Hardcore/Punk/Sludge Metallers Silverburn (ex-Taint & Hark) announce UK tour with High on Fire

SILVERBURN, the new solo project by James ‘Jimbob’ Isaac (Hark & Taint) released their debut album Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation via MSH Group Music in August last year.

Welsh metal visionary Jimbob Isaac, known from his previous bands Taint and Hark, recorded the album during lockdown in 2020. He handled all vocals, guitar, bass and drums himself. With this album, Jimbob has meticulously crafted a wholly uncompromising solo offering in the truest sense. It has been said that extreme conditions demand extreme responses, and Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation ('SITA') began as an elemental response to the almighty global gut-punch that surrounded it’s creation.

From the world-ending double-kick maelstrom of opening track “Annihilation” to the cinematic, discordant chug and release of “Etheric Crush” this album draws from Isaac’s beloved eras of 90’s metal and 00’s metallic hardcore, noisecore, space and sludge metal and bands like Botch, Mastodon, Knut, Converge, Keelhaul, Crowbar, Sepultura, Neurosis and Helmet.

Now following shows with Crowbar and a slot at ArcTanGent festival, SILVERBURN, will tour the UK in June this year with High on Fire. Jimbob comments,

"Silverburn are pumped for this tour. I've made artwork for High on Fire in the past, and have known Jeff (Matz) for many years. These will be some intense shows, so prepare for maximum pummel”.

Jimbob Isaac - Everything

Review:

Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation is the debut album from Sludge/Hardcore/Doom/Thrashers Silverburn otherwise known as the new project from Welsh Legend Jimbob Issac of TAINT and HARK fame. This album is quite a different beast compared to TAINT and HARK with Jimbob operating with a more Thrash/Hardcore aggressive sound. The album is very fast-paced with the onslaught of Thrash/Sludge Metal grooves. There's an epic sense of adventure from Silverburn despite the short thirty minute runtime of the album.

Jimbob does cover a lot of creative ground on this album with harsh vocals throughout and it's an almost different vocal style from Jimbob when he unleashes a more sinister presence to his vocal styles compared to his previous bands. The music is mostly Hardcore/Thrash based with Jimbob's trademark Sludge/Stoner/Doom quickfire grooves being there for everyone to hear. The music is more abrasive here and if TAINT were around to this day then I can see this being the type of band they would ultimately become. The songs are superbly constructed that allows Jimbob to play an wicked array of different gloomier riffs with bleak sounding Psychedelic textures.

The album contains a wealth of first rate lyrics and heavy Progressive sludgy jams especially on tracks such as Annihilation, Formless Atomization Of Omniscient Particulate and Vita Potentia Animus. Silverburn moves along at such a violent and breakneck speed you can easily be forgiven for wanting to take a rest with this album. However, Jimbob's ferocious and breathtaking performance throughout the album will keep you along for the ride. The music is more real when the grooves become heavier and progressive on tracks such as Vita Potentis Animus, Pain Body (Torn From Auric Field) and Sulacreality.

The later stages is where Jimbob lets fly with some epic CAVE-IN and MASTODON inspired Progressive Sludge Metal sounds whilst still offering his own refreshing style of music that remains highly original and absolutely essential in its own right. With a neverending arsenal of different grooves, Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation has allowed Jimbob to rediscover his musical creative zest that he showed with both TAINT and HARK for an album that makes him an essential part of the Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal scene that he's served brilliantly over the last 30 years.

Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation is an absolute RAGER in every sense of the word. Silverburn could be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come especially with the band now performing live gigs in the near future. They have the songs to pulverise anything that stands in their way and release an album that could become one of the most essential albums you need to listen to this year. This is a must have album and I'm glad to have Jimbob Isaac back making great albums such as this.

SILVERBURN ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM 'SELF INDUCED TRANSCENDENTAL ANNIHILATION' AND RELEASE NEW SONG

SILVERBURN is the solo project of James ‘Jimbob’ Isaac. The Welsh metal visionary began this journey during the cruel lockdown winter of 2020. It has been said that extreme conditions demand extreme responses, and ‘Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation’ (SITA) began as an elemental response to the almighty global gut-punch that surrounded it’s creation.

With this album, Isaac has meticulously crafted a wholly uncompromising solo offering in the truest sense. Spirit Metal, Quantum Thrash, Metaphysical Post-sludgecore… call it what you will, this album takes zero prisoners. A true dark night of the soul, in stereo. Having written, constructed and finalised each song at his digital home studio within a self-allotted twelve month time frame, Isaac then proceeded to practice and actualise the live drumming over the twelve months that followed. The two and a half year creative journey then culminated in the recording studio where JB committed each live instrument to tape with producer Gethin Pearson at his Institute of Sonic Architecture studios in Wales, in January 2023.

Released on 11th August (MSH Music Group), ‘SITA’ is a healing rite of passage. A hero’s metallic journey of total annihilation, rebirth and healing through fire. With Isaac’s legacy traversing his former bands Taint and Hark, this solo album marks a shift forward from his tried, tested and influential ‘stoner rock/post-hardcore/prog-sludge’ template. Whilst followers and fans of his signature roots may take some surprise over the hard hitting direction of Silverburn, the DNA of these songs resides firmly within Isaac’s authentic canon of influences. From the world-ending double-kick maelstrom of opening track ‘Annihilation’ to the cinematic, discordant chug and release of ‘Etheric Crush’ this album draws from Isaac’s beloved eras of 90’s metal and 2000’s metallic hardcore/math/noisecore/space/sludge metal.

Listen to first single ‘Annihilation' below:

While ‘SITA’ is centred around the almighty chug and more of Isaac’s signature discordancy, he also continues his innate thirst for swing, groove and gargantuan tempo drops along side the barrage of on-point bludgeon. With the nexus of Isaac’s song craft stemming from his drumming heart this record is laden with seismic rhythm shifts, breeze-block riffing, prog-punk twang and heart breaking wide screen melody/melancholy. In an era where stock pentatonic has become passé and so-called ‘prog’ has already dated, Silverburn smashes with apocalyptic vitality and kinetic spirit. Isaac’s lyrical matter spans multi-dimensionality, Jungian themes of psychology/philosophy, the void and spiritual rebirth. Equally primordial, visceral, transcendent, healing and defiant. As album closer ‘Bathe In Fire’ decrees.. “Your false appearance, crumbling facade, it withers away…My energy rises, immersed in fire”. Silverburn is alive.

The 'SITA' cover art is handled by Isaac himself, taking his first step into digital painting. A renowned visual artist himself, he was inspired by jazz/prog/rock art legend Mati Klarwein. Isaac has concocted an intense and jarring vision to compliment the music and lyrical landscape. The final piece evokes classic crossover/thrash with an acid-fried progressive/contemporary sensibility.
