Review

Texas based Doom/Stoner Metal collective – Doomstress – return with their debut album Sleep Among The Dead and this album proves why the band are very highly thought of within the Doom/Stoner Metal community. The album is being released on Ripple Music and DHU Records. Two of the best independent labels currently working within the scene today.

You may recognise the members of Doomstress from the highly regarded Doom Metal outfit Project Armageddon and Sparrowmilk.

This album sees Doomstress play a heavier and progressive style of Doom Metal compared to their previous releases The album does have modern sounding Stoner Rock/Metal riffs appearing on certain stages of the album. Doomstress have added a more reflective and personal feel to their music. Alexis vocals are passionate and angry as ever. However, Alexis still manages to show her caring and nurturing side on this album.

The songs are quite complex and gloomy in places and I admire Doomstress creative choices they’ve made with this album especially when the heavier Sludge Metal vibes appear. Truth be told, this album feels like a greatest hits collection than a debut album. As all of the songs are great as each other. Doomstress provide a thrilling and personal experience that you don’t normally hear on a band’s debut album. As some of the lyrical content cuts right to the bone and gives the album a more nuanced feel.

If I had to pick songs on the album for people to listen to then I would recommend - Bitter Plea, Burning Lotus, Dreaming Spider, Apathetic Existence and Sleep Among The Dead. As these are the songs where Doomstress impress the most with their own distinctive style of Doom/Stoner Metal.

The production is superb and allows Doomstress the time, energy and space to branch out into the different areas of Hard Rock/Metal the album expertly play from start to finish. Overall, Doomstress have released a wonderful sounding and highly emotional debut album that you won’t easily forget for a long time to come.

Review

Firstly, I most issue my apologies to Sonic Wolves as I promised the band this review a couple months ago. I got sidetracked with other things and then I took an extended hiatus during October. So now it’s time to correct that little mistake with my review of their new album.

Sonic Wolves is the band that features Kayt Vigil (Pentagram, Primeval Realm and Syzslak) and Vita from legendary Psychedelic Doomsters – UFOMAMMUT. So this is a band who know what they’re doing. What may surprise you is the style of music that the band play. As Sonic Wolves play a style of Doom Metal, Stoner Rock, Garage Rock, Psych Rock and Classic Rock.

Their new self-titled album is a breath of fresh air with the band playing a wide amount of different songs that only leave you wanting more. The music is played at a fast pace with Vita’s legendary drumming being one of the albums main strengths and highlights. However Kayt steals the show with her soulful vocals and heavy bass riffs.

Standout songs include Stonefaced General, Ascension, Grim Reaper, Red Temple and Heavy Light. These songs are where Sonic Wolves impress the most with hard-hitting melodies and great doom-based lyrics as well. Sonic Wolves are perhaps more influenced by the 70s Hard Rock/Metal sound on this album but the band still manage to include a few modern based grooves along the way.

The atmosphere can be quite seedy and downright dirty at times but Sonic Wolves have a majestic and addictive sound that’s hard not to be moved by it all. This is an epic sounding album and the production is so damn good. I’m a huge fan of the band’s previous album, Before The End Comes. However this album is a much better album as Sonic Wolves vision is more progressive and has a clearer vision.

Overall, this album is an excellent album that ticks the right boxes especially if you’re a fan of the Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Rock scene. Just be prepared for a few cool surprises along the way.

Review

Witch Ripper debut album Homestead takes the ferocious sounds of High On Fire and merges it with the technical progressive riffs of Mastodon. Now if that doesn’t get you interested then I don’t know what will. Homestead still manages to stand on it’s own merits by playing a melodic style of Sludge/Stoner Metal riffs that moves into many different directions on the album.

The twin guitar work of Curtis and Coltan is what drives Witch Ripper’s music forward with the band adding a cool progressive and psychedelic sound. The vocals from Curtis surprised me as I was expecting something different. Curtis is from the old school of Sludge/Stoner Metal vocals. Taking influence from Matt Pike at time but still delivering his own style of vocals. Brian and Joseph add a formidable backline for the band to deliver their music upon.

The opening song – Wasteland – may sound eerie familiar to long-time Sludge/Stoner Metal fans but Witch Ripper show real creativity on this song especially on the more melodic parts of the song. As the band switch from the raw sludge metal sound to the more friendlier Stoner Rock sound whilst still maintaining a true heavy metal presence. This is one of the standout songs on the album that will have you coming back for more.

Second song – Swarm – is a more thrashier affair and it sounds like the guys are channelling their inner Motorheard. Perhaps even beating High On Fire to the punch by a month with their latest album doing a similar sort of vibe. Anyway Witch Ripper excel again on creating a mini-progressive sludge rock style opus despite the short running time of the song.

Third song – S.L.U. (The Hive) – is one of the angriest songs on the album with Curtis on truly inspired pissed-off form. The music does start really slowly and quietly before exploding into a heavier sound. The music once again shifts into different directions with Witch Ripper brimming full of confidence and you can feel that passion and energy through their music.

The rest of the album follows the same path as the opening three songs with Witch Ripper continuing to impress even more especially on songs such as Ngenechem, Sucker Punch and The Witch. With Negenechem and The Witch being two of my favourite songs on the album and that’s perhaps down to Witch Ripper changing the tone and direction of each song whenever the mood calls for it.

Some people may complain that the album doesn’t take enough creative risks. That maybe true to a point. However for an album such as this, Witch Ripper have still managed to deliver one of the coolest Sludge/Stoner Metal albums of the year. If you’re a fan of High On Fire and Mastodon then you need this album. As Homestead is an absolute blast from start to finish and will leave you wanting more…

Review

I never found the time to review Grajo's debut album back in 2016. I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice with Slowgod II. This is a psychedelic wonderland of different noises ranging from Doom, Space Rock, Sludge and Stoner Rock. Grajo have created a true out of world sound with flourishes of Blues Rock that come mostly from their immensely talented lead singer Liz.

Opening song – Altares – starts off very slowly before the heavy sludgy guitars from Josef and the pummelling bass from Pistolo. Taking influence from Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard at times, Grajo slowly evolve into their own sound with the hollow psychedelic droned out vibes keeping the mood vibrant and slightly moody. The song has a cool sounding “shoegaze” effect that slowly disappears when the distorted sound effects appear.

Second track – Queen Cobra – is a real Sludge/Stoner Rock number with fast-paced grooves and a hard-rocking Blues vibe. Liz takes centre stage yet again with another superb vocal performance. This is a very different song to the opening track and it shows Grajo have enhanced their sound since their debut album.

Third track – Malmuerta – opens with trippy psychedelic Middle Eastern vibe and sees Grajo experiment with their sound yet again. It's a beautifully played and soulful number. The heavy riffs do take their time to appear but when they do, Grajo offer a more reflective and emotional doom and gloom atmosphere.

The final 3 songs Ǝr, Horror & Pleasure and Malstrøm offer more of the same psychedelic spaced out sounds. With Ǝr and Malstrøm being the main highlights on the second half of the album. The production is superbly solid throughout. The music is loud and crisp. Liz proves what a fantastic vocalist she is on each of the songs on the album. Though credit must also goto Josef, Felix and Pistolo for creating a sublime hard-rocking atmosphere that expertly blends the different elements of Doom, Sludge, Psych and Stoner Metal into one glorious sounding experience.

Slowgod II is a thrilling and exciting album that proves without a doubt that Grajo are one of the scenes best kept secrets. Though I expect bigger and better things will be coming to Grajo real soon.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

An Interview With Doomstress Alexis from DOOMSTRESS

Texas doom metallers Doomstress are set to release their new EP, The Second Rite on No Slip Records (CD) and DHU Records (Vinyl). The press release below will explain what to expect.

The EP contains remixed versions from the original, very limited self release and 7" DHU single, as well as new song "Bitter Plea" recorded at the end of the Wicked Summer tour and featuring additional rhythm guitar by guitarist Joe Fortunato (Sparrowmilk/Venomin James/ex-Ancient VVisdom). The artwork that will appear on both the CD & vinyl is by renown psychedelic artist, Goatess Doomwych.”

I was given the opportunity to interview Alexis Hollada aka Doomstress Alexis (Bass/Vocals) from the band. Where we discussed things such as the new EP, Project Armageddon (Alexis's other band) and touring plans amongst other things.

Alexis is widely respected within the Doom/Stoner Metal community and I've been fan of her work for the last couple of years. So I was more than happy to do this interview.

Hi Alexis. Thanks for doing this interview. What can people expect with your new EP.

A mix of traditional doom laden with heavy grooves, lots of harmony guitar work and classic & NWOBHM influences.

You've included two cover versions on the new EP. Uriah Heep's – Rainbow Demon and Coven's Wicked Woman. Why did you choose those two songs to cover. Are they personal favourite songs of yours and the rest of the band.

We picked these covers to show a departure from what we'd been doing in Project Armageddon. This isn't more of the same under my name but drawing from some different influences and writing styles. Uriah Heep we focus in on the harmony work we are utilizing now as a 4 piece w/twin guitars and we get to lay down some heavy groove with our rendition of the Coven song.

The EP is being released by DHU Records. How did you become associated with that cool label. Did you have any others from other labels to release the EP.

The vinyl is on DHU Records and the CD version is on NoSlip Records. I really need to thank Joey & Sabine from Disenchanter for this. After becoming friends with them and discovering the labels as well as their rosters I was really impressed by what they had going on. Once DOOMSTRESS became public we got a lot of interest and from there conversations started up with DHU. We released the “Wicked Woman” 7 inch in fall of 2016 and had already discussed doing a split 12” EP We had a lot of demand for a CD so I contacted NoSlip who has been a big supporter of DOOMSTRESS and has had a good relationship with DHU and both labels thought this was a great idea.

The Second Rite is being released as a split vinyl with Sparrowmilk (Doomstress drummer Tomasz other band, who are pretty damn good in their own right). How did that idea come about. Was that something you and Tomasz decided together.

When I talked to DHU Records about releasing the EP as a split they didn't have any bands currently releasing anything EP wise. Since I was well connected to Sparrowmilk and knew they were well along in the process of their own recording I pitched the idea to DHU who was happy about the idea as well. As you mentioned, my brother Tomasz does the drums for both bands on the EP but we also had Sparrowmilk's guitarist Joe lay down a rhythm track for us on “Bitter Plea” since they had both done tour duties back on our initial live debut “Wicked Summer Tour”.

The EP has been mastered by Texas Stoner Metal legend – Kent Stump. What does Kent bring to the sound of Doomstress.

Kent's such a great guy and I'm really pleased we could get his touch on this. We were super happy with our mix and Kent has a really keen ear and knew exactly what we were going for with this. He brought a nice tempered aggressiveness to the overall sound. The proof is in the pudding so to speak so you just gotta listen and let it soak into your earholes.

You've worked with Kent multiple times over the years. What has been your favourite release that you've worked on together.

This current EP “The Second Rite” by far!

Texas has been hit by some nasty and dangerous weather with the floods recently. Which I saw on the news and Facebook posts. How is Texas coping with the damage the floods have caused. Were you affected by this at all. I hope you and your family & friends weren't badly affected.

Its been a crazy time. We weren't affected directly but Brandon's grandmother was flooded and had to be rescued by boat. She's living with us now. So many good friends and music friends we know have lost so much and its like that throughout the entire region. I don't think there is anyone really who wasn't directly or indirectly affected either via friend, family, job, etc.

How do you cope when something like that hits you so close to home.

Its difficult because you feel so helpless and overwhelmed. It'll take years to fully recover from this so ya just gotta try to take it day by day.

Returning back to the music scene. Texas seems to have a thriving music scene at the moment. With loads of awesome bands coming from Texas such as the bands you're involved in, Wo-Fat and Mothership. What is the scene currently like in Texas.

Its definitely a thriving scene across the state with bands from all genres making waves, not just in metal, doom or rock. Its really amazing to see the explosion of talent coming up.

You play a big part in promoting the local scene and you've promoted my articles when I've featured bands from Texas which I thank you for and I'm extremely grateful for. Where do you find the time to participate with Doomstress, Project Armageddon and Houston Doom Brigade.

Well that's getting more & more difficult to be honest. I'm hoping to bring some fresher blood to the Houston Doom Brigade family to kinda take the reigns or at least some of the slack in covering what's happening around the state and beyond. I also recently worked with Billy Goate @ Doomed & Stoned to do the 'Doomed & Stoned in Texas' compilation which will have all proceeds go to Hurricane Harvey Relief Funds @ The Houston Food Bank. I have over 50 bands from across the state on this which is something I've wanted to do since I founded the Houston Doom Brigade 8 or 9 years ago. It was truly a labor of love putting this together and it should be coming out soon.

What is currently happening with Project Armageddon. Any new releases coming up. Or is that top-secret at the moment.

Project Armageddon is currently on indefinite hiatus. We haven't disbanded or called it quits as we all have a lot of ourselves invested in that band over the years. For the foreseeable future with DOOMSTRESS continuing to progress and tour so frequently its just not where Brandon & I are focussed. Along with that I have also been writing and recording a new record with 60s/70s heavy rockers Josefus and will be performing live with them as well starting at End Hip End It Fest in Houston 10/21-22.

Will you be performing any tours for the release of the new EP. Or will you be focusing on new shows only.

We did a series of short jaunts over September leading up to Stoned Meadow of Doom Fest in Sioux Falls, SD 9/29-30. October we will be doing the same thing playing a couple shows supporting Savage Master in Texas as well as Manilla Road, playing End Hip End It Fest 10/22 and then a short tour to play in Atlanta at the Georgia Metal Alliance's Decade of Doom.

For this interview I did some minor research on you and I never knew that you have your own holiday named after you in Houston. How did that come about. Were you shocked that they named a holiday after of you. What did your family and friends think of that.

yah that was definitely a shock even now to think about it. A big music supporter & metal DJ Herman Garcia took a bunch of info on the things we were doing with the band and what I was doing and accomplishing as transgender woman in the metal scene, being nominated for best female vocalist and best metal band in Houston, some articles I had done, etc and presented it to the mayor's office. I guess they thought it was impressive enough to give me a day in Houston. Crazy right?!

Do you have to do any official engagements for that holiday. Does the holiday still happen to this very day.

Doomstress Alexis Day officially falls on July 5th and the 1st few anniversaries I hosted benefit shows for homeless youth with multiple bands of all genres performing and artists and artisans donating good for auction. The past 2 years I've been so busy and touring that its been too difficult to dedicate the time needed but I still use the proclamation to bring awareness to the transgender community and serve as a symbol of hope for those struggling.

You do a lot of awesome work by raising Transgender awareness within Texas and within the worldwide Doom/Stoner Metal community. Was that a hard or easy decision to make to let people know you're a Transgender Woman.

It wasn't easy that's for sure and for a time I debated on leaving the metal world. But nothing in life is easy and with the support of my bandmates and friends I stepped out onto the public stage and haven't looked back.

I applaud you for being honest and open with that aspect of your life. As you let people experience your life through your music that you've been involved with over the years. Is that a rewarding and fulfilling experience letting people know the journey you've gone through.

Its been an amazing experience. Some of the best interactions have been fans, kids and parents contacting me letting me know that my story has helped them or being able to provide some insight into what they are coping with themselves.

How did you love affair or journey with music started. And how did you become involved with Doom Metal/Heavy Metal. Was it a particular album or artist that started it all.

My parents and my older brother were always playing music. My folks played rock, r&b, some pop stuff but my brother had the heavy rock and metal. Sneaking into my brother's room I would flip through his records and cassettes and the art is what really 1st caught my attention. Iron Maiden , Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Kiss, etc. He would make me tapes to play in my little deck or I'd listen at the school library with headphones.

I didn't really get into discovering specific doom bands until I got in a band with Brandon before Project Armageddon. Then it was a whirlwind of doom. Meeting John Perez of Solitude Aeternus, touring with the Gates of Slumber and Reverend Bizarre, I was really inundated quickly.

What have your been high points and low points being involved with your musical career and looking back, would you change anything about it.

Things just keep progressing for me and the music I write and I'm thankful for every second of it.

I guess the low point would be with our previous band writing me off a record and discrediting my writing, playing and production work on the record. Not sure I'd change anything though because the experiences you have had help shape where you are now and I learned quite a lot over the years. And I'm still learning.

Before you go, do you have anything to say to your fans.

All the love and thanx for all the support all of you have shown me and the band! Hope you continue to dig our craft.

Thanks for doing this interview Alexis. All the best with your new EP.

Thank you.

Review

Greetings all,
October sees the release of the brand new album from masterful occult rockers Ancient VVisdom entitled 33. I believe this to be the band's fourth record. 33 shows the band in peak form mesmerizing listeners with an unrelenting brand of acoustic/folk occult rock. The band uses a stunning array of styles throughout this album. When listening to Ancient VVisdom you are almost immediately reminded of another occult rock powerhouse. The mighty Ghost, there are some definite similarities between the two, however Ancient VVisdom uses far less theatrics and a more straight forward approach. There is a dare I say almost 90's alt rock feel to many songs on the album.
Ascending Eternally starts off with a brief instrumental piano and drone track. Light of Lucifer opens with a folky guitar swing and is a gravelly sung piece of rock perfection. In the Name of Satan is another acoustic driven track that has a slightly cleaner sound and a definite stomp. True Will is without a doubt one of the best rock songs I have heard in a while. It delivers the bands mantra with one of the most serious ear worms possible. No lie, I have sung this song to myself for weeks with no end in sight. The Infernal One is the first real heavy song on the record, opening with an electric guitar riff that kills. Summong Eternal Light is a nearly entirely instrumental track with a heavy emphasis on the bands guitar sound. Rise Fallen Angel is by far the most rocking track on the record owing to the sounds of Danzig or Type O Negative. Another brutally killer track. The next song is the title track, 33, and the song on the album that has that 90's alt rock feel. It is distorted and catchy, a real winner. The Great Beast is a return to the more acoustic feel of the first part of the record. Lux is a somber, almost lilting acoustic number that leads in to the closer, off kilter tinkling piano outro of Dispelling Darkness.
While the subject matter may be considered dark by some. I don't hear it. 33 is a Joyous, Love filled record delivered by a passionate group of musicians and is an impressive array of life affirming rock. If you are searching for something different, I would highly recommend giving Ancient VVisdom a try. You will not be disappointed.

Review

Aussie Doom Metal crew Rituals Of The Oak after a 5 year hiatus with their new album – Mark III. The album which is being released on Vinyl through DHU Records is quite a different sounding Doom Metal band. As most of the album is built around the highly emotional vocals of lead singer – Sabine, with the music being played at a delicate and deliberate slow pace.

Opening track – Abremalin Squares – does take time to fully get going as the traditional doom sounds are played very slow with elements of psychedelic/blues rock vibes allowing the band to experiment with their music. Rituals Of The Oak start playing faster and heavier progressive sounds near the end of the song. It's quite a captivating affair with the music slowly becoming the main focus as Sabine's vocals drift into the background.

Second track – We Remain – opens with a 70s Blues/Hard Rock style passage with the band soon start playing sinister doom and gloom riffs. The mood of the album changes to one of traditional doom metal with Sabine's vocals adding a more atmospheric folk environment. Rituals Of The Oak don't play by the usual rules of Doom Metal, as the album drifts from one different sound to the next. It maybe too adventurous for some but at least the band are willing to try something different to standout from the Doom Meal crowd.

Third track – Game Of Tears – sees Ritual Of The Oak opt for a funk driven sound. WHAT THE FUNK. Funk on a Doom Metal album. Well that was a real surprise for myself to hear. It's a groovy 70s classic sounding track that in reality should feel out of place on the album. Though, somehow the band make this work as you can hear traces of psychedelic doom rock on the later stages of the song.

Fourth track – Woman – carries on the 70s Funk/Disco/Blues Rock assault on the senses. This is way too trippy and surreal for a Doom Metal album. Though I can't deny that I'm bloody enjoying the hell out of this. The vocals from Sabine and the hard rocking riffs create a real doomy atmosphere when the heavy riffs finally appear.

The final 3 songs on the album – I'm So Down, The Northern Wall and The Sorceress – carry on the experimental Funk/Blues/Psych/Doom sound that Rituals Of The Oak play so expertly well. The overall mood and feel of the album is filled with so much musical creativity that you wouldn't expect to hear on a Doom Metal album.

Rituals Of The Oak are in a league of their own. As I cannot compare them to anyone else within the realm of Doom Metal. Mark III is an exquisite, bold, brave and hugely entertaining monster of an album, that will have you listening for days on end.

Superb. End Of.
