Review

Guiltless is a new band featuring members from Intronaut, Generation Of Vipers, A Storm Of Light and Battle Of Mice. Between them, they’ve made some of the most important and critically acclaimed Post-Metal records over the last two decades. They’ve left a wake of destruction in their midst and Guiltless continues that journey with their debut full length album Teeth To Sky. Guiltless did release their debut EP Thorns in 2024 to much critical acclaim. The record’s mix of Noise, Post-Metal, Experimental Rock, Industrial, Sludge and Doom was an exhilarating experience within the short run time of the record.

Guiltless sound has been amplified to the most destructive level possible with Teeth To Sky as the record is more vicious, aggressive and a deceiving level of melody. Taking cues from their love of bands such as SWANS, NEUROSIS, BREACH and even some Stadium Rock fare along the way.

For the most part, Teeth To Sky has quite a visceral and street level style of Noise Rock/Post-Metal with outbursts of aggressive Sludge Metal surroundings with a harsh Hardcore Punk sound which comes to life spectacularly well within the opening tracks of Into Dust Becoming, One Is Two and In Starless Reign sees Guiltless use each individual band members knowledge and history from the Sludge/Post-Metal scene to maximum effect.

Guiltless members maybe from other well known bands but this is a band creating their own identity and sound within the overall Post-Metal scene. Teeth To Sky is brutally original and superbly honest with the lyrics the band have written for the whole album where they preach a few home truths about today’s modern world and how it’s all going to shit at the moment.

The industrial landscapes and soundscapes allows Guiltless to sell the bleak desolate journey to everyone that listens to the album. Distorted grooves and down-tuned Post-Metal sounds are put through the Industrial Rock/Noise Rock machine especially on tracks such as Our Serpent In Circle, Teeth To Sky and Landscape Of Thorns.

Teeth To Sky is deeply rooted in the Post-Metal lore of the last thirty years or so but there’s still a strong sense of modern day carnage to their overall sound with Guiltless allowing modern styles of Post-Doom, Ambient Rock and Post-Rock to form a chaotic style of Sludge Metal which allows Teeth To Sky to become one of the most important and prominent Post-Metal debut records to emerge in quite some time.

With one foot in the past and one in the future, Guiltless are paying huge respects to what has come before them whilst breaking new ground for future fans of Post-Metal to be inspired and influenced by. Teeth To Sky is a wake up call for today’s disillusioned generation and the music is KEY on how GUILTLESS will deliver their music to the Post-Metal masses.

Review

Cosmic Doom Overlords UFOMAMMUT return with their tenth album Hidden which sees the band return to the heavier and harsher sounds heard from their 2010 classic album EVE. This album has a more sinister and psychedelic energy coming from the depths of the Psychedelic Stoner groove which is also quite melodic, downtuned and distorted at the same time.

Opening track Crookhead was first released last October within the EP of the same name. The track is still fresh and original since its initial release. The multi-layered and Progressive Doom sounds have moments of Drone, Post-Metal and Space Rock energy with Urlo’s dense vocals leading the creative charge.

The album has more Sonic Experimentation with freaky noises and aggressive FX that allows UFOMAMMUT to become quite obsessive with their FUZZED UP atmospherics compared to their last few albums. Hidden has a world-building or perhaps WORLD DESTROYING aspect which brilliantly comes into focus on the tracks Kismet, and Spidher. UFOMAMMUT can be downright mean and nasty with some of their music and it’s perhaps the bleakest we’ve heard from the band over their legendary twenty five year career.

There’s a lot of instrumental overlap with each member providing a backdrop of monolithic grooves with subtle flashes of Sludge/Stoner Metal imagery being quite trippy within the heaviest parts of the album. Amplifier Heaviness is one of the major tools that UFOMAMMUT have at their disposal to keep everything wholly original with a fresh perspective coming into play within the more subdued and quieter parts of the album.

The second half of the album sees UFOMAMMUT pull no punches with their aggressive synths and fuzzed up TEMPO of Progressive instrumental melodies. Urlo’s vocals become slightly crazed and shamanic in places but the overall journey is one of psychedelic destruction with the music becoming more SONIC induced that harks back to some of their earlier sounds whilst giving their music a modern makeover on tracks such as: Mausoleum, Leeched and Soulost.

Hidden is perhaps UFOMAMMUT’s best record since the departure of original drummer Vita and Levre puts in a commanding performance throughout. UFOMAMMUT have earned their reputation as one of the true greats and HEAVYWEIGHTS of the European Doom, Sludge and Stoner Metal scene. Hidden just solidifies that fact, and allows this to become one of the standout albums to own this year.

Here’s to the next 25 years of this amazing band…

Italian Psychedelic Sludge/Doom Metal Trio UFOMAMMUT Shares “Kismet” Visualizer From Upcoming New Album - Hidden

Italian Psychedelic Sludge/Doom Metal Trio UFOMAMMUT Shares “Kismet” Visualizer From Upcoming New Album, Hidden,Due Out On May 17th Via Neurot Recordings/Supernatural Cat!

Kismet” is the sprawling new single from Italian psychedelic doom/sludge metal trio UFOMAMMUT, celebrating their 25th Anniversary in 2024. With an animated video that just exclusively premiered at Cvlt Nation, the song is the latest preview of the band’s tenth LP, Hidden, nearing May release on Neurot Recordings/Supernatural Cat Records.

Hidden marks a shift in UFOMAMMUT‘s musical composition, aiming for a more intense and heavy sound, as they have displayed over the prior two releases. The title, Hidden, reflects the concept of the presence of everything in our existence and the ability to bring to light what lies within us. With Hidden, the band delves into a sonic journey that traverses vast expanses of space and time. From the crushing heaviness to the hauntingly melodies, from the textured compositions to the otherworldly atmospheres, Hidden testifies to the never-ending evolution of UFOMAMMUT and their mastery of creating immersive sonic experiences: a fitting celebration of their 25 years of sonic exploration and experimentation.

Like any good psychedelic trip, the music of UFOMAMMUT has always been inextricably intertwined with visual art, and as always, the artwork, videos, and all visuals/graphics for Hidden were created by Malleus Rock Art Lab, the rock/music graphic design collective of which Poia and Urlo are part of with Lu. Hidden was recorded at Flat Scenario Studio in Piemonte, Italy, with Lorenzo Stecconi handling the mixing and mastering, and Luca Grossi overseeing vocal tracking.

The band reveals, “‘Kismet’ represents the divine destiny predetermined by God for us, it embodies the concept of fate and what lies ahead for us. ‘Kismet’ is one of the most profound tracks on the album, delving into the journey of life itself. Like cascading waterfalls reaching for the sky, or droplets ascending towards the sun only to dissipate into the vast universe, our existence moves steadily through time, emanating light and energy that permeates our surroundings. This song encapsulates the essence of the album, distinct from Fenice, which is characterized by monumental riffs yet infused with ethereal atmospheres that redefine our yearning for psychedelia.”

Cvlt Nation writes, “Their riffs are so trippy that listening to this song feels like a sonic shroom trip taking root inside of my brain. UFOMAMMUT are so much more than a doom band, they are a creative unit focused on manifesting mind-altering soundscapes that transcend sound itself.”

Hidden will be released on CD, LP, and digital on May 17th, in North America through Neurosis’ Neurot Recordings, the vinyl pressed on a Silver Nugget variant in a gatefold jacket. In Europe, the band’s Supernatural Cat Records will release it, a standard version on 180-gram Marbled Purple And Black variant, and a limited version of 500 copies on 180-gram Crystal Clear variant crafted by hand using photosensitive colors that are activated by sunlight, bringing the concept of the album to life, with multiple bundles and options.

Rising from the ashes of their prior band Judy Corda, UFOMAMMUT formed in the late 1990s by Poia and Urlo (bass, vocals, effects, synths), together with Vita (drums). Over the course of two-and-a-half decades, UFOMAMMUT has developed a unique sound that combines heavy, dynamic riff worship with a deep understanding of psychedelic tradition in music, which has resulted in a cosmic, futuristic, and technicolor sound that fully immerses listeners. They’ve produced a wide spectrum of albums, EPs, live albums, a box set, compilation tracks, and covers – including a track on the Superunknown Redux Soundgarden tribute album.

The fusion between heaviness and psychedelia, an obsession of the band since the beginning, takes on a new, changing form in ‘Leeched.’”

GUILTLESS: New Band From A Storm Of Light, Intronaut, Generation Of Vipers, Battle Of Mice Members To Release Thorns On February 23rd via Neurot Recordings

A new voice steps forward to put our concerns and frustrations into words; that voice is GUILTLESS. The band will release their debut EP, Thorns, February 23rd on Neurot Recordings, today sharing the cover art, track listing, preorders, and a video the lead single "All We Destroy."

Picking up where A Storm Of Light left off, GUILTLESS was born from a love of experimental rock, noise rock, early industrial, sludge, and doom. The band is embodied by Billy Graves (Generation Of Vipers, A Storm Of Light) on drums, Dan Hawkins (A Storm Of Light) on guitar and noise, Sacha Dunable (Intronaut) on bass, and Josh Graham (A Storm Of Light, Battle Of Mice, Neurosis’ former visual artist) on guitar, vocals, and noise. Together they present a stripped down, visceral reaction to modern life; angular yet straight to the point, self-aware, surreal, and occasionally sarcastic.

Human singularity, a third world war, scorching deserts, rising seas – it’s all coming for us. The slow grind is already in motion, pushing concrete, bodies, Teslas, skyscrapers, shacks, banks, and Bitcoin into a collective abyss. Piles of discarded trash will inherit the earth. It’s anyone’s guess as to what happens next. Is this the end of the world? Who knows. Who cares? Stand by with the rest of us and watch it burn. We’re all guiltless. We’re all blameless.

GUILTLESS creates apocalyptic soundscapes in their imaginings of the surreal return to proto-human society, as well as what life might be like for the survivors of the next mass extinction event on Thorns. The opening track, “Devour-Collide,” is a song which addresses the decline of civilization, leaving time and space for the earth to heal, the band shouting, “Embrace the ruin, devour – collide, when the beasts dissolve, the meek revive.” There’s the bleak gut-reactional “All We Destroy” and the barren landscape conjured in “Dead-Eye,” and the EP ends with “In Radiant Glow,” a description of the unfolding of a hostile new world, post-extinction event. The conclusion of this narrative comes with the purgation of burning everything down to the ground and starting again.

Through this cycle of destruction and rebirth, GUILTLESS believes that art and music can give us solace or help us exercise our demons. GUILTLESS can be that cathartic release.

The first GUILTLESS single arrives with a video for “All We Destroy,” created by Josh Graham, who writes, “‘All We Destroy’ is the song that set the tone of the band overall and defines a large portion of this first release. It’s a stripped-down arrangement compared to the other tracks but has a clarified pummeling energy/driving force. Lyrically bleak, it feels like the current state and trajectory of our planet, and is influenced by the short story by Margaret Atwood, Time Capsule Found On The Dead Planet

Stream GUILTLESS’ “All We Destroy” at THIS LOCATION or below and find the song on all streaming services now.

Thorns will be released on CD, cassette, and digital formats through Neurot Recordings on February 23rd with 12” vinyl to follow in June. Review

Slow Change Will Pull Us Apart is the debut album from Post-Hardcore/Noise Rock/Math Rock collective Ex Everything who are made up current and former members of bands such as Kowloon Walled City, Early Graves and Mercy Ties to name but a few. However, Ex Everything are very much their own thing by focusing upon a melodic and catchy aggressive sound with Sludge Punk and Doomed Out elements to give their music a more muscujlar flow. There's small traces of Psychedelic Manic energy which I feel is from the Kowloon Walled City side of life but these guys play at a much visceral and faster pace.

The opening track The Reduction Of Human Life To An Economic Unit is the perfect commentary driven track on today's modern world with harsh creative overtones allowing the album to have a true real life feel. There's parts of this album that Ex Everything reminded me of a more primal sounding At The Drive In with razor sharp lyrics and great vocals that move across the boundaries of Hardcore Punk/Noise Rock with some delicate moments of slightly melodic vocals with the maority being quite harsh sounding. The instrumental work is ferocious with an almost metallic Post-Rock/Sludge fused atmosphere working superbly well with the DIY PUNK based production values.

Second song Exiting The Vampire Castle is powered by a pummelling bass guitar and moments of heavy Noise Rock guitars with the vocals being quite calm at first before exploding into a Hardcore Punk fury. The grimy surroundings of the song is quite uncompromising but Ex Everything still captures a Psych Rock/Metal attitude with glitch based Industrial sounds becoming more pessimistic as the song moves onto its natural conclusion.

Third song Detonation In The Public Sphere feels like a commentary of the American Political System over the last decade or so which is how I interpreted the song. I could be way off base but the song is played at a breakneck Punk Rock speed with Ex Everything getting everything out in the open with perhaps some of the most uncompromising lyrics on the album. The music is raw, seedy and quite grimy but once that allows Ex Everything to play a more dynamic creative attitude within their ranks which shines through for the rest of the album.

Fourth song A Sermon IN Praise Of Corruption is another Sludge and Dirge Ridden offering with that killer bass line being one of the finest parts of the album. However, the instrumental work overall is absolutely thrilling with Ex Everything being dominant within their Punk/Metal hybrid sound that has flashes of the menacing Doom/Sludge Rock. The Noise Rock aspects offer a more realistic sound with Ex Everything adding much needed social commentary within their lyrics. The overall message of the song allows this to be one of the album's standout tracks with the band showcasing a wonderful style of Math Rock musical patterns that change direction when you least expect it. The mood is wholly chaotic which is where Ex Everything becomes quite a destructive force where there's no stopping them.

Fifth song Slow Cancellation Of The Future continues with the bleak message of how everything is fucked up within the world with jagged guitars, distorted Math Rock rhythms and Sludge Punk driven sounds that allows the vocals to have a thrilling "voice of reason" or "voice of the people" attitude which had me nodding in agreement. The song moves effortlessly from Noise/Punk Rock dynamics to a more violent style of Post-Punk dynamics with a twinge of Kowloon Walled City dirge ridden grooves sweetening the deal.

The final three tracks of the album sees Ex Everything become ever more socially aware pointing out terrible injustice currently happening in the world with their blend of highly destructive grooves that showcases some moments of Progressive energy and that epic sounding Psychedelic energy appearing brilliantly within the tracks  of The Last Global Slaughter and "Plunder, Cultivate, Fabricate".

Slow Change Will Pull Us Apart is one of the best Noise-Rock/Post-Hardcore/Math Rock albums I've heard in years. This album has the power to shock and impress you at the same time. This is quite an uncompromising album with Ex Everything delivering some highly original instrumental sounds that leave you wanting to hear more. An outstanding debut album from a band that everyone should know about now.

Review

Ufomammut gave the Doom/Stoner Metal world a massive shock when they announced they were splitting up back in 2020. After 9 wildly successful albums the band had decided to call it a day due to creative differences on where to take the band next.

Fast forward a year later the band reformed to a massive sigh of relief from the Metal community though this time without longtime drummer and founding member Vita who is focusing on his other musical project Sonic Wolves.

Ufomammut have a new member and drummer (Levre) in their ranks and he’s a welcome addition to the Ufomammut family. Fenice (meaning Phoenix in Italian) is their 10th album and sees the band opt for a “back to basics” approach” with its Electronica and Psychedelic centric theme. The record was apparently meant to be one long single track before wisely being split into six individual parts.

This record feels like the spiritual successor to their classic album EVE with its style of Psychedelic Spaced Out Doom/Stoner Metal though focusing firmly more on Heavy Electronica sounds. There are elements to this record that feel and sound like Urlo’s solo project THE MON with its gloomy and abrasive themes held on the album. However, this truly remains an UFOMAMMUT record through and through with the distorted guitars and ambient spaced out themes.

Fenice opens with the brilliant opening song Duat. A song that passes the 10:30 minute mark with fast=paced grooves with a classic Psych/Space Rock backdrop for everything to be held together with. The music moves from slow-paced dimensions to a more aggressive style towards the end of the song which feels inspired by Motorhead in places.

Vocals on this album are sparse to begin with and only appear when they need to. Fenice feels like Ufomammut of old reconnecting with the later stages of their career and finding common ground to move on with future challenges with this release.

The album contains elements of Drone Music which we haven’t heard in a long time from the band, well not as good as this. Each song tells an intruding chapter of music of their own which does allow the band to play different styles of Doom/Stoner Metal but just be prepared for those ELECTRONICA vibes to dictate the whole album.

All of the songs are equally as good as each other. I can’t choose my favourite song at this time but if I’m pushed to do so then Psychostasia, Metamorpheonix and Pyramind come to mind. As Ufomammu really thrive on these tracks especially when the fantastic vocals appear which adds an extra layer of gloomy based heaviness.

Fenice is perhaps Ufomammut's most complete, adventurous and best release since EVE. Ufomammut had to take a step back and reassess their musical choices over the last decade and they’ve succeeded by reinventing themselves yet again as one of the underground's most original and constantly brilliant Doom/Stoner Metal bands out there.

Fenice is a breathtaking display of vivid ideas, themes and heavy grooves that allows Ufomammut to release one of the wildest and most thrilling Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Metal albums of the year.
