Review

The lords of FUZZ ROCK, Truckfighters are back with their first album of new material in over a decade ever since their superb 2016 offering “V”. That album saw the band incorporate progressive themes and ideas before they announced a short hiatus back in 2019. The band got back together in 2020 where they’ve played various tours and festival dates across the globe to their legion of dedicated followers. There have been rumbles of new songs over the last few years and the time is finally here with Masterflow.

Masterflow at first glance or listen feels like a very different Truckfighters album with the band deconstructing their highly innovative classic sound and applying a highly methodical back to basics approach which adds a sublime Punk Rock vibe to the whole experience. Mr Ozo and Mr Dango are ON FIRE here and feel like a band reborn as they demonstrate a wealth of hard rocking and grounded Fuzz/Stoner Rock melodies that has a perfect rebellious element to them on opening tracks of Old Big Eye, The Bliss and Carver.

Truckfighters apply an OLD SCHOOL creative methodology to their music that sees them write music that harks back to the days of their classic albums of Gravity X and PHI. The album then uses twisted and pissed off elements that made MANIA and V such great records in their own right. There’s a deeply aggressive sound building up behind the scenes with Truckfighters proving why they are perhaps one of the most impootant bands to emerge from the Desert/Stoner Rock scene over the last thirty years or so.  You could say they're the most important Stoner Rock bands to emerge from the Swedish Stoner Rock scene and that’s no small feat with the likes of LOWRIDER, DOZER and GREENLEAF making celebrated albums over the last decade or so.

Masterflow allows Truckfighters the perfect opportunity to challenge their own musical legacy and forge exciting new opportunities for themselves with intense melodies and classic Stoner Rock grit emerging within Mr Ozo’s vocals. There’s shades of Psychedelic harmonics and Post-Stoner soundscapes that’s perhaps the dominant element into today’s Stoner Rock scene. However, only Truckfighters can deliver a classic level of storytelling into their music which showcases a vibrant style of Fuzz Rock on tracks such as Carver, Truce and Masterflow. There’s even some Space Rock dimensions appearing through different soundbytes and delicate distorted environments forming on how the rest of the album plays out.

The second half of the album allows this to be the band’s most mature, aggressive and original album in years with some moments reminding me of PHI. Truckfighters could have easily released a more nuanced and soft hearted album but that’s not their style as they know what their fans want to hear which they deliver with epic amounts of supreme musical dedication on other sublime tracks such as: Masterflow, The Gorgon, Bad Horse and Goin’ Home. This album feels like you’re meeting an old friend for the very first time after a long absence. You know what to expect from Masterflow but nothing prepares you regarding the experience after listening to the whole record.

Masterflow is expertly produced with a raw aesthetic allowing Truckfighters to exploit that stripped back and punk rock environment to their musical advantage. When an album feels like a greatest hits package and still offers huge waves of exciting originality then you begin to realize what a seriously great album that the band have expertly delivered. The whole mood is emotionally engaging with first rate grooves throughout which is backed up by excellent vocals throughout.

Masterflow is going to end up becoming one of the most definitive Desert, Fuzz and Stoner Rock albums of the year and perhaps become one of their most important records Truckfighters have released to date. This is a MASSIVE album in every sense of the word.

Get Ready to Ride the Fuzz – WITCHRIDER Unleash Their Boldest Sound Yet with METAMORPH

Mark your calendars for August 15th – Austrian stoner rock powerhouse WITCHRIDER is back with a vengeance. Their new 6-track EP, METAMORPH, is a high-octane evolution of the band’s signature style: heavy, fuzz-laden riffs paired with brooding, catchy melodies and emotionally raw lyrics. It’s a sonic journey through personal struggles and visceral moods, all delivered with unmistakable intensity.

Breaking away from the more polished tones of their previous release Electrical Storm, METAMORPH leans into a rawer, more unfiltered sound. As frontman Dan explains, “It took several attempts and studio setups to capture the direct, raw power of the drums and blend them with our heavy guitars to build the wall of sound we had in mind.”

Formed in 2012, WITCHRIDER have built a reputation as a must-see live act. Their explosive performances and gritty vocals have drawn comparisons to early Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters — and with good reason. The band’s chemistry on stage is undeniable, their sound unapologetically loud and emotionally charged.

After making waves with their song Bad Boy featured in the final season of the US hit series Shameless, WITCHRIDER is once again proving why they’re one of Europe’s most exciting names in underground rock. With METAMORPH, they’re not just back — they’re reborn.

METAMORPH tracklisting:

1. Witchrider - Used to be a King
2. Sound of the Presidents
3. Hold My Mind
4. Safe to Say
5. Wake me Up
6. Alive

Review

One of the kings of the Swedish Stoner Metal scene Skraeckoedian returns with Vermillion Sky which is their first new album in five years and it’s a glorious blast into Space Rock and Cosmic territory. The grooves are more outlandish, progressive and way more FUZZED UP. The whole album has a deep exploratory and sense of adventure running throughout.

Skraecokdian have gone down the multimedia route with this album slightly with a recently released video game and an upcoming novel which further expands the whole story of Vermillion Sky. This type of action has been completed before but perhaps not so much within the Stoner Metal scene which gives Vermillion Sky an air of originality which we don’t see or experience within our scene.

However, back to the album. The whole album is sung in Swedish but even as someone who doesn’t speak Swedish I understood the whole creative narrative of the album which is helped by some of the best FUZZED UP and catchy grooves the band have written to date. Strands of Fuzz Rock, Stoner Metal, Prog Rock and Psychedelic Rock combine for a Cosmic Trip on the wild side of Skraecokdian’s creative minds.

This record has all of the classic sounds of Swedish Stoner Metal which allows Skraecokdian to redefine and shape their own musical image. Ambient sounds and aggressive Stoner Metal passages are the most dominant forces on the album which still retains an addictive quality even within the more heaviest parts of the album.

Vermillion Sky is quite a different album to their 2019 release Earth with the action set in outer space and this is a better fit with Skraecokdian becoming the heaviest they’ve ever been whilst offering moments of beautifully played Ambient and Post-Rock sounds on the more quieter parts of the album.

The album is full of complex melodies and vivid song structures which explores the realm of Science Fiction and Classic Fuzz Rock which does have a twinge of the mighty Truckfighters at times but still allowing Skraecokdian being Skraecokdian. The sound is further enhanced by Skraecokdian’s deep use of 1970’s Prog Rock and Science Fiction lore which only improves the overall listening experience.

Vermillion Sky feels like one complete album broken down into individual chapters and it’s hard to say which tracks are my favourite moments. All of the songs are great and equally as impressive as each other but if I have to choose then my favourite tracks are: Starsquatch, The Vermillion Sky, Metagalactic Head Voncho, Night Satan and Astronautilus. As these tracks combine the magic of Science Fiction mythology and classic Stoner Metal grooves which can be quite dramatic and over the top. However, Skraecokdian’s intense delivery of spellbinding vocals, Spaced Out sounds and extended progressive jams makes up some of the most impressive and standout moments to date.

Vermillion Sky is a truly original work of brilliance from Skraecokdian which maybe considered their most complete and best release to date. This is without doubt one of the best Stoner Metal albums to be released this year and an undeniable must have album. End of discussion.

Review

Terminal Forest is the new album from Heavy Psych/Doom/Stoner Riffsters Swan Valley Heights where the band take a Progressive approach that also sees the band to adapt to a "GLOOM & DOOM" style of music for the heavier parts of the album. However, Swan Valley Heights still operate in that LUSH SOUNDING Psych Rock Environment that will appeal to fans of ELDER, Weedpecker and King Buffalo though still allowing the band to add their own Creative spin.

The songs are structured in a way that sees the band play a multitude of different styles that flirt between Psych/Post-Rock bliss to the heavier and more aggressive DOOMED OUT STONER grooves that gives the band more weight in the volume department. Subtle use of Psych Rock and Ambient Trippy effects gives the band a more cautious approach which you can hear on the excellent first track Microbe Galaxy.

This track is an expansive eleven minute plus journey where Swan Valley Heights merge different levels of Psych Rock with a thoroughly modern WEEDIAN flavour. The atmosphere is melodic but vastly aggressive when the mood calls for it. Elements of HEAVY DISTORTED FUZZ appear on the later stages on the track which no doubt leave fans in a EUPHORIC STATE OF BLISS. The vocals are sublime. Clean and focused with plenty of emotional drive behind them. Though, the music is the main strength drawn here with first-rate instrumental work that manages to get the balance of QUIET and LOUD moments down to a fine art form.

Second song The Hunger has a slight classic Desert Rock feeling before expanding into a more Post-Rock/Psych Rock effect. Eerie Space Rock effects give a more adventurous style before that FUZZ heavy sound returns that allows Swan Valley Heights to play some epic Extended Grooves and Sonic based jams. The vocals are calm and effective with a more emotional style. The song does seem to have an Alt Rock feeling which is perhaps down to the superb lyrics. The song does become part of the "DOES IT DOOM" category when the heavier riffs appear.

Third song Space Bash III offers a classic Psych Stoner Rock track with the mood being more atmospheric and perhaps sounding more straight forward. Though, the band explored multiple different musical avenues despite the brief three minutes runtime of the track. Throw in some Truckfighters based classic FUZZ energy and it's one of the coolest tracks on the album.

Fourth song Terminal Forest is the gloomiest track on the album with Swan Valley Heights being more restrained. The song does have its fair share of HUGE sounding grooves but feels more alive when the cautious and Post-Rock based sounds are leading the charge. Another one of the lengthier tracks running past the ten minutes mark. The vocals have a wonderfully surreal "Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel" sound to them which makes this song even more daring compared to the other tracks on the original. Even the lyrics feel inspired by the classic songwriting duo but that could just be my own observations playing tricks on me. The music is where it counts when choosing the perfect moments to unleash the aggressive AMPLIFIER DISTORTED grooves to them. A winning combination of Doom/Stoner Metal sounds that are spliced with Cinematic based Psych Rock/Space Rock delivery.

Fifth song Looking For Bird Pet is one extended Instrumental piece broken down by individual jams and grooves that keeps that Post-Stoner sound with the trippy Fuzz environment becoming quite JAZZY in places.

The final song Star Fever expands the Spaced Out sound for a more Progressive and Soulful feel. The song does start off cautiously slow but it's the swirling Psychedelic Ambient parts that allows the song to become more Doom/Stoner based. The vocals are clear and concise with the album becoming more emotionally driven before the final moments appear. The slight appearance of the Classic Desert/Fuzz/Stoner Rock scene appears in the background which allows the album to be more organic as a result.

Terminal Forest is an album for the Stoner Rock/Metal ages, as it has a timeless quality and feel throughout the whole album. Packed full of vibrant SONIC and DOOMED OUT energy which is backed up by wonderfully bombastic production values. This is perhaps Swan Valley Heights finest album to date which will no doubt get them more notice within the Doom/Stoner Metal scene.

11.End Transmission

Review

Stoner Metal Quartet Wizzerd return with their new album Space‽: Issue No.001. Newly signed to Swedish Label Fuzzorama Records which is owned by legendary Fuzz Rockers Truckfigheres. Wizzerd take a slightly off-kilter approach with this album compared to their previous releases. There's more SONIC experimentation on this album within the confindments of Fuzz, Psych and Stoner Metal.

Opening song Launch is a glitchy and psychedelic blast of weird noises that feels like it's from a different band but allows the listener to become accustomed to the Psychedelic and Spaced out styles of the album.

Second song Sisters Of The Sun is a trippy and spaced out affair with the band taking a Thin Lizzy approach in places. Classic Rock is fused with an almost Garage Rock atmosphere that allows Wizzerd to play their blend of Fuzzed Up Stoner Metal. The vocals are vibrant and upbeat with a definite Classic Hard Rock vibe. The music and psychedelic noises are my favourite parts of the track especially when extended guitar solos and jams appear at the end. Fast paced grooves and Spaced Out sounds work superbly well with the almost Punk based sound of the album.

The album moves at such a breakneck pace that most of the songs follow into each other without a moment's rest. Third song Super Nova is a Garage/Speed Punk affair with that trippy Stoner element being present but quite solitary in places. The Classic Rock guitars have the sound of Seventies Hard Rock but with a  modern day free-flowing WEEDIAN attitude.

The next song Attack Of The Gargantuan Moon Spiders has shades of 50's Science Fiction B Movies to them with the name of the song and lyrics the band have written. The song is more funk based but still holds that lovely Stoner based charm.

Up next is Don't Zorp 'N' Warp and this matches the fast-paced energy of the earlier tracks with Wizzerd perhaps more confident with this style of Stoner Rock/Metal. The song is quite disjointed in places but this is deliberate from Wizzerd with the song going through multiple genre changes. The end result is another warmly addictive and pleasing affair. The music is experimental in nature but this is WIZZERD being themselves and this ends up becoming one of the standout tracks on the album when the band start adding organs and playing a style of classic Blues Rock.

Wizzerd continue their Spaced Out and Psychedelic surreal journey on the remaining six tracks on the album with standout tracks such as Space Chase, Doom Machine Smoke Break, Final Departure Part I: The Intergalactic Keep Of The Illustrious Cosmic Woman.

The album could have easily lost it's way with the many different styles of music that Wizzerd employ here. This could be classed having a Frank Zappa influence in places though I could be looking far too much into things again. The instrumental work and creative vision of the band is near flawless with too many great moments to mention.

The production of the album is quite low-key and not something I would expect for an album such as this. However, the record sounds excellent and allows Wizzerd to throw everything but the kitchen sink for the album.

Space‽: Issue No.001 is a first rate musical adventure and one that allows Wizzerd to release their best album to date. This could become one of the weirdest Stoner Metal albums you'll hear this year and still leave you wanting to hear more.

Words by Steve Howe

Review

Low City Drone is the new album from French Fuzzed Out Stoner Rockers Deadly Vipers. This is their first album in five years and it’s a pulsating blast of Fuzz Rock, Desert Rock and Stoner Rock. Newly signed to Fuzzorama Records (Truckfighers own record label). This album is a subtle mix of different Fuzz/Stoner Rock styles with the band adding a Psychedelic confident sound of their own.

There are elements of Prog Rock and Post-Rock on this release but if you’re here for the FUZZ then Deadly Vipers have you covered. The album is superbly loud and Deadly Vipers are in fine confident form from the excellent opening song Echos From Wasteland. An instrumental track that showcases what Deadly Vipers do so well. Perhaps a less is more approach with their Fuzz Rock when compared to Truckfighters.

Second song Atom is more on the progressive and flashier side of Fuzz/Stoner Rock. This works to the bands favour with Fred’s vocals having a classic 70’s Hard Rock approach. The music is warm and engaging with flashes of aggressive guitar jams and some epic melodic grooves. Adding noises of swirling Psych Rock just adds a more exciting style of music and gives them an edgier presence as well.

Third song Low City Drone is the standout track on the whole album and runs past the nine minutes mark. Opening with a solitary Bass guitar that i’s eerie reminiscent of the Mission Impossible Theme Tune in places before Deadly Vipers adapt a more Alternative and Grungier style of music. Parts Alice In Chains and Soundgarden within both the vocals and melodic guitars. There’s still traces of Fuzz/Stoner Rock throughout this song but the album becomes so much better when Deadly Vipers play sounds outside their Fuzz/Stoner Rock comfort zone. Subtle Psychedelic noises add another layer of confidence for the band to impress listeners with.

Deadly Vipers continue impressing on the remaining songs with their blend of action packed and up-tempo Stoner Rock/Metal that shows the Stoner Rock masses why Fuzzorama Records signed them to their ever impressive roster. Superb musicianship and quality lyrics reign supreme within songs such as Welli Welloo, Meteor Part II, Ego Trip and Big Empty.

The album does add different things to the Fuzz/Stoner Rock scene that we haven’t heard in some time. This allows Low City Drone to be a more exciting and adventurous album compared to their debut album.

The album is helped along by excellent production values that allows Deadly Vipers to have a warm and likeable presence on this release.

Overall, Low City Drone is an outstanding album from the French underground Stoner Rock scene and one that is bursting with genuine creativity and amazing riffs from start to finish.

Review

Enigma Experience is the new band featuring Mr Dango from legendary Swedish Fuzz/Desert/Stoner Rockers - Truckfighters. Mr Dango teams up with former Truckfighters / Witchcraft drummer Oscar “Pezo” Johansson and Maurice Adams from Breed and former Motorfinger on vocals.

Question Mark is their debut album and sees Mr Dango joining his world famous and fast-paced delicious Fuzz/Stoner Rock grooves with the dark and vivid imagery of the Grunge Scene with bands such as Soundgarden and Alice In Chains being a deep influence on the entire album. This allows the album to achieve the perfect balance of sounds that ruled the roost in the 1990’s and merged with the killer modern day Desert Rock, Fuzz and Stoner Rock grooves.

The album is fast-paced from start to finish with Enigma Experience living up to their name wiith their winning blend of different sounds whilst retaining a familiar vibe and flow which should keep listeners entertained and intrigued throughout the album. The different vocal harmonies and performances from Mr Dango and Mr Adams are bang on point and compliment each other really well especially on the later stages of the album.

The music is perhaps the strongest part of the album with the multitude of different rifffs the band play on the album. One moment you’re treated to a grungy atmosphere and the next the band move bang up to the modern day and play some epic riffs you would expect on a Truckfighters album. The lyrics are quite dark in places and are vastly different ot the other bands the members have been or currently part of.

The early songs of Realityline, Lonewolf and Mighty Mind show that Enigma Experience have a rebellious streak running through their veins but there is still an addictive sense of fun that you cannot ignore especially when the heavier FUZZIER vibes fully take over.

This album could have easily ended up as a solo project for Mr Dango as he produced, mixed, mastered and engineered the album. However, by the end of the record you feel that everyone has played an equal part in performing on this record and allow you to feel that Enigma Experience is worth taking and respecting on their own convictions.

Question Mark is expertly produced and played by everyone involved with the second half of the album perhaps being the more well-rounded part of the album especially with songs such as: Corruption, In My Mind My Secret Place and The Zone leading the way.

So overall, Question Mark is a mighty fine record with a ton of great ideas that will appeal to fans across the Hard Rock/Metal scene.

Great stuff.
