Review

The idea behind the Women Of Doom album was a simple one and one with good reason that is explained below:

Women of Doom is a project created to highlight, recognize and celebrate the impact of female artists on all things heavy.

A collaborative compilation album presented on classic black and limited edition vinyl, CD, and digital formats, Women of Doom features all-new original songs from a mind blowing assemblage of bad ass female artists whose creativity and heaviness has been blowing our minds and our speakers for years.

The album features some of the most well-known kick-ass female artists within the Doom and Stoner Metal scene and this album celebrates their undeniable talent with 10 tracks that reach the Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal spectrum.

The music found on the Women Of Doom is perhaps not as heavy as you would expect with the songs being more reflective and emotional in places. Though there are some heavy sounds waiting to be found on this album.

The standout songs for myself personally are the ones by Amy Tung Barrysmith, Frayle, Doomstress Alexis and the double-header of Royal Thunder’s Mlny Parsonz. As these songs had a more emotional connection to myself and I’m a huge fan and admirer of those artists work.

Though the other artists deserve credit for bringing a more emotional sound to the standard Doom and Stoner Metal scene. Nearly all of the songs are quite different to each other with a different style of Doom Metal/Stoner Rock allowing the album to become quite varied and daring in some places.

Perhaps one of the most exciting things about this album is to see the new musical projects (The Otollith and The Keening) that came from Doom/Sludge Metal heavyweights – SUBROSA. Both artists offer gloomy Post-Rock/Post-Doom compositions which is a different style of music to Subrosa and made myself to investigate both of these bands further.

Overall, this is a damn fine compilation album that deserves maximum attention from the Doom/Stoner Metal community. Desert Records and Blues Funeral Recordings have done a great job of bringing this album together.
