Review

Lies To Service is the new album from Greek Hard Rock/Stoner Rock Band and it’s quite a move away in style and tone from their last couple albums. Their last two albums focused upon a Doom/Stoner hybrid sound with Grunge elements which made for an interesting and captivating sound. This album is more Grunge driven with Stoner based elements but Godsleep bring a focused Alternative Rock approach with subtle hints of Electronica appearing here and there.

The album is full of great songs that have a classic 90’s Stoner Rock/Grunge setting but Godsleep keep things interesting with their choice of different styles of Hard Rock and gloomy atmospherics which you can hear within the stunning opening tracks of Booster and Pots Of Hell. Taking stylish cues and influences from QOTSA, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and other gloriously hip mainstream bands but keeping things within the underground scene in certain aspects.

The vocals from Amie Makris range from Alternative Rock, Punk Rock, Stoner Rock, Doom Rock and even some screeching vocals which come into play on Pots Of Hell. Godsleep are a quite different band from the famed Greek Stoner Rock/Metal scene with the band creating their own powerful sound. There’s a sense of DOOM and GLOOM residing within the lyrics and how Amie delivers her superb vocals. The classic grunge vibe comes alive and more convincing on the later stages of the album. However, there’s more than enough variety to impress listeners especially on songs such as: Room 404, Saturday, Cracks and Better Days.

Though, truth be told, the majority of these tracks are all KILLER but Godsleep impress the most on the final three tracks of Egonation, Permanent Vacation and Last Song where the band become more progressive with the music and their creative thoughts that only endears you even further to the band.

The instrumental work is another highlight with Godsleep playing different styles of Grunge and Stoner Metal throughout the album. The mood is always continuously heavy with a highly energetic approach with grooves reminiscent of Jane’s Addiction, Alice In Chains and Royal Thunder.

Lies To Survive is a mighty bold and brilliant leap for Godsleep and perhaps forge an exciting new chapter for the band which could see them play on some of the biggest Stoner Metal festival stages across the globe.
