Review

Italian Psych/Fuzz/Doomsters King Potenaz returns with Arcane Desert Rituals Vol .1 which once again explores the heavy down-tuned and fuzzed up waters of Doom and Stoner Metal. The influences ranging from Black Sabbath, SLEEP, Electric Wizard and KYUSS are once again included but this time round King Potenaz delves further and heavier into the Occult Metal aspect of their sound. There’s a sense of modern day viciousness heard within the Guiseppe Guarini’s majestic raw sounding vocals which becomes quite Electric Wizard obsessive towards the end with flashes of modern day Stoner Rock surroundings before the album is finished.

With a pure DOOMED OUT essence of Seventies Proto-Metal that’s built around a heavier Sludge Metal backdrop where the music is dramatically different with the production values and recording techniques compared to their 2023 acclaimed debut album Ghost Rider. There is a sense of Classic Hard Rock melody that merges with the gloomy synths that drummer Piero Schiavone provides superbly well especially within the closing stages of the epic opening track Rivers Of Death.

Rivers Of Death perfectly captures the SONIC and PSYCHEDELIC essence of King Potenaz at their creative peak where they conjure up DEVILISH grooves and trippy DISTORTED landscapes to build upon their WEEDIAN narrative. The music is played at a perfect slow-to-mid pace which becomes more atmospheric as time passes by.

King Potenaz aims for pure AMPLIFIER heaviness on the second track The Empty Hand Pt.1 which reminds me of fellow underground doomsters Acid Mammoth in many ways. This track has a wicked sense of Psychedelic deception with the gloomy synths and Shamanic Acid Rock vibes projected from Guiseppe’s vocals and pounding rhythm section courtesy of Francesco Pensato on Bass and Piero Schiavone on Drums. The band include a classic style of GRUNGE to appear and merge with the distorted Sludge Rock elements for a track that has a timeless feel to it all. Long drawn out DESERT ROCK sounds converge with the sudden shift of Fuzzy Stoner Metal urgency with an APOCALYPTIC quality showing through the lyrics.

Three of the four tracks contained here run between ten minutes to thirteen minutes in length with King Potenaz honing their creative and progressive skills with sublime moments of pure LOW & SLOW heaviness which is completely stripped back allowing the music to offer the listener plentiful moments to ROCK OUT and LOSE THEMSELVES in.

Third track Sabbatum Sanctum is the more OCCULT based track with King Potenaz incorporating a surreal vision to their music which results in DISTORTED PARANOIA with how the music is delivered. The guest vocals from Jana Maista (Bass/Vocals from MATER INFECTA) is a great touch with the song becoming quite surreal which instantly reminds me of a classic Alexander Jodorowsky film. The song is perhaps the most frightening and droned out part of the record which is also my favourite track from the band to date.

The final track of Ariadne, The Serpent Witch once again sees Jana Maista provide exquisite vocals once more with King Potenaz fully committed to their Drone Metal persona with slowly played instrumental notes and long drawn out passages which has vibes of SUNN 0))) and BONG at times.

However, King Potenaz settled for their trademark Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal grooves. Add a sense of world weary and gloomy Post-Rock based synths that creates a desolate world that becomes more destructive when the full-on and aggressive WEEDIAN melodies appear. Though the track can be too long in places running nearly fourteen minutes in length, the overall journey makes this the other standout track on the album.

Arcane Desert Rituals Vol. 1 is boosted by the immense talents of Marc Urselli who mixed and mastered the record. Marc Urselli released the fantastic Ramones Redux and SteppenDoom projects recently to great acclaim within the Stoner Metal underground scene. He’s done a great job here by providing a raw aesthetic for the band to entice new listeners with. Credit must also goto Stefano Manca who recorded this great album and keeps everything real and grounded with how he captured the band at their most primal.

This is also another first class release from Majestic Mountain Recordings who are now becoming one of the most important labels the scene has to offer next to the other great labels of the scene.

However, this is King Potenaz's chance to shine where they have delivered a record of outstanding quality that leaves their debut album in the dust with more sinister, heavier, exciting and pulse-pounding grooves that demand your complete and full undivided attention.

King Potenaz - Italian Power Trio Sign to Majestic Mountain Records & Drop New Video For "Rivers of Death"

Southern Italy’s riff-wielding power trio King Potenaz have officially signed to Majestic Mountain Records for the release of their highly anticipated sophomore album Arcane Desert Rituals Vol. 1, due out June 27th, 2025 on both vinyl and digital formats.

To mark the occasion, the band has just unleashed their blistering new single and video for “Rivers of Death”, a 10-minute descent into fuzzy doom, psychedelic dread, and scorched-earth riff worship.

“We’re back with a vengeance, unleashing our long-awaited second album, Arcane Desert Rituals Vol. 1! Says the band. "This is our heaviest, most intense work yet — a sonic onslaught that’ll blow your mind. We can’t wait for you to crank it up and dive into the chaos!”

With a sound steeped in the grimy tradition of Electric Wizard, Sleep, and Monster Magnet, King Potenaz blend occult doom, stoner fuzz, and eerie psychedelia into a swirling ritual of sound. “Rivers of Death” is the perfect first taste of what’s to come: hypnotic, devastating, and weird in all the right ways.

You can read my review from this link or an extract from below:

"King Potenaz new album Goat Rider has all the right ingredients for a stone cold classic Doom/Stoner Metal album which draws upon bands such as Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, KYUSS, Monster Magnet and SLEEP but with a slightly aggressive Occult Metal sound. The album is filled with passionate vocals that do feel inspired by Dave Wyndorf in places with the gloomy atmospherics and FUZZED UP grooves allowing King Potenaz play a sound that's both classic sounding and superbly modern at the same time.

The dramatic use of Psychedelic Sounds has an eerie 1970's attitude with the 1990's based Stoner Metal approach. The band add a Post-Doom element to their sound which translates into Spaced Out vibes on the more quieter and restrained parts of the album.

Goat Rider benefits from excellent production values which marries the different sounds and themes perfectly that King Potenaz has created for this album. With Italian Powerhouse Label Argonauta Records releasing this album, this allows the record to be first rate and must have release from the Italian Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

King Potenaz have delivered the goods with Goat Rider and should allow the band to build up a formidable reputation within the Doom/Stoner Metal underground scene. Don't be surprised if you see Goat Rider claiming multiple accolades on Best Albums Of 2023 lists before the year is out. This is seriously that good. "

Goat Rider will be available to buy on CD/DD/Vinyl via Argonauta Records from Friday 28th April 2023.

Review

King Potenaz new album Goat Rider has all the right ingredients for a stone cold classic Doom/Stoner Metal album which draws upon bands such as Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, KYUSS, Monster Magnet and SLEEP but with a slightly aggressive Occult Metal sound.

Opening tracks Across The Ruins and Pyramids Planet leaves no stone unturned by bringing a holistic style of WEEDIAN sounds that can be quite melodic and downright aggressive which comes into play mostly on Pyramids Planet. Heavy droned out textures allows King Potenaz to adopt a more FUZZIER style of music that leads to some impressive extended sludgy jams. The Occult Rock/Metal nature of the album is quite abstract within Across The Ruins but comes more into focus on Pyramids Planet.

The vocals are quite dramatic but feel part of the Doom/Stoner Metal hierarchy with the music moving at a cool engaging pace. The instrumental work varies from different time frames of the WEEDIAN genre but becomes more modern when the swirling Psychedelic Atmospherics appear. Italian Doom/Stoner Metal bands always add a grittier style to their music and King Potenaz are no different with the band moving further into AMPLIFIER DISTORTION territory.

King Potenaz keep up the breakneck speed of guitar reverb and spaced out grooves on tracks such as Goat Ride and Pazuzu (3.33)  Cosmic Voyagers is more of a Post-Rock instrumental affair which takes a "Less Is More" approach for a different sound from the band. Consistency is key for this album and King Potenaz go into overdrive on Goat Rider and Pazuzu being some of the standout tracks of the album. The vocals have a more classical feel at times but the music is inspired by KYUSS and Monster Magnet here. It's quite a dramatic shift but showcases that King Potenaz is not afraid to experiment with their music. The FUZZ grooves are slightly more down-tuned but the record still moves along at a cracking pace.

The final third of the album allows King Potenaz to play the gloomiest and fuzziest parts of the album. You could say it takes a more Occult and Drone based route on the remaining three tracks of: Moriendoom (La ballata di ippolita oderisi), Monolithic and Dancing Plague. However, the instrumental work constantly remains part of the Doom/Stoner Metal world but with perhaps more reliance on Cosmic based Sonic exploration.
