Review

Fleshy Waves of Probability is the new album from Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metallers Calyces who bring a different flair from the Greek underground scene. With influences ranging from Mastodon, GOJIRA, Baroness, Between The Buried And Me and Boss Keloid, this is quite a mind-expanding and forward thinking album. However, Calyces fuse intricate melodies and fast-paced Thrash beat-downs with lush sounding Psychedelic grooves against a backdrop of chaotic time signatures and complex progressive beats.

The record does have a commercial Hard Rock/Metal aspect which has served Mastodon and Baroness well recently but Calyces never fully moves over to “THE DARK SIDE” with an album that delights and entertains with it’s fresh paced and vivid style of music played throughout. The opening track of Swirling Towards The Light has a fresh perspective with the melodic and highly charged Sludge Metal sounds being played at a heavier demented “DOOM-POP” level. There’s a sense of BOSS KELOID influenced wordplay appearing within the lyrics and the vocals at times with Calyces marching to their own creative beats.

Calyces just blast their way through a ton of experimental instrumental passages on tracks such as Boneshatter, Wastelands and Lost In Phrase which feels like the world of Prog Metal being re-imagined in the band’s DOOM infused SONIC imagery. The grooves are eclectic once again with Calyces not sticking to any genre of music and creating their own great style as they go along.

You’ll discover new sounds and hear passages you’ve heard before but that’s the best of both worlds which Fleshy Waves Of Probability will thrust you into. There’s a subtle Post-Rock/Post-Metal charge appearing within the record on the quieter moments which soon give way to the wicked sounding stop/start riffs which gives Calyces a pure experimental sound throughout the whole album.

The second half of Fleshy Waves Of Probability is just as relentless as the first half with Calyces perhaps more comfortable and evidently grounded by their bombastic sound offering the heaviest sounds on the whole record on tracks such as Voices In The Gray, Forked Tongue and Lethargy.

With excellent and emotionally charged production values felt from the very start of the album, Calyces have delivered the goods with the album which should allow them to gain more noticeable attention within the underground Sludge/Stoner Metal scene and perhaps even further if luck is on their side.

Fleshy Waves Of Probability is an absolute marvel with highly original moments that shines a new light within the Progressive Sludge/Stoner Metal scene.
