It's a beautiful Thursday night, the moon shining brightly in the sky as I sit out on the back porch and smoke a nice little joint. My fiancee and her kiddo headed off to see some band called AJR at Ball Arena in Denver so I turned on the ole stereo system and cranked up the new Orange Goblin. Orange Goblin. The name is synonymoums with the Heavy Underground. These guys have been bringing the riffs for years and they are about to tear another hole in the fabric of the stoner rock scene wide open with their newest effort, Science, Not Fiction. 

The songwriting of Orange Goblin is a cut above a lot of other stuff coming out recently. Great lyrics that mesh perfectly with the usic, perfectly placed in the mix make this album so listenable. Science, Not Fiction is the album you want to break out to your friends and show them that the heavy underground isn't just a bunch of droning doom, but it also has bands that will kick you in the ass and make you get up and rock the fuck out. This is a sativa amongst so many indicas in the heavy underground. 

Obviously Orange Goblin isn't the only band playing at this pace but Orange Goblin is accessible without compromising on anything. Crushing guitars, pounding rhythms, and smart lyrics have me placing this album at a different level from most of what I have heard this year. I guess it's what I might expect from the mighty Orange Goblin but I'm still blown the fuck away by this ripper. I can't see this getting off my stereo anytime soon, I want to listen to it over and over again! A heavy underground classic!

My quick impressions of the songs on this fabulous album:

The Fire at the Center of the Earth is Mine starts off the proceedings with an absolutely crushing riff. Fuzzy distortion and manic guitars lead into a killer rock song. The vocals are fantastic, providing a fun sing along chorus. The vocal mix is excellent here, perfectly placed it neither dominates the jam nor does it get lost under the other instruments. Heavy, heavy rock and roll here. This is straight up heavy underground madness. Blistering pace held together by a stellar rhythm section. This one rips all the way through, with elements of hard desert stoner rock and classic metal riffs. This is just pure hard rock. 

(Not) Rocket Science is a jam with grungy, punky sensibilities. This one has excellent vocals and great lyrics. You will be singing along to this one. Bouncing and fun with an edge. This is a rock song in the Motorhead tradition. Excellent bass and powerful drumming accompany the excellent vocal work and the driving guitar. This is one of many songs on this album that would be on the radio in a perfect world.

Ascend the Negative is so damn positive! I love this track, uplifting without being preachy. This pounding rocker will have you pumping your fist and telling yourself that you can do it, whatever it is. This fits in perfectly with the album's overall theme. 

The next track, False Hope Diet starts with a more contemplative approach, building tempo as it gets cranking.  The lyrics here are strong...a warning. This is a vocal driven rocker but with stellar, heavy guitar thunder. False Hope Diet is really fun to sing along to, I can imagine this will be a crowd pleaser if they play it live.

Piano opens Cemetery Rats and I got a weird momentary black parade flashback before the occultist psychedelia kicked in, slowing the pace of the record for a good minute and a half before breaking into some hard thrashy riffs! I love this, pure metal insanity. This is the kind of song that has so much crossover potential. Cemetery Rats has got to appeal to some of those in the cocaine-metal, Slayer/Pantera camp. This song just rips. 

The Fury of a Patient Man is another punky, grungy face melter. I like how the punk influence shines through here. The song trades off between a punkish delivery and a softer yet still hard edge sound. There are very cool songwriting skills on display throughout the album, especially highlighted on this smoking hot jam.

Gemini (Twins of Evil), a classic hard rocker. Excellent, clearly sung vocals are a pleasure that is more rare than I wish it was in this genre. This is another wonderful song that crosses lines and if rock radio existed this song would be in regular rotation on your local album oriented rock station.

The Justice Knife is a spacey hard rocking thrasher, with interesting depth to not only the lyrics but the layering of the instruments and textures of the song. Almost Slift like in the constant swaying groove this song has amazing power! 

End of Transmission ties this brilliant album together. The final cut on most versions of the album, this is yet another strong rocker. The vocals soar and convey an urgency to find answers to the questions asked throughout the proceedings. This badass song is what I consider uncompromising ROCK AND ROLL. 

There is a bonus track. Eye of the Minotaur is some dark, occult goodness. Grungy, punky and metal altogether in one; the bonus track makes excellent use of clever lyrics and cool tempo changes throughout this ripper. The guitar work here is unique, with cool unexpected tones, stops, and blistering fills makes this one move along and once again brought me to my feet, pumping my fist and banging my head.

Thematically strong, this album explores the rift between science and religion. The songs follow this theme throughout. Obviously timely and an important discussion, it's cool to see a band addressing current issues while not coming across as preachy. Very punky in theme and lyrical content Orange Goblin embraces various genres and styles while making this album very much ORANGE GOBLIN. This stuff is gonna punch you in your face and leave you a little sweaty, bruised and amazed. I don't think I've heard a better album this year. I'm in awe of Orange Goblin. Go listen to this RIGHT NOW!

Groove-laden, Stoner/Doom Metal Band Barbarian Hermit share album title track 'Mean Sugar'

Manchester’s leading purveyors of groove laden, stoner/doom metal, Barbarian Hermit recently announced their return with new album ‘Mean Sugar’, released on 2nd August (APF Records).

Written over a 3 year period ‘Mean Sugar’ is a cathartic creation, set against a back-drop that has seen people endure global pandemic, endless political turmoil, a cost of living crisis and war. During these times often the best coping mechanism is to go into a room with your friends and focus your energy on playing some very heavy and loud music. It also may just be the heaviest ever tribute to Northern life. Frontman Simon Scarlett comments on the video for the latest single and the album’s title track,

"Mean Sugar is about growing up in a northern town. It comes across as boastful and full of bravado, but in reality it’s precarious and delicate. In the music video, I’ve blended local scenes shot over the last couple of months, aswell as snippets from Barbarian Hermit outings. Some of the other music videos we’ve done have been gregarious and fun, often using green screen. With the Mean Sugar video I wanted to create something to contrast those, no green screen, straight footage, but I didn’t want to lose the trippy visual aesthetic. Still striking, very local and relevant to us as a band, I hope this video gives viewers another glimpse what is being Barbarian Hermit.”

Recorded by Joe Clayton at No Studio and mastered by Chris Fielding (Foel Studios), the album sees the return of original vocalist Simon Scarlett who helped craft the band’s debut ‘One’ EP, originally released in 2016 (and reissued on APF Records in 2021).

Simon rejoining during lockdown in 2020 is marked as a real turning point for the band with guitarist Adam Robertshaw stating, "It’s been an incredible journey, working together to create this new album. Long time fans will recognise his trademark bellow from the EP 'One' he recorded with us back in the day, which was recorded in a very rough, DIY fashion. While 'One' certainly isn't without its charm, we can't wait for folk to hear what he can do when given a proper studio to work in."

While Simon adds, “This new album, “Mean Sugar” picks up where we left off in 2016, each track is a journey, it’s all got doom and stoner vibes, but it’s still heavy and full of stonking riffs, some bits are challenging and uneasy, but we kept in the groove.

My hope is that when people hear this album, they’ll hear the energy of five, working northern men, in a way they’ve never heard before. We wanted to write something that was earnest and sincere to all our diverse musical tastes, but also side-steps what our peers in doom, stoner and sludge acts are doing so well. We didn’t want any obvious comparison that could be made with other bands.”

Since the release of their debut album ‘Solitude And Savagery’ in 2018 the band have gone on to perform at the likes of Bloodstock Festival twice, Doomlines and Riffolution Festival, as well as playing alongside Green Lung, Crowbar, PIJN, Boss Keloid, and Raging Speedhorn.

Barbarian Hermit will host their album launch show at Manchester’s, Rebellion on 3rd August with support from Under, Bodach and Shred Dibnah.

Instrumental Sludge/Stoner Metallers WALL Announce New Album BRICK BY BRICK

WALL - An instrumental 2-piece heavy fucking riff machine, built brick by brick & riff by riff by twin brothers and Desert Storm members Ryan & Elliot Cole.

Released on 30th August via APF Records (Desert Storm, Video Nasties, Barbarian Hermit), their debut album ‘Brick by Brick’ is overflowing with unashamed Iommi-worshipping, instrumental, sludge/doom metal. With the band taking inspiration from the first 6 Black Sabbath albums as well as being influenced by the undisputed kings of instrumental stoner rock - the much missed Karma To Burn, drummer Elliot Cole comments on some of the other artists they were listening to at the time while writing the album,

“Torche, High on Fire, Elephant Tree, and The Sword were on heavy rotation a lot. I also was listening to a fair bit of Power Trip at the time too. But as well as the rock/metal stuff, we were listening to Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Radiohead which helped in a way with some of the more spacey & ambient sections on the album”

Like many recent projects WALL was born during lockdown with the two brothers living together in a small flat. With both of them furloughed, this left the duo with little else to do but write music to distract themselves from the boredom of being stuck at home.

Ryan wrote riffs on an unplugged Gibson SG, whilst Elliot tapped out the drum rhythms on his lap. The first time the twins heard how the songs would sound properly was when they were in the studio tracking their initial first two EPs, as they couldn't arrange a proper rehearsal due to restrictions.

While originally starting out as a side project, WALL began to evolve into a more serious proposition following shows at Bloodstock Open Air, Desertfest London, Masters of the Riff alongside shows with Discharge, Will Haven and European dates in Germany, Czech Rep & Slovakia.
Now following these shows and 2 Eps on APF Records, the next step for WALL is the release of their debut album 'Brick By Brick'. Recorded at Shonk studios / Warehouse Studios - Oxford, by Jimmy 'Evil' Hetherington & mastered by Tim Turan @ Turan Audio, ‘Brick By Brick’ is essential listening for any fan of slow, crushing riffs.

'Masking My Contempt’ is the 1st single to be shared from the album wth Elliot adding,

"We are really excited to release the debut album 'Brick by Brick' & 'Masking my contempt' is the first new piece of music in about 2 years (since the Wall vol.2 EP) The song 'Masking My Contempt' starts with a sample from an amusing scene, that is taken from a film we like called American Beauty. The scene is where Lester Burnham blackmails his boss for over a years salary. We have said for years that it would make a cool intro to a song, and to kick in with a big groovy riff after it. The title of the song is clearly taken from the sample, and the rest of the track was built around that first riff. 'Masking my Contempt' switches between a 6/8 and 4/4 time signature. There are only 3 riffs in the whole song, and some bluesy slide guitar overdubed...it's short and sweet and what we set out to achieve with this first single.”

Party doom riff merchants GURT return with new album 'Satan ETC' & share new single

It's been five long years since "party doom" riff merchants GURT released their last crushing opus "Bongs of Praise", now on June 7th 2024 they are set to return with their latest, crushing-ist opus yet, "Satan Etc".

A lot has happened in the band members lives since 2019, some suffered tragic losses, some welcomed new life into the world, some grew awesome skullets. Not to mention that global event in 2020 that kept us all inside.

Left to ferment in frustrating circumstances has led to the new material being more aggressive and abrasive than previous offerings, whilst still retaining that signature GURT silliness and swagger.

In January 2024 GURT took these new songs into the mighty Monolith Studios in London and under the watchful eye of Steve Sears, they birthed the magnificent, monstrous "Satan Etc". This album marks GURT's 5th collaboration with Sears, who always coaxes the best out of the band with a healthy mixture of positive support and scathing insults.

When asked about the influences and inspiration behind this album vocalist Gareth Kelly states "it's about survival in the very fucked up world we live in, but of course delivered in the bands tongue in cheek style".Drummer Bill Jacobs says " we wanted shorter punchier songs to go with the new aggro vibe, nothing to do with us being older and fatter" whilst bassist David "Spicy" Blakemore enigmatically adds "I've been listening to lots of Slavic hardcore!".

Delving into varied topics, from bodged vasectomies to the beauty of brown cars, from self pleasure on Arrakis to the wholesome matter of how damn much Gareth loves his kids, "Satan Etc" is the sound of the band ready to get back to doing what they love most: having a great big sludgy party with their rabid fans.  “This song is simply about the sheer incompetence of the geriatric surgeon that operated on me, and best of all it was a fucking vasectomy! Simply harrowing, so much so, I wrote him a love letter in this song!”

LEGENDARY UK METAL TITANS ORANGE GOBLIN ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM SCIENCE, NOT FICTION

Legendary UK metal giants Orange Goblin are back with details of their long awaited new studio album Science, Not Fiction. Set for release on 19th July, Science, Not Fiction will be the band’s first release on the iconic Peaceville label (Darkthrone, Autopsy, Candlemass).

Speaking on the track, frontman and lyricist Ben Ward says “It’s basically saying that life can be pretty simple and straightforward if you just stop wasting your time and make each day count. Science, Not Fiction was recorded at Woodworm Studios UK in late 2023, with production and mixing duties carried out by Grammy winning producer Mike Exeter (most notable for his work with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Tony Iommi) and mastering conducted by the esteemed Peter Hewitt-Dutton at The Bakery in LA.

From the explosive death-boogie of opener “The Fire At The Centre Of The Earth Is Mine” onwards, the band’s tenth album crackles with energy and belligerence. Following the departure of long serving bassist Martyn Millard in 2020, Orange Goblin welcomed close friend Harry Armstrong (formerly Hangnail) into the fray, making Science, Not Fiction his first studio outing with the band. With the new line-up fizzing with chemistry, the hard rocking likes of “(Not) Rocket Science”, “The Fury Of A Patient Man” and “The Justice Knife” breathe new life into some classic Orange Goblin tropes. Meanwhile, twisted prog-doom detours like “False Hope Diet” and “Cemetary Rats” take the Londoners into epic new territory, with everything from skull-shattering punk ‘n’ roll to transcendent space rock hurled into the swirling brew.

“It is a continuation of what we’ve been doing, and that’s because when we write, it’s a big mixing bowl of all of our influences and favourite artists, and we try and create the perfect band that we always wanted to hear,” Ben states. “This album, it’s just more accomplished and mature, I guess. None of us are spring chickens anymore and we’ve got ten albums under our belts now. I feel like we’re more professional in the recording studio, I feel like we’re better musicians and writers, and now with me looking after myself, I feel like my performance is better as well. It’s all moving in the right direction.”

Psych Stoner Rockers The Lunar Effect made a mighty impression with their 2019 debut album Calm Before The Calm. The record was a great mix of Psych Rock, Fuzz Rock, Stoner Rock and waves of Cosmic Rock which allowed the band to have a unique sense of heaviness of their own creation. Well, lightning has struck twice with their even more impressive second album Sounds Of Green & Blue which sees The Lunar Effect bring a sense of hedonistic style of 1970’s Hard Rock to the free-flowing 1960’s Psychedelic Rock world. 

The Lunar Effect explore the darker and doomedelic side of Freakish Psych Rock with waves of Fuzzed Up Stoner Rock and Frenzied Garage Rock all forming for quite an adventurous sound which you can feel the powerful impact on the opening tracks of Ocean Queen, Flowers For Teeth and Colour My World. These three tracks alone showcase the wide variety of different influences that the band use for this album, as you can hear influences such as The Doors, The Who, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zepp, Monkey3, Red Fang and Radio Moscow.

Though, don’t go thinking that The Lunar Effect doesn't bring their own creative energy to the party. As the whole album is full of highly original and slightly intense long drawn out instrumental jams which keeps the mood soulful, energetic and buoyantly heavy throughout.

There’s a sense of world-weary mysticism hidden within the band’s lyrics which gives an air of mystery to the band’s music especially with the EPIC vocals employed for the record. This is an album that has a classic rock energy whilst also becoming a thoroughly modern Stoner Rock record at the same time.

The album can be quite deceptive within its more quiet moments as you feel you’re witnessing a Post-Stoner groove before The Lunar Effect delivers an intense explosion of Blues Rock inspired Stoner Rock energy which is hidden throughout the majority of the tracks. The music can be quite seedy in places but the punishing blend of Cosmic Fuzz and Classic Stoner grooves allows The Lunar Effect to deliver some of the album's most standout moments which perhaps shine brightest within the second half of the record.

Other standout tracks include: In Grey,  Middle Of The End, Fear Before The Fall and  On The Story Goes.

Sounds Of Green & Blue is a pulsating record with first rate production values that allows this album to become an essential release within the UK Stoner Rock scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.

The Lunar Effect, sonic architects known for their gravitational pull of fuzzy, snarling riffs and psychedelic visions, proudly announce the release of their latest album, "Sounds of Green and Blue," available to pre-order now through Svart Records. “Sounds of Green and Blue” is a galactic journey through sound that showcases The Lunar Effect’s evolution and marks a pivotal chapter in their musical odyssey.

Formed in 2016, The Lunar Effect burst onto the scene with a distinct blend of grunge and retro hard rock. GOZER ANNOUNCE NEW EP - 'THE PATH ALWAYS LEADS TO THE END' - RELEASED 3RD NOVEMBER / WATCH THE VIDEO FOR ‘CELESTIAL RIVER'

Revelling in a blend of atmospheric textures & powerful sludge riffs. After venturing through the vast scope of heavy music and experimenting with their sound, Gozer's vision was realised with the album 'AN ENDLESS STATIC' released in 2022.

Receiving praise from the likes of Metal Hammer, Metal Injection, Invisible Oranges and more for the album's dense sonic power, song structures and emotive depth.

GOZER are now set to release their continuation in the EP 'THE PATH ALWAYS LEADS TO THE END' building off the themes of mental health found throughout their first release this EP's subject puts more focus on passing on and with it the unknown of what comes next.

"A Lot of us have our own notion of what comes after we pass, some people find comfort in the belief of some form of afterlife beyond what we could ever experience in this mortal coil, others may simply believe we return to the earth and the cycle of life continues. I’m still undecided about what happens once we breathe our last breath but I know that creating something with people means a great deal as all we truly leave once we are gone, are the people in our lives with who we shared our passions, successes, losses, joy and sadness but above all else our love.” - GOZER

The Path Always Leads To The End will be released on the 3rd of November. Recorded & mixed by Tj Fairfax and mastered by Magnus Lindberg.

'Celestial River’ is the first single to be shared from the EP with the band adding,

"Celestial River was one of the first tracks we wrote after finishing our album An Endless Static. Originally it was going to be instrumental, but Kez came with these great lyrics that summed up how life pushes you forward. There's always obsticals but if there's a way to embrace them we can hopefully be happier when we look back on our journey”.

Review:

Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation is the debut album from Sludge/Hardcore/Doom/Thrashers Silverburn otherwise known as the new project from Welsh Legend Jimbob Issac of TAINT and HARK fame. This album is quite a different beast compared to TAINT and HARK with Jimbob operating with a more Thrash/Hardcore aggressive sound. The album is very fast-paced with the onslaught of Thrash/Sludge Metal grooves. There's an epic sense of adventure from Silverburn despite the short thirty minute runtime of the album.

Jimbob does cover a lot of creative ground on this album with harsh vocals throughout and it's an almost different vocal style from Jimbob when he unleashes a more sinister presence to his vocal styles compared to his previous bands. The music is mostly Hardcore/Thrash based with Jimbob's trademark Sludge/Stoner/Doom quickfire grooves being there for everyone to hear. The music is more abrasive here and if TAINT were around to this day then I can see this being the type of band they would ultimately become. The songs are superbly constructed that allows Jimbob to play an wicked array of different gloomier riffs with bleak sounding Psychedelic textures.

The album contains a wealth of first rate lyrics and heavy Progressive sludgy jams especially on tracks such as Annihilation, Formless Atomization Of Omniscient Particulate and Vita Potentia Animus. Silverburn moves along at such a violent and breakneck speed you can easily be forgiven for wanting to take a rest with this album. However, Jimbob's ferocious and breathtaking performance throughout the album will keep you along for the ride. The music is more real when the grooves become heavier and progressive on tracks such as Vita Potentis Animus, Pain Body (Torn From Auric Field) and Sulacreality.

The later stages is where Jimbob lets fly with some epic CAVE-IN and MASTODON inspired Progressive Sludge Metal sounds whilst still offering his own refreshing style of music that remains highly original and absolutely essential in its own right. With a neverending arsenal of different grooves, Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation has allowed Jimbob to rediscover his musical creative zest that he showed with both TAINT and HARK for an album that makes him an essential part of the Sludge/Doom/Stoner Metal scene that he's served brilliantly over the last 30 years. 

Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation is an absolute RAGER in every sense of the word. Silverburn could be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come especially with the band now performing live gigs in the near future. They have the songs to pulverise anything that stands in their way and release an album that could become one of the most essential albums you need to listen to this year. This is a must have album and I'm glad to have Jimbob Isaac back making great albums such as this.
