Disgust to be their most brutally entertaining record to date.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
