Review
TANKZILLA is the debut album from Sludge/Doom/Stoner Rockers TankZilla who are made up of former members from Peter Pan Speedrock and Wolfskop and they play a raucous style of Sludge/Stoner Rock with a wonderful THRASH sound. Parts QOTSA, Metallica, Thin Lizzy, Melvins and Motorhead can be used as main points of inspiration but there’s also that classic Peter Pan Speedrock energy heard throughout the album.
The album is quite anthemic with a Punk based energy on tracks such as Lucifer, Crossroad and Wrong Place. However, TankZilla shows traces of Swamp Rock, Blues Rock and Southern Rock which is filtered with a true CLASSIC RAW energy and the two-man combo of Peter van Elderen hooked op with former Wolfskop drummer Marcin Hurkman use to their full advantage. The music can be quite daring with the way how the music is delivered.
The vocals are a crossover style of James Hetfield and Phil Lynott based vocals which is a huge advantage to this album. As the mood is primarily built for METALHEADS to fully obsess over like I did. Throw in a SEEDY and GARAGE ROCK attitude with TankZilla playing a similar style of rebellious Stoner Rock that can be compared to Songs For The Deaf especially with the lyrics written for this album. However, this is still TankZIlla doing their own thing and they continue to impress further on tracks such as Down Below, Brother From Another Mother, Wolfpack, Diggin’ 4 Gold and Hard Way.
Even with the raw sounding edges and production values of the album, this record is highly melodic in a Street Doom and Garage Rock kind of way. TankZilla have wicked fun with their music and the fast-paced aggressive attitude is a delight to hear from start to finish. There’s nothing flashy or progressive about this album. TankZilla focuses on bringing the mighty RIFF to the Sludge/Stoner Rock masses and there’s a high amount of exciting grooves showcasing a wide range of different styles from this hugely talented two-man combo.
TANKZILLA is being released by Heavy Psych Sounds and the album sounds superb with first rate production techniques allowing this album to offer a super-fresh style of Aggressive, Catchy, Sublime and Hard Rock sounds you’ll find very hard to beat.
This is a first rate and brilliantly entertaining release that feels like an essential part of the Sludge/Stoner Rock Underground Scene.
Excellent and Highly Recommended.
