Review
Calling
The Quarters is the new album from Psychedelic Stoner Rockers
Lacertilia who are firing on all cylinders from the start with their
blend of Stoner Rock/Metal taking influence from Hawkwind and Monster
Magnet with a straight Punk Rock attitude. The album is quite intense
and experimental in all the right places and feels like the type of
album that Monster Magnet used to make in their 90s heyday.
Matthew
Fry’s vocals are highly reminiscent of Dave Wyndorf vocal delivery
even right down to the high pitched vocals that Fry employs for the
majority of this album. Though, that’s not say Lacertilia are not
forging their own creative sound. As they do many times on the album
with a heavy stylish Punk Rock vibe merging quite nicely and heavily
with the Psychedelic Stoner Rock grooves that even have a Progressive
and Prophetic vibe to them.
The
instrumental work on Calling The Quarters is always engaging and
sounds excellent from start to finish with the band showing a fine
talent for channelling 70s Psychedelia and Spaced Out Rock.
Lacertilia like to experiment with many different Ambient and Cosmic
based sounds for a more aggressive style of music.
The opening few songs of “Cloak And Daggers” and Labyrinth both contain that classic “Monster Magnet” vibe and that’s no bad thing. Just expect a more Punk Rock attitude being thrown from almost every direction but it’s the Psychedelic Interludes that make the songs standout and let Lacertilia become more confident and create their own great style of music to impress everyone with.
The
heavy guitars from Mike and Lucas and Bass and Drums from Ed and Tom,
are always moving the music along at such a fast pace that it’s
quite easy to become sometimes lost by the epic riffs the guys
provide. As there is so much different going on with the whole album
and that’s what I admire the most about Lacertilia and the album in
general. The music is always constantly evolving and changing for a
more thrilling and violent sound.
Other
great songs to check out are: Furthur, At The Edge Of Utopia and So
Make It Be. As these contain perhaps the wildest and heaviest riffs
on the entire album.
Calling
The Quarters is an excellent album from Lacertilia to return with
after a 4 year absence. If you’re looking an album that has classic
Stoner Metal riffs you can shake your fists at then this is the place
to be. Let the guys at Lacertilia be your guide into a more daring,
aggressive and adventurous style of Psychedelic Stoner Metal but with
streetwise Punk Rock attitude to match.
Excellent and Highly Recommended.
