Review

Proto Doom/Stoner Rockers Gjenferd have just recently released their acclaimed second album Black Smoke Rising and a month later they’re releasing their latest single BLISS which doesn’t even appear on the album. The track itself could have easily appeared anywhere on that great record with Gjenferd employing a classic style of Blues Rock, Hard Rock and Proto-Doom sensibilities with some KICK-ASS organs levelling the musical playing field for the band to impress listeners with.

Maybe, it’s just me but I can easily hear traces of the “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” theme tune appearing from time to time. That could be down to the new medication I’m currently on but that vibe is still there. However, back to serious business, Gjenferd once again feel like they're inspired by the likes of The Who, Led Zepp, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer for this track which is set against some classic Proto-Metal melodies and certain prog rock structures.

The lyrics and vocals are quite “OCCULT ROCK” obsessive once more which was a major part of Black Smoke Rising. Gjenferd plays a very fast-paced and highly aggressive style of music which even allows strands of Post-Stoner and Heavy Psych to appear from time to time. BLISS is an all out assault on the CLASSIC ROCK SENSES with Gjenferd taking a NO HOLDS BARRED approach with their music that should instantly satisfy their fan base until they release some other new material in the near future.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Black Smoke Rising is the second album from Proto-Doomsters Gjenferd who build their music on a huge wave of Seventies Rock and Pure Hard Rock nostalgia. There’s a massive influx of Blues, Psych and Stoner Rock melodies though the band are perhaps inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Blue Oyster Cult with modern day bands such as GHOST and Uncle Acid. There’s less theatrical pomp with Gjenferd who solely focus on Classic Rock romanticism appearing through the lyrics and subtle Progressive sounds that appear throughout.

Opening tracks Crimson Rain and Bound To Fall both do a sterling job in creating the musical boundaries that Gjenferd play on the record. The Blues Rock grooves are the dominant theme within ppening track Crimson Rain with a classic Seventies Rock drive developing that solely relies on Proto-Rock vibes with the great vocals from Vegard Bachmann Strand and Jakob Særvoll adding an extra level of maturity to Gjenferd’s music.

Second song Bound To Fall sees a subtle Post-Doom and Psych Stoner Rock energy starting to emerge before Gjenferd return to their Proto-Doom and Classic Rock ways. The music does become instantly louder and perhaps modern which shows that Gjenferd aren’t afraid to inject that “modern day” sound into their music that mostly comes from the jagged rhythm section and freaky guitars.

The next part of the album sees Gjenferd add areas  of “SPICE” into their music with eras of music combining for a thoroughly original sound with that grounded Blues Rock aspect selling the whole creative vision especially on tracks Black Smoke and Calling Your Name.

The trippy Organs and Keyboards add a subversive style of Occult Rock to become part of the action. This first part of the album is “HEAVY” but I wouldn’t class this as “HEAVY METAL” but one more closely aligned to “HEAVY ROCK” or “DOOM ROCK”. Though, that doesn’t stop Gjenferd pushing their music ever closely to the edge of HEAVY METAL with a fantastic sludgy environment that appears mostly on Black Smoke..

The second half of Black Smoke Rising offers a slightly different musical trajectory with Gjenferd moving into the era of Eighties Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Tracks such as The Thrill, The Silence, Ride On and Like Wildfire combine classic hooks and proto based melodies once more with a truly convincing storytelling aspect that appears through their superb lyrics.

There’s a sudden shift of Prog Rock awareness that continues to develop but Gjenferd always have some mighty fine creative tricks up their sleeves to inject a refreshing style of Classic Rock and current Psychedelic musical swagger within the final two tracks of Ride On and Like Wildfire.

The majority of the tracks on the album are superbly structured with excellent production values giving Black Smoke Rising a refreshing “RETRO” feel that makes you feel this album could have easily been recorded and released anytime over the last 50 years of Heavy Metal whilst still being quintessentially modern.

Black Smoke Rising is a resounding success on every level and if you’re a longtime fan or dedicated follower of Classic Hard Rock records then Gjenferd will no doubt impress the HELL OUT OF YOU!!!.

Doom/Stoner Rockers Gjenferd return with another high octane slice of Rock and Roll that follows the same path as their previous single Crimson Rain with the band adding a Classic Rock touch. The previous single touched upon areas of Proto-Metal and Seventies Hard Rock, this time round there are progressive flourishes with the band sounding they take influence from the likes of Orchid, Black Sabbath and The Who.

The song has a very cool slow paced contemporary sound which allows the excellent vocals firmly leave a mark set against the gloomy Occult sounding synths. Gjenferd offer a more confident and aggressive song compared to Crimson Rain with the Doom/Stoner Rock elements fully taking control even when the band play a mammoth style of Classic Rock instrumental sounds especially with the groovy guitars.

The Thrill is a much more riff-centric offering which bodes well for the band’s upcoming new album Black Smoke Rising. If you want a Proto-Metal/Stoner Rock band that gets straight down to business and doesn’t waste any time in delivering the good stuff then GJENFERD are the band for you.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Doom/Stoner Rockers GJENFERD latest single Crimson Rain is the single from their forthcoming album Black Smoke Rising where the band apply a classic Seventies style of Hard Rock, Proto-Metal and Prog Rock. Inspired by the likes of Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple and dare I say GHOST at times. There’s a great sense of Blues Rock and Occult Rock vibes with those sublime Organs setting the scene that steals the show by adding a creepy feeling along the way.

You can hear an essence of Black Sabbath along the way but also moments of Eighties Hard Rock and Nineties Stoner Rock attitude. The vocals are provided by multiple members of the band who are all trying for complete vocal control and it works especially within the more melodic Blues Rock dominated movements of the song.

If you’re looking for a cool slice of superbly played Doom/Stoner Rock that has a quality “VINTAGE” flow with a modern day free-flowing instrumental attitude then Crimson Rain is the track for you. This also wonderfully shows how the rest of the upcoming new album plays out with a few surprises along the way.

Review

How does one go about choosing their album of the year? Do you whittle your list down at the last minute? Do you stress over the thought of picking between album number one vs album number two? Well not me, I usually know when I hear the album that it is something special. Last year it was DeWolff’s ‘Love, Death and In Between’, an album I found quite refreshing and original with its take on 70’s rock and soul. In 2022 my mind was blown away with the progressive rock classic from Birth, easily album of the year for me. In 2020 I heard the debut album from Kryptograf, without a doubt, top slot. Which leads me to my pick for this year.

I did the time jump and mentioned Kryptograf because there’s a connection to my pick for 2024. This year for me it is Gjenferd with their self-titled release. Upon first hearing this album I was very much suspicious of the singer sounding quite familiarly like the singer from Kryptograf. I even posted a blurb on Gjenferd’s Bandcamp that states “Imagine fellow Norwegians Kryptograf but with heavy keys.” Turns out my suspicions were valid; it is in fact Vegard Bachmann Strand on guitar and vocals. Joined by Jakob Saervoll on keys/vocals, Samuel Robson Gardner on bass, and Hans Uhre on drums, and what a glorious ‘noise’ they create!

Gjenferd weave their magic through six rockin’ tracks of Hammond organ wizardry, thick guitars, endless groove, and vocal harmonies, all the while showing their outstanding musicianship and skill in songwriting. Blending prog, 70’s rock, and proto-metal with modern heavy psych and stoner-doom it’s a combination of sounds that Gjenferd has nailed, accomplishing something truly special. It’s a fresh take on what can be done, a step up from some of the ordinary sometimes staleness within the scene. Though the album may take inspiration from various outlets, it’s never recycled or uninspired, but rather a glowing beacon of originality.

Gjenferd kicks things off with the rock anthem ‘High Octane’ which puts audio to the visual of the album cover, a careless free spirit riding the open road with unavoidable death breathing down your neck. It really has that feeling to it, and when the Hammond organ kicks in from the count off you are completely held hostage by it through the entirety of the song. Not that new music can’t have an organ in it, but with Gjenferd it brings a certain vintage aspect to the ensemble.

The Stoner-Doom infused ‘Starless’ introduces the infatuating dual vocal harmonies that are flawlessly executed on this slower tempo track. In fact, the vocals are one of the stars of the album. Their weight is heavy, the gravity of them pulls you in and soon you’ll be singing ‘The city’s crumbling, oh can’t you see? The sky is starless, to me...’

Gjenferd blends proto-metal guitar riffs with classic rock styled melodies with ease. Just as ‘Starless’ did before, ‘Burning Soil’ is another track where the vocals take center stage. Feelings of despair and longing are delivered through a wistful chorus of emotions. Great songs create great albums, a simple concept in theory, though this group of Norwegians take such knowledge pushing it even further with their song-smithing and artistry.

‘Restless Nights’ starts off in an Uncle Acid manner before shifting into a Moody Blues styled 70’s rock progression. Take note of the exceptionally fluid bass guitar, it’s constantly in motion and as the volume lowers on the verses, it becomes a real highlight and point of focus.

The track ‘Beneath the Wave’ sounds as such, with a heavy underwater effect on the vocals. Like a storm coming to fruition the song eerily builds adding layer by layer, instrument by instrument. The pinnacle point being a flurry of keys followed by a tempest of notes in the form of a raging guitar solo.

The funkiest song on the album without a doubt is ‘All That Remain is Haze’, with the locked in groove between the bass and drums in a rhythmic union driving the course. Even as the song goes into a long winding bridge filled with keys and guitar, the rhythm section holds it all together. It all comes crashing back down to the captivating chorus, that, as you should know by now, Gjenferd are experts at.

Gjenferd fulfills what any album of the year should, a major re-playability factor, gratification to the listener, and ticking all the boxes of this guy’s personal tastes.
