Review

Wizard Tattoo returns with their superb new EP One Of These Knives which is a cautionary style of Doom Metal, Stoner Rock and NWOBHM which matches the creative surroundings of their 2022 debut EP and acclaimed 2023 debut album Fables Of The Damned.

There’s a scorched Desert Rock philosophy appearing within the opening track Varsak Of Man which blends that classic Stoner Rock/Metal vibe with an almost Blackened Roll approach. The song does see the band surround themselves with movements of Thrash Metal and Prog Rock overlays whilst staying within the Doom Rock/Stoner Metal framework that he’s applied for all of his records he’s released to date. The vocals have a Doom Metal and Heavy Metal persona to them with Bram delivering harsh OCCULT based vocals though it’s the music that holds your undivided attention.

Second track sees Bram continue with his chameleon vision with a song that morphs into a Psychedelic Doom/Stoner Rock journey with lush 1970’s Prog Rock instrumental passages and a subtle Post-Stoner or Doomgaze appetite. The exquisite and earthly vocals of Djinnifer make a welcome appearance with an emotionally charged performance that moves the EP to a completely different style compared to the opening track.

Third track My Second Knife Fight is the sequel to the track Wizard Knife FIght (At A Bar) that appeared on their 2022 debut EP. The song plays it for laughs at times but the music is always impressive with an Outlaw Rock persona appearing within the vocals. The music could have easily be classed as parody but Wizard Tattoo keeps everything moving with an intense blast of Southern Rock, Boogie Rock and Country Rock vibes that become more interesting when the Psychedelic Doom aspects appear.

The final track Edge Of Reprisal is more of a solemn Post-Doom number with an eerie Apocalyptic sound which matches the cinematic style of music that Bram has used extensively in the past. It’s a gloomy and lush sounding number which adds a layer of Doom and Gloom weariness that left me wanting to hear more.

One Of These Knives is the second EP from Wizard Tattoo this year and showcases once again why they’re a band on the right creative path on becoming more well known within the underground scene.

Excellent and Highly Recommended.
