Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers LungBurner make a welcome return after a two and half year absence with their latest album Dogma. With the record named after Dogma, you can expect an album that isn’t afraid to touch upon the psychological and spiritual themes of the worldwide belief systems. Some may say that’s a controversial subject to touch upon but that makes this record such a daring and bold experience with LungBurner adding a touch of Atmospheric Sludge Metal heaviness to the record. With the band drawing upon the likes of NEUROSIS, MASTODON, YOB and ISIS to build their conceptual ideas upon.

There’s quite a deft flow of different HEAVY METAL sounds emerging from the darkness such as Prog Metal, Thrash Metal and Southern Metal with LungBurner being quite hard to define at the best of times. The vocals are mostly told through the “HARSH GROWLS” structure though they’re quite easy to understand which allows the listener to either agree or disagree with the hard-hitting lyrics for the whole album.

LungBurner perfectly captures that classic style Nineties and Noughties Sludge/Stoner Metal melodies where everything really did feel quite fresh and brutally exciting back in the day. LungBurner still offer their own great style of musical progression with areas of Post-Rock, Ambient Metal and Distorted Amplified movements which leads the listener into some incredible “uplifting” instrumental solos that float between Post-Metal and Post-Doom surroundings.

This is quite a different sounding LungBurner compared to their previous two albums with Jens Anderberg (Guitar / Lead Vocals) being the only original member left. He’s joined on his “fruitful” sonic journey by Joshua Broughton on Bass and Joseph Mills on Guitars & Vocals. Though, the old magic is still there with a more refined and grounded SONIC TAPESTRY being woven into LungBurner’s DNA on outstanding tracks such as: Adamu, Rapture and Bhajan (The Fall) from the first half of the album. There’s a wealth of different sounding Sludge Metal and Psychedelic Rock soundscapes with LungBurner even adapting a brooding style of Middle Eastern vibes along the way.

Dogma does become more slow paced and spaced out within the second half of the album as LungBurner further explores the more thematic constructs of multiple belief systems. The whole sound does become slightly more vicious and brutal from the final stages of (Bhajan) The Fall which slowly manifests all the way through Apostasy, Misery and the stunning final epic track Pistus Sophia. The music has a more deeper and emotionally charged impact within the second half of the album with LungBurner venturing into heavier and extreme waters compared to the first half of Dogma.

Just be prepared for a journey of pure SONIC excess with that grounded Sludge, Thrash, Post-Metal and Doomed Out approach holding everything together. Dogma is a record that pulls no punches with its undeniably brutal vision. LungBurner may have left the “Stoner Metal” void completely with Dogma which is most definitely a great thing for the band. As they can explore darker themes and create more violent rhythms, soundscapes and grooves with their music.

This album may perhaps be the actual making of LungBurner where they can move forward and really build a name for themselves within the modern Doom/Sludge/Post-Metal scene.

Review

Atmospheric Doom/Sludge Metallers Lungbearer released their stunning debut EP - Embers - back in January 2024. I loved the heavy mix of Psych, Sludge, Doom, Stoner and Progressive themes that the record carried. The guys are back though with a new member Joseph Mills on bass. Natura Duale is their debut album (according to the press release that accompanied the promo) and continues a similar sound captured on Embers but perhaps with a sinister narrative. Lungburner employs a wave of hard-hitting audio clips to press the message of Natura Duale even further.

The record continues with the heavy mix of Ambient Metal, Prog Metal and Post-Metal sounds heard on Embers but with a more thrasher outlook which you begin to feel within the early surroundings of opening tracks of Requiem and The Hidden Hand. Lungburner feels influenced or inspired by acts such as YOB, A Storm Of Light, Mastodon and Shrinebuilder in places. The sound is quite mystic based with the trippier elements that allows the band to build sludgy cosmic rhythms even within the real-life audio clips that becomes part of the action within the stunning second track The Hidden Hand.

You can feel a real life political intensity which reminds me of Church Of Misery before Lungburner started playing a classic mix of Thrash Metal guitars while interlacing them with strands of Atmospheric Sludge Metal based melodies. The vocals from Jens Anderburg are superb and bang on point yet again which can be quite chilling at times with the hard-hitting lyrics that accompany the music. This record could be considered more “EXTREME” compared to EMBERS but this is down to the creative narrative at Lungburner have created than the music itself. Though, the music still branches out into other areas of Blackened Metal along the way.

Lungburner are more adept at playing a more uplifting style of YOB-esque based Ambient Metal with some hidden surprises of their own to stand out from the crowd. Naturala Duale allows Lungburner to come into their own highly original sound on tracks such as (Prey) Job and Barren. The music is quite abstract with a classic style of Post-Metal starting to form whilst never leaving the punishing Doom/Sludge Metal landscape that’s followed the band since EMBERS.

If you miss the good old days of early-era Mastodon especially the REMISSION and LEVIATHAN years then Lungburner will no doubt impress you with Natura Duale with similar harsh growls and complex technical Progressive breakdowns spliced with fast-paced Sludge Metal grooves with first rate lyrics to match.

Lungburner are perhaps at the start of gaining some major momentum within the underground scene with this album and I can see the band only becoming bigger, better and more well known in the next few years.

All I can say this is an outstanding album in every sense of the word. Add this album to your record collection right now. This has all the makings to be a major Album Of The Year Contender for many folks before the year is out.

Review

Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metallers Lungburner debut EP Embers offers quite a variety of LOW & SLOW, WEEDIAN, Down Tuned and Amplifier based riff worship with extra forays into areas of Cosmic Rock which builds up for quite a catchy and downright aggressive slice of underground metal. Channelling the gap between DOWN, Mastodon, High On Fire and SLEEP for an EP that’s quite bleak with the band’s creative thoughts played out within the excellent four tracks that make up Embers.

Lungburner concentrates on playing heavy distorted grooves first and adding classic Sludge based chants and growls for the vocals. The vocals are perhaps rooted in NOLA/Southern Metal with the instrumental sounds focusing upon playing some wicked Psychedelic/Spaced Out rhythms within the stunning opening track Lungburner. The atmosphere can only be described as ELECTRIC with flashes of Heavy Progressive Stoner grooves with Lungburner employing a solid DISTORTED and LOW & SLOW atmosphere to the overall production of the release.

Embers has a sublime use of various samples throughout the record which comes mostly into focus from the excellent second track The Rift. That track showcases a fine style of Blues Rock/Metal whilst allowing Lungburner to show some impressive High On Fire inspired Riff Worship whilst playing their own blend of Psychedelic and Fuzzed Up sounds that make a lasting impression.

The second half of the EP and the final two tracks Embers and Sativa see Lungburner become quite philosophical as these some fantastic choice of samples and vocal speeches that explores themes such as Humanity, Existence and individual mortality whilst powered through a ton of HEAVY PSYCHEDELIC based jams which remain within the crux of the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal underground scene.

Embers sounds superb and that’s down to the EP being mixed and mastered by Matthew Washburn at his famed Ledbelly Sound Studios. Matthew has worked with bands such as Black Pyramid, Atheist, EMBR, Dayglo Mourning and some band called Mastodon very early in their career. The record does have an aggressive presence with the music being played more directly with a raw polished sound which has a whole different flow within the heaviest parts of the EP.

Embers is a stunning debut release which I’m hoping Lungburner becomes more well known within the Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal scene. As this EP is a startling collection of superb sounds that leave you wanting to hear more. Awesome. End Of.
