Review

Primordial Ooze is the latest EP from Psych/Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Cavernous who already released their superb debut album Ancestral Thrones in Feb 2025. The album received a lot of attention from the underground scene and it’s not hard to see why. Cavernous play a down-tuned and aggressively FUZZ METAL style that draws in areas of Psychedelic textures which is AMPED upto the max on this EP.

The EP is two tracks long with the centrepiece being the opening thirteen minutes track Voyage Through Orbs and Valleys. The song is a mixture of long drawn out distorted sludgy guitars and weighty  FUZZ passages that are surrounded by harsh vocals and loads of WEEDIAN REVERB being added for a spicy mix of COSMIC DOOM.

This is the type of music that will appeal to the likes of CONAN, SLEEP, UFOMAMMUT, SLOMATICS and SHRINEBUILDER with how Cavernous explores that heavy DOOMED OUT musical galaxy those great bands continue to conjure up. Though, I do fully appreciate how the band play fast-paced melodies to a more LOW  & SLOW droned out perspective which becomes more violently addictive at the same time.

The final track Dark Apostles may be slightly shorter but that doesn’t stop Cavernous continuing to conjure up WARPED and DISTORTED sludgy guitars but perhaps focused on a leaner, aggressive and direct Space Rock approach compared to the excellent opening track. It’s quite minimalistic with the Electronica beats and haunting Synth Rock/Metal approach. Perhaps more suited to VIDEO GAME SOUNDTRACK territory, this shows how vividly inventive Cavermous can actually become.

Primordial Ooze is an absolute COSMIC TRIP with Cavernous firing on all cylinders which definitely leaves you ultimately fulfilled despite the short runtime of the track.

Excellent Stuff. End Of.
