Review

Instrumental Stoner Metallers Six Months Of Sun awaken from a six year slumber with their new album Creatures which focuses upon legendary mythical and fictional creatures as it’s main creative theme with each song title representing a fabled deadly creature. You have mentions of Zaratan, Shai-Hulud (from DUNE), Gevaudan, Ningin, Jersey Devil and Wendigo listed on the album. The music itself is one of gloomy Psychedelic Stoner Metal sounds influenced by the likes of Karma To Burn, Pelican and Russian CIrcles.

I remember these guys being more associated with the Desert/Stoner Rock scene for their previous albums but they have evolved into a fully formed Progressive unit with elements of Post-Rock, Post-Metal and Sludge Metal appearing within their music. The sound is quite harsh and barren with a cold hearted structure appearing within the instrumental grooves that Six Months Of Sun employ here. The album is quite fast-paced and with a sudden sense of urgency as the music has a subtle metallic energy with heavy amounts of Atmospheric Sludge sounds that responds to the intricate glitchy beats that the band include along the way.

Six Months Of Sun brings the classic sounds of the 90’s Desert/Stoner Rock scene but brings it kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Each track has its own great style of storytelling even despite this being a fully fledged instrumental rock/metal album. One of the standout parts of the record is when Six Months Of Sun focuses primarily on the Post-Metal and Sludge Rock aspect of their music. As everything becomes aggressive with a subtle APOCALYPTIC sound that brings a foreboding sense of darkness to the album especially on tracks such as Gevaudan, Vatnagedda, Jersey Devil and Wendigo.

Six Months Of Sun still manage to find the time to add a sense of abrasive melody to the record without compromising their new found harsh cinematic sound that allows Creatures to become essential listening especially if you’re a dedicated follower of the Instrumental Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
