Review

Doom/Stoner Metallers LungBurner make a welcome return after a two and half year absence with their latest album Dogma. With the record named after Dogma, you can expect an album that isn’t afraid to touch upon the psychological and spiritual themes of the worldwide belief systems. Some may say that’s a controversial subject to touch upon but that makes this record such a daring and bold experience with LungBurner adding a touch of Atmospheric Sludge Metal heaviness to the record. With the band drawing upon the likes of NEUROSIS, MASTODON, YOB and ISIS to build their conceptual ideas upon.

There’s quite a deft flow of different HEAVY METAL sounds emerging from the darkness such as Prog Metal, Thrash Metal and Southern Metal with LungBurner being quite hard to define at the best of times. The vocals are mostly told through the “HARSH GROWLS” structure though they’re quite easy to understand which allows the listener to either agree or disagree with the hard-hitting lyrics for the whole album.

LungBurner perfectly captures that classic style Nineties and Noughties Sludge/Stoner Metal melodies where everything really did feel quite fresh and brutally exciting back in the day. LungBurner still offer their own great style of musical progression with areas of Post-Rock, Ambient Metal and Distorted Amplified movements which leads the listener into some incredible “uplifting” instrumental solos that float between Post-Metal and Post-Doom surroundings. 

This is quite a different sounding LungBurner compared to their previous two albums with Jens Anderberg (Guitar / Lead Vocals) being the only original member left. He’s joined on his “fruitful” sonic journey by Joshua Broughton on Bass and Joseph Mills on Guitars & Vocals. Though, the old magic is still there with a more refined and grounded SONIC TAPESTRY being woven into LungBurner’s DNA on outstanding tracks such as: Adamu, Rapture and Bhajan (The Fall) from the first half of the album. There’s a wealth of different sounding Sludge Metal and Psychedelic Rock soundscapes with LungBurner even adapting a brooding style of Middle Eastern vibes along the way. 

Dogma does become more slow paced and spaced out within the second half of the album as LungBurner further explores the more thematic constructs of multiple belief systems. The whole sound does become slightly more vicious and brutal from the final stages of (Bhajan) The Fall which slowly manifests all the way through Apostasy, Misery and the stunning final epic track Pistus Sophia. The music has a more deeper and emotionally charged impact within the second half of the album with LungBurner venturing into heavier and extreme waters compared to the first half of Dogma.

Just be prepared for a journey of pure SONIC excess with that grounded Sludge, Thrash, Post-Metal and Doomed Out approach holding everything together. Dogma is a record that pulls no punches with its undeniably brutal vision. LungBurner may have left the “Stoner Metal” void completely with Dogma which is most definitely a great thing for the band. As they can explore darker themes and create more violent rhythms, soundscapes and grooves with their music.

This album may perhaps be the actual making of LungBurner where they can move forward and really build a name for themselves within the modern Doom/Sludge/Post-Metal scene.

You can’t say that Blazoner have played it safe here as they absolutely haven't with some classic tracks throughout the last sixty years of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Each track is giving a fresh perspective with a Punk Rock spirit forming whilst staying true to the original. These versions maybe slightly faster and chaotic than their original versions and that’s no bad thing especially on Jumpin’ Jack Fash, I’m In Love With My Car and Travellin’ In The Dark being the prime examples.

Musically speaking, Blazoner are on fire putting in a spectacular performance throughout with a sudden Psychedelic Stoner Metal urgency being played within the classic rock sounds of The Rolling Stones, Queen and Genesis really standing out. The vocals are bombastic and brilliantly outrageous when they’re really needed. Each band member provides vocals throughout and I have to say the standout vocal performances are on I’m In Love With My Car, Copache and Travellin’ In The Dark.

The standout cover has to be the cover of the Melvins track - Copache. As I believe this is the track that struggled with the most in the studio despite playing it countless times live. You wouldn’t be able to notice from this great cover. As it has a fearless quality that doesn’t stray from the original. What makes Sonic Chambers such a great EP is that it ultimately still feels like an actual BLAZONER release. As what made their 2023 debut album such a standout with spiky vocals, insane grooves and action packed melodies that aims straight for the jugular is kept intact right here. 

Sonic Chambers is an absolute riot with BLAZONER showing why they're at the top of their game and actually delivering a record that’s outrageously addictive and actually leaves you wanting more. I’m hoping a new full length album isn’t too far behind.

BLAZONER Announces First Single "I'm In Love With My Car" From Upcoming Covers EP Sonic Chambers

Fredericksburg, Virginia heavy rock trio BLAZONER has released "I'm In Love With My Car," the first single from their upcoming covers EP Sonic Chambers, due out February 13, 2026. The track offers an electrified and harmony rich reinterpretation of the classic QUEEN deep cut.

The band approached the recording with a mix of respect, intensity, and playfulness. Drummer Andy Murray takes the lead vocal, a nod to Roger Taylor’s original performance, while Brian Carnes and Stephen Sullivan join him to build thick, layered choruses that showcase the trio’s signature multi vocal sound. The band recorded an extensive number of vocal tracks to capture the fullness and dramatic lift that makes the original song such a standout. Longtime friend and producer Jeff Covert helped guide the arrangement and brought extra clarity and dimension to the performance.

"I'm In Love With My Car" marks the first look at Sonic Chambers, a collection born from a spontaneous decision to record a few favorite covers in the studio. Pale Horse Ritual feels like they have already truly arrived with their debut album Diabolic Formation which wastes no time in laying down the groundwork a stream of FUZZ DRIVEN and Heavy Psychedelic grooves that feels like a musical TIME CAPSULE was buried in the Seventies and being opened in today’s Sludge driven Doom/Stoner Metal world. The whole result is a record that moves from Fuzz, Psych, Grunge, Stoner Rock and Occult Doom Metal whilst allowing the band to add their own creative identity into the mix. 

The RIFFS are HUGE and bursting with genuine AMPLIFER DISTORTION which you’ll hear within the epic opening track of Deflowered which is an absolute banger especially with this being purely and instrumental track. The song leans heavily within the Sludge Rock aesthetic with moments of DOOMED OUT and DISTORTED clarity with a filthy SONIC influence building throughout that leaves little to the imagination within the HEAVY VOLUME department.

Second track Wickedness sees Pale Horse Ritual channel their OCCULT DOOM METAL heritage with echoes of Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Electric Wizard, Blue Cheer and Black Rainbows emerging. The feedback levels of FUZZ ain’t pretty and it isn’t subtle either but DAMN the band are absolute on FIRE spreading wild tales of the OCCULT that’s buried under an avalanche of gloomy rhythms and twisted sludgy guitars. There’s a deep love for Seventies Horror Films being shown here but it’s the epic PSYCHEDELIC visions that Pale Horse Ritual that offers quite a demonic and spaced out vibe perhaps closer to H.P. Lovecraft as well. 

Third track Holy Lies once again keeps with the OCCULT ROCK theme with Pale Horse Ritual playing a riffier, aggressive and slightly Post-Stoner take which still remains quite vibrant and beautifully filthy at the same time. The grooves are played at a well controlled slow-to-mid pace which allows the distorted atmosphere to gather momentum with Paco’s daring vocals dominating the musical and creative landscape. He’s superbly supported by Will Adams with his grizzled back-up vocals offering a slightly different take. The song really excels with Pale Horse Ritual moving into modern sounds with the Psychedelic Stoner Metal angle fully coming out on top.

Fourth track Save You is a wholly different song compared to the other tracks with Pale Horse Ritual playing a more soulful and dialled back number which is semi-acoustic for the early stages. However, the band delivers a winning Post-Stoner and Post-Doom style that sees a cautionary style of Grunge sounds to appear and even Shoegaze vibes which make this one of my favourite tracks on the whole album. The band still write hard-hitting themes that once again leave a sense of hope and despair at the same time.

The final three tracks of Bloody Demon, Ded and A Beautiful End are all seedy and twisted tales of Psychedelic Paranoia coming to life with the kick-ass PROTO DOOM METAL melodies transforming into other areas of modern day Doom/Stoner Metal whilst having outlandish fun with the FUZZED OUT surroundings that have a violent effect within the heaviest sounds of the whole album. Bloody Demon and A Beautiful End are two of the other standout tracks of the record that deserve your full and undivided attention as Pale Horse Ritual fully establish their own blend of GOTHIC and PSYCHEDELIC twisted bliss. 

Pale Horse Ritual have delivered an intense and brilliantly addictive wild ride with Diabolic Formation which should see the album claim a few ALBUM OF THE YEAR mentions before the year is out. It’s already grabbed a place on mine. This is a must have album. Plain and Simple.

Review

Hailing from Omaha, NE, Beast Eagle are a new acquaintance to me. But what an introduction it is as their new recording 'Sorceress' knocks me off my feet, and then some! Throwing caution to the wind they play what they want and how they want to not listening to anyone but themselves. Being as damned good as they are this approach is the way to go...you don't believe me? Just listen to 'Sorceress' and let the band's music embrace you. Your world will be all the better for it. And what do they play? To these ears it's a wonderful blend of metal/ hard rock and stoner rock which they bring to the table and it's refreshing and rejuvenates these styles.

5 songs are on offer with 'Sharp Tongue' being the opener. It's captivating with brilliant musicianship and has a foundation of heavy mid-tempo metal which moves back and forth with focus on pulverizing us listeners. 'The Dead Follow' grabs your attention immediately with nice heavy riffs and bone crushing rhythms backing Kate's amazing voice perfectly. 'Send Me Down' has a hypnotic trait in the verses while going full tilt in the chorus. 

'Witch Hunt' weaves back and forth between sweet slow parts and faster, lead-heavy sections all while Kate's mesmerizing voice reels you in. 'The Demonstration' ends this brilliant recording and is full of riffs and heavy rhythms and again utilizes changes in tempo perfectly.

Please, bring me more positive surprises like Beast Eagle! In the severely oversaturated world of music of today to be introduced to such a great and original band like this band is a blessing. 'Sorceress' has restored my faith in music again, so Beast Eagle...thank you!

Doom/Stoner Rockers Thunderbird Divine latest Live EP - Live, Loud and Lucky - is a tribute to their keyboardist and friend Jack Falkenbach who sadly passed away. The following below outlines what Thunderbird Divine wanted to capture for this live release.

“THUNDERBIRD DIVINE returns with Live, Loud and Lucky, a collection of three live tracks recorded at Lucky 13 in Brooklyn on June 20, 2025. The recording captures the band during their first extended run of shows after the passing of keyboardist and friend Jack Falkenbach. It marks a transitional period for the band, performing as a trio and confronting both emotional and technical challenges on stage.”

 

Live, Loud and Lucky isn't the most perfect release but it captures the band on electrifying form playing three great tracks that merges Doom, Sludge, Grunge, Blues and Stoner Rock surroundings. There is a certain sense of sorrow appearing within Times Gone Bad and These Eyes which both appear from the band’s acclaimed 2024 album Little Wars. 

The stripped back recording techniques allows Thunderbird Divine to put in a powerful and very direct Sludge/Stoner Metal performance which has a seedy 1970’s Proto-Metal atmosphere emerging before fully expanding into 1990’s Stoner Rock/Metal riff explosions whilst keeping within a classic Blues Rock attitude.

The band continue to explore a hard-rocking mix of Psychedelic excursions into full-on Classic Hard Rock melodies which fully dominate within the later stages of These Eyes and right through to the standout final track of Bummer Bridge (which is from their 2019 album - Magnasonic).

Live, Loud and Lucky is a superb way for Thunderbird Divine to honour their friend’s legacy and I’m hoping the band will be releasing more short, direct and action packed EP’s such as this. As it gets straight down to the business of playing EPIC, HUGE and CLASSIC sounding grooves right from the very start.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

Review

S.S.R.I is the sophomore album from Grunge/Doom/Stoner Metallers CROP who bring a wave of gloomy surroundings to their next stage of their musical evolution. There’s more emphasis on Sludge Metal and Post-Metal on this record compared to their debut album with CROP feeling inspired by the likes of Alice In Chains, Type O Negative, DOWN, YOB and Soundgarden whilst holding their own creative ground. 

The record is constantly changing tone and direction with a grizzled determined attitude coming through Marc Phillips’s epic vocals that has echoes of someone who faced every bleak and horrible challenge that life throws at you but still comes out surviving living to tell the tale. The record is quite bleak and taps into the Nineties Grunge, Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal scene with absolute conviction with the music topped off by epic strands of Psychedelic instrumental passages and sublime violent AMPLIFIER HEAVINESS levels of seedy FUZZ within the opening tracks of Flatline, Formaldehyde and Goddamm.

However, CROP knows when to hold things back and play a more soulful and forgiving style of music that can be quite hopeful in places which leads into the most memorable and intricate melodies of the album. Though, the record will perhaps impress the most when they blend Alice In Chains grooves and the Psychedelic textures of YOB throughout the album.

The lyrics are superb and offer a real insight into the creative process that CROP brings to this album. Sometimes it’s not pretty but at least it’s 100% straight from the heart. The rest of CROP play like their fucking lives depeneded on it with Zach Hunter (Guitar), Braun Dabney (Bass) and Andrew Beauvier (Drums) playing a destructive force of Doomed Out NATURE with heavy melodies and switching over to epic Progressive guitars that allows the most riffiest and meatiest grooves to appear. Marc’s vocals most definitely hold their own with the fast-paced instrumental sounds that run into heavier waters on standout tracks such as Formaldehyde, Goddamm, 10-56, Alone and Breath. 

CROP have transformed into a different, heavier, complex and better band since their 2021 debut album where I feel the time away from the underground scene and releasing minimal new material worked to the band’s credit. As this feels like the real “CROP” have emerged from the sidelines to forge an exciting career and loyal dedicated following to become more known within the Heavy Rock Scene. And truth be told, S.S.R.I is the album that should get them closer to that kind of reward, respect and attention. 

S.S.R.I is an outstanding record and one that will surprise a lot of people within the underground scene. Add to this collection ASAP. You won’t be sorry.
