Formed in Stavanger, Norway in 2012, KAL-EL established as a unique force in the international stoner and doom metal community by blending hard rock, heavy metal, psychedelic, and doom elements with science fiction themes. Their journey began with the release of "Dark Moon Voyage" EP in 2013, quickly gaining recognition as the top new rock act on NRK Urørt, Norway's platform for emerging music. The band's evolution has seen them release multiple acclaimed albums through various labels, including their debut "Pakal" (2014, Wormhole Death Records), "Ecosphere" (2015, Setalight Records), "Astrodoomeda" (2017, Argonauta Records), and the breakthrough "Witches of Mars" (2019). 2021's "Dark Majesty" through Majestic Mountain Records marked a significant milestone in their cosmic journey, followed by 2023's "Moon People" EP.

KAL-EL's signature sound, characterized by bass-heavy grooves, downtuned guitars, and mind-expanding lyrics, is deeply rooted in the sci-fi narratives penned by vocalist "The Captain" himself. Having toured extensively across Europe and the United States, they continue to push genre boundaries while maintaining their commitment to vintage sci-fi aesthetics and thundering stoner metal.

Review

Stoner Metal Heavyweights KAL-EL return with the blistering second part to the Astral Voyager saga with a record originally titled Astral Voyager Vol 2. Nothing much has changed since Vol 1 with KAL-EL playing their highly addictive style of Doom, Psych, Space Rock, Sludge and Stoner Metal grooves. The record does allow KAL-EL to inject some mellow Post-Stoner melodies along the way with lead vocalist Captain’s undeniable vocals steadying the ship or SPACESHIP as we say.

There’s an extra level of Desert Rock detail which is more amplified compared to their previous album which comes across quite quickly and most significantly within the excellent opening track Juno. The band are in full on  SPACED OUT ROCK EXPLORER mode with the constant shift moving between Heavy Psych, Cosmic Doom and Stoner Metal soundscapes. You can hear echoes of Grunge forming behind the scenes with KAL-EL taking a cerebral approach with the main storyline of the whole album.

KAL-EL demonstrate a destructive fuzzed up SLUDGE METAL attitude within the second track of The Nine which pushes the band into heavier waters with surprising results whilst keeping their core STONER sound. The production values are off the scale that easily matches Vol 1 with both albums being the perfect counterbalance to each other. Sometimes the music can be quite slow-paced which allows the listener to take everything as there is a lot going on within the whole musical journey which continues throughout the whole album.

Astral Voyager Vol. 2 is superbly melodic and once again sees KAL-EL demonstrating why they’re such a force to be reckoned with especially on tracks such as The Prophecy, Juggernaut and Asteroid which are my favourite parts of the album. The music is constantly engaging, emotionally satisfying and most importantly, the RIFFS are out of this world.

The most interesting dynamic is KAL-EL’s great use of trippy sound effects which they’ve used throughout their entire existence but this time round, they have real importance into how the story of the album fully plays out. This keeps the record quite grounded and allows the other members of the band to play some outstanding musical passages of their own making like they did on the previous album.

It was probably a great decision from KAL-EL to release these albums as two separate volumes as they wouldn’t have had the same lasting impact if they were released together. This means you can judge each album on its own merits. The hardest part I have to admit I prefer Astral Voyager Vol. 1 slightly to Vol. 2. However, this is still an outstanding album of the highest order which will no doubt rank as one of the standout Stoner Rock/Metal albums of the year.

KAL-EL are one of the greatest STONER METAL bands the scene currently has now. As every album they’ve released can be considered classics and this will be no different with the whole Astral Voyager saga.

Play this album LOUD when you get the chance. You won’t be disappointed!!!.

Cosmic Heavy Rock Champions KAL-EL announce new album "Astral Voyager Vol. 2" on Majestic Mountain Records & Blues Funeral Recordings

Norway's cosmic heavy rock powerhouse KAL-EL returns with their anticipated new album "Astral Voyager Vol. 2" this spring on Majestic Mountain Records and Blues Funeral Recordings and blast the debut single and video for "Juno" today.

Watch Kal-El's epic new video "Juno" below:

KAL-EL return with "Astral Voyager Vol. 2", the sequel to the most critically-acclaimed and eminently listenable album in their catalog. The continuation of a multi-dimensional journey, "Astral Voyager Vol. 2" picks up with interstellar bounty hunter Mica evading pursuit by The Nine as she traverses time and space to bring in her marks. An infectious blast of sci-fi metal and soaring desert anthems, this is a record about the dangers of manipulation and struggling for individuality against the unseen powers who try to keep us compliant and controlled.

Metal Hammer Magazine called "Astral Voyager Vol. 1" “a six-track sermon of fuzzed-out gravity” while Witching Buzz said, “Kal-El don't just gaze at the stars; they chart them” and Slightly Fuzzed proclaimed the album “a must-hear for stoner rock disciples and cosmic doom wanderers alike”.

On the heels of their first full US tour, KAL-EL welcome us back to the Astral Voyager universe with "Astral Voyager Vol. 2", the second half of their epic riff-exploration to the farthest reaches of the galaxy!

Review

Astral Voyager Vol. 1 is the new cosmic adventure from the legendary Stoner Metallers KAL-EL who solidify their status as one of European scene’s most electrifying bands currently within the scene working today. Their new album sees the band continue their creative journey heard on 2021’s landmark record Dark Majesty which saw the band achieve a new level of heaviness. This time round KAL-EL opt for a classic style of Space Rock, Fuzz Rock and Post-Doom heaviness whilst keeping within the classic sounds of Stoner Metal that easily allows the band to be ranked alongside the greats such as LOWRIDER, MONSTER MAGNET, and TRUCKFIGHTERS.

However, KAL-EL never rest on their laurels with the band trying new things on Astral Voyager Vol. 1 especially with the overlapping vocals from Captain who once again is fine spaced out form. The music itself weaves between slightly distorted areas of Fuzz, Cosmic and Space Rock surroundings with a tendency for Prog Rock passages with a well planned and brilliantly executed story being delivered across six tracks for a fast-paced adventure that delves right into KAL-EL sonic folklore.

The opening track Astral Voyager propels KAL-EL to new heights and if these guys were around in the legendary 1990’s Stoner Metal scene then this album would have easily been considered one of the genre’s defining releases and this track proves that theory. The song runs for almost ten minutes with grizzled Psychedelic textures with an eerie Post-Rock / Post-Stoner  vision forming very early on. KAL-EL adds moments of COSMIC noises and trippy sound effects with surreal noises being played in the background. Though, it’s the undeniable instrumental grooves that make you aware that you’re listening to a KAL-EL record with their highly recognisable melodic style bringing a “TAKE NO PRISONERS” mentality throughout the track.

Second B.T.D.S.C. is classic KAL-EL through and through with sludgy aggressive guitars and a stunning rhythm section allowing Captain the perfect time and opportunity to put in a commanding vocal performance with soaring rhythms and catchy melodies. The music is always muscular and quite COCKY at times which allows the heaviest and catchiest riffs to shine right through. KAL-EL sell the full Space Rock musical adventure on this track alone as it’s quite an easy song to remember and immerse yourselves with. I’m happy to admit I was singing along and headbanging along in no time at all to this track on multiple occasions. Though, the heavy and jagged guitars from Josh and Doffy will delight OLD SCHOOL METALHEADS for the sheer bravado their solos bring on this track alone.

Third track Void Cleaner is where KAL-EL are slightly meaner and heavier with their music as things take a darker turn with heavier grooves and a dominant Sludge Rock sound developing courtesy of the sublime rhythm section work from Bjudas on Drums and Knutsen respectively. There is also a wonderful tongue in cheek approach with the lyrics inspired by the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek and FU MANCHU but still being quite original with KAL-EL firing on all cylinders. Heavy pounding FUZZ ROCK sounds and a classic AMPLIFIER based swagger is quite volatile on the senses but always ultimately highly rewarding to listen to.

I’m not going to do an in-depth analysis of the final three tracks as I think I may have spoiled too much already. However, KAL-EL switched things up a bit with lush sounding melodies and Post-Rock based harmonies especially within the opening moments of the exquisite fourth track Cloud Walker. KAL-EL allow themselves the opportunity to step back from the heavy STONER world and play music that will delight fans of KING BUFFALO but with moments of heavy Stoner Rock/Metal attitude never being too far behind.

The final two tracks of Dilithium and Cosmic Sailor allow KAL-EL the perfect opportunity to return to their highly volatile Psych/Space/Stoner Metal world with the heaviest and trippiest moments being played on these tracks alone. They end Astral Voyager Vol. 1 on a thrilling and highly spectacular conclusion where I’m already counting down the days waiting for Vol. 2 to be released.

KAL-EL always deliver the goods on the production side of things and Astral Voyager Vol. 1 doesn’t disappoint with this being one of their heaviest and most distorted records released to date. Once again, KAL-EL have released one of the most important and potentially standout Stoner Metal records of the year.

Heavy Cosmic Rockers KAL-EL share new single/video Cloud Walker From Upcoming New Album "Astral Voyager Vol. 1"

Norway's cosmic heavy riffers KAL-EL present a towering new excerpt and visualizer off their anticipated new album "Astral Voyager Vol. 1", to be issued on May 16th through Majestic Mountain Records (Europe) and Blues Funeral Recordings (North America).

Rising from Stavanger's frozen wastelands, KAL-EL are set to return with "Astral Voyager Vol. 1", the first chapter of an ambitious double-album assault to tear through space and time. Their new single "Cloud Walker" bursts in at full blast as a towering and starfaring doom-laden statement from the cosmic quintet: "This song is about getting to the next level, having hope and reaching your goals in life, as well as bringing that good energy to eternity. Although somewhat different from what you might expect from us, it is most definitely a KAL-EL tune: heavy as hell, but also melodic and tender as morning dew."

Take off with Kal-El's new video "Cloud Walker" at this location + listen to the single on all streaming platforms

Summer and fall 2024 saw the crew locked in at Bridge Burner Studios, building on the momentum of their latest two offerings "Moon People" and "Dark Majesty". The Captain's distinctive soaring vocals cut through walls of distortion while Josh and Doffy's guitars weave between crushing heaviness and infectious earworm melodies. Down in the engine room, Bjudas's martial drumming and Knutsen's earth-shaking bass keep the vessel on course at all times.

The title track opens in low and slow heaviness, carrying a pinch of melancholia before debut single "B.T.D.S.C." ignites with what KAL-EL calls "pure rocket-fueled, fuzz-infected scandi-stoner" power. The journey winds through tougher tempos and headbanging chaos, hitting ethereal zones where overdriven guitars pierce the stratosphere. There's contagious energy here — stoned cosmonaut blues giving way to seventh-heaven solos. A must-have for fans of Dozer, Domkraft, Truckfighters and Monster Magnet, KAL-EL are ready to melt minds across the galaxy with six tracks of pure sci-fi stoner fuzz.
