Knoxville, TN – The cosmic void is stirring once again. Get Ready to Ride the Fuzz – WITCHRIDER Unleash Their Boldest Sound Yet with METAMORPH

Mark your calendars for August 15th – Austrian stoner rock powerhouse WITCHRIDER is back with a vengeance. Their new 6-track EP, METAMORPH, is a high-octane evolution of the band’s signature style: heavy, fuzz-laden riffs paired with brooding, catchy melodies and emotionally raw lyrics. It’s a sonic journey through personal struggles and visceral moods, all delivered with unmistakable intensity.

Breaking away from the more polished tones of their previous release Electrical Storm, METAMORPH leans into a rawer, more unfiltered sound. As frontman Dan explains, “It took several attempts and studio setups to capture the direct, raw power of the drums and blend them with our heavy guitars to build the wall of sound we had in mind.”

Formed in 2012, WITCHRIDER have built a reputation as a must-see live act. Their explosive performances and gritty vocals have drawn comparisons to early Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters — and with good reason. The band’s chemistry on stage is undeniable, their sound unapologetically loud and emotionally charged.

After making waves with their song Bad Boy featured in the final season of the US hit series Shameless, WITCHRIDER is once again proving why they’re one of Europe’s most exciting names in underground rock. With METAMORPH, they’re not just back — they’re reborn.

METAMORPH tracklisting:

1. Witchrider - Used to be a King
2. Sound of the Presidents
3. Hold My Mind
4. Safe to Say
5. Wake me Up
6. Alive

Pre-order:

Portland's Stoner Metallers MORDBEAR Delivers Crushing Debut EP Due To Release June 06th 2025

MORDBEAR EP Details

Release: June 6, 2025
Genres: Stoner Rock, Doom Metal, Acid Metal.
Format: EP,DR.
FFO: Sleep, Om, & Acrimony
Label: Dipterid Records

Tracklist:

1. Like The Dead
2. A Mirror with a Sea of Flames
3. The Alchemist

The Lowdown

Emerging from the rainy gloom of the Pacific Northwest, Mordbear arrives with a debut EP that fuses gritty stoner-metal grooves with surreal storytelling and a heavy dose of acid-fried mysticism. Built on a foundation of ‘70s proto-metal and acid rock, but firmly grounded in the present, Mordbear is the sound of three seasoned musicians channeling personal mythologies, literary references, and esoteric philosophies into towering riffs and wild sonic turns.

Mordbear is the collective force of Tyler Balthaser (guitars, vocals), Nico Martinez (bass), and Erik Larson (drums), each bringing years of experience from vastly different musical backgrounds—from hardcore and jazz to psych and doom. Their chemistry lies in the process: “I write demos for the songs, bring them to the guys, and we work them out until we have something that we are excited about... with the Mordbear footprint on them,” Tyler shares.

The self-titled EP showcases three tracks that function less like a conceptual arc and more like a collection of strange transmissions from the minds of its creators. As frontman and songwriter Tyler Balthaser puts it: “There isn't too much of a specific thread between the songs — two I've worked on in one form or another for a few years now, and one, ‘The Alchemist,’ is pretty new for all of us.”

But what links them is an uncanny ability to turn off-kilter ideas into heavy, head-nodding anthems. The opener, 'Like the Dead,’ was inspired by a surreal conversation with a hippie veterinarian, recounting a theory about global warming, rabid bats, and a Southern California zombie outbreak: “The theory itself and especially the source and setting stuck it in my head, until it was time to write lyrics for what was the first song for this project.”

‘A Mirror with a Sea of Flames’ pulls its title from Tom Wolfe’s ‘The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test,’ conjuring visions of DMT-fueled trips and side-mirror firestorms on a school bus full of proto-hippies winding through the hills of New York in the mid ’60s. Commenting on the inspiration spark, Tyler says: “The text and imagery felt like they were prime for a stoner metal song to me, and shoe-horning dimethyltryptamine into a song’s lyrics alone was worth it.”

Meanwhile, ‘The Alchemist’ explores an eerie modern parable about self-transformation and the cost of ambition in a capitalist world: “Early interests in esoteric schools of thought taught me about alchemy—really just an early form of chemistry, but also an allegory for refining yourself into a better version through introspection and intention,” Tyler shares, while taking a more literal approach, reflecting on our hypercapitalist society: “It can feel like you need to trade your life for a small amount of gold just to get by, and people seem to be willing to trade more and more for a smaller piece.”

At its core, Mordbear is a debut that doesn’t just introduce a band—it builds a world. One that is chaotic, cinematic, and just strange enough to feel true.

The debut EP arrives June 6 via Dipterid Records. Pre-order from now on here.

Polish Stoner/Doom Rock Vand VOLT RITUAL presents single "The Giant Awaits" from upcoming "Swamp Lake City" EP

VOLT RITUAL are on their quest for the ultimate riff. The band was formed in Bielsko-Biała, Poland in the middle of year 2020. First rehearsals took place in an abandoned and cold house – anyway, a volt ritual requires only electricity. Since the beginning they have been focused on delivering heavy riffs and high-energy grooves. Main sources of inspiration were, and are to this day, Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet, Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard.

Self-titled debut album got released in June 2022 and from that time the band actively plays live shows with fellow riff mongers. December 2022 brought a new single “Droga 2023”, departure of founding member, drummer Marcin and arrival of Tomek, whose drumming skills take the band’s sound to the new level. With Tomek on board the band recorded an EP “Return to Jupiter” which got released on February 2, 2024 and brought answers to all questions about ancient ruins, cold outer space and high voltage. In the middle of the year Joanna took over the low frequencies department.

Year 2025 brings a new EP titled “Swamp Lake City” and of course more live shows.

Band comments their upcoming release: "These two songs have been with the band since the very beginning, yet they needed some time to get their final form. Armed with classic stoner riffs we wander through the Solar System and face the ultimate gothic horror"

Music for new EP was recorded in 2024 and all were mixed and mastered by Roch Gablankowski. Cover artwork was done by Mateusz Węgrzynkiewicz. Album will be released on February 2, 2025 on digital format (pre-save) and limited CD.

Belgium's Doom/Sludge/Stoner Rockers HRAEFN unleash new EP of unsettling Psychedelic Doom n' Roll on November 15th

Founded in 2021, Belgian outfit HRAEFN are a compelling metal trio, covering a lot of ground: influenced by heavy, stoner, as well as doom metal, they express themselves in a unique music style. Call it psychedelic doom n’ roll, if you will. Think purified and iconic riffs with some progressive tendencies, matched with eerie and emotive vocals to create pieces that sound like fever dreams, psychotic episodes, prayers of the damned. But what makes the borderline heavy/doom metal of HRAEFN really stand out, is the level of musicality and the collar-grabbing quality of their work.

The second EP of HRAEFN, “RESEARCH INTO INFINITY”, features Terence ‘Doom Foot’ Gevaert (Carneia, Her Fault) on the drums, who joined the band late 2023 and adds some extra firepower to the trio. This new release showcases some more southern/stoner influences in Michael Sremos’ (Witch Which?, Heavy Fox) heavy metal guitar playing, which really fits Tonny van Bavel’s (Staat van Genade) clean but fierce vocals and squirming bass playing. There’s a lot to unpack in this 3-song EP, but the surprises are discomfortingly pleasant.

IN THE BAND'S OWN WORDS:

"There is something about how we interact as a band. We get together with all our experience, our different influences and our pretty distinct playing styles and somehow this intense, fiery and psychedelic music comes out. Stuff we also don't always understand, but it does seem to understand us. Together we become this entity. We become HRAEFN.

Influence-wise, we all come from pretty different musical planets. Everybody has his own set of influences, so it's difficult to point in one or two specific directions. Michael is influenced by Death, Metallica and Black Sabbath, Terence would mention stuff like Candiria, Bowel and Kyuss, whereas Tonny's vocal style derives a lot from bands like Windhand and Mars Red Sky..."

WHAT'S NEXT:

We're constantly creating new tracks and trying to re-invent everything we do. We don't like to stick to one particular thing or style. Creativity is something that really drives us, and to be able to put out more music is always a tough but very rewarding process. But of course we also really want to hit the stage again now with our new drummer and play for crowds, so we're working on a series of gigs in 2024 and 2025 as well. This is our main priority in the coming months.

HRAEFN - Research Into Infinity

RESTLESS SPIRIT will be touring in support of their latest album "Afterimage". Please find details below:

In the case of RESTLESS SPIRIT, the band name says it all, and in more than just one way. Their third album, "Afterimage", embodies the East Coast trio's aim of never wanting to sound exactly like before. Long Island deep-fried guitars meet pounding rhythms and emotionally raw vocals. Where the predecessor "Blood of the Old Gods" (2021) sometimes ushered the listener into twisted complexity, "Afterimage" delivers short, sharp shocks that hit straight home.

Lyrically, "Afterimage" is also born out of a restless spirit. Driven by tragedy and personal loss, singer and guitarist Paul Aloisio has put his heart and soul into the album. Confronted with a choice to deal with his pain in a healthy way or go down a destructive path, the singer and guitarist opted for the former but months later found his words to be prophetic for doing the latter. Deciding that artistry requires honesty, Alosio wanted to share his experience as a message to others in similar situations that they're not alone in their despair. "Afterimage" might well be read as a cautionary tale.

Embarking on their musical journey very early in life, the band's core of Aloisio and bassist Marc Morello met the summer before Kindergarten and grew up discovering music side by side. Channelling influences like BLACK SABBATH, TYPE O NEGATIVE, and THE SWORD and incorporating aggressive modern metal, unabashed stoner-doom pummelling, energetic changes, and stirring, earnest vocals, their band was finally christened RESTLESS SPIRIT in 2019. Their debut full-length "Lord of the New Depression" (2019) fit equally well into the stoner, doom, and sludge molds, while on "Blood of the Old Gods", the three-piece developed a more varied, melodic approach with added complexity.

Discontent at being sometimes labelled 'progressive', RESTLESS SPIRIT, true contrarians that they are, avoided overly-long songs and excessive ornamentation on "Afterimage", intentionally eliminating anything that might distract from the new album's direct, crushing immediacy.

On the live front, the Long Island band has undertaken several tours in support of "Blood of the Old Gods" and shared stages with the likes of CROWBAR, THE OBSESSED and CANNIBAL CORPSE.  They will return to the road in winter 2023/24 to present "Afterimage".

With "Afterimage", RESTLESS SPIRIT deliver a massive punch to the gut that actually feels damn great once the initial pain subsides.

Line-up

Paul Aloisio – guitar, vocals
Jon Gusman – drums
Marc Morello – bass

Yellowknife's GNARWHAL Look Inwards With Provocative Title Track From Upcoming EP “Altered States” Out May 2024

Gnarwhal, the genre-bending rock phenomenon hailing from the remote northern Canadian city of Yellowknife, continues to captivate audiences with the release of their latest single, the title track from their upcoming album “Altered States”. The single is out now and the remainder of the fuzzy, doomy album is being released on May 24, 2024. The emotionally charged track offers a profound exploration of resilience and memory, weaving together intricate melodies and haunting lyrics that resonate with listeners on a deep and personal level. The band comments on the creation of the track:

“Altered States is interesting because when we went into the studio we hadn’t even fleshed the song out and it wasn’t near complete. Mark hadn’t finalized the vocal melody or lyrics and structurally the song wasn’t making a lot of sense. We were actually a bit tentative about including this in our studio time and having it on the EP. It was the last song we tracked. Once Layne laid down the drum tracks and we started working on bass and guitar, we knew we were onto something a bit different and cool.”

“Altered States” delves into themes of personal transformation and the enduring power of memory. The track serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing our past experiences, even as we navigate the uncertainties of the present. The upcoming EP promises to deliver a diverse and introspective musical journey in which the band artfully navigates the realms of heavy alternative fuzz rock and progressive metal, creating a sound that is uniquely their own.

Powerful and personal, the single “Altered States” invites the listener to look inward. It is recommended for fans of Kyuss, Mastodon, and Elder.

GUILTLESS: New Band From A Storm Of Light, Intronaut, Generation Of Vipers, Battle Of Mice Members To Release Thorns On February 23rd via Neurot Recordings

A new voice steps forward to put our concerns and frustrations into words; that voice is GUILTLESS. The band will release their debut EP, Thorns, February 23rd on Neurot Recordings, today sharing the cover art, track listing, preorders, and a video the lead single "All We Destroy."

Picking up where A Storm Of Light left off, GUILTLESS was born from a love of experimental rock, noise rock, early industrial, sludge, and doom. The band is embodied by Billy Graves (Generation Of Vipers, A Storm Of Light) on drums, Dan Hawkins (A Storm Of Light) on guitar and noise, Sacha Dunable (Intronaut) on bass, and Josh Graham (A Storm Of Light, Battle Of Mice, Neurosis’ former visual artist) on guitar, vocals, and noise. Together they present a stripped down, visceral reaction to modern life; angular yet straight to the point, self-aware, surreal, and occasionally sarcastic.

Human singularity, a third world war, scorching deserts, rising seas – it’s all coming for us. The slow grind is already in motion, pushing concrete, bodies, Teslas, skyscrapers, shacks, banks, and Bitcoin into a collective abyss. Piles of discarded trash will inherit the earth. It’s anyone’s guess as to what happens next. Is this the end of the world? Who knows. Who cares? Stand by with the rest of us and watch it burn. We’re all guiltless. We’re all blameless.

GUILTLESS creates apocalyptic soundscapes in their imaginings of the surreal return to proto-human society, as well as what life might be like for the survivors of the next mass extinction event on Thorns. The opening track, “Devour-Collide,” is a song which addresses the decline of civilization, leaving time and space for the earth to heal, the band shouting, “Embrace the ruin, devour – collide, when the beasts dissolve, the meek revive.” There’s the bleak gut-reactional “All We Destroy” and the barren landscape conjured in “Dead-Eye,” and the EP ends with “In Radiant Glow,” a description of the unfolding of a hostile new world, post-extinction event. The conclusion of this narrative comes with the purgation of burning everything down to the ground and starting again.

Through this cycle of destruction and rebirth, GUILTLESS believes that art and music can give us solace or help us exercise our demons. GUILTLESS can be that cathartic release.

The first GUILTLESS single arrives with a video for “All We Destroy,” created by Josh Graham, who writes, “‘All We Destroy’ is the song that set the tone of the band overall and defines a large portion of this first release. It’s a stripped-down arrangement compared to the other tracks but has a clarified pummeling energy/driving force. Lyrically bleak, it feels like the current state and trajectory of our planet, and is influenced by the short story by Margaret Atwood, Time Capsule Found On The Dead Planet

Stream GUILTLESS’ “All We Destroy” at THIS LOCATION or below and find the song on all streaming services now.

Thorns will be released on CD, cassette, and digital formats through Neurot Recordings on February 23rd with 12” vinyl to follow in June. All Physical formats are spray-painted, hand-stamped, hand-numbered, with special paper elements: each copy is unique. Find preorders for all formats and merch HERE.

Infinity Ritual - New Zealand Doom Groove Crew Announce New EP "II" Share Leading Single "Earthdriver"

New Zealand groovy stoner rock trio Infinity Ritual will release a new four-track EP simply named "II" on Friday, November 3rd on vinyl and digital download.

The new EP was recorded and mixed by studio wizard Sam Johnson at Rhythm Ace in Oakura, mastered by Chris Chetland at KOG Mastering, and sees the Taranaki trio delivering their trademark sound, a groovy wall of doom, merged with solid doses of rock and stoner rock.

The recording process for the EP started with drums alone, with no click tracks or accompanying guides from any other instruments or vocals – it is simply Mark Thomas playing the tracks from memory from start to finish by himself. It was a new approach for Rhythm Ace's studio maestro Sam Johnson, as he had to wait for the layers to be added over subsequent sessions to discover what the song was going to become. Infinity Ritual always bring to Rhythm Ace studios a range of different guitar and bass amps and heads, all turned up to a wall rattling volume, and they make use of a range of varied techniques to capture different tones and effects. A blend of all of these give the band their heavy full sound.

The EP's leading single "Earthdriver" is now playing at this location and below

The band says of the song, "Earthdriver was borne of jam sessions leading up to the studio dates, with the various grinding riffs and cosmic solo sections coalescing during tracking. Earthdriver is about the contemplation of existence. The anxiety of dealing with the reality of living in the world and coming to accept that we are all on one giant spaceship hurtling through space. So don’t be anxious – enjoy the ride."

Kal-El - Norwegian Doom Rockers Announce New EP "Moon People" Reveal Music Video For New Song

Two years following the release of their breakthrough and critically lauded fourth album "Dark Majesty", Norwegian doom rockers Kal-El announce the release of a two-track EP titled "Moon People", due out on September 22nd via Majestic Mountain Records.

Recorded at Lydplaneten, engineered by Tory Raugstad, produced by Kal-El and mixed and mastered by Ruben Willem, this new EP shows the Stavanger five-piece merging elements of sci-fi space rock, fuzzed-out stoner rock and psychedelic doom, while maintaining a strong proficiency at writing catchy riffs and intoxicating grooves.

The band comments on this new EP:

"Moon People is a dish best served loud, and even if conceived in the middle of the dark, harsh Norwegian winter, has a feelgood summer vibe to it. Heavy as bricks, but melodic at the same time. To be honest, it was, in our humble opinion, about time to release some new tracks, so while we write on a new album, here is two brand new jams from us – Moon People & Universe! Enjoy, and may the fuzz be with you"

The new three-track EP, Guided By The Second Sun explores the experience of immersing yourself in your fears through "Shaman", while the intensity and despair of not being able to control what is around you is found in "Cyclone Coming". Feel the cyclone take you. The instrumental offering "Merchants of Grief" descends into the void of sadness. SPOOK THE BEAST lay bare sources of fear and anxiety and dive headfirst into the realms of somber gloom in Guided By The Second Sun.
