Review
Sludge/Stoner Metal Legends DOZER return after a lengthy absence with their new album Drifting In The Endless Void. An album that sees the band move into the Psych Rock and Space Rock arenas with a sublime Progressive influence leading the way. As with most Swedish Sludge/Stoner Metal bands, the album primarily changes into a more emotional and DOOMED out style of music which showcases the more emotional side to DOZER that we haven't heard from them before.
The album has elements of Fuzz Rock spiked with their Cosmic grooves which you can hear on the outstanding opening tracks of Mutation/Transformation and the already classic track "Ex-Human, Now Beast". With DOZER going a slightly new modern makeover, there's still elements of the classic sound they ruled with back in their early years which saw them support some of the biggest bands within the underground scene such as Mastodon where I saw them originally back in 2005.
DOZER never rests on their creative laurels on this record as they try different and challenging new sounds for this album especially on tracks such as Dust For Blood, Andromeda, "No Quarter Expected, No Quarter Given" and Missing 13. Sometimes the grooves maybe melodic but then they bring a "SLEDGEHAMMER" delivery to the music with Psychedelic Explosions allowing DOZER to play a more "Post-Metallic" sound to the album especially on the longer tracks.
Drifting In The Endless Void has first rate production values and is without a doubt DOZER's best sounding album to date and will go down as one of the best comeback albums from the Sludge/Stoner Metal scene in recent years.
Believe the hype with this release, this is something special and will no doubt inspire and influence the next generation of bands for years to come.
Words by Steve Howe.
